Herceptin premeds
Good morning. I finished 6 x TCH on 12/24 (yay!!!) and on 1/14 will have my first Herceptin only treatment. What premeds do they give you for just Herceptin?
TIA.

I took Tylenol only. Found the H alone easy....might I say no se even. My heart remained happy the whole time too, thankfully.
I was back to work and looked forward to my infusion as a couple of hours rest...lol.
Good luck.

I finished H in August of 2008, had weekly infusions. No premeds...I too took Tylenol before every infusion as I had read that somewhere here. A couple of times I forgot to take it and didn't notice a difference. I never had any se's and also remained heart healthy.
Good luck to you and congratulations on completing chemo!

I have 2 more treatments to go. They just give me a little Benadryl. Good luck!!
-
No pre meds for me with Herceptin.
Congrats on finishing your chemo, may your Herceptin treatments be fast and uneventful!

Thanks everyone. I'm hoping my doc will go along with just Tylenol and no Benedryl. I don't like the SE of benedryl. We'll see. I'll let you know.

I had my first H only on the 26. No pre meds-I did great.
-
My doctor ordered pre-meds with the herceptin--Refused the benedryl because I was driving and it always made me sleep when I was taking it with Taxol/Hercptin. I take Adivan, Zantac and Decadron...

This month makes five years I've been on herceptin. During that time I've lived in two different states and neither onc required pre-meds for herceptin. However, I while was visiting my former in-laws in a different city (much smaller), my onc faxed my orders to a local onc so I could receive my herceptin. They required benedryl and tylenol before the herceptin. I finally convinced them after a couple of infusions to skip the benedryl. If I recall correctly, I had to sign a waiver. So I think the question of pre-meds just differs from onc to onc.

I also started out with Tylenol & Bendryl and also Dex (steriod). I did talk the onc out of Benedryl since I had a 2 hour drive but still got Tylenol & Dex every time. The nurses in the chemo room (large cancer treatment center) said each onc is different...

My first treatment they gave me nothing. When I got home I had flu like symptoms. I told them at my next treatment and they gave me benedryl. That worked and then after that I took nothing. They said some people have to get use to it and then they are fine.

I always took 2 Tylenol and a Benedryl....took a nap during the infusion and drove myself home or back to work....worked out good for me.
Good luck!

Thanks again everyone. I am almost two weeks out from my last TCH and am feeling great. I have H only next week then surgery the following week. I am so wanting to get on with it, you know?
-
I just had my last herceptin 12/26, i never took any premeds at all after the first tch.. i never needed it. If anything take tylenol as others have suggested. I had surgery after TCH and continued with Herceptin as well ...and my exchange surgery while still having herceptin.

Hey - had my first H only today. Doc first said Tylenol and Benedryl, but I asked if I really needed Benedryl and she said no. Also, I thought it was going to be a 90 minute drip, but it was only 30. Yippe!

Tylenol PM or an extra strength T and 25 mg of Benadryl.
