First of all Goodmorning everyone! I'm so thrilled to share with all of you that my mammo came back GOOD!! CHEERS to that! I have to schedule another mammo for the left breast due to the mistake they made and only made prescription for one bresast (crazy ha) so now i have to deal with the horrible waiting process. I just pray to God that the other one comes out just as Good.
BMac~ It's never to late. Glad that you could hop on!
As far as nails, My nails did get dark and i lost more than half of that nail. I did learn that keeping the nails very very short stopped them from splitting or getting bumped and tearing.
Does anyone know of a Good recipe for Rum Cake??

CONGRATS on the good mammogram mamakaren!! YAHOO!!
Question, I had a bilateral 9/08 and finishing up chemo now. Then Herceptin and Tamoxifin. Question is would I still do mammograms? I don't think so????
-
hey cristylc-Sorry I missed your question in the other forum. PM me if that happens again! I don't have any fix for the toenails or fingernails. I just keep my toenails covered up as much as possable and cut them frequently-YUCK! You are so lucky that your disease was caught early! I can't believe your family history! At what age did you start mammo's. I had never had one until this point. They said I wasn't high risk-i think just being a female makes you high risk! I hope you are able to have kids some day. Have you asked the docs yet? That might be an interesting topic to start. My husband works with the mother of a women who had breast cancer a few years back and is now pregnant and doing fabulous!

HI Tina, No problem. I am very thankful it was caught early. Brief history..... mammograms since 24 since Mom died at 38 from BC. In 6/08 microcalcifications showed up on my routine mammogram in my left breast.... had biopsy and additional tests (MRI). These confirmed DCIS (stage 0) in my left breast. I tested negative for BRAC 1&2. I still opted for a bi-lateral mastectomy. My pathology came back after surgery with good and bad news. My nodes were clear, they got clear margins... but HER2+ and a very small tumor (.4cm) of IDC. So because of these two items I found myself facing chemo and Herceptin. It was a shock. My tx plan was 12 weekly doses of Taxol+Herceptin and then Herceptin every 3 weeks for a year. TX #11 is this week of the Taxol. They just reduced my dose some because of the side effects I have been experiencing.
-
Mamakaren - congrats on the good mammogram!
Tina & CristlC - I am also 37... Diagnosed at 36, single, no kids.
Today I had the first echo-cardiogram, EF 67%. Not bad, I guess. Strangely, my onc did not want me to do an echo before starting treatment so this first one was almost a week after my loading dose.
-
Hi Tucheta-How are things over there in Romania? I love that we can connect with others so far away that are sharing in this experience. Did you have AC as well? I had to have an echo prior to that as well. So far so good.
CristlC-My kids (as will yours!), will start at age 26. I'm sorry to hear of your Mom's death, how old were you when she passed? That's my worst fear with this d!@& disease. My kids need a mom! What side effects were you getting?
-
Count me in! I'm 41 and married with two kidlets - ages 7 and 8. I was just as blown away by my diagnosis as everyone else was.
I'll be on the H until September - this Wednesday is my first H alone (I did neo adjuvant chemo).
I'm not very good at making cocktails, but I am very good with ordering carry out.
-
Tina - I was 12 when my mom died of breast cancer. It sure makes it hard to think I will be fine when I have seen what can happen. BUT I know things have come a long way and my dx was much different. My primary side effects have been fatigue, neuropathy in my hands and feets, pain in my nailneds (right now my big toenails are about to come off and my index and middle fingers are turning black). I keep getting a rash on my hands too and really dry skin. What about you?
Tucheta, They weren't going to have me do a MUGA either becasue of my age and health. I finally insisted and they did a echo as you did.

Oopps... I have no recipe for rum cake... I like the rum.. but don't eat sugar...LOL
Go Figure...

Estepp~ That's so funny. Saturday me and husband went out and i had a mix drink for the first time since i was diagnosed. I felt pretty good might i say i'm not a big drinker but lately i have been wanting to just get really drunk and for a second forget about cancer. I know that drinking isn't the answer but i just would like to forget even if it's for a minute.
Hello gals, I have my treatment tomorrow and i really feel crappy. I just started Herceptin and i already feel weird like if i'm off balance very awful. I'm sorry i know that i created this thread so we can be on a happy party bus but just not feeling it. Tomorrow will be a better day and if not i'll make it a better day! (heck ya!)
CristlC~ I wish i could answer your question correctly, i wouldn't know but my guess would be no. wouldn't they just give you a MRI? Sorry
I wish all you a great Tuesday!

