Flax seed oil counterproductive???
Since my diagnosis in early April I've researching about healthy foods that could help reduce the risk of recurrence or just simply improve my health overall, I read about the Budwig Diet especially designed for cancer patients. The basic element of this diet is called the "spread" and it is a mixture of flax seed oil and cottage cheese, I began eating this mixture with much effort because of its taste and then...two weeks ago in a bc forum I saw that flax seed oil should be avoided by patients of bc if it was, as in my case, hormonal positive, because it boosted progesterone levels.
I've stopped taking it but can't help thinking about it. Anyone has any information about this, I'm worried...

Last week I spoke with my surgeon and she indicated that flax was ok and on soy.. "we really don't know enough about to say if it's good or bad"...my tumor was strongly ER/PR+. Bottom line here I think is that they just don't know. I go with my gut...I do what makes me feel healthy and strong. I think flaxseed is an excellent food. I stopped eating soy because of all the controversy but I'm not sure it makes any difference really.

I stopped in to Healthy Appetites, my local health food store and the man told me to take flax seed oil when I told him I had ER+ bc. He gave me a paper about it so I started taking it too. I'll see if I can find the paper and maybe you can google it.

I don't see that they've studied it a great deal. The paper I have had a couple of studies done in Israel, Italy and Australia.

My breast cancer nutritionist advised Flax could be used in moderation if that's something I wanted to do, which I really don't want to, but also said no soy.

I started eating ground flaxseed in may of last year before I ever read about the budwig protocol. As far as I know, the objection to flax (and soy) is the presence of phytoestrogens. Opinions are divided on this topic. Some say phytoestrogens could feed cancer cells the same way estrogen does. Others say the phytoestrogens are weaker and it is to our benefit to eat phytoestrogens because the plant esters combine with the receptors but are too weak to feed a tumor. But here's my gripe -- if the plant ester is too weak to feed a tumor, how can anyone be certain that it's the phytoestrogen and not real estrogen (or foreign xenoestrogens) connecting to the receptor?
It stands to reason that the stronger estrogens would just elbow the phytoestrogens to the side as they glom onto the receptors. I'm actually hoping that the opposite is true, however, since I've kicked tamoxifen to the curb and placed my hopes on the flaxseed being beneficial to me. Even if it doesn't keep the receptors occupied, there are a host of other benefits associated with flaxseed and its oil. I like mine mixed with yogurt and honey. I tried the cottage cheese route and really missed my yogurt. Hopefully, yogurt has whatever cottage cheese has for creating the chemical combination that's supposed to be so good.

Thank you all for your replies. I used the link for flaxhealth.com and found the information very interesting, I can't understand the lack of serious studies and research in this field, even when the taste of the flaxseed oil is not enjoyable (I'll try it with yogurt if I go back to it), it doesn't have any side effects and I'm having a really hard time with the Tamoxifen. I've been searching and found some information on alternative approaches to bc treatment in combination with conventional therapy:

I have also done some research on flax seed. I think there seems to be a difference in the flax seed oil and the ground flax seed. My understanding is the ground flax seed goes through the intestines and grabs the carcinogens and carries them out of the intestines. I don't recall the oil, bit it is totally different.
Unfortunately, in this country and probably others... it is about the almighty buck. There is minimal money to be made in flax seeds compared to pharmaceuticals. Therefore when a corporation is deciding what to do a "study" on which requires $, they look at the return.
Moral of the story is I appreciate both... but like to have a plan "B" so will continue to do my own research and trust that the right information will come to me.
You may have seen in other posts that I have a friend who is 10 years cancer free who did it totally holistic, after surgery. She does take ground flax seed.

ladies, love the input...Carol it is good to hear about your friend in remission 10 years...my sister is about 10 yrs now....she opted out of tamoxifen and takes flaxoil daily, she is not a big veggie/fruit eater....my problem is that I like all food.... and my sister has always been picky with food, but we both ended up with similar BC...mine non nodal and hers nodal...I couldn't handle tamoxifen side effects....I do take flax oil supplement and Co Q 10 and now Vit d...I need to get some reputable ground flaxseed...I have some bob's meal brand in the freezor, but it has been there for several months. I added mine to cereal...
Carol what does your friend take besides ground flaxseed?

It's really wonderful that your friend is doing fine 10 years post, that's the kind of news that provides hope and hope itself it's a lot already. I've been trying to find more information about the possible effect of flaxseed oil intake in the hormonal levels since my tumor was 100% ER+ and 100% PR+ but have found nothing on the subject, I don't want to ask my Onc I'm sure he's going to give "that look", for the time being I have increased the amount of fruits and veggies I eat (especially broccoli) and avoid processed food as much as I can, I'm sure what we eat makes us more resistant or vulnerable to the diseases...and of course I check regularly this Alternative & Holistic thread for guidance.

I had read that Flax Seed acted as an Aromatase Inhibitor, but there is a clinical trial now comparing it with Anastrazole. However, it's the ground seed, not the oil that contains the lignans that gives the benefit. I've been taking 2 tbsp on my cereal.

I get about 3 tablespoons of ground flax a day. I'm also taking a mushroom capsule, CoQ10 and a tumeric supplement. Fortuantely I was eating clean before my diagnosis so my eating habits didn't need to change.

This makes me crazy.
I switched to Soy Milk and stared 2 TBSP Flax seed in cereal b/c I thought it would benefit me. I am 90% ER and 90% PR. I found these below:
BC and soy.
From reading this below, it seems soy okay before menopause, and may have an estrogen "blocking" effect, but after menopause, it may act LIKE an estrogen. They are saying concentrated soy supplements should be avoided in POST menopausal women.

