first I want to say I LOVE YOU BETH. That deep brown (almost black) color is all mine. The highlights are a little unintentional trickery from my camera phone. I have no highlights in my hair. It is a solid dark brown, my natural color.

If you like the dark brown you have, maybe consider some caramel highlights? I think that would look great. Although, I must say I love the idea of the eggplanty color. I've seen girls with that color and it looked great! BUT, if the eggplant eventually turns orangy red, I would go with the caramel. You look great as a dark brunette and the slightly lighter highlights would brighten your face.

I booked the appt for Wednesday, and I'm getting a trim and a blowout too!!! I can't wait! I don't think I'll decide which way to go until I get the opinion of my colorist, but I'm so excited.  I have a really important mtg in the city that night that could lead to a job, and I'm certain a new hair style will give me the boost I need!

I got my lipstick at the grocery store!  Covergirl, Valentino Rose, #535.  I love it!  With a coupon it was like $3.00

Rock, I am making you an honorary Yankee!

Beth, be careful of any streaks/highlights.  If you know your hair turns brassy from the bleach, it will happen again.  The bleach strips color DUH and exposes underlying pigment.  I have the same trouble with my hair.  It is very ashy but as soon as I use any product with bleach it turns the same yellow or brass or worse.  I have to be very careful.

You can still do the highlight thing, of course, but rather than strip too much color out, try just depositing color as you could do with the merlot and low peroxide/developer, no ammonia product.

I have finally gotten off my own butt and this morning called one of the better local salon/spas for a pre-appointment consult.  They said "Sure, we do that.  Can you come in at 1 this afternoon."  So, I am all excited about heading out for that today.  Hope springs eternal................I really need a haircut/style and am terrified to let anyone touch me.  You girls have to give me some moral support!

    Beth,

What my hairdresser figured out to do with my hair might be something that would work for you.  She and I picked a highlight color that's already in my hair & then use that in a semi-permanent color all over.  I am going slightly gray, and the semi-permanent color covers the gray very well and leaves my hair its natural color but with its own highlights enhanced.  For some reason, maybe because it's a good quality product, it does NOT wash out of my hair like a lot of semi-permanent color does, and it's gentler than permanent color.  I only have to do my roots about every 4-6 weeks.  Been doing this for years & my hair is in great shape.

Maybe you could look into that.  If you don't want to go to the hairdresser every month or two, you could have a good hairdresser do it first, then try to duplicate the color & product yourself.

Rock, I hope you realize what a tremendous honor it is to be named an Honorary Yankee!  LOL

Okay, I just took this silly photo looking into my bathroom mirror -- no make-up except tinted lip salve, haven't even brushed my hair - but it's a good photo of the hair color I was talking about because I just had my roots done yesterday.  I have sort of honey blond & some reddish highlights that the semi-permanent color punches up.  Good photo of my camera......LOL

Beautiful hair, Kathi.  You girls are all so cute!  Cute camera, too.  Wink

Just watched American Gangster last night.  The hair, particularly on the men, was a scream.  I mean, Russell Crowe's "do" was just so typical of that era.  It's funny how the women's hair didn't look so dated.

BTW, I was drooling over Denzel Washington.  Wow, has he aged well.............

Edited to add that I had my hair consult yesterday.  The salon/spa is VERY nice, no loud music and too hip people.  The young woman who did the consult was NOT chewing gum! and was very thoughtful and listened.  Played with my hair a bit and we had a meeting of the minds.  I am going back Monday morning for a wash/style with maybe a bit cut off the back to start.  This will enable her to get a feel for how my hair behaves.  She is willing to do more but I'm not for the first time.  I don't go all the way on a first date. LOL  Wish me luck.

good luck Tina!!!  I'm still in the great debate about my hair, but I'm leaning towards adding some golden highlights through the front and top half of my head, very thin strands, so it doesn't look streaky or chunky.

A few people have advised me to go the PLUM lowlights color route, but something my mom said has me thinking... IShe reminded me when I used to put all these colors in my hair when I was younger, and that I did the plum, and it's more of a funky hair color, where as the golden highlights are more timeless and age appropriate.

My friend said, it would be easier if I did the golden highlights, and didn't like them, to change it back to all dark brown, then to strip out plum from my hair.

So I'm still on the fence, and I know the colorist will guide me to which route is the best for my skin color and hair care routine. You know I will be posting pics the second I get home.

Tina - Good luck - don't fret...sit back and enjoy the pampering!

Girls...if you want to "see" yourself in a different light...so to speak... check out www.faceinhole.com - it's hysterical... I haven't had long hair for a while and was thinking about letting it grow... so I put my face in the hole... just to see what I'd look like. TOO much fun! And yes... cabin fever is adding to my insanity (this almost makes me want reconstruction too! lol)! I've always wanted to be able to fly! lol

I swear by Clarins sun products. They are always ranked very highly, and they have a vast assortment to choose from. I use the self-tanners on myb legs. Anywhere else just brings out the freckles and sun damage (don't call them age spots!Embarassed).

Clarins!  Oh, I love their mascara.  So, I'll try one of the tanners.

I have read than in a down economy the last thing a woman will give up is her makeup.

Laura, I often tread air in my dreams.  Don't know what that means.

Okay, I'm off to the hairdresser.  So excited.

Kathi - Your hair is gorgeous!!! I can't wait for mine to be long again. You are a natural beauty.

Whoa Mama - Laura - that picture is too cute. Funny, it makes me want to get recon as well.

Tina - good luck - can't wait to hear about the hair results (and maybe even see them?)

I have to go to the store today and buy some clothes, which I cannot afford. DOH, wrong thread.   I shall talk more about this on the more relevant fashion thread. No make up news to report.

Good buy on the lipstick Rocktober! Nice.

