Pregnant after Lupron treatment??
Hello, I am new to this website, I regret not discovering it when I was first diagnosed. I was diagnosed at age 24 in 2003, IDC Stage 2B, did lumpectomy, 6 months of chemo-AC,Cytoxan,Taxotere, 35 treatments of radiation and tamoxifen. Cancer returned in same left breast at age 28 (last year), did mast. (left breast), re-construction, Gemzar and Carboplatin.
I am now on Aromasin, I had to quit Arimidex after one month(terrible side effects)
I still feel horrible with Aromasin bone pain etc. I'm 29 and I feel like 89.
In spite of everything, I still wish to conceive .I have suppressed my ovaries the second time around with Lupron.
Has anyone did the Lypron suppression and had a successful pregnancy after?
Please let me know... I wish to start trying in Jan 09.
take care

Nisa,
I am just now a first time BC fighter but Yes I did have Lupron and about 8 months later got pregnant with first. Actually we had given up trying to have a baby when all of a sudden I thought is it possible and cried and cried when it was positive. We had spent 4 years of infertility and me with Endometriosis. Anyhow just wanted to let you know that yes someone did get pregnant after Lupron. In fact part of me wants to say Lupron helped me because I did get pregnant and all other options had failed. Good luck!
-
I just started taking Lupron in june / 08. But I was wondering AFTER taking the Lupron does your period return or is evryone different?
also, is the goal to permanently shut down the ovaries without surgery? Anyone?
-
Thank you so so much for replying. I am awaiting the day when my period will return, it's been one month since I came off Lupron. I was recently getting "cramps" and was praying it is my period.
I can't wait to get pregnant.....
Nisa

Hi Nisa... I'm new here... Just got my first period since Lupron yesterday. Here's my timeline:
January 06 started A/C
Feb 06 last period
April 06 stopped A/C started T/H
Aug 06 Double mastectomy/1st stage reconstruction
Oct 06 continued Herceptin, started lupron/Arimidex
March 08 Last Lupron Shot/Arimidex --- couldn't handle the crazy shots and joint pain anymore. Main onco did not want me to stop. 2nd opinion onco said my mental health was important and that for premenopausal women 1-2 years is enough preventative.
Maybe in June, sex drive started coming back; in September vaginal dryness disappeared; and two weeks ago I had dreams that I got my period, and felt crampy stirrings...
Which brings us to yesterday and the full moon.... Cramps and blood and I feel like I could get pregnant if my guy just looks at me... (actually any guy -- i'm not leaving the house
oh, I just turned 36... I hope this helps. Best wishes to you...

Thank you Korekai.....................thanks a lot for sharing .....
I'll keep you posted..

My periods returned to normal when I was done with Lupron.
I do want to mention though that you may not want to try to get pregant immediately after the Lupron. If I remember right, they said wait at least 3 months so that you can get all effects of the drug out of your system and that way it won't affect the body. Now, remember I am saying "IF I remember right" so just check with your dr to see how soon afterwards would be safe. -
Hi...
Lupron does not treat infertility and you can only be on it a short period of time due to the health risks.
"Since treatment with Lupron Depot lowers hormone levels, during treatment with Lupron Depot you may experience side effects such as bone density loss and hot flashes. Bone density loss may be partially or completely recovered after you stop therapy..." (From the Lupron website).
More often than not you will have to take fertility drugs to conceive if you are having serious problems. I quote "Unless infertility is your main concern, hormone therapy is the first-choice treatment for endometriosis..." From WebMd
Lupron should also not be used as a treatment for infertility but, only for a treatment to pain from endometriosis. Endo is not usually cured
-
Louspencer, I don't think anyone mentioned taking Lupron to treat infertility. Lupron is used to TEMPORARILY suppress ovarian function in young women with ER+ breast cancer who hope to regain fertility AFTER treatment.
-
Yes, I was given Lupron to temporarily suppress the ovaries(or rather protect them from the chemo)
-
Lupron is used for many reasons. I am on Lupron to suppress ovaries to help in management of stage 4 breast cancer (and will be long term). It is also used to treat prostate cancer, endometriosis, infertility, and premature puberty anomg other things. Not all of these uses are on label - many are off label uses. Once you stop Lupron, you should resume normal menstal cycles (if you had before) and pregnancy should not be an issue unless you have other health issues. Your onc or ob/gyn can speak in more detail about this.
-
I had my periods return back to normal but can't remember how soon as it's been almost 4 years now and I am lucky to know my name some days. Lol. Anyhow, Lupron usually is not taken for more than 6 months due to increase of higher risks of alot of things and yes you should wait at least 3 months but prob more like 6 months after it just to be sure it's out of your system. They say the same thing about Birth control....so that it minimizes the effects/health of the unborn baby. HTH.