I think I told about my toe nails lifting off the nail bed and after soaking the snippers in rubbing alcohol, I snipped the dead part off. The onco said it was ok to do it to prevent snagging, splitting and/or any fungus under. I wear Crocs most of the time and shoes with rounded toes. No heels or pointy toes. I also like a Ped Egg to keep heels free from dry skin and lots of lotion and socks at night.
As with chemo, extra hydration is needed - drink, drink, drink. Tea, cola and coffee are DE hydrating. A muga scan before Herceptin is suggested, as it can cause temporary lowered heart ejection rate. I think the # they get worried about is below 50%, but it reverses when Herceptin is stopped.
Here's to a good week for everyone. HUGS, Nancy

HI Laura-thanks for the welcome. Have you always been a nonsugar eater or has it just been since your bc dx? I have read that that cancer needs sugar to live so that it is advantagous to decrease your sugar intake. I have made some adjustments like using agave nectar instead of sugar in tea and coffee. I know it is still a sugar, but has a lower glycimic index. I am a total chocoholic! I must eat it daily. How about chocolate martinis for this party?!?!? YUMMMM! Anyway, I read way more labels these days. I am also very weary of sugar substitutes. How do you do it?
mamakaren-Good luck with Herceptin tx today! Mine is Thursday and I can't wait-really! Although I feel pretty crappy after infusion, I know it's doing it's job. Go Herceptin! (Sorry, I was a cheerleader back in highschool). I had my first hard drink last weekend since A/C. I ordered it while out to eat with friends. Although I only had a few sips and my dh finished it off. I don't think I'll be getting drunk anytime too soon. It reminds me of how I felt with A/C-a never ending hangover!
CristlyC-Thanks for sharing. So sorry you had to go through that. Not fair! I was very fortunate on the Taxol-only gross nail damage (2 large toenails), barely visible blackened fingernails, and minor neuropothy that sort of came and went. Are they only decreasing the Taxol dosage or Herceptin too?

Hello Ladies,
I'm a man of 31 that started chemo 2 weeks ago (4 AC + 4 Taxol). Since my mom died of breast cancer at 33, my BRCA test will probably come back positive at the beginning of February.
Usually, I'm writting on the "Starting Chemo in January 2009'' thread but this time, I want to speak with HER2 experts!
I received yesterday the result of my second HER2 FISH test and the result was exactly the same than the first one: 1.8. So, I'm at the lower point of the equivocal class, which ranges from 1.8 to 2.2. Prior to my two FISH tests, the IHC test also revealed an equivocal result. My ONC. said to me he needs to discuss with experts for my case because he doesn't know exactly what to do. General guidelines that I found on the Web are saying that patients with score equals or superior to 2 are eligible to Herceptin. I'm once again in the gray zone, which increases my anxiety. I'm wondering if there is any HER2 test interpretation experts on this thread?
Have a nice day!
Christian

HI Christian,
Sorry you found your way here........ One thing to point out ... .my mom died of BC at 38 (dx at 35), my Aunt on Dad's side died of BC and my Dad has Stage 4 kidney cancer... I tested NEGATIVE for BRAC 1 and 2. So you never know!
I am sure you will get some responses on the HER2 interpretation. Have you gone for a 2nd opinion?
GOod luck, Cristl

