Inauguration Day in DC Round-up!
I am starting this thread for those of us who are going to DC for the historic inauguration of Barack Obama. I reserved my flight and hotel on election night, and now I hear there will be upwards of 4 MILLION of us in DC for the event.
I don't have tickets to any event, but I am thrilled to be part of the crowd.
I would love to know who else is going and maybe plan to meet up for the celebration(s).

D, you know obviously I'm not going but just had to say "have a blast"!!
I know you will. Just don't get too drunk.

Z,
I know it's impossible, but think how cool it would be if you could join the celebration? I won't get too drunk -- I want to be able to a send text message to you while I am celebrating in the streets of DC! Maybe I can even figure out how to send a picture from my cell phone...lol.
Any other ladies going? Amy, Felicia, Cherryl? Bueller? :-)
-
You won't get drunk? Do you think I'd believe it?
Who was that chick who didn't even realize who she was talking to until she finally asked me who I was after having exchanged a couple of messages when I sent her a text to offer my congrats for her new president? *lol* That indeed was hilarious.

Donna, I'm seriously considering it. I have a college buddy just outside of DC who said we'd have a place to stay, but I also don't have tickets to anything. Still trying, though...
-
Z - In my defense, ingestion of cocktails not withstanding, when I received your text that night, all that showed was a number, not a name. But the content of your message made it CLEAR that you were a friend...lol. Heck I was getting calls, instant messages, emails and text messages from several people that night.
Felicia - I tried to get tickets from my Senator and Congressman. Unfortunately they both have (R) behind their names. At least Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison responded with a polite "sorry, but we are all out of tickets" email. Congressman Burgess didn't even extend that common courtesy. I am hearing that the mall will be lined with big TV screens and that they expect everyone to be able to enjoy the festivities. I hope you come join the fun! Definitely let me know.
-
did- I'm planning to go bar a blizzard. What exactly do the tickets entitle us to? I heard there were several hundred thousand tickets, so that leads me to believe... not much. LadySuz and her mom and daughter are going too.
-
Any - we definitely should try and meet up at some point. I am flying in on Sunday and flying out on Thursday. I plan on using the extra days to do a little sight-seeing. It's been over 20 years since I was in DC.
-
Oh definitely. I think we should all meet up! Are you staying with friends?
-
As a local I'm pretty much not planning on getting anywhere near the mall over those days.
But I'd like to meet up with you. Just not in a screaming crowd of 4 million, outside during the coldest month of the year!
-
Amy - I am using my hotel points to stay in Silver Spring, MD (one of the perks to offset all the dreadful time I spend on the road!)
Rose - I will be there from Sunday night through Thursday morning. If you can recommend a good neutral place for us BC girls to meet up either on Monday or Wednesday, I'll be there! My calendar's open, except for Tuesday, of course.
Just post or PM your thoughts on where, when!
-
Wow, people are really doing this. I am a huge Obama supporter and I live in DC and I think I'll be watching on TV, unless the weather is unusually warm for January. It can be brutal out there. So think of me and Rose, so close yet sitting in our cozy warm homes while all of you are freezing your hineys on the mall.
-
MOTC - It is ironic, to say the least, that I detest being in large crowds and to a lesser extent, being cold! For instance, I would never be persuaded to go to Times Square for New Years! And I lived in Indianapolis for 5 years and never went to the Indy 500. But something about this election compels me to go and be part of the crowd, come rain or shine!
Let me know if you want to join me, Rose and others on one of the off days.
-
I will be there!!!

Congratulations on getting to go...I'd love to, but can't afford it right now...HOWEVER...Janury 20th, happens to be our 41st wedding anniversary...so we will be celebrating TWO events....I can't wait.
-
Well, we're expecting four million people to flood in here for the inauguration. I picture long lines to get on the subway, lots of waiting in the cold, hungry, having to go to the bathroom. No thanks. I'll be watching it on TV. With a fire going and a cup of hot cocoa.
But I will miss being a part of the crowd and seeing all those people from all over.

