Breastless Swimwear??

Options

Does anyone have information on where to purchase swimwear for the breastless being?  I've looked and even ordered some of of the Post-Mastectomy Swim Suits, but what I'm really looking for is a swim suite that doesn't even have the breast cups.  Not having breast, I don't need breast cups.  I had a BLM in July and need to rebuild some wardrobe items, this being an important one.  Surely some of you have already done this research.  HELP!  Terry

I think that maybe nike or some other athletic suit might work. Who knows, after I get my tattoo I might even try a string bikini top.

Thanks, I'll check it out.  What tatoo are you getting? Cool

Speedo makes a whole line of "racing" swimwear that I think are what you are asking for.  Their website is http://www.speedousa.com/family/index.jsp?cp=3124324.3128417&categoryId=3131376.  You can also find them year round in most sporting goods stores.

Wal-Mart usually carries some Catalina suits that are racing style with a simple shelf bra starting around February in the northeast, although they may carry them year round in warmer climates.

    mmingo777-

I had my first mast in 2004 and over my scar I had a beautiful red flower with vine type leaves. It made a world of difference on my scared flat chest. Just had a second mast last October and am having trouble healing...but if I ever do heal, I will have a matching or similar one on the other side. I had a very good artist that put a lot of detail into the tattoo. When I show my tattooed scar, instead of people giving me a look of pity, they see a thing of beauty and it makes them (and me) smile.

After trying so many different bathing suits and none working for me, I started just wearing cute sports bras as tops - they are called camisole type sports bras. I but bikini bottoms and wear the sports bra as a top. I never tried a mastectomy suit because I couldn't find one my style, so I'd go with the regular bathing suits with poofies for boobs which would invariably sneak out, be lumpy, etc.Tried a bandeau top without a poofy and it slipped way down almost showing my scars. Hello! How embarrassing. Might as well had not even worn a top.  Sports bras don't slip, they don't move. Perfect for me.

My question is this year I want to wear breast forms under the sports bras, but have no clue what type to get. I don't want to wear my regular Natura forms for fear of ruining them, but this year is the year to get new forms. Any ideas? Barbara/Erica? Thanks all.

Baywatcher - I love the idea of your tattoo! It sounds beautiful. I've always wanted to get one on my scar or near it, but the ps's have told me not to until I am positive I don't want recon. I am to the point where I am almost positive: too many risks and no guarantees. I was thinking of a heart with an arrow through it.

    Hi Raye,

I have two thoughts--if you're due for new forms and you love the Naturas, why not check and make sure they're okay for swimming. If so, perhaps get a second pair since you're due, and that way you'd have a backup in case of problems. On the Amoena site, it says Natura forms with the new Comfort+ technology are "Ideal to wear for sports and swimming," so I'm guessing they'd be fine. Since you're small and those forms are very light, they certainly won't weigh you down.

The other option is to get a pair of swim forms. I have Nearly Me "Freestyle" forms. Amoena makes something very similar: http://www.amoena.com/us/Products/Accessories/BreastformAccessories/AmoenaSwimform.htm. These are clear silicone forms with hollowed out backs, so they're light and the water easily drains out from them after swimming. They're the best solution I've found, though if I wore the Natura forms, I might just go with them (my regular forms have fabric backing, so I can't easily rinse them off and dry them when I take off my swimsuit). The swim forms are much cheaper than regular forms, so I wouldn't use insurance for them, unless insurance will pay for swim forms in addition to a new pair of regular forms.

I love your sports bra solution. For me, I'm about to turn sixty (yikes!) and though I'm slim, I think my two-piece days are over. So I've had to look for one-pieces. I've yet to find one I really love that I can also swim in comfortably. One problem is that the cup sizes of the ones I've bought are too big, as initially I was wearing bigger forms. I recently ordered an Anita suit in an A cup, so I'm hoping that will work well and look good, too (is that too much to ask???).

On another subject, Raye, I have a question for you, regarding the Amoena Jada bra. I think you wear that one, right? I have it in a 36A. I like it except that it's too high under the arms for me, where the side seams are. The side seams on the 36A are 4". Do you have any idea if the 34A might be a little lower under the arm? That's the one area where I have sensitivity, so I try to wear bras that don't hug me too tightly there. If you have any bras you like that solve that problem, I'd love to hear about them. I recently got an Anita bra, the Nastasja, which I love, but it's not seamless, so doesn't work with all my tight tee shirts.

mmingo, sorry if I highjacked this thread. Please let us know if you find some good options in suits with no cups at all. For lap swimming, that would be fantastic and if I can ever get over being self-conscious, I'd love to ditch the breast forms when swimming and just dive in flat!

    Hi Barbara.

Again, I want to thank you for your help! Very good idea keeping one pair of Naturas for swimming and one for everyday wear. I will ask the fitter if the Naturas are good for swimming; as you mentioned, it sounds as though they would be fine. It will be nice to have some "boobies" this year on the beach.

Concerning your newly ordered one piece, I don't think working well and looking good are too much to ask at all! That is the way it should work. Easier said than done, of course. What type of one piece did you get, if you don't mind me asking. I typically wear two pieces, but was at a friend's last year and didn't have a suit and borrowed a one piece from her. It really was quite flattering. Have you tried a tankini?

Yes, I wear the Jada and do love it (have two in ivory, two in black and one in burgandy), but as we've talked about before, it is a lot of bra and doesn't look so hot in the summer with a tank top on with those big ole straps showing. When I get my new forms and I am going to look for another bra with slimmer straps.

Now, I wear 34A and just measured my side seams and I believe that they are 3 inches, but I could have measured incorrectly, because my bra comes up very high as well and is about 1/2 - 1 inch lower than my underarm. ?

