April 1 I came out of surgery with 5 drains. Since then I have had 3 more surgeries each requiring drains. I have found myself very frustrated with drain management.

Therefore, my Mom (a BC survivor herself) and I came up with a new product.

Wow ~ 5 drains!!!!!!!!!! I thought my one was a pain. Might you make a short version of this as a shirt? I found myself doing interesting things with my drains when I went outside, like wearing a long shirt and attaching the tubes to my belt loops. I only had the drain for three weeks, an eternity it seemed! The drain usually went into a pocket on my loose pants but I had trouble if the waistband was a tad too tight. Sometimes I pinned it on the outside. But a Wallaby shirt would be just the cat's meow for the most likely inevitable second mast. Colors? Obviously white or blue to start.

    Andrea,

Since my stage 4dx I have been frustrated by the lack of info for the more practical  day to day getting thru this nonsense.  As a result I have started a project where I am collecting tips, tricks and all sorts of info that might be helpful to others just starting out.  I want to eventually share this info w/cancer centers, forums, social workers etc sot it gets to patients.  May I include info about the Wallaby?

Elaine, I like your idea of collecting tips and hints! Would you also pass this along to the plastic surgeons, as some of us didn't have to go to a cancer center. I gathered all the tips I could before my surgery, and that really helped a lot! Some of my drains stayed in for 5 wks, and that was an eternity.

Andrea, Great idea about the "wallaby". Would you also be able to make one with the pockets on the inside? I found that I would wear "dusters" inside out, so that I could pin my drains into the pockets and they wouldn't show on the outside. I also made pockets inside of large shirts so I could pin my drains there when I went out. I wish you much success!!!

Okay ladies, holidays are over and things have sort of settled down....

If you have ideas, resources, tips what ever- I would love to collect them.  You can send by email, pm or traditional mail.  Send me pm and I will give you info.  Thanks for all your help, I think we all have so much knowledge, wisdom, experience that we can share, maybe make some one elses life a little less over whelming and scarey.

Someone on here posted wearing a duster (short small robe with pockets) inside out and putting the drains in the pockets.  I loved that idea.  Although I have gotten really good and handling drains and pinning them to clothes.

Hi, I was the one that bought the dusters with zippers, and wore them inside out so I could put the drains in the pockets. It was essential for me, cause I had my last 2 drains in for FIVE weeks! Some ladies used a "fanny pack", but I didn't know where mine disappeared to (had never used it!). I also put a large shoestring around my neck that I could pin the drains to when taking a shower. I also put soap and shampoo in a mesh bag that I tied on the shower bar so I could have it within reach. Seems like the drains were the worst part! Also, it is good to have a pillow handy for the ride home from the hospital, to pad yourself from the seat belts over the chest area. I know there were tons of other hints that came in handy, but can't think of them now....its amazing how much you can forget after a few months! Good luck with putting all the ideas together!!!
