Artfull Bras Project
These are amazing! For those of you against the exploitation of bc "stuff"... look past that and enjoy the incredible level of creativity women posess - even in very difficult and trying times. Check these out:
http://www.quiltersofsc.org/artfullbras/artfullbras.htm
Members of Quilters of South Carolina have created one-of-a-kind bras for Breast Cancer Awareness. The exhibit consists of forty-nine original works of art which are unique, entertaining, humorous, and beautiful to make the public aware of breast cancer, to memorialize those lost to the disease and to honor survivors.
Edited to add:
I contacted them and asked if I can create, make and donate a couple. I'd love to create a race car one and a forest one...with leaves and acorns and pinecones.

Those are darling.
I don't consider that expolitation of bc stuff because they were made by craftswomen and aren't corporate-branded product. They're art!
-
Quilters are a very imaginative bunch. Neat bras.
-
That's the kind of thing I would have had a workshop for at my quilt store, Sewin' Love, years ago! I have won all the way from Best of Show to Viewer's Choice.
I have a whole sewing room in this house, but one of the cats has been crapping in it and we have to replace the rug once they all die off, so I have the room closed off right now. I miss my creativity outlet....sigh.
This is the third place they've been using. The dining room carpet has been replaced with laminate as the oldest cat, now gone, couldn't make it downstairs to the litter box and used the diningroom rug, even though we put a litter box in there for her! Apparently, it's the underpad which I now know contains urea and that makes the cats (dogs) want to pee on it. Go figure!
-
Those bras are awesome! What a fun idea and then to auction them off to help women with bc in need - inspirational.
-
BRA-vo to those talented women!! What fun!
Susan
-
BRA-vo - Susan - I LOVE IT! Too clever!
Girls...I rcvd an e-mail back from the woman who heads up this program. She said they'd be happy to have a race car version and a forest version...especially made and designed by a survivor! I'm so excited... I have to get started on this - but maybe not today....I'm sick with the "flu".
I hope more girls visit this thread...it's just nice to see this level of creativity!
-
Laura, that is too funny! I'd love to do one "Drama Queen". I think I will contact them too!
-
What gorgeous creativity.
-
I think I'm going to contact them too - have a couple of ideas!
-
What wonderfully creative bras. Two cans. Too funny.
Thanks for posting, Laura. Hope you feel better soon!
-
You girls are awesome! Marsha - hope you're feeling good!
Thanks Raye...
And girls... I would love to know what your ideas are. PM me if you don't mind... my lips are sealed!
-
Is there any way we could do our own? Their show is already up and running...
-
I actually thought about this! OMG - I think it would work... I love Susan's title BRA-VO... think about this... it could be awesome.
-
I LOVE the BRA-vo. Or BRA-VOGUE. I think with our warped sense of humour the average Joe (or Joanne) viewing "our" show might be stunned at what we come up with. The ladies who have their pics on-line did an amazing job. I found them all both touching and humourous.
-
OH< I agree! If we could figure a way to do this as a fund raiser some how???? All of us from BCO. how could we get them auctioned off with us all over the place??
-
Is anyone an Ebay afficianado? I know nothing about it but just a suggestion ~~ I'd be happy to participate some how!!!
-
Awww, girls, that would be too cool! I've bought and sold on ebay, and I'm no expert, but it is easy to do.
-
I agree that eBay is easy, but I think we need a larger market, like CNN!!!! Anyone know anyone who knows anyone? If you know what I mean...
-
I saw those last fall and sent them to all the women I know! Amazing creativity. My daughter is a quilter and art historian and was thrilled with them, too.
-
Is there any way we could do it from here with the money going to BCO? One person at a time puts their bra up for auction within the community. Bids go directly to that person's PM. She could go to the thread as it is bid on litsting the current high bid and have an end time???? The person who won makes a donation to BCO in the bid amount they won with?? The person who made the bra would just have to pay the postage to send it(?????????????) The thread would be THis weeks BRA-VO, donated by _______. Please send you bids to her PM??
I'm just throwing out ideas.................
-
Marsha, that just holds it within this community. I feel we could reach so many others to advocate the site. Also, if I'm making one, would I necessarily buy one from someone else? I do think BCO deserves the money too! That would make me feel good.
-
Just a suggestion: If a person makes one, sells it, SHE can then donate a portion to BCO and take the tax deduction... It could be like 10% goes to BCO or 50%, or whatever. This could drive the price UP with people knowing it is not a total for profit effort.
I am thinking one with pink ribbons in various shades of pink - for those who are not opposed to the pink ribbon theme. Since I live in an apartment with an 8 foot concrete slab (patio), I have decorated it with pots of plants and a trellis with a red/white/blue (patriotic) wind sock. My sister has made windsocks of different college and pro sports team colors. I have yet to see a BC windsock. For those with a more creative talent, I would buy a windsock or two.
-
Anyone going to PINKSTOCK in August? I threw out the idea of making our own and it sounds like fun. I am going to work on making a couple and putting flowers in on my patio railing and trellis...
-
I am meeting my Rocktober chemo girls in Seattle in August. These can be made without including quilted pieces, if we were to do them on our own... for those who don't quilt. But I think if any are to be made and donated to the org that is currently doing them, they would HAVE to have a quilted item on each one, because it's a quilting group. I'm not sure how it work if we combined efforts - and started one of our own.
Any quilters out there who would be willing to quilt two fall leaves for me? I have a layout of exactly what I am envisioning...but I don't quilt. If you quilted them, I would construct the bra and donate it as a team?
-
I did not realize this was only a quilting project. The idea of "decorated bras" caught my eye. Can I call it "recycling"?
-
Laura - sent you a PM - might have some leaves you can use.
Yea - I'd prefer it wasn't quilting only. I think recycled theme is a great idea!
Amy

I don't think they have to be quilted as their project is already up and running. If we did our own, well then, anything goes! If we get media attention this could be nationwide!
A craft store with scrapbooking supplies would have amazing doo dads to attach. Just a warning, glue gun glue isn't the best for permanent attachment to fabric, I know. A quick stitch would hold anything in place.
Now I'm REALLY excited!
-
I went back and looked at them again...you're right...some are not quilted - just embelished.
There's a fabric glue called Fabri-tac - I've gotten it at Michaels and Joanne fabrics. It's a permanent adhesive for fabric. You can even use it to hem pants! lol If you're not a "sewer".
-
Or fabric glue - for those that are sew-phobic!!! LOL!
-
Ooops! We think alike - check your PM Laura
