Eye Exams

Options

Hello everyone,

I'll be having my last taxo treatment on friday the 21st and fortunately for me no radiation.  Now all that's left is reconstruction.  Can anyone tell me how long after should I wait after my last chemo to get a new eye exam.  My eye sight was really affected by chemo and I can't see too well with my glasses.  Can anyone help of should I just call my ophthalmologist to find out.

Thanks

Hi MrsTG, I would think you could go whenever you felt up to it.  I think it would be good for them to see what this stuff can do to you.

    Good luck to you

Wow!  This topic is so interesting!  I just finished TC 6 weeks ago, and I have felt like my night driving has been affected -- seeing starburst patterns from oncoming lights, and just having a harder time seeing in the dark --  to the point where I'm reluctant to drive at night.  I've been assuming it was a chemo SE and hoping it would go away as my body rebuilds.  But, I haven't seen it discussed anywhere, so was very glad to see this new thread.  I would love to hear from  women who experienced vision changes post-chemo, to find out if they eventually went away, or if they've experienced permanent changes in their vision.   Deanna

    Well, that explains everything!

I didn't know chemo could affect your eyesight but now I know why I am having so much trouble seeing at night.  It seems to be getting worse though instead of better.  I finished chemo at the end of May.

Bumping this thread because I'd like to hear more personal experiences with post-chemo eyesight issues.    Deanna

When I went for an eye exam mid-chemo, the pressure in my eyes was greatly increased. The eye doctor put me on drops they use for glaucoma, and I took those for a few months. The pressure dropped quickly in both eyes so I stopped taking one drop, then the other, and now I'm fine. I think it was just a temporary thing related to chemo or Herceptin, or tamoxifen, who knows...

I think it might be related to the hormone changes when we get chemo.  When I was pg 25 years ago, my astigmatism changed b/c of hormones, and I couldn't wear my contacts anymore.  Then during chemo this last winter, my eyes actually got better.  Now rather than needing bi-focals I've worn for years, I only need one contact in one eye for distance.  I love the changes it did to mine. I did wait over 6 months for the opthal appt though, and when I saw her, that's what they said they recommend is 6 months wait.

Good Luck and hope it changed in a good way instead of for the worse.  Might be you need lesser script in them as opposed to more also!

I also noticed that I couldn't see as well with my glasses after chemo.  I actually waited about a year before I went to the eye doctor.  Like wishiwere, my eyesight actually improved and my glasses were too strong.  Best of luck to you.

Thanks everyone, now I know that I should wait a while before getting my eyes checked.
