There were posts a while ago about an organization that provides free house cleaning to cancer patients. Maybe dust is making the asthma symptoms worse. I had bad bronchitis during the last couple of months of my last pregnancy and they couldn't treat it well while I was pregnant (at least the doctors I was seeing then - if I had known more then I would have demanded referral to a allergy and pulmonary specialist).

Once the bronchial tubes and lungs were so irritated it took a long time to recover. My GP treated each episode and didn't check between. So it would quiet down and then flare up. It didn't resolve until I started seeing an allergy pulmonary specialist who treated it as a chronic condition and kept me on medication to keep the airways relaxed. Then the medication was tapered off and with appointments periodically to check how they were doing. It took years to get to the point where I didn't need to take a puffer and medication on trips just incase a flare up happened. The wrong fragrances, dust, etc could set me off. After a year or so of not getting the right treatment it took about 10 years before I was totally clear and didn't have to worry that every cold would turn into bronchitis.

So, if you are having breathing problems I hope you see a pulmonary specialist. Maybe breathing difficulty is causing or contributing to the racing heart problems.

I had TCH (to avoid heart problems), but the Herceptin was stopped when my EF went to 48%.  After 8 weeks, it was 44%, so we stopped it permanently.  It took 18 months before my heart went back to normal, but yippee, it DID recover.

By the way, my onc didn't suggest I see a cardiologist, but when I asked her if I should, she said that would be a good idea.  Wierd.

So best of luck to all of you.

MY EF was 63 pre-chemo.  After 4 TCH (last one was 9/12) and one Herceptin only (10/1), I had a second MUGA and my EF showed a drop to 48.  My onc said this was on the low end of normal but her concern was the number of points it had dropped.  I was taken off Herceptin for a month.  My most recent MUGA result was 60 - high enough to re-start Herceptin.  Yay!!

I was scanning this site for more information on Herceptin and the heart.  I have had 11 Herceptin treatments (the first 6 with chemo)   I'm wondering if you ladies that had to stop the Herceptin had any symtoms that you noticed.  I feel fine and I have been working out a lot at the gym, but it just seems like my heart is pounding louder than usual.  It did it through the chemo and my last echo was in July and it was fine to continue.  It just makes me wonder; I guess I'm a worrier.   The doctor always asks me if I have trouble breathing and I definitely do not.  Any information would be appreciated.  Mary

My EF was 66 after A/C ... then it dropped below 50 after 12 weeks on weekly Herceptin/Taxol.  On the 12th visit, they gave me a triple dose of Herceptin but probably gave it too  fast???  After 3 months off, due to a 48 EF, I rebounded to 50 and they put me back on....every 3 weeks.  I have gotten back to 54 and that was the last MUGA I had ... way back in Jan 2007!  Finished in March 2007 and never had another MUGA.

    Good luck ladies!

I've been on herceptin for about 3 years.  My muga eventually dropped to 50 and I skipped a dose.  Took another muga and it had climbed to 63.  I was shocked at how quickly it rebounded with only one missed dose.  My last muga was 61 so it's dropping again.  I was also surprised that even though I missed one dose, when I resumed treatment I had all the side effects that I did with my very first treatment.

    Good luck everyone.

Just so you know, the difference between a 49 and 51 could be NOTHING ... sometimes, the reader of the scan can pick or see the best readings.  I know that some people would be a 49 and my dr would tell them to read it again.

    Hi everyone,

I just had a muga a week ago and met with Onc. it has gone up to 51% so we started up the Herceptin again. I too got all the se from first. Extremly tired and achey all over and drippy nose is back ugh!!!! My Onc. is doing repeat Muga in a month to check it. My onc. has not suggested me to see a cardio. but I am going to ask her to. For my own peace of mind. I want to be checked at least once a year.