Hello all,
I am happy to let you all know, my period returned 2 hours ago.
I had my last chemo. April 2008 and last Lupron shot October 2008. (So basically 3 months and 3 weeks after Lupron....here it is...
We are trying to conceive as of now.....I prayed daily for the return of Aunt Flo
I thank all of you for your support and love
Nisa...

Congrats on your visit from Aunt Flo......
I would have responded to your post early had I read it.....I'm not on the boards much.
I actually got pregnant while taking Zoladex (like Lupron) to shut my ovaries down. I took it monthly and was on it for around a year when I became pregnant. Long story short, after they dated me for due date I realized that I had actually received two shots before finding out I was pregnant and had a prophylactic left mastectomy (pregnancy was too early to show up on urine preg test). BTW, my daughter is 9 months old and a perfect little miracle.
Best wishes and prayers for you to conceive and love every minute of being pregnant-morning sickness and all (it's nothin' compared to AC!)
-
congratulations on your little miracle. i was wondering if you started zoladex prior, during, or after chemo? I am 37 with no kids, and that's something of a big concern...whether i will be able to conceive. I just had my first chemo injection yesterday and have to make a decision regarding lupron or zoladex asap...ideally it's supposed to start prior to chemo to begin protecting your ovaries. my goal is to protect my ovaries during chemo, but i've heard this is still in study and there can be long-term effects with lupron, such as bone mass density. I don't mind short term suffering with temporary menapause, just NOT permanent damage. anyway, i would rather wait and do more research on lupran/zolodex and perhaps there will be more data in 6 months, but again, wanted to know that you were able to conceive without using zolodex prior or during chemo, but rather after. If anyone has any info, i would really appreciate it. thanks!

Completely scared is an understatement as far as I'm concerned. I have never been dx with cancer; however, I had a mass on my left ovary in 2006 along with a 10cm cyst on the left ovary and 8cm on the right. Consecutive surgeries for two months resulted in removing the mass as well as 3/4ths of my left ovary and 1/2 of my right. In October of 2008, I had cysts return on both ovaries and another laproscopy done. They found Endometriosis. My doctor suggested Lupron. Wanting to trust this, I went ahead and tried not to research online because if the information is accurate, they only state the negatives. Well, unless of course you're in a community with people who've lived the experiences. I'm 29, divorced and dating. Scared that I'll never have my chance to become a mother. I tell you, like you and many others, I pray for the day my reproductive system begins to function normally. May 11th marks 3 months since my last injection. I try not to think about it during intimate moments but I'm constantly aware if it is uncomfortable then I know to stop so I don't flip my ovary due to the PCOS. I can't imagine the fear that you strong women have had to endure given your diagnoses, you're in my thoughts.
I love that there is some reassuring information here. Do keep posting, I would love to know there is still a chance!

Hello All,I am 34 recently dx with breast cancer II, and I want to avoid "chemopause". My onco said that Lupron may help. I have been scouring the internet and I found this post. Can anyone tell me if the Lupron helped you regain your period, and how old you are and if you also had chemo? I am just waiting to see if I should do the lupron....or if it is worth it. I just really dont want to have mor edrugs than I have to...I hate cancer. It sucks.Anyone out there in their 30's with cancer and taken Lupron? email me. Thank you.Peglove
-
may I ask how old you were when you used the lupron?
-
Peglove, I am 27 and was just diagnosed with IDC stage IIA BC. I just met with the fertility specialist since my boyfriend and I have no kids and want them. He highly recommended Lupron wot help with putting my ovaries "to sleep". I also would like to know how if anyone has gotten their period back yet after taking this then going through chemo? My plan is set up for me to take lupron before chemo in a month, do the chemo, radiation, then the oncologist says she'd like to put me on tamoxifen for 3-5 years. I am nervous because we want kids in the next few years and I want to preserve fertility but also make sure i am completely healthy so as to not go through all of this again and have it recur since my cancer is hormone driven. Please let me know if any of you have taken Lupron for this purpose and your outcome.
Thanks!

hi jewelzw7 - I'm currently having zoladex shots (which is same sort of thing as lupron) to shut down my ovaries during chemo. I only had 3 x monthly shots to get me thorugh. My onc has said I have to take tamoxifen for 5 years, but when I saw my fertility specialist she said to me that a lot of women go off it as long as everythign is going ok after 2 years to try for a baby and then can go back on it afterwards. I was 28 when diagnosed and me and my husband were already trying for a baby when this happened - when the onc said I had to wait for 5 years I cried just was the biggest indication to me that life had changed. From all assurances given to me given our young age everything should be ok - fingers crossed hey?

