NO HAIR

Please help with suggestions I am using Nixion to help the hair come back it is VERY VERY slowly and I showed my ong. today when I went in for Hercepten I get it every 3 weeks I am 15 weeks out of chemo and 4 weeks out of Rad and the hair is so slow not near ready to be out in public with it. His only suggestions were try Rogaine you put it on your head its actully for men and I dont think it would work in a chemo case do you? Does anyone have any suggestions trying not to be inpatient and I wont be if this is the norm for anyone else. Ladies let me know if anyone has little hair after this long without chemo he said it was slower than average and in 3 months I should be getting hair ...

hairless happy but worried .....

Ok you may think I am crazy but, actually it would be my 17 year old daughter due to the fact that, she suggested I use HORSE SHAMPOO!!!! Yes you read that right and I have to say it is working as I am still doing chemo 4 Taxols left and since I am using the stuff I have about 1/2 inch of hair in about a 2-4 week period.  Weird I know and the bad part is her boyfriend is now saying he has some sheep shampoo that will work better and I am seriously considering it LOL.  You can get this shampoo Mane and Tail at like a farm store or my DD said Walmart sometimes carries it. Hey its worth a try right??? or have I fell off the wagon of sanity??? Maybe I don't want an answer to the last question lol.  Hope this helps, as for the norm no clue sounds to me with everything I've read thus far it should start growing somewhat within a couple weeks after chemo is over but, mine is during chemo with the shampoo so I have no real clue everyone is different I guess.

    Goodluck

my son has very thin hair on top (16) which is devasting to him, I looked into the rogaine (they o make one for women) but to many chemicals, after researching at Whole foods, I purchased a natural hair growth-hair nutrient called Bao Shi. It WORKS!!! You can google this web site bao shi.  they have it for women, it is cheaper to buy on line. he has NO side affects, and the hair on the crown is fuller. He has been taking this for 3 months and I am surprised at how affective it is. I would definetly try this before a harsh chemical treatment. Good luck! Just for the record my sisters hair came in very slow also, I bought her shampoo with Bioten and my son also uses that, and now her hair has a definite hair line all around,  her last chemo was the 1st week of Nov, and was still completly bald. Hi! I use Mane and Tail too and my hair has grown back pretty fast. I finished chemo in March, and boxed up the hats/caps in June. And I've had 2 trims since. Our local Walmart carries Mane and Tail in the pet supplies section of the store. You might want to try it. I don't think it can hurt anything! Good luck!!!!!

My hair grew very slowly when I was on herceptin.  It took about 6 months after the end of chemo (AC) to grow about an inch.

Hair growth remained very slow until about 4 months after I finished the herceptin (herceptin has a long half life and takes a while to clear the body).  After that, the speed of hair growth increased and, now 10 months after finishing herceptin, I have my normal growth pattern back.  I also have new hair in the few areas that were thin or didn't regrow.

So hang in there, the herceptin is probably affecting your growth pattern.

I rub and massage my scalp at night in bed after wig comes off (thinking it will stimulate the folicles?) and I also have Nioxin products - there is a "Hair Folicle Stimulator" or something, I've used that too. I am getting very FUZZY!!!

I hope you all don't mind me asking this question in this forum....

How soon does your hair fall out from chemo?  Is it right away?  Do most of you shave it off when it starts falling out?  I'm planning on cutting mine off before I start (so sad, I've had long hair forever) but just wondering how soon the fun starts?

I had AC every 2 weeks. I noticed it starting to fall out in "handfulls" about day 17, so 2-3 days after my second AC. I got a wig early, and on day #17 I went to "Great Clips" and the manager there cut me a really short, sassy pixie. I then just let it fall out naturally, mostly in the shower. For me it was easier than "buzzing" it.

Shocked - @ two weeks is the average. Some start a little before, some start a little after. And depending on your chemo med, you may only thin out, not lose all.

I had TAC (Taxotere, Adriamycin, Cytoxan) and at least two of those cause hair loss. It started coming out in clumps @ day 15 after my first treatment. It wasn't painful...the hair just slipped out like it was stuck in butter. Very weird experience. I had already picked out and purchased a wig which was being held at the wig store. I went and they buzzed my hair very close and then trimmed and shaped the wig to my face (see my avatar...that's my wig).

I just stopped wearing my wig this week, about 16 weeks post chemo. My hair looks kind of pixish. Shorter than I've ever had it, but it's a headful.

Dear shocked----my hair started coming out after my 2nd treatment also. I always had long hair too. Before I started treatment, I went to a hairdresser and had it cut really short. I was able to donate alot to Locks of Love. Whenever it started falling out everywhere, I just buzzed it all off. It was getting really annoying to see it on my pillow at night, or on the kitchen cabinets. It was last Christmas day that I buzzed it. Well.....this Christmas I have a head full of thick curly wavy hair. I tossed the hats 3 months after chemo was over. I know it's discouraging to lose your hair, but it is only temporary. I just always had to remind myself that if it's killing my hair, it's killing cancer cells too!!! Which is the MAIN thing!!! Good luck to you. A year from now you can look back and realize how far you've come!!! hugs and prayers to you!!

shocked, my hair didn't start coming in until about 6 weeks or more after my last chemo (4 DD A/C, no taxols, etc.)  It will look pretty skimpy for a while.  I think I tossed the wig finally at about 3 months after chemo and even then it was very, very short, etc.  After a year, it was hugely thick and curly.  After 1.5 years it is hugely thick, wavy and very long.  Don't fret.

