Nutritional and exercise advice
Having read a thread that turned adversarial about the benefits or not of conventional treatment versus alternative treatment, I'm not sure where to get the information I seek, so I'm starting a new thread to ask specifically for that information.
I've had a single total mastectomy on Monday of this week. I've planned to start my "cancer diet" at every interval in this process that I thought would be the final one. Lord willing, this is it (although I haven't heard from the surgeon with the final path report so there's still a little breath holding going on). Assuming this is it, I need to position myself to 1) fend off any further cancer stuff that might be going on in what's left of me and 2) build up my system for a reconstruction that I might have in the summer so that I'll have an easier recovery.
I welcome any suggestions on vitamins, suppliments, diet, nutrition, exercise that anyone has found beneficial.
Thanks in advance.

There are 2 books that you should read. The first is "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell. The second is "Anti-Cancer" but I don't remember the author but it is a new book. You can probably get these from your library. Dr. Campbell explains what foods are cancer promoters. A diet which is high in plant based foods is recommended. That is what I am doing.
-
My onc recommended a similar diet. A friend has the book, so I'm not sure of the title, but the author is Walter Willett, a Harvard MD who has worked on the Nurses & Professionals studies.
I've always been physically active and had a low BMI (tended to wear a petite 4), but I'm down to 105 (at 5'2") which is the lowest I've ever been in my life. My onc and PS both say that this is a good weight for me, even though I feel underweight and I've dropped down to a petite 2.
I've got to say that I feel good on it and it's one of those might-help-can't-hurt sort of thiings.
-
Just a word of caution. While I certainly believe in a good diet and good eating habits, I've always eaten healthy, exercised, and am a petite 5'4'' at 105 pounds. Still, I got breast cancer. All my friends were absolutely stupefied that I got it because I always seemed so healthy. So, I certainly believe in being healthy and it sure can't hurt, but for me, it didn't protect me. And I don't have any family history.
-
Yikes, Digger. I didn't want to imply that you could avoid cancer completely w/diet, BMI, and exercise especially since we live in increasingly toxic environments. However, what we eat (the Willett diet strictly limits animal protein in exchange for monosaturated oils, nuts, and legumes) and much more vegetables and fruit than the US requirements may play a role. It is clear that these dietary changes are stronger for other chronic diseases than cancer, but it is something that I have control over. Might as well give it a shot.
-
Thanks for your responses. If diet could cure or totally fend off cancer, I guess Hostess and LIttle Debbie would be out of business by now, eh?
I do just need to be healthier and be in a good physical shape to do reconstruction this summer. Thanks!

A good site to monitor your nutrition is www.nutritiondata.com
If you're ER+ ground flax is of benefit and if you do a pubmed search on omega 6's and breast cancer you'll see that it appears to stimulate growth however I don't remember if that is for everyone or just post menopausal.
If you're premenopausal I think a lower fat intake is important from what I've researched but I don't think it makes much of a difference in post.
Lots of exercise when you feel up to it will give you strength and the usual fruits and veggies.
While you are healing I think it would be a good idea to up your protein making sure it is a quality protein.
Good luck to you with your healing.

kateful,
Please fully understand you pathology and what it means before proceeding. Your Stage and Grade along with receptor is very important in your treatment options.
I see you are a fellow sister in Christ so I also listed some christian books that helped me in my early journey with this disease. Please read and read some more. There is no one shot with treatment. You must apply multiples to get the response you want. May the Lord guide you of the next week and months. Feel free to contact me if you need more info.

Kateful,
Please fully understand your pathology report before deciding to do anything. You need to fully understand what your Grade, Stage and receptor means. How aggressive your disease is and what it responds too. (receptor) Alternative usually addresses hormone positive bc. Keep this in mind as you read.
I also see you are a sister in the Lord. I have added to my list some books that helped me during the early stages of my journey. Please read and read some more. There ae NO short cuts. You must use multiple treatments to battle this disease. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

I give up on cutting and my pasting my list so here is just a few.
kateful,
Please fully understand your pathology report before deciding on any treatment. You need to fully understand what your Grade, Stage and receptor means. How aggressive is your disease. Most alternative treatments that is focused on breast cancer addresses hormone positive bc. Not all of us have that kind of receptor. Keep this in mind as you read.
I also see you are a sister in the Lord. I have added to my list some books that helped me during the early stages of my journey. Please read and read some more. There is NO treatment that is one size fits all for alternative or conventional. You must use multiple treatments to battle this disease.
God Bless

i found a lot of very helpful info here:
http://www.drweil.com/drw/ecs/ask_dr_weil/list_by_category.html?category=380
i especially like this site: (be sure to look at all the categories on the right-hand side):
http://www.caring4cancer.com/go/cancer/nutrition/questions/aicr-cancer-prevention-guidelines.htm
like digger, i was always extremely healthy, never even had the flu a day in my life, am 5'1", 106, vegetarian, gets lots of exercise, has a very stress-free life before being diagnosed. i do have family history of breast cancer, however. my surgeon told me that being in such good health and being fit did help me with very rapid recovery from surgery ( i was driving and back to work 4 days after double mastectomy) and will help a lot enduring the SEs of chemo and radiation.
our hospital offers free dietitian services, and i've met with mine many times to learn about how to prepare my body for chemo and radiation, how to prevent recurrence. i drink a smoothie every day - i cup organic yogurt, 1 heaping TB flax meal, 1 heaping TB flax oil, 1 cup organic frozen blueberries, 1/2 cup calcium-fortified orange juice, 1 scoop whey protein powder (22 grams in each scoop), 1 scoop L-glutamine powder (50 grams in each scoop). i take these supplements: multivitamin (with C annd E at only 100% because you can't have too many antioxidants during chemo), fish oil (300mg/day), B complex, Calcium (600mg) and Vit D (500mg)/day together in one pill.
in everything i have read, exercising every day, following a very healthy diet, not drinking, not smoking, and coping as well as we can with stress is the best we can do to protect ourselves. i had a grade 3 cancer, i'm triple negative, so my chances of recurrence are very high. my med onc (and all the research i've read) says that the best thing i can do is exercise an hour a day and eat a very low-fat diet, no alcohol, and of course no smoking (i never did) and that lowers the risk of recurrence a great deal. i walk/run on the treadmill an hour/day, i dance and run in place on the rebounder/trampline as often as i can at home during the day and evening, i am diligent about using arm weights (important for building calcium that the chemo depletes), and i have always followed a very low-fat diet, eat lots of veggies and fruit and grains, no granulated sugar, no processed foods, get 8 hours of sleep (my kids are grown and i live alone, which helps). i surround myself with loving family and friends and have learned to cull the negative people out of my life.
i don't think of eating healthy as a diet. it's just a way of life. exercise is another thing - sometimes i have to force myself to do it, but especially now i realize it's one of the main things to try to keep cancer from recurring, so i'm diligent about it, just like brushing my teeth every day. i don't think about it; i just do it.
we're here for you!