Barbara and Erica - I really appreciate the input and please don't apologize. This kind of dialogue is exactly what I'm looking for.  I have breast forms and the bras, but now know I will never wear them.  I'd love to donate them to someone who would make use of them, but don't know how to network with that need.  If you have any suggestions, please pass it along.  I will likely just wear a sports bra for swimming, because the one time I tried the forms with the $70.00 mastectomy swimsuit, I experiemented in the shower first, just to get a feel for the weight and immediately decided this was not for me.  At the time I was self-concience because I swim with my 11yr. old grandaughter and didn't want her to be embarrassed.  But now I know she'd be fine and it's certainly not a necessity for my own self image. I actually like being breastless at this point.  I'm six months out on Friday and finally feel like I'm somewhat whole again. Its been a long haul, but I'm tough.   Thanks again.....Terry

    Terry,

If there's a social worker who works with breast cancer patients at the hospital where you were treated, she may know where you could donate your forms. At my hospital the social worker there takes them and gives them to women who need them.

That's a great idea to test the swimsuit/forms in the shower--I wish I'd thought of that! So glad you're finally feeling good and "whole" again.

    Raye,

Well, here's the link to the suit I ordered: http://www.womanspersonalhealth.com/products/1209/Anita-Mastectomy-Swimsuit.htm. As you can see, they only have a B cup in stock. It's a pretty basic suit (that is, a bit plain), but there wasn't much to choose from that came in an A cup. I haven't received it yet, but it should be here soon. I do have a couple of suits that I think look okay, but aren't as comfortable as I'd like--one's a tankini from Land's End, great for going to the beach if I'm not going to be swimming much. The best one for swimming is another Anita suit, with a B cup. Here's a picture of a suit that's a lot like it, but in a different print: http://www.womanspersonalhealth.com/products/1535/Anita-Mastectomy-Swimsuit.htm. The tie on the leg lets you raise or lower the rise. Since the suit comes up pretty high on the chest, at least I can show a little more of my legs! You'll notice that the suit pictured in the link won't be available from that website (Women's Personal Health Resource) until April, 2009. Most of their Anita suits won't be available until then, which is why my selection was very limited. I chose to order from them because they allow returns if the suit doesn't fit, which many places don't with swimsuits. Most mastectomy suits (like virtually all the Amoenas and some of the Anitas) seem to be B/C cups at the smallest.

Thanks for measuring the Jada. If it's only 3 inches (compared to the 4 inches of the 36A), that would make a big difference to me and would be worth a try. I agree that the straps don't work with everything. For tank tops, I wear my Airway Tritex forms (with microfiber back) in an unpocketed little maidenform bralette with very skinny straps. So far so good--I haven't lost a form yet!! They actually stay put quite well, but sometimes I still like the extra security of a pocketed bra, which is why I asked about the Jada.

    Terry -

You certainly are tough! And you know what, when I go to the beach with my sports bra on with no prostheses, no one really even seems to pay attention (I have a handsome husband and handsome Choc Lab, which could account for that!). I go to the gym with a sports bra and no prostheses and although I wear a snug tshirt over the bra, no one seems to notice there either. So glad to hear you are starting to feeling whole again.

    Barbara -

The first swimsuit is very comfortable looking and I love that color in the photo - is that the color you ordered the suit in? I think the suit will be very striking on your small frame.  That 2nd suit is hot hot hot! I love the high legs with the ties. So cute. I just do not understand why they cannot manufacture suits in an A cup. That makes no sense to me whatsoever. When it comes to suits, our choices are certainly limited, whether it be style or cup size!

Good idea about wearing the bralette with tanks - I've seen some cute ones that look so comfortable.

    Thanks MB!

    Pamela -

Good luck with your surgery!  Concerning having the unilateral mast, you are making the right decision for you, that is what matters. You will know later what is right for you. When I had my surgery, I had only one breast removed; I just couldn't deal with both at that time, so much was going on in my head. One year later, I had the prophy mast of the other breast.

    Raye,

The color in the photo is the one I ordered--I hope the actual color is the same and, most important, I hope the suit fits!

Thanks a lot for your input.

Here's an Amoena bathing suit I bought this summer for $45 - I actually found it on sale in my size!

    http://www.metromedicalonline.com/3c8610.html

I'm an A cup, and it works just fine for me.  I use an Amoena 126 leisure form in it for swimming.  I think you could easily use it for active swimming, as it has detachable straps on the one shoulder.  I'm a single mast, and I like that the assymetrical styling disguises the tissue that was removed at the top of the chest wall under my collar bone.  The only issue for some might be how high it comes under the arm, but the straps are adjustable, so that might help that.  It's a very comfortable suit, and doesn't even look bad on my fat butt!  We have a pool, so I do spend some time in it!

I just bought an Amoena Lara bra, which is seamless with foam lined cups.  It doesn't come up high under the arms at all.  It's 2 1/2" at the side stay, and that's with a 38A size, so a smaller size bra won't be any wider.  The straps are not wide at all, and it should fit nicely under a tank.  The pockets are mesh, so they would work well with a climate control form.  The tag attached to it showed a very pretty lacey version of it as well, called Lena.  I ordered my bra on-line and kept my fingers crossed, and it worked out great.  When I was initially fitted, I had tried on a Jada bra, and thought it was a little too much, though the coverage was good.  It seemed to squish my remaining breast in quite a bit, which I didn't like, and the straps were rather wide.

Another seamless bra you could try that has narrow straps is the ABC Petite T-shirt bra.  It's pretty much what I was wearing continuously until I gained some weight.  Very comfortable, and the sides don't come up high.

I've found speedo bathing suits at Sam's and they work without prostheses. I saw some around Christmas, for around $20.00