Tina I can't wait to hear all about your hair.  I saw a commercial last night before falling asleep for something that loreal makes, to help shrink the appearance of pores, and smooth out your skin. It was a cream/lotion, definitely not one of those face gadgets, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called.

I knew I should've written it down last night. I really want to try it.

Kathy, the use of semi-perm color to hide the silver and create highlites sounds great. I too am going grey/silver (the lighting in my photo for my avitar didn't show the silver). Last year after I got my hair cut my dh actually asked me if I had my hair highlited because of all the silver shining in it. I smacked him thinking he was picking on my silver but the next day somebody else commented on my highlites. I tried coloring my hair several years ago (home kit) and it looked OK but I don't know if I want to do it again. I help my sister cover her grey with the root touch-up in between her pro coloring, she has really dark brown almost black hair and not as much silver as I do but she said the silver in her hair really dates her and she is 16 months older than I am.

I first went to this place in the, I think mid or late 80's when he first opened.  It is in a 3-decker.  The salon was one room at the front of the first floor.

Well, let me tell you.  It is now HUGE.  Really very, very nice.  Great atmosphere.  Wonderful selection of merchandise from cosmetics and hair products to jewelry, cheater glasses, robes, that sort of thing.  This guy is has a vision and you can see he has been working on expanding it over the years.

The hairdresser was just as sweet yesterday as when I met her on Saturday.  She cut about an inch off the bottom/back and did some sort of thingy to the layers to take some of the fullness out and help them boing more.  Nothing drastic.  As I said, I don't go all the way on the first date.  This was a "Can I trust you?" session.  I can.  I'm pleased and will go back in about a month for a little more style.  She didn't even charge me for the little cutting she did!  Of course, I tipped generously.

Tina - The salon sounds wonderful, as does your session. Glad to hear you were a nice girl and not slutty. And no charge? Great service.

Any chance of a pic or two of the trust test trim? Would love to see!

Tina, sounds like a good first date!

Daff, what a lovely photo of you!  Good tip on the Clarins.

Sheila, yeah, I was really happy that my hairdresser was enthusiastic about the semi-perm color.  It ends up looking more natural because it covers the gray with one of my natural highlight colors, so my hair doesn't end up all one color & sort of flat, which can happen with permanent color.  Plus, I like that it's gentler.  I figure I'll be at this for a while before I decide to let myself "go gray," so I don't want to destroy my hair in the meantime.

Laura, LOL!   I just started a more "official" blog, which I'm calling The Accidental Amazon, and I keep wanting to draw myself or insert my face into a picture of an amazon for my blog avatar.  I'll post this if I do it!!   www.accidentalamazon.com.   I love that I now own that domain name!!!!!

It's going to be in the single-freaking-digits here at the end of the week!!!!!!  Yikes!  However, the days are getting noticeably longer.

    KAK: too cool for school!!!

Ask the Clarins ladies for samples to try. Tell them your stories, and how Clarins New York has been such a breast cancer supporter for you BC sister in Maryland yada yada. They are usually quite generous!!! Get on their complimentary facial schedule, and just buy one item after. I can recommend my favorites beside sun products: Beauty Flash Balm (mini-face lift under makeup) and the Gentle Exfoliators that you can use daily and/or when you shower. I also love their compact with three blushes. With my involvement with them, I have quite the collection!!!

Kathi, that is the funniest thing!  Love that Photoshop.  Your amazon has real "attitude." LOL

Daff, I thought I was the only one who still used that corny old expression.  Love it.

And for corny old expressions, Kathi, I will use one my mother used when it was cold out.  "Chilly as a billy goat."  Right.  You and I are in the same neck of the woods.   It's going to be 25 below zero with the wind chill for Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights.  Where the heck did this come from?  I have some news for Al Gore...............

Product updates:  The 14-Day Intervention kit from Olay was nice.  My skin is soft.  But no big difference.  I AM liking the Regenerist cream, though.

Finally found a nail product that is working for my weak nails.  Barielle Fortifying Nail Builder with calcium fluoride.  No formaldehyde.  CVS carries it along with several of their other products.  This is the only one I've tried so far.  IT IS THE FIRST PRODUCT that has stopped my nails from splitting.  GREAT product.

Aubrey Organics Collagen and Almond Moisturizing Hand and Body Lotion.  Totally non-greasy and this is the FIRST WINTER I've not had my fingertips split painfully and this lotion is the only thing I've done differently.  http://www.aubrey-organics.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=029

Raye, I'm not ready for prime time but I have to admit that

I'm seldom ever slutty, sometimes I'm merely nutty, and they can kiss my butt-y.

I have been lurking on this thread for a while, first time posting.   Has anyone read of heard about paraben in cosmetics?   Many breast tumors contain paraben and the controversy is whether it is absorbed through the skin from cosmetics.  I have used Merle Norman cosmetics for over 40 years ( am old bag - almost 63 ) with an occasional mascara or lipstick of other brands.   They do not contain parabens or fragrance.  And when checking hand and body lotions, almost all have parabens.  When I asked the onco about it, she did not know what I was talking about...

Yes, aka, we know about those.  There is a website somewhere (you can probably find it through google) that lists brands and products.  Some of us are worried about parabens and some of us aren't.

Okay girls- I'm rushing to get ready and out the door, but I LOVE MY HAIR!!!!!!!

We kept my rich dark brown color, and put honey colored (think a dark honey, but not caramel, definitely golden honey) very thin highlights through the front... it's not peroxide or bleach either!! And my hair took the color beautifully. I cut an inch of the longest layer at the bottom, and took all the layers up an inch, to frame my face better. The blow out looks awesome!!! Now to get dressed and out the door!

    I'm not wearing jeans...LOL
