Virus/Infection during Chemo

Options

Has anyone else had any trouble getting their oncologist to prescribe antibiotics for a cold/sinus infection while they are on chemo? I've had a horrible cold/sinus infection for over 2 1/2 weeks now and I can't get antibiotics from my oncologist.  He keeps telling me to take Sudafed and cough syrup and it will go away.  It's not!  Anyone else had this problem dealing with a doctor who won't prescribe meds?  Thanks!

NO!!! I even had a sniffle they were all over me. I did have a cold during Chemo and was instantly placed on antibiotics I think it saved me from getting Brochitis which I usually do. I never even told them that. They were like you need antibotics. Sorry this is happening to you. Have you tried your PCP?

I cant believe your oncologist is acting this way, I was put on antibiotics 3 times during chemo, once for urine infection, then for swelling gland caused by a toothache, and recently had a very bad cold, she gave antibiotics and send me right home to rest.  No chemo for me that day.

Maybe you should talk to another Dr. and explain to them how you feel..

    Take care

Thanks, ladies!  I finally put my foot down and told him I NEEDED the antibiotics.  He finally prescribed Amoxicilin for me 3 times a day for 7 days.  I'm on Day 3 and feeling 10 times better already.  I finally slept last night without having to wake up and blow my nose or have a coughing attack.  I think I'm on the road to recovering from my cold. I had had a cold/sinus infection after my first round of chemo, but I had run a fever and my white blood cells were up - so they pushed antibiotics on me.  This time no fever - just the cold and that criteria made the difference.  He kept telling me no fever - no infection.  I guess the duration of the cold finally just wore HIM down and ME!   I had my last chemo treatment 1/6 - so now I'm definitely on the total road to recovery!

I am so glad to hear you finally got the antibiotic!! I am one of the rare ones who don't run a fever and still need a antibiotic. Glad that your feeling better.

CONGRATS on your Last CHEMO!!!! What a good feeling it is when its the last it just gives you that boost. When I was on A/C the 3rd was so hard on me but the fourth and final one of that TX was so much better.