I went to buy the Co Enzyme Q-10 and boy is that expensive and the omega also. WOW monthly it would cost me . I am going to check walmart prices cause I would like to do everything possiable to help myself. I just worry cause I am on so many meds right now its crazy. Due to Neuropthy. They are thinking and I am going to spell this wrong I have Fibromalagyia, also. So thats why I am in constant pain, I see a reumotoligist in Jan. I hate it that I have to wait so long. My primary did put me on Lyrica awhile ago and just increased it . Its suppose to help that and neuropthy. But no relief yet!

Hi ladies, I will be starting Herceptin in Dec. I am worried that my EF will drop while doing Herceptin. My EF dropped from 51% to 31% after adriamycin back in January. I was put on CorgegCR and Lisinopril and will have to take them for the rest of my life. My EF has currently came back up to 51%. My cardiologist wants me to see a heart specialist before I start Herceptin. I will get an echo after every tx to catch my EF before it starts to drop. My onc is talking about me getting a heart transplant or getting an pacemaker. WTF!!! I don't understand some of these docs. I just hope to do well on Herceptin. Wish me luck!

Sharon, I do wish you lots of luck. It all sounds so scary.  I have my 12th Herceptin tomorrow and my 3rd echo on Friday. If the echo is okay I should be able to get the last 5 treatments.  I just wonder and worry about it all the time.  God Bless, Mary

    Thanks ladies.

Mary-I hope everything goes well with your echo and you are able to continue txs.

Lisa-My onc is a nut. I don't know what is going to come out his mouth from one visit to the next. He's military and tricare won't let me go outside to another onc so I'm stuck with him until we pcs which will be 2010. He really didn't want to send me to a heart specialist at first...I had to stand my ground and make him write out the referral while I was sitting with him because I knew he wouldn't if I just left without it. I can't stand him!!!

    Take care everyone!

    Sharon,

I am so sorry you have to put up with a Onc. you don't like. And to scare the crap out of you to boot!!! But at least it seems they are doing everything right. I get scared to cause although my EF level was high to start with it did drop alot after A/C and then did a steady decline after I started on Herceptin till they had to give me a break for 6 weeks. My muga did come up but not by much so it will be interesting to see what it is next week. If its dropped again I am going to request to see a cardiologist so I can hopefully keep the damage to a minum and also I would like to be established with one after all is said and done. Just cause between Herceptin and A/C its done a number on me!

Best of luck to you and hopefully you can continue your TX as planned!!!

                                                    Best Wishes to you-Bridget

    Bridget-

I get the CoQ10 at Sams club for a fraction of the cost I paid for the first batch at the health food store.  I paid about $25 for 60 softgels, 300 mg.  They also sold it in the 200 mg dosage depending how much you take; the 200 mg capsules were less expensive.

    Hope that helps.

Hello Bridget, Today I went to get my Herceptin then they told me that I could not have it due to my MUGA scan. It was in the high 60's and then it dropped 10points lower and I'm scared out of my mind. can't stop crying all morning and very nervous. I would like to know if anyone knows if these 2 months have done me any good taking Herceptin. It's bad enough we have to put up with BC and then we have to put up with all these stupid side effects that can effect us also! I feel so scared and then pissed off I don't know what to think right now. I went and spent the day with my husband at his work. He is a superintendent at Haven Golf Course and it is so peaceful and beautiful there. I just want to have some peace of mind and gather myself. I have a appointment with the cardiologist Dec 1st. I'm leaving Wednesday to Las Vegas for my son's football game so maybe I'll get my mind off all the negative stuff. Sorry guys but I really needed to talk to someone. Thank you!  Lots Of Love!!         Karen

Hi Karen, I know it is scary, but try not to worry.... Your heart should recover just fine.  Mine did.

My MUGA went from a baseline of 63 before my chemo treatments started, down to 48 after 5 Herceptin treatments from July through October - four were part of TCH and one Herceptin only.   I was also very upset at the news that the Herceptin was giving me this serious side effect, though my Onc did say that 48 is on the low side of normal.  It was the point drop that required a break from the Herceptin.

Good news is that the next MUGA showed recovery of EF right back to 60.  I started back on Herceptin two weeks ago.  I will be monitored every three months until Herceptin tx ends in July 2009.