This is great this is the most remarks I have had and I like hearing it will come back but all you ladies are ahead of me its 16 weeks today but I could not go with out the wig but believe it or not I think since I have been massaging it and using the horse shampoo I am seeing it stand up taller, did it stand up at first before it curled??? I am not getting the hair legs either but I dont miss it...I also try to air the head without a covering at home but its cold out there without hair I feel for bald people ...

Yes, the hair stood up before the chemo curls took over.

It took awhile for the hair on my legs and underarms to start growing.  The growth was also slow and skimpy.  Those areas also went back to normal the same time my hair did.

However, I  am still skimpy down below.

Did you dye your hair before chemo? Repeated dying causes hair thinning, so this could be one reason it's slow coming back. I don't think Herceptin has any effect.

I would only use a ph balanced human shampoo, something very gentle like Burt's Bees baby shampoo. Nioxin no way. Horse shampoo never.

My hair started returning 1/2 way through 12 weeks of Taxol. I have to trim it every 2 weeks it grows so fast, and I'm getting Herceptin every 3 weeks. I never dyed it and it is thick and a bit curly from the chemo, but beginning to straighten out a little.

Chemicals and dyes and blow dryers aren't good for hair. Treat it better and it will look better.

It took 16 weeks for my hair to grow back.  3 months post chemo and I was still bald.  One morning I woke up and rubbed my hand on my head and I felt fuzz.  The greatest feeling in the world.  Now my hair is 3 inches long.  In the beginning it also grew back more on one side of my head than another.

    LJ,

I have never dyed my hair.

My oncologist also agreed thayt herceptin slows hair growth (also finger and toe nail growth and wound healing).

    Hi All:

If there's one thing we know for sure from reading these posts, it's that everyone is DIFFERENT in the hair area!

My last tx was July 22 (3xFEC, 3xTAX) and I only have a little over an inch of growth, which is now starting to curl.  It seemed to take forever for it to fill in, and it's still a little sparse on the crown -- this despite the fact that I've been gobbling Biotin (2 grams) and silica.  But I had started Femara in mid-August and one of the s/e's listed is possible hair thinning.

I had very healthy shoulder-length hair, and a lot of it (as my hair stylist never tired of telling me!) and I really miss it.  I had purchased Nioxin, but then read the instructions carefully and discovered it is NOT any use at all for hair lost to chemotherapy.

That 1/2 inch per month growth rate just doesn't seem to apply to chemo-induced hair loss either!  But, other than my head feeling cold, I'm getting used to very short hair and think maybe I'll just keep it short!!  Tossed the wig and head coverings about a month ago, by the way.

Happy holidays (or whichever holy (or non-holy) day you celebrate) everyone!  Let's all look forward to a 2009 filled with good health and great HAIR!!

    Linda

My hair to was slow to grow.  I finally took my wig off in June I believe it was and now it has been a year and I have 5 inches.  I used Nioxin and also took Biotin.  Don't know if it helped at all.  Good luck to all of you.  I know the hair is the hardest part at least it was for me going through chemo.

Maura, I am saying a prayer for your freind Lisa and her family.

I started using the horse shampoo 8 days ago.  Since I own horses, I did not find it strange at all.  Actually, Mane and Tail was a fad for humans back in the mid 90's which is why Walmart started stocking it.  I did not lose all of my hair, but I hsve lost 90% of it so I am basically bald.  After 8 days of Mane and Tail, my bald spots have a thin covering of pale fluff.  I still have 3 tx left (get #4 in the morning).  I sure hope my new fluff survives!

PS:  The horse shampoo is perfectly safe.  Mane and Tail is actually pretty cheap to buy but I have some horse shampoo that is more expensive than good salon human shampoo.

I kept my head shaved until it all started coming in. Now it is raging. very thick. It was just too much to deal with the bald spots. Honestly...after dealing with cancer...I would stay the hell away from any chemicals at al...l rogaine, any of it.  eat lots of greens...keep your body healthy and your hair will follow. Really it will.

Thanks Lisa for your prayers if there is a angel she is one this lady is unbelieveable and she is still hanging in there after all this. I feel her husband will be unfortuntaly get some of his paybacks we meet under contions of both being mentally abused and walking on egg shells so maybe that is the cause for our cancer not sure but my ex did say he hoped he didnt cause my cancer if anyone did it was me for letting it go on ... I think the mane and tame is great and I think its great you have got a head start on the hair I am stimulating my head too it needs circulation I go for Hercitpen the 5 and I will show the ong. my hair growth keep shampooing

Ok I read all these post and you all got me thinking about hair re-growth.

Of course I have my (4th and ) last treatment of Taxotere and Cytoxan coming up on Jan 7th.

So naturally my focus is about hair coming back in.

First off I never did lose all my hair, I kept a little fuzz on top and that little fuzz has been growing slightly through my whole treatment.

At this point I still have my eyebrows and my top lashes. I do not know if I will still lose them or not.

A good friend gave me a huge bottle of Nioxin 2, she swears this will encourage hair growth.....She even went to a conference on this and there was discussion and support on this helping Chemo patients ( even thou the bottle does not state it).

I have only used the shampoo twice. I like the smell and the "cooling" feeling I get on my scalp.

Like I said I have only used this twice....and I do see my fuzz standing up higher....in fact my husband teased me and said I llook un even and I might need a trim.

Well my question is, the bottle I have Nioxin 2 is this different then the others have spoke of?

Just for the heck of it I did go out and buy Mane and Tail.....Who knows I'll give it a try in a few weeks.

    Denise
