Breast Cancer Metastasis Gene Identified
Has anyone read this article on the home page?
I'm wondering how you get tested for the (MTDH) gene 8q22 region of chromosome 8, anyone know anything about this?

thanks for pointing it out - I didn't read it and it is very interesting.
As for how to get tested for that... I am not sure there are even trials now? I think it is best to ask your oncologist - or if you had the genetic test for BRCA, ask them if this one has been included in the study.
I am making a note to bring it up with my doc.
Best!

Hi Lilith,
I have my Onc appointment on Feb 11th, I also will be asking about this. It seems to be a very big step, let's hope it is.

Just before noticing this thread, I printed out the article containing this info to review with my onc tomorrow. I'lll let you know what he says. However, I can't help but think-Do I really want to know? I think I just don't want any more bad news and not knowing gives me some kind of hope. Silly?

I hear what you are saying of course, BUT, what if you know, and there is some recommendation that will help. For instance, if you have the BRCA gene, they suggest you remove your ovaries, maybe this would be the same. Or maybe there is a trial that they are doing.

I definatly agree with all that you say and deep down I know it would be for the best.

I know when I was diagnosed with breast cancer I did the genetic test for the BRAC1/BRAC2 gene and was told that if any new gene discoveries they would retest to see if I also had the new gene. I had talked with my surgeon and onc. before I did the genetic testing and they recommended a hospital that did the testing.

I was told by the genetic counselor that if there was any new genes, I would need to ask to be tested again. She said that they don't keep the blood sample sent to them to analyze BRCA1/2. I did read the article but it sounds so new that I doubt it's readliy available yet, but I agree, it does sound like I BIG step and I would definately would want the test. Once I'm done chemo & rads, I'm sure I'll be worrying a bit about it coming back anyhow, so I might as well know the results of all those genes they can test for, the more negative, the least I have to worry
