My mother is newly diagnosed December 30th.   Talk about information overload at this point.   This was her 3rd lumpectomy and she is 52 years old in the middle of menopause.     Her first Dr. recommended that she get a mastecomy followed by chemo.  She got a second opinion and they are telling her that she could either have another lumpectomy followed by chemo or have a mastecomy.  I am really worried about her and want to her make an informed decision.  They are telling her the decision is up to her but there is so much information out there it has been really hard.  She is leaving early in the morning to get a PET scan and preparing for them to schedule her the next day for surgery.   She doesn't know what to do and of course everyone has their opinion but no one has been through this before.    I really appreciate any info that anyone has to help her through this.

Thanks

I'm 53 years old. If I was your mom I think I would give up the breast. It can't be trusted anymore.

Hi..I am also 53 and mine was the same.. grade3(meaning the most aggressive) IDC  and triple negative. I had a lumpectomy and my lymphnodes were cancer clean.. I am currently going through chemo.. radiation yet to come. I have already told my hubby that if this cancer comes back again.. I will have a double mastecomy.. I am not going to play around with this. As I am triple negative...there is a high risk that it will come back again because it's genetic.. not hormone induced, therefore hormone therapy is not an option.

If this is her 3rd time getting cancer..I personally wouldn't go with the lumpectomy but only your mother can make that decision. I wish her well with whatever avenue she decides to go with! Please keep us informed as to what she decides to do!

Prayers and positive thoughts coming your way Hugs

Belinda, I really appreciate your time in dropping me a reply.  If you don't mind could you tell me how chemo is going for you?   I know that chemo is a major worry for her.

Well the Dr. told her that another lumpectomy is best she is currently in surgery now, however when her PET scan came back it showed a mass on her liver, they did a biopsy on that and it came back positive :(  Her emotions are totally shot right now, looks like 6 months chemo at this point.  They still haven't did the lymph node biopsy.  I'm a little lost right now with all this.  Anyone go through anything similiar and can help shed a little light on this?

The liver will be the focal point for now. Once it has metastasized to distant organs outside the breast area, they place more emphasis on containing those hot spots. I don't think anyone dies from cancer limited to just the breast...it's only when it has metastasized to vital organs such as the liver, lungs or brain that her life is endangered. So that will take priority over lymph nodes or breast in most of her post-lumpectomy treatment.
