I just read something online, that if you've had a lumpectomy + radiation for breast cancer you DO NOT have the option for a mastectomy.  Is that true?  Also I was just wondering if anyone's had experience with scar tissue and how to distinguish a new lump from scar tissue?

taraleec---mastectomy is always an option.  I think what you are referring to is the difficulty with breast reconstruction  after radiation.  It is difficult (but certainly not impossible) as the skin is no longer as pliable after radiation. I'm not really sure how they differentiate between scar tissue and a new lump.

Taraleec -I would concur w/ Anne. Prior lumpectomy and/or radiation do not preclude a bmx. I wonder if you are referring to the fact that lumpectomies and biopsies sometimes make it difficult to interpert findings in a mammogram. I know my radiologist warned me about that. Best wishes. - Jean

I am so nervous, I'm having an MRI next week.  What if the MRI doesn't show anything either?  What do I do then?  Any experiences, thoughts, advice would be appreciated.

Taralee - I don't know for sure, but I think the chance of a MRI missing a siginficant bc is rare. I would think that nothing on the MRI would be good news. Please keep us posted. What day do you go in? Thinking of you! - Jean

Hi again Jean/Mykidsmom- I know, nothing on MRI would be good news.  But I know there's something in there that wasn't there before,(and my GYN can feel it too),but being that my current surgeon won't do another biopsy I don't know what steps to take if MRI is clear. There's definitely a new lump.    Tara
