The omega 3 oils are blood thinning.  I didn't think curcumin was though.

I recently had surgery and when I told the nurse that I took Curcurmin, she did not say anything about it being a blood thinner and that was a big question when having surgery.  Don't know about the other stuff, though.

    thanks Robin & phoenixrising.

I guess it makes sense that Omega 3 is a blood thinner.  I just added that to my Suppliment list 3 weeks ago.  I will stop taking it for now - until I am through with Plavix.

Curcumin is a blood thinner.  Here is a Link I looked up- says it under side effects:

    Thanks!

I took all of this while on a blood thinner last year or was it two years ago...  My doctor said it was no problem because they were not enough of a blood thinner to make a difference.

I think Vitamin C has a blood thinning effect too. They tell you to stop taking it before surgery.

Are you doing chemo? That can make your platelets low and make them less sticky. That could cause thinning of the blood.

    Here's something form breastcancer.org.............

    http://www.breastcancer.org/tips/nutrition/ask_expert/2007_07/question_21.jsp

     Curcumin for breast cancer control?

GPonds: Do you have an opinion on taking curcumin? It seems that out of all the herbs, this one has had the most research done on it about breast cancer control.

Answers -Gary Deng, M.D., Ph.D.: Curcumin indeed is one of the herbs that has been studied most extensively. Its major clinical potential is in the prevention of colon polyps and possibly also colon cancer. Research done on breast cancer has been conducted in animal models, where a beneficial effect was observed. The problem with curcumin is the question of bioavailability, meaning how much you have to take to deliver enough curcumin to the cancer tissue. At this point, we do not know that information. Therefore curcumin remains a promising agent; indeed, it is being studied in many laboratories and clinical studies. The risk of curcumin include it may make the blood thinner in people taking blood thinners. Also people with gall bladder problems should not take it. Beth DuPree, M.D., F.A.C.S.: It can also reduce the effectiveness of certain chemotherapeutic agents such as cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin. So again, please be very open with your physician about any supplements you are taking during treatment.

    Pam-

check to see how much vitamin E, you multi vitamin has.  Vitamin E thins your blood and I was told to stop it b/4 my surgery by my naturalpath.  Yes, curcumin is a blood thinner according to my naturalpath and I was told to stop that b/4 surgery too. Don't know about the Omega 3 but the rest are not blood thinners and I take them too.

    Hi Ladies:

I'm having surgery on my ankle in February and was wondering if Melatonin is a blood thinner?

    Thanks,

    Pat

Don't know about melatonin but omega-3s have a blood thinning effect. I was told to stop those before surgery. You may want to call your MD's office and ask staff to check with him/her and get back to you.

Good luck with your ankle surgery.

    PCONN03-

Melatonin is not a blood thinner.  I had surgery last month and my naturalpath said Melatonin is perfectally fine to take and is not a blood thinner.  I however, did not take it the night b/4 surgery since I read somewhere that Melatonin if taken in high doses make affect the amount of anesthesia your really need during surgery.  Basically, if you take high doses of Melatonin then you may not need as much anesthesia during surgery but this did not come from my naturalpath.

    Anianiau and Liz:

Thank you so much for your quick replies!!!  Yes, I do take Melatonin in a high dose at night for sleeping, etc. so I will be sure not to take it before the surgery.

I had a total ankle replacement in 2003 and now it has begun to "act up" again so the doctor is going to go in and do a "revision" on it.  Last time I couldn't put any weight on it for 6 weeks - he said this time he may let me put weight on it after 4 weeks . . .  or well two weeks less of that is still better!!

    Thanks again,

    Pat
