So we aren't talking about thongs for middle aged ladies any more...OMG, you gals are gonna kill me!!! What a sick imagination came up with this!...but you've gotta admit it's funny...XXXXXXXXXcensoredXXXXXXXXXXNow have a good laugh before I delete it!!! (or you report me to the moderators)PS I'm on my third glass of wine for the evening.
-
Linora, it's hilarious! I got an email this week that had a real photo of a lady on a beach just like that. Art imitates life...
-
Oooh, Linora, sorry I missed that, but I can guess what it looked like!!
-
Dang!! Sorry I was asleep in front of What Not to Wear~~a compilation show, not new.
What's ILL? I need to see all the books y'all have mentioned...even better, I need to write one for the kick-ass "New Forty"!!!
I attended a fab fashion show/luncheon today for Heart Assn. The models, ranging from 0 to mature, wore bare legs, invisible hose that gave a beautiful finish to the leg, black, whatever complemented the model. I wore textured black hose (I do have nude and black fine fishnets) with peep-toe black leather ankle-straps, new black wool crepe boot-cut pants, black merino wool turtleneck with ruffled edges, and a red wool belted jacket~~~and my red& diamond heart earrings, a double-heart gold pin, a St. John bracelet with heart, and red cashmere gloves~~~all favors from previous years!!
This year the favor was the Heart Assn. cookbook~~~looks great. I can read it on the treadmill.
My avatar is the invitation to my "Daffodils & Diamonds" cancer luncheon, our 28th year!
I get Traditional Home, Southern Accents, and Charleston Home. The others are either too New York or too contemporary for me~~~~though I love to look at them all!! Have y'all ever noticed that the doctors with the good mags always take you on time? (yes, I like MORE, too~~~haven't seen it around. That's probably way more useful than Bazaar!)
-
Oh, Daff, I love home mags!! You're a woman after my own heart. I may be a Yankee by birth, but I grew up in one of the 13 colonies in one of the oldest towns in Masschusetts & I know I would just love Charleston Home. I enjoyed visiting that charming city some years back. Loved Virginia, too.
Your outfit sounds stunning. So, is it that fifty is the "New Forty"? I'd agree with that, except that we start losing all this estrogren after 50 (not to mention hormonal treatment for BC), and I'd kill to have the skin I had ten years ago in my forties.
-
No, darlin', SIXTY is the new 40!!! And I am fighting tooth and nail to keep my skin good...of course, taking HRT for 15 years prolly gave me cancer.
Too bad we didn't really appreciate what we had~~~when we had it.
My DD, now in VA Beach, is moving to Boston, so we will be flying to Providence!! DS is in Charleston, building gorgeous houses. Downtown is simply another world.......
-
Tina...just saw this
"Okay, she says not to cut the hems off jeans if they need shortening but to cut off "the original hem, shorten, then invisibly re-attach the original hem."
I don't know what she's talking about!! I get the idea of what she is trying to do, but is sounds pretty kludgy to me. My best suggestion for hemming jeans is to cut the hem off, and rehem them using a regular machine stitch the same way they were originally hemmed, which usually means a double fold sewn twice. Use the same color thread too.
-
I know this is off topic but...wanted to share info about an effort to send email/letters bringing attention to bc research/cure:
In the "Commemorating Loved Ones" Forum, there is a thread with the title "In Honor of Alaska Deb-an idea"....Our email campaign is in full swing.....We are emailing Obama, Daschle and Palin on Feb 14th.....Please check it out and spread the word.
-
Linora, I am just checking in and see that I missed your naughty link.
Raye, didn't Charla or whatever her name is say never, never, never wear nude hose as it is the most OL thing there is? So, now I have to spray my legs? God help me, another new skill to develop. LOL
Well, at least I can report that I'm already in almost perfect compliance with most of her rules. Most.
I think the glasses she shows as Y&H are mostly pretty gross. Talk about Elton John. I also think it's one thing to wear showy glasses with heavy plastic frames if your eyes are nothing special but if they are one of your best features (ahem) why hide them?
Did you check out the pictures of her models on the last page of the book? Over forty moms, friends of a friend from Greenwich. Gee, I thought they looked pretty bad and their jeans looked pretty unflattering, even if not strictly mommy, to me.
Daffodil, ILL stand for Inter Library Loan. I run with a pack of librarians............
One of my dream trips is go investigate Charleston in the early spring. Anyone want to plan a road trip?
Speaking of trips, is Beth going to the Islands soon?
Providence is wonderful! Make sure you visit it when you visit Boston.
-
Tina and all you FASHION AFICIONADOS - you will appreciate my Artfull Bras thread here in Moving Beyond... really creative!
-
Hi, Laura. Nice to see you! I'll check out your bra thread.
I forgot to give a magazine report. Glamour is truly way too young for me. Most of this issue was about men. Like I don't already have enough of them. I already know how to turn on my man: just breathe. LOL I want Fashion and Beauty from a magazine named "Glamour."
Allure was okay. So far I really like InStyle much better.

-
Oh, Linora!! LMAO!!
-
Oh My
-
OK--guess my age is showing, but bare legs??? Not only is it too cold for that MOST places in winter, but I don't think it LOOKS as flattering as silk or good hose-----I remember watching the Today show when Katie Couric first embraced that fad...Jimmy Choo with no hose? ...doesn't do it for me!
LOL Linora!
-
Oh Linora, my eyes, my eyes!
Saint, I am with you.