    Keep the faith and stay strong.. {{{ HUGS }}}

    Karen,

Like Michelle said its more about sudden drops an of course they do have a baseline when they will stop and let your heart recover. Don't worry they will figure it out and put you back on. I had a 6 week break although my heart has not recovered as much as they would have liked but they started me back and today after 1 month back on Herceptin I go for another Muga. Its very good your seeing a cardiologist. Mine wanted to wait until we get this back and then make a decesion wheter I need to go to a Cardio. I am going to go to one regardless. Whether it comes from Her or my PCP so either way. I had a good reading and all this meds have screwed me up I was at 78% when all this started and 46 at the lowest its ridiculas and it was the A/C which dropped it and Herceptin is just helping it along. Don't worry to much BAD for the heart and just take a break from it. Do you do every week or every 3 weeks. I chose every week I think its better if we have heart issues.

                                                                          TakeCare!!!!!!!

Thank you MichelleI really need some comfort right now. I'm going to Vegas very early in the morning and I feel very nervous don't know why. I guess when I get there I'll feel better and maybe I will forget all about everything. You say that your EF went back up to 60, so does that mean that your heart will never go back to 63? I hope it does.

BridgetI took Herceptin every week because I was afraid that it would harm my heart so I figured I would rather take a lower dose. I didn't care about going every week. Thank God that I went with my gut feeling on that. Also I'm glad that I told my onc I wanted to get a MUGA every 2 months instead of 3 months. Thanks for your support all of your responses mean a million.

    Karen - We are here for one another through it all.  I have found solace and understanding by reading and posting here and we must remember that we are not alone in this.  It may feel like it sometimes, but part of being women, and now sisters in the bc fight, is that we want to help one another.. It is part of our nature and we must embrace that  {{{}}}

I hope you enjoy the time in Las Vegas for your son's football game - that is exciting!  Who does he play for?  It is so important to take time away from everything we are going through to have fun, spend time with family and, I feel, to always count our blessings!

My onc said that she believes my EF will be stable and probably go right back to its original functional strength during treatment.  I try to be vigilant about staying healthy in every other way - eating right, exercising, taking appropriate supplements - to help my body in this fight.  I am grateful to have Herceptin and stay hopeful that it will be our cure.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Hi...I had 1 year of Herceptin which ended in January 2008.  (I also had a/c & Taxol)  My muga scan results ranged from 54 to 62 during Herceptin.  It has been almost a year since Herceptin and my muga scan result yesterday was 49...my question is why would it drop to 49 now?...Over the past couple of months, Ive had a rapid heart beat at times, even waking me up in the middle of the night.  My oncologist listened to my heart and said it sounded fine at my last app 3 months ago.  Should I be concerned?  Also, I have a heart murmur.  I am 45.

    Wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving!

    Thank you!

Hello Everyone!! Las Vegas was fun,My husband and I went to a night club in Ceasers Palace, It was so nice to go out like we used to before I was diagnosed just like old times. The weather was very nasty on the way up there. Lots of fog could'nt even see in front of us very stressful. My son  team won the championship we play for the Rams Michelle. Today I went to see the cardiologist and he said that everything sounds OK but a little concerned about the heart muscle so I need to get a echo on Monday so I hope that everything comes out good. I also wonder about if my heart will decline after treatment. Just don't understand why this happened so soon only two months. I also wakeup in the middle of the night with my heart beating so fast but that would happen to me even before the Herceptin, It is happening more often so don't really know where to blame it on either Herceptin weakening my heart or I'm just having anxiety more because of my results about my heart. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!

    Hi,

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday, with lots of good food, family, laughter and a day away from this awful journey we are on.