Hi Ladies.
Just wanted to post some of my info for anyone who is curious abou periods and Lupron. Here's my timeline:
Chemotherapy finished in August 2008, then Started Femara
Chemopause ended in March 2009
Started Lupron April 2009
Last Lupron shot was November 2009
Last Femara was February 2010
Period returned July 2010 (today!). That would make it 8 months after my last Lupron shot. I am 33 years old.
I am not trying to conceive, but I know the feeling. Good luck to you all.

Edited to add info: I did not use Lupron for fertility purposes. Instead, it was to keep me in chemopause to continue with Femara.
-
Peglove,
My Sister-In-Law was 32 when she went on Lupron to supress her "one remaining ovary" during her very aggressive chemo treatment for stage 4 germ-cell cancer (female version of what Lance Armstrong had). I believe she did that to preserve her fertility as well. She was pregnant within a year after discontinuing Lupron. This was with only one ovary, and without even trying. So, yes you have a good chance.
Best wishes to you.

Hi everyone, im so pleased i have found this site as i having been seeking help for months now. I had chemo and was on zoladex and tamox for 2 yrs. I finsihed them both 6 mths ago and no periods back yet!!! My estrogen levels are still low and i am worried i am never going to get my periods back. We so want children and feel quite desperate - has anyone been in this position and how long did it take after stopping zoladex to get your periods back? please reply
-
Hi ladies! I'm interested in this topic. Any updates?
-
I did 6 months of Zoladex during chemo. My period came back about 7 months after the last chemo/Zoladex. 10 months after that I was pregnant (conceived naturally with only 1.5 ovaries) and I am now 31 weeks pregnant. I wish you good luck: it can happen!!
-
Yes,One can get pregnant after taking Lupron but it is recommended to wait some time before starting to try and conceive. The reason is because of the risks associated with this medication.
I would recommend checking with your doctor as well as to see what they say!!
All the BEST!!

I was diagnosed at 26. Had a mastectomy, 8 rounds of a dose dense chemo regimen, 7 weeks of radiation, 4 years of tamoxifen ( came off early to try to get pregnant), and I think a little over a year of Lupron. First try and we were pregnant. It was a dream. We now have the most rambunctious and hilarious 2 year old. Since then, I had one molar pregnancy, which we will never know if that was because of treatments, and a second child. A sweet, loving mama's boy that I love to pieces. There is good livin' to be had after all those stupid treatments! But through all of my cancer scares, I never feared death... Until now. I am so scared I will miss their milestones down the road...

This post is one of two I could find when I was desparately searching for ANY information on Lupron treatment and how long it would take for my period to return. There is a tad of annedotal information on the old YSC message board but not the new one. This was important to me, and I wanted to post for other women when I had my own answer.
I was DX'd in May 2007 at 30 years old. Stage 2A. Bilat. Chemo. ER/PR+. Was on Femara and Lupron from Jan. 2008 to Oct. 2011, so nearly 4 years. I had not had a period in nearly five years when I went off meds in Oct for family planning. Without ever getting my period back, I somehow got pregnant on my first ovulation cycle. Holy moly and am now about two months pregnant.
Stopped Femara and Lupron in mid. Oct 2011.
Sharp pains in ovaries and hot flashes stop in Jan 2012.
Moisture returns (sorry) and other sexual side effects cease shortly after, along with the return of pimples and hormones. Skin is softer. Lost a bit of weight.
All hot flashes gone by Feb. 2012.
Start feeling super PMS-like symptoms in mid-late March 2012.
Exhaustion and crabbiness in early -mid April.
Sensitivity to smells and mild nausea in mid-April. Decide to take a home pregancy test and discover I am pregnant on April 20. Get a blood test at onco and confirms that I am very pregnant.
Now, on April 22, I finally get to worry about something other than cancer for awhile. I'm 35 and still haven't had a period in almost five years.
So, I post this because unitl literally a few days ago my hope of having children was up in the air. Just hoped and hoped and hoped everything would be ok and now I hope my pregnancy works out. I hope this story gives someone else hope and a bit more of a fleshed out timeline. From my research, if the period is to return, it tends to come back within 6-8 months at the earliest and often within a year after stopping Lupron, though I think my ovaries kicked back in sooner. And, let me tell you that if you stop having hot flashes it is a good sign and you should start pre-natal vitamins before your period comes back (or start using protections anyway).
Hugs, ladies.

Just adding what the main Breastcancer.org site has to say about Lupron
"Once you stop receiving Lupron, the ovaries begin functioning again. The time it takes for the ovaries to recover can vary from woman to woman."
