If IDC comes from a reputable source, it is nothing more than ground up cuciferous veggies like broccoli. I have been taking it for a year, 1-2 caps a day. I sometimes get it from my chiro, a brand called metagenics, made in CA, or at Vitamin Shoppe.

I take Indole 3 Carbinol by a brand called RX Vitamins.  This is the brand of Indole 3 Carbinol my naturalpathic physician likes.  I was instructed to take 1 tablet daily on an empty stomach.

I have ordered this brand on line since it is cheaper on line than at my naturalpath's.  If you want to know the company I ordered from just let me know and I'll dig up the paperwork/receipt.

Life Extension makes an indole 3 carbonol supplement that I take. I have not checked if it contains flax seed. My onc said flax seed is ok to use.

I haven't heard not to have flaxseed either--I am taking NOW brand I3C, two caps a day.  Just curious though Liz--the bottle says to take with meals and you were advised to take on an empty stomach?  I haven't found find a naturopath near me yet and am walking this path on my own.  Empty stomach would be easier, rather than waiting until I eat to take it!  Did your nat. explain?

    Catlover-

My naturalpath explained that it is better absorbed if taken on an empty stomach. If taken with food it may be less absorbed.   I had confidence in my naturalpath since she specializes in women's health and treats many breast cancer patients.  My breast surgeon recommended her to me since she has been sending her breast cancer patients to her for over 20 years.   My stomach gets a "little" upset if I take the Indole 3 on an emplty stomach so I take it on an empty stomach and eat about a 1/2 hour later.

    Thanks Liz--

I had been taking it right before eating, literally before I took the first bite, but maybe I'll try to do it a little earlier like you're doing.  I'm having no luck finding a dr. in my area who is helpful with this, but I'm just outside of Nashville, for Pete's sake--surely there's one somewhere out there!  My onc will probably dump me when I tell her I'm not taking the Tamox, so it would be nice to find a dr. who is supportive!

Lorraine, I3C is not a drug. It is a supplement that is basically ground up cruciferous veggies like broccoli and cabbage. It has no side effects and I have not heard of any interactions. I have been taking 100 mg for the past 6 months. My estrone level went from 53 to 11. There is something called the sex hormone binding globulin that allows the estrogen to bind  to cancer cells. I still am having trouble with all the explanations. But my doctor said it is really great that this number went from 127 to 69. There is also something called the free androgen index. Mine went from 2.06 to .90. My estrogen metabolism number was .45 and mine stayed the same. I guess this is an important number and she would like to get it lower, so my doc is recommending I take two tabs a day, instead of 1, or 200 mg. My estradiol and estriol levels stayed low. My progesterone level is also very low. She wants me to take a natural wild yam supplement to bring this number up, but I have been reluctant to do so, but now I am reading about the importance of hormone balance, which includes adding natural not synthetic progesterone after menopause because it drops so much. I will find the link I had about the importance of progesterone and post it.

    Vivre,

Is your doctor using blood tests, urine tests or saliva tests to measure your hormones?

I use blood test. My understanding is that blood tests are okay for women who are menopausal since estrogen levels are more stable. The saliva tests are for women still mentruating because the test needs to be done at different times in a cycle, so they can be done at home with saliva. Is this what you heard?

    Vivre,

WHich kind of test to take has been an issue for at least 10-12 years. I agree, I don't think any kind of test is reliable if you are perimenopausal since the fluctuation is so great. And even post menopausal, it's not clear which test is most accurate. One of my doctors did blood and saliva and they were about the same. But That's just one case. I see one of the labs is using "peripheral blood" testing, i.e., finger sticks, because they feel arterial blood doesn't reflect what is in the actual tissues.

BUT: My main issue with lowering estrogen is that it has never been shown that lowering estrogen prevents recurrence. And that is the bottom line.
