I was just diagnosed with IDC breast cancer.  My pathology report said it was Grade 1,  size of tumor was 0.8 cm.  Estrogen receptors were present in 95% of tumor cells and progesterone receptors were present in 95% of tumor cells.  KI-67 were positive in 10% of tumor cells. HER/NEU was -negative.  Can someone please explain these things.  I am scheduled for a Mastectomy on 2/18/2009.

    Andy,

Wow you're almost the same as me.  You have a hormone receptive cancer.  It is fueled by estrogen and progesterone.  Depending on your menopausal status you will either be given Tamoxifen or an Aromatase Inhibitor.  My situation did not merit chemo as my tumor was 8mm (.8cm)  Will you have the oncotypDx test done?  It will give you a recurrance estimate based on your tumor's makeup.  Your KI-67 shows that the tumor's growth rate is low.  Hope all goes well.   If you have specific questions, please do not hesitate to contact your doctor, nurse or patient advocate.  They are there to help you before, during and after your treatment.

    Gentle Hugs,

    Trish

Hi Andy17 - I had a very similar score as you as well.  I opted for a lumpectomy, which I had 1/5.  After surgery they will do another pathology report because they will have a larger sample size.  Mine was the same except my grade changed from a 1 to a 2 - which meant it was growing a little faster.

You may want to get a book to help you understand some of these terms a little better and to read up on things a bit.  I sure like to know that stuff, but it is almost like a crash medical course figuring all this stuff out.

cheers, there are many folks here to help translate.  Lori

Thanks for the replies.  It helps to talk to someone in the same boat as me.  This is just a very scary thing to be going through.  Especailly if you know nothing about it.

Hi Andy, I would say most of us knew nothing about breast cancer before we were diagnosed.  It has been a crash course for me and most of the others.

Keep reading, you will understand things more, which sometimes at least for me makes it a little less scary.
