Can You Get Disability For Depression and Anxiety?
Hi There,
I was wondering whether anyone can be eligible or get Disabilty for Depression and Anxiety? I am curious to this, as, I do suffer this. I do take Medication, but, sometimes it is hard. It comes and goes alot. If you know of anything, just post it here. I think it will also help others like on my "Please Help us" Thread to know this.
Thank You,
God Bless,

Hi, Kaloni. I am on disability due to permanent nerve damage from my lymph node dissection. What I learned is that you are given disability not due to a particular diagnosis, but what you can or cannot do on a daily basis. Hopefully someone else will come along with more info. I had to fill out paperwork, as did my doctor, on what a typical day was like and soforth...

I would guess it would be difficult and probably would need to be initiated by a psychiatrist. What does your doctor say when you ask? The Doctor would be more likely to have experience in pursuing this thought. I do believe you can be successful but it may take an incredible long time.

i don't know the answer to that, but when i went for disability (for lupus long before bc came along), ss sent me to a regular doc for exam and also a psychiatrist. in the interview they asked if i ever got depressed. i said yes so hence the psych exam. i have no idea what he said in his report. i requested copies of 2 doc reports from ss (you're entitled to that) but i never got them. and since i was approved along with 18months retro, i never pushed it. was curious though. good luck. i might add that you really need your docs behind you on applying for benefits. good luck

I think you can but its alot harder. I applied this summer and just got my determination DENIED!!!! When I wrote in my application that I had BC, Neuropthy, Anxiety& Depression. They promptly sent me to a phychiatrist. I guess he felt I was okay. I have worked years through Anxiety and Depression and that was not the main issue they just jumped on it. They said I was done with TX NOT!! I am on Herceptin for another 6 months at least if my heart function stays stable, And I am now thinking after reading other girls with the same SE that herceptin is keeping me in a state of bone pain and neuropthy. They also feel that I show no recurrence at this time Hello have not had my scans done yet. Its just ridiculas, I have worked since I was 10 for my family and I am one of the hardest workeres and truly enjoyed my job that I had to give up due to the fact I can't be on my feet for long or sit for long etc. I am appealing this and at the time of filling out the pperwork and the interview I neglected to put down I have ulnar nerve entrapment a tendon that needs to be released and carpal tunnel which was to be done when I found out I had BC. I worked through the whole summer with pain so I don't feel like I am a wimp. I hd 2 surgeries down on the other arm. You need to put everything down. Even if its not revelent to your case. I thought having stageIII cancer and still going through TX and never mind I have yet to complete reconstruction due to problems and neuropthy to boot would be enough. I only put the other stuff like depression doen and my thyroid down cause it was part of the medecine I was taking. I could see them asking for a second opinion on the neuropthy but geeze louise I was stunned that there focus was mainly on that. I do know they will give it to you for it but it has not been the issue for me. I wish you luck and hope that you can find the answer. My suggestion go to a social worker who deals with this and the paperwork. Ask your Onc for someone. Its worth it I did this time around and we will see. I am in hopes I will be back to work soon. I was only looking for short term. Its crazy!!!
Good-luck-Bridget

A collegue's brother-in-law did get on disability (workman's comp) for psych issues for (something like) 10 years. He was a nurse, or a nurse-in-training. I heard that after that, he went into training for something else. I think it was trauma of some sort.
Definition of Disability