Soy can be really confusing. It can act as both agonist and antagonist for breast cancer. Then you have the processed soy and the fermented soy and the supplements. Ugh! Too complicated for this simple mind but that is why the research is confusing.
But even though soy and flax are both classified as a phytoestrogen, they are not the same. It's the lignans in the flax seed that they claim are the benefit.
There are so many websites out there promoting their own ideas of what we should be doing. It's hard, but we need to be careful of the information we gather and make sure we do our own research. The more we understand about our case the more tools we have to make life saving decisions.

good communication here....I agree about the flaxseed, Springtime were you eating the flax and soy before BC and for how long if you were....i started then stopped and now just started....but before BC I wasn't a regular partaker of it....
I asked my onc about flax right off the bat in July and he said flax is fine....good omega 3....and my onc is very interested in research....
I have found more good things over the web about flax and barely anything bad....Diana Dyer a registered dietician is a 3 time cancer survivor....she has been in remission for some time now and eats ground flax daily...also real whole soy products...she decided after getting BC the last time that she would research and tackle the chance of recurrence with diet....she doesn't eat meat or chicken....eats lots of veges and fruits, fatty fish,adds whole soy and flax. she has a great website.
It would be nice for us to have a thread where we could share our journey with diet and supplements. There really isn't much info out there for us on a personal basis...Susan Weed and Diana Dyer are one of the few I know who have websites.

I was not eating ground Flax until after BC. I eat 2 TBSP a day with my cereal, (with blueberries!) and swithed from cow's milk to Soy milk b/c I thought it would be better for someone ER+ and PR+. But I feel like I need more help. After surgery (Dec 2nd) and recovery, I want to start focusing on foods.
I'd join your thread if you start one!.... I will have to look up Diana Dyer.

I avoid soy for the following reason: though I get the same "no one knows for sure" response from whomever I ask, I used A LOT of soy based foods/drinks while I was in peri-menopause to help with hot flashes. I loved soy milk, used a lot of tofu, and put soy powder in a daily blender drink. Then suddenly I found the lump, which was estrogen positive. I freaked at the thought that I had been "feeding" this tumor for years with all the soy intake. So I decided to go the no-soy route. (BTW Dr. Andrew Weill, on his site, pushes soy products for all women to avoid breast cancer, but he never distinquishes between pre and post menopausal women...which I think is a big mistake!)Then I discovered that ground flax seed as an anti-oxident. So I started grinding my own seeds (it's simple to do this in a small coffee grinder and keep the ground seeds in a container in the fridge) and putting them on cereal, etc. THEN I heard they may be bad for breast cancer women! My doctors do not seem to have any better idea than I do on this issue. So it is crazy making. This confusion has led me to finding this wonderful blog.I'm leaning towards continuing with the flax seed, though I have a feeling 2 tablespoons a day may be a bit high. I had a friend who had a bad reaction (can't recall what it was...my chemo-brain is still in effect) from high doses of ground flax seed. I am no closer to understanding the Soy/No Soy and Flaxseed thing EITHER!! I am just taking soy milk with cereal and coffee in the am (I still had my period up until chemo, I'm 50, but chemo ended 6 weeks ago and no period yet, so maybe I am done, and then should not be doing the Soy??) ahhhck!
I am doing now 1TBSP of ground Flaxseed in cereal. I need to have rads so was told not to do any antioxidents like Fish Oil for now.

The whole soy and flax thing is confusing. I asked my onc and he said there hasn't been enough studies to show it is bad or good. He said it would be my desicion. I decided not to. I was never a big soy eater, before BC I did like my chocolate soy milk and occasionally I would throw tofu in a stirfry just for something different. I thought I would miss it, but no. I switched to Almond milk and love it. I think it tastes better than soy milk and a lot less fat than regular milk. It comes in vanilla, chocolate or regular.
I decided to go to a natural path a month ago and she recommended no soy products untill research has come out. Argg..but thats ok. she did recommend Omega 3 Fish oil tablet 1 a day and Co Enzime Q10 2 a day for the prevention of recurrence. Along with the Calcium, Vitamin D, Multi vitamin ect. I'm glad I went to see her now that I'm finished with the conventional "stuff". Spring, blueberries are so very good for you I eat them at least 3 x week. They are more expensive now that they are not in season but I buy them frozen and throw them in oatmeal or baking. Also dark, dark chocolate the higher the percentage the better. Dark chocolate has the highest antioxidant content its great for baking!

We are having like a sybotoic thought process tonight! I have also thought about the CoEnzime Q10. Is that considered an anti-oxident? (My onc wants me to avoid anti oxidents like fish oil until after rads, and she didn't let me take it during chemo!)
Almond milk though!!!! That sounds delicious. Can you get that at a regular grocery store?
I am also going to make an appt with a dietician at the cancer center and also a woman who has a "well-being" center, and see what they say about BC (ER+PR+) and Flaxseed and Soy products. I feel like it is either too controversial or there is not enough known, and I really need to make a decision one way or the other!!!

LOL...I'm not sure if it an antioxidant or not. But my rad onc also suggested not to take anything during rads.To be honest with you I took nothing, not even a multi vitamin through out all my treatment (chemo, sx rads ). I started the vitamins about a month afterwards just to be on the safe side. And yes the Almond milk I buy at a regular grocery store.