MOTC - now wait one cotton picking minute! I thought Obama was the Messiah - that's why I voted for him! He should be able to make the weather warm, sunny, the lines short and pleasant, and produce port-a-potties like fishes and bread, right?
Oh please don't tell me I was duped into voting for a mortal human being with no special powers!

Are you coming by yourself?
-
They've decided to allow bars to stay open 24 hours during inauguration in DC.
-
Rose - Yes, I am coming by myself, although I have a lot of friends and co-workers who going as well. We just aren't coordinating to go en masse. I do plan to attend the The Netroots Nation Yes We Can Party, being coordinated by my favorite bloggers, on Monday night.
MOTC - With bars being open around the clock, I hope people don't get too wasted! But still, it's good to know there will be establishments I can slip into when I need to warm up or pee :-)
-
I hadn't heard the bars will be open 24 hours a day.
That doesn't sound too safe. You'll have fun at the bloggers party. Is Netroots the name of the blog?
-
Rose - it is a group of bloggers sponsoring the party:
The event is co-hosted by AmericaBlog, Congress Matters, Firedoglake, Fivethirtyeight.com, Frameshop, Jack & Jill Politics and myDD. Sponsors: CommonSense Media and others TBA.
I agree that 24 hour drinking sounds sketchy, but I trust that there will be adequate security. If it plays out to feel unsafe, I will get the hell out of dodge!
So, time for a roll call! Who else is going? Felicia, Amy, CherrylH, LadySuz, LauraP? Anyone else? Please let me know if you will be there!
Rose and I plan to meet up on one of the days, so any other BC sisters who want to meet in person, please let me know.
MOTC - I know you aren't going to the inauguration, but if you are interested in meeting up, let me know.
-
I don't know if I'm going to be able to go or not. I sure hope I can but I probably have to stay somewhere monday night since I don't think my body will be up to doing it in a day trip. I think lots of places have bars open 24 hrs. Doesn't NYC?
-
I'll be watching on TV, too, at work.
If you all wear pink with your Obama-wear and parkas, maybe we'll spot you!!!!
I think half my neighborhood is going, and we are on the left coast.
Our county is sending 150+ school kids. It's historic.
I was tempted to go too, but I'll just re-live election day over instead.
Hope!
Take care,
--Hattie
-
Hattie--left coast? As in West Coast? the liberal one, I'm sure! LOL
I'm on the left coast also--so won't be making the trip. but I too will look for all pink outfits so I can spot my cyber sisters at their best. Have a grand time!
Keep the hope alive.
-
Hey All!
Happy New Year!
Thought I'd bump this up, since we are barely more than 2 weeks away from watching another historical event unfold.
Anyone else going to DC?
-
I won't be making the trip (thought it best to watch from the warmth of my living room - especially with its proximity to a restroom), but I'll be there in spirit!
BTW, what is up with that new Pepsi logo? Anyone seen it yet?
-
Felicia,
You are wise to stay warm and near indoor plumbing!
You are right about the new Pepsi logo:
Compared to the Obama 08 logo:
I guess everyone is trying to cash in on the only good positive news in the world at the moment!

I know I mentioned this before, but my 16-year-old daughter is going with some of her classmates to the Inauguration. They've got tickets to the parade and swearing in, and the national group that's sponsoring the tour is holding their own inaugural ball. I told my daughter she HAS to take her video camera and do lots of interviews (and get shots of the Obamas of course). I'm hoping she'll put together a YouTube doc about her experience, or write a play about it. Hopefully she won't go into cold weather shock while she's there.
I, however, am staying in LA and will watching from the comfort of my couch!
-
Hi everyone! I sure wish I was going, but alas, I will be watching from home. I hope all of you that ARE going will be sure to post on the happenings. I am so excited that Bush's days as President are widing down. I really was hoping he would pardon the two border patrol agents though.

Amy G.,
I too am excited about memorializing the event with movies and pictures. In fact, I already have the perfect photo album (a Christmas present from my mom) for my favorite pictures. I will also do some videos. I doubt mine will be "YouTube"-worthy, but I will definitely share links to them here!