I would love to come on board. I have been getting herceptin since September of 2008 and will continue every three weeks until September of 2009. All you girls seem like you will be fun to ride the bus with. I love cosmopolitons. So let's go for that ride.
-
Hi
This is my first day here. I too have a bi-lateral and just asked the doctor about the mammo's and he said that I would just get chest X-rays from now on. Hope this helped somewhat.
-
I would love to join your party! I have already had 4 herceptin treatments I will continue every three weeks until October '09. My chemo tx end next month, so I am looking forward to those "herceptin only" days.
-
Christian, Glad you hopped on i'm sure you'll have lots of fun with us on the party bus. This is a crazy bus just want you to know. Here on this bus you can have any drink you want to sooth your every emotion happy, sad, mad etc. I just had my 12th Herceptin shot and i feel okay besides all the darn SE. It's true like some say, When we have finished chemo we feel like we can conquer anything. Well, your gonna be fine just like all of us that started chemo and look where we are now! ON THE PARTY BUS!!!!! I hope this thread will help you and make time go by fast while you have some fun at the same time. What kind of drink can i get you?? (just having fun).
Welcome, everyone lets just make the best out of this ride!
-
Evening all... Boy have I had a long day... If I was not taking demerol for the implant discomfort.. I would be opening a bottle of Merlot and puttin' up my feet!
Welcome to all the new additions to our thread! Christain.. I am not sure about your question. I can only say I "heard" only strong Her2+ get the herceptin, as low scorers do not benefit by it.
You'll have to let us know what you do find out about that.
I am so sorry to those of you who lost your mothers so young! This darn disease... if they had the treatments we have today...
Take care everyone!!! I will toast you all this weekend when I am off the demerol..lol
Laura
-
Estepp, I probably shouldn't be drinking but needed the glass of vino today. So tired of chemo and ready for it to be OVER! So I will toast you with my glass of red wine! Here is to all of us!
-
Thanks CristlC!!! I had wine while on chemo. I was told a couple of glasses on the weekends would be fine.. I probably drank 3-4 glasses a week. But am afraid to on Demerol...might not wake up..:)
-
Having a "nekked" coca cola, but look forward to adding some Bacardi Gold one of these evenings.
Hugs, Nancy
-
Mamakaren congrats on your clear mammo.
So, I'm Angie 34 yrs old. I am married and have two kiddo's 11 and 3yrs old. So I have one hitting her pre teen stuff and one in his terrible 3's and I think my husband is having a mid life crisis. It's a blast at my house.
I just finished my 6 rounds of TCH and avastin this past Wed. Woohooo. I really thought it was going to kill me. I will have my first Herceptin and Avastin in 2wks. I am so hoping that these treatments are a bit easier.
On the finger nail and toe nail issuse, I don't have any advice but I am about to lose both of my middle fingers! I currently am holding them on with band aids. They have really lifted but are so sensitive that I don't want to cut them. I am more freaked out about losing my nails then I was about my hair.
Take care ladies.
-
What is avastin Angie?... You dx is close to mine ( minus nodes).. and I was not offered avastin.
Also.. welcome!
Laura
-
Avastin is a study drug I was offered. It's called the Beth study. Avastin has been shown to delay recurrence in other cancers so I thought I would give it a shot. I figure I didn't have anything to lose. It does have some side effects but it still shouldn't be as bad as the chemo. I

Room for 1 more on this bus?
I'm Juli - divorced, mother of 4 boys... 25, 23, 21 & 15. I just had #5 Taxol & Herceptin (out of 12), so will finish Herceptin end of November (I think).
Would like a strawberry margarita and chips, please.
-
Coming right up Juli! Welcome
Thanks, Ango74 I know what you mean. We sure do run a tight ship at my house also, It's a zoo! I never drank when i was on chemo, I was afraid but I did have 3 mix drinks last weekend and felt really good. Sometimes i guess we just need to get relaxed and enjoy ourselves not that we always need alcohol but it helps. All i'm looking forward to is a nice small vacation in Rocky Point (Mexico) it's like heaven there for me. I go a couple of weekends every summer and stay at a Resort called Las Palomas it's great. It's only 3hrs from where i live so it's quite close.
Nancy, wish i could join you! Karen

Hello all...another one to join your group. I'm Carolyn...age 37, married with a 4 year old boy. I finished AC + Taxol w/ Herceptin on 12/1/08, had lumpectomy w/ SNB last Friday and will start up my one year on Herceptin after I complete rads...so I will probably be on Herceptin until about April 2010.
I had some fabulous champage on New Years Eve and a Mimosa New Years Day for breakfast (I was ready to kick 2008 to the curb!)...but I'll take wine, margarita or just about anything else too.
Carolyn