I got my muga scan results back and my heart has stayed stable for the month I have been put back on it. It did not go higher or lower it just stayed the same which is on the baseline. But my Doctor is letting me continue and will not recheck for another 3 months which worries me alittle but oh well she's the boss. I have just adopted a rescue dog a chinchua (sp) boy I don't know what I am going to be getting into. But she is very cute and she is 8. I won't have her until the 15th due to they spay and do teeth and shots stuff. But they are going to give her her rabies shot so I can go visit with her and get her to bond with me some she has been used for a breeder dog. This lady had 35 dogs never mind the cats and horses that are sickly out back and she kept them in a doublewide trailer. I think she kept the girls in one part and boys in another she had my type 22 of those pugs foxterriers yorkies a couple of shitzues who were just mangy looking the others look pretty good. But I can not believe someone could live in the same house with all these just visiting gives me a headache with the barking. I am hoping things go well and she will get along with my other rescue a pomerian are you getting the picture yet?? I drive my husband crazy. My pom is beautiful and a very nice girl. She is very social maybe to much she is a little ocd with licking you. LOL!!! Boy they sure do bring a smile to your face though! by the way yes I have bought clothes for the new Dog and boots that look like ugg boots I have way to much time on my hands and I am addicted to Ebay!!! I hope everyone is doing well and taking deep breaths on everything.

                                                                      Hugs-Bridget

    Hello Bridget

I'm glad that you got a dog they seem to understand us sometimes more than humans. I have a poodle that my husband got me right before my chemo so that I would'nt feel alone but who could feel alone with four kids LOL! He keeps me company when the kids are at school. Monday I go get my echo so very nervous. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    Lots Of Love, Karen

I just had my second muga after my final A/C treatment. It went from 58% to 51% in 8 weeks. My Onco still went ahead and started my on my Taxol/Herceptin yesterday, but wants me to have another Muga this Friday. We'll see.

I just had my first MUGA scan since beginning my Herceptin treatments in August (but, actually my 3rd MUGA since beginning chemo in April). I am supposed to get a MUGA scan every three months while on the Herceptin. I just got a call from my oncologist today. We had to cancel my treatment appointment this week, and he is consulting a cardiologist, since my MUGA "scores" have gone from mid-60's to 43, on this last test. I am not overly thrilled with the news, but, I have learned to take most "bad news" much more calmly these days. It might end up being not a big deal at all, or, I may have to take some heart meds while finishing my Herceptin treatments, or, I may have to stop taking it altogether. Whatever happens, I change nothing by getting upset. Actually, I laughed, and said to myself, if the cancer doesn't get me, the treatments will! (I had major problems through my chemo treatments, with extremely heavy, continuous menstrual bleeding, and 2 surgeries while in the midst of it all. So, I'm getting used to complications.)

Rackchar, I'm sorry you are not having a easy time. I hope things get better with your heart, it's probably not a big deal it's amazing how strong our hearts are. I have kind of the same problem, i'm off of my Herceptin currently due to my heart lowering also. I won't know until Dec 29th what they are gonna do with me. Everything is gonna turn around for you soon and you'll be fine.

Hello everyone, Happy Holidays!!!  Sorry I haven't posted in a while....finals. I was stuyding so hard that I gave myself headaches every day. I have a whole month of doing absolutely nothing but relaxing. I hope everyone is doing well. I will see a heart specialist on Thursday and depending on what he says, I will be starting Herceptin next week. I'm not looking forward to it. I want to be done and finished with this already! I'm glad I put my foot down with my onc and cardiologist about getting an echo done after each treatment. I feel better knowing that I have a say in how I want my treatments handled. Anyway, you ladies stay blessed!!!

It's Jan 25, 2012, I was just Googling my MUGA at 56% and found this.  I too was off Herceptin for 6 months last year as my percentage was too at 46%.  However I am on 2 blood pressure meds now Ramipril and Metroprolol and they have done the trick.  56% and from 51% in September.  I am Stage IV, Metastatic Breast Cancer so I need the Herceptin for an unending time, and we have a Cardiologist in Winnipeg, MB who did a study of the heart problems caused by Herceptin and this is NORMAL procedure to have women take the 2 blood pressue meds and it seem to work very well.

So anyone who needs HEART help to stay on the Herceptin please ask you Dr's to GOOGLE Dr. Jasinder Jassal at St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg, MB or just google the 2 drugs and Herceptin

GOOD LUCK AND STAY STRONG EVERYONE.