Anna Wintour of Vogue started all this. The Holllywood celebs pounced on it...another way to wear no clothes. However, their legs are waxed, exfoliated, and spray- tanned to perfection. The New York Socials had to go along, and there they are, photographed with their stick-thin, white or mottled, shivering hose-less legs. Many could benefit greatly from control tops, as most of the country between the 2 coasts wear more than size 0-4.
No wonder the fashionistas embraced the return of black tights!!
-
I know that shoes tend to be easier to keep on without hose, but my feet sweat without them.
Also, getting to the varicose vein stage and at least hose camoflages it a bit.
Besides, up here in the cold, I think it's just slutty to have bear legs.
-
I love this idea: Artful Bras:
-
So, some Vogue chick started all that about the hose. It figures. Probably had a fight with a colleague in the hose industry and decided to "fix him." And we women are stupid enough to march to that tune. Gimmeabreak. I still am not sold on the fishnets, though, Daffodil's obvious fashion sense notwithstanding. When did they leave the strumpet line? I remember my one and only pair of fishnets. I was about 16 and they were pink...............
barbe, I agree that shoes without stockings feel horrible on the feet and make that ucky sucking sound when you take them off due to the sweating. And in the cold, nah. I'm not as far north as you are but it still hasn't gone above 25 degrees here almost since early December.
There has to be a better way. Or maybe looking old really means looking sensible.
Now, ladies, I am in the market for a laptop bag. Actually, I am only going to be trucking my old laptop between my office and the house, about 150 feet away. I suppose I could get by with an old tote bag but I want something cuter and more padded in case I drop it. I looked on the staples website and they have some cute ones in colors and prints but the prices are pretty high. Any suggestions?
-
Excuse my typing/typos- my hand is all wrapped and splinted after falling on the ice the other day.
T- all lap top bags range from $79-$150 if you want something cute that still offers protection to the computer. It's going to be the only bag you have for the life of the laptop so its worth the money.
I opted out of the cutsie bag this time around (although my laptop itself is pink) and went for the swiss wenger bags that have a million compartments for cell phone money disks, etc...
-
Beth, are you ok?
Tina, you are right. Charla does have the nude hose listed as something you "must throw out." Considered very OL. She is a proponent of the nude fishnets, however. hmmm. She does make some good points, although a lot of what she says, I cannot agree with. To be Y&H (young and hip) a woman must highlight her hair?
I am a fan of bare legs in the summer. And yes, Barbe! The shoes stay on much better without hose. In the winter it is way too cold for this, although I do wear skirts with high boots and short socks without tights.
Have a great Sunday everyone.
-
So just what colour am I supposed to wear with my brown skirt or my charcoal one?
-
Just finished cleaning out the rabbit trays/barn (first decent enough day to do it in ages) and came back in to check you guys.
Beth, what happened? Did you break something? Damn ice. It's everywhere, just like Chickenman.
I will check out the bag brand you mention. Thanks for the heads-up.
Raye, I agree with no hose in hot weather. That's why I hate to wear closed-in shoes in the summer. My feet get too hot and sweaty in them. Last year I lived in my Havaianas. My feet want to be Freeeeeeeeeeee.
barbe, I think that you are "allowed" to wear any conservative color of opaque hose/tights. Brown, wine, dark green, charcoal. No crazy stuff, although I do think that is a bit "age-ist." True, we might look silly in polka dot tights (most of us) but gee, haven't we earned the right to look however we want? LOL
Another question I had about the book (and what I've been reading in fashion mags) is that sheer colored hose are not favored, just opaque. Huh?
Why don't the rest of you girls read that book and we can have a proper book discussion?
Just like my regular book group, only just us and just fashion/beauty.
-
I tried to get that book through library (I was brought up supporting---and--using the public library!); I will try again.
Summer is another agenda altogether. I do have toeless pantyhose to wear with open toes when I need either the control top or the slight coverage. I use the self-tanners on my legs, even though it brings out the sun damage. (I am very fair)
The fishnets I am referring to are a very fine weave, not dancer's tights. Of course those tights make dancers' legs look divine.
HIghlights add naturalness to dull or one-process hair color. I think the new home color kits are very good, especially if you use the higher-priced ones. My DIL is a much-sought-after hair artist (that's what they called the team who did the styles for the Heart show!) and she says my L'Oreal base color is excellent!
Off for a little pre- Super Bowl shopping, coupon in hand!!!!
-
Go Steelers
-
YAY, Steelers! We were watching with friends who really don't watch football~~~and we all had a ball! Great game, great half-time, and some fun ads!!! (Oh, those Clydesdales!)
-
What a game! Everyone went to party last nite, I watch on my own and had a GREAT time. Don't think I've yelled and whooped it up so much for.....I don't know how long. Awesome
-
Okay- back to clothes-
I love the idea of dresses for everyday wear but I am having trouble finding dresses that are not too dressy. I'm not working so I don't need business attire. Any suggestions?
Elaine
-
Elaine, where would you be wearing the dresses? Out with the girls for lunch, shopping, etc.? Give us some clues.
-
I'm with Elaine! I LOVE dresses, then you only have to buy one piece...and it matches. I think it is a fashion scam that now you have to buy a top and bottom and perhaps even a jacket. I used to have only dresses....sigh. I've mentioned this for a number of years to my husband and he agrees. He used to take me out and I'd give him a fashion show and we'd buy 3 or 4 at a time. Now I only find cocktail dresses or wrap around dresses made of polyester which is too hot for me.
I used to have beautiful flowing cotton ones that were the coolest thing I could wear in the summer. I LIVED in those dresses. I could dress them up with jewelry and/or a jacket and it was a whole new look.
Let me know if you find out where dresses live now - I'd like to visit.
