IDC & DCIS
I have been seeing discussions about the grades of IDC & DCIS, can you be IDC only, I think if you are IDC you would automatically be DCIS, is that not correct?

They never mentioned DCIS at all to me....the only words I ever heard were IDC. I think once the DCIS has broken through the ductal walls it is ruled to be IDC. or at least this is my understanding of it.
-
jpann, I think you are right - DCIS leads to IDC. Though I have seen reports where they find both DCIS as well as IDC in the tissue sample. However, the most advanced diagnosis "wins", so if you have both DCIS and IDC, you are categorized as having IDC.

My diagnosis listed both IDC and DCIS. But of course IDC was oncology teams primary concern.
-
Mine did, too, mom_of_2. I had 3 cm of IDC and another 1 1/2 cm of DCIS.
-
me too! I had 2 tumors in the same breast... Far apart and distinct from each other. IDC 1.4 cm and DCIS 7mm.
When talking to the onc, he only cares about the IDC. However, I got a mastectomy (rather than a lumpectomy of the IDC) because of the presence of the DCIS.

So if Im understanding this correctly....Since my path reports and such do not state DCIS, I probably didnt have any correct?
I will try to remember to pose this question to my onco in May, but if any of you find out first please let me know.
Thanks

yes, Julie, i think if you had DCIS it would've been listed. mine was, as a separate diagnosis.
-
Im thinking you can have IDC without DCIS. There are alot of women who have IDC without DCIS.
DCIS can change to IDC if it 'jumps out of the Duct'
But IDC can start on its own outside of the Ducts.
And I agree with Emily. if one were to have DCIS it would be on your path report...Even if IDC trumps the DCIS. They would not leave it off the report.

My tumor had both - it was desribed to me as IDC surrounded by DCIS. The most interesting aspect to me is that the DCIS was grade 3 but the IDC was grade 2. Both were on my path reports. My surgeon got clear margins on the IDC but 1mm clear on the DCIS so I have a reexcision after chemo.

mine was both too, my path report said 65% IDC - grade 2 and 35% DCIS grade 1, my report from my biopsy said it was all DCIS, but I guess they don't really know until they are in there, I wondered if it was all DCIS until they busted it open with the biopsy needle, my mind goes all over the place!

Good Evening all,
I was dx with IDC 6mm, had surgical bx with wide excision, on my F/U fisit with bs the margins were too close for comfort sooooo, went for a re-excision. She said I have 2 types of cancer. DCIS was 7mm close to the IDC. DCIS was staged at 1b. All clear now.
-
DCIS may become IDC. DCIS is always stage 0, so i don't get why it is staged at 1b? DCIS is not invasive and it is curable by surgery alone.
-
"DCIS is curable by surgery alone"...just wanted to clarify that is this true if the surgery is mastectomy. The standard of care for DCIS w/ lumpectomy is surgery + radiation.
-
I read once a study that the prognosis for people having both IDC and DCIS seem to be better than those with pure IDC. Did any one hear about before?
That study was done in Brazil last year.
