Report a Comment Feature

We've had some requests for more information about the 'report a comment' feature.  This feature was developed to help eliminate both spam and inappropriate posts on the discussion boards.  All posts are reviewed by a breastcancer.org administrator prior to being deleted from the site.  Any member banned as a result of inappropriate posts will be notified. If this feature is misused by members they will themselves be more likely to get banned, and be less able to report legitimate spam.

Please let us know if you have any questions about this feature.

Should the Report a Comment feature be used in a situation where there is a new member whose only objective appears to be promotion of her own websites?  There is someone who joined the board two days ago, has 10 posts so far and each post is directing readers to one of a couple of websites.

    Beesie,

In response to your question, the answer is yes.  The posts you are referring to sound like spam.

If you are ever unsure if it is appropriate to report a post,  please contact Melissa or myself and include a link to the posts in question, and we will look into the situation.

"include a link to the posts in question"....

I STILL cannot manage to get an active link to post correctly when it points to a post on this site. Do you have any tips? I can post exterior links just fine.

Also, when you say, "All posts are reviewed by a breastcancer.org administrator prior to being deleted from the site," I am confused. Are you saying they are not expunged from the system prior to review? Because posts DO vanish for our purposes once the requisite number of posters have hit the "report this post" button. An automated email goes out at that time, too. Perhaps it would help the report feature if a check-box list was added for us to check which type of violation we believe it to be. That way, you all could prioritize your reviews--i.e. when someone classifies a post as harrassment or offensive, you could attend to that before a post that hundreds have reported as spam.

It is plain the report button has been abused here lately. I do hope everyone can just "chill out" and learn how to get along.

    Tami,

Thanks for the info.  The original poster that I was referencing yesterday was Zebelin - over the course of the day quite a few people noticed her (his?) posts and were concerned; all of the posts have now been deleted by the community.  But there is another new poster today - new_becca - who is linking to the same advertising website.

badboob67 is the not the only one who can't manage to get active links to post correctly within BC.org.  I have no problem including links to external websites but I have yet to get an internal link (usually to older thread) to work.  Any suggestions?

Moderators:  As Beesie states, there is another new poster new_becca, who has joined these forums for seemingly the express purpose of monetary gain. What she and Zebelin are doing is called PPC - Pay Per Click advertising.  I googled her talkaboutcancer.cn link and found that a number of other cancer forums have been "hit" by these drive-by posters [different user names] - referring people to that same website.  They are virtual stalkers of websites like this one - having no desire to really join the community. They only post to make the post inviting enough to get the reader to CLICK on his/her link.  A pretty pathetic way to make a few pennies, in my estimation.

Beesie -- about posting an active link to anything in the Discussion Boards -- I have found that if I do it TWICE, it works.  This is the oddest glitch, and I don't understand it, but it does seem to work.

When you're writing a comment, between the clipboard "T" for copying text, and the little green tree for posting an image, there is a chain-link and a "broken chain-link."  I've never used the broken one, but the "intact" link to the left is the one that will let you link to another page in the Discussion Boards.

Copy the URL of the page you want to link to (highlight and hit "Control C").  Then start to write your own comment.  Highlight where you want to create your LINK, then click on the intact link icon, where you can paste the URL (where it says "link URL").  Then click insert.  Then submit your post.  THEN...

    Your link won't work!!! BUT...

If you edit your comment and just re-do all those steps, and re-submit your edited commented --

for some strange reason, THEN the link usually works.

Don't ask me why!  I had so many go-rounds with the techs about this, somehow I just discovered that if I was persistent, the link would work.  The techs haven't been too interested in this glitch...

Heck, I just reported my own post on another thread!!!  I have a bit of a trigger finger on my mouse hand and click, away it went.  I hope I've not got myself booted off.  Well, at least I had the courage to tell myself LMAO.

Ann, thanks, I'll have to try that.  I do follow that process for the first attempt but I've never tried to edit my post and do the same thing over again.

FYI, new_becca's posts are still on the board.  If a few other women would use the "Report this Comment" feature we can get them off.

    Beesie,

I sent a PM to the mods...the first post I saw from her actually read as fairly real....till I saw the web-site listed.  That's why I didn't report the comment.  I was going to delete the next one I saw, but haven't run into her again.  She/He...IT.. signed on right when Zebulin disappeared.  5 posts per day.  I'll go try to find her again.  Phyllis

Thanks everyone..all 5 of her posts are gone.  I'll try to pay better attention.
