swollen abdomen
My mom's abdomen is so swollen and she is having pains in her stomach area also. Her legs and arms are swollen also. Could this be a sign of liver failure? I'm really worrying about her. She is so huge in her stomach area.

It is a possiblity of liver failure, have you called the onc? If she is that swollen I think I would head to the ER because there is a risk of congestive heart failure. Sorry, wish I could offer a better option.
-
I agree!! My mom had the same problems right before her liver failed.
You are both in my prayers.

My mom looks so good other then this, I wonder how much longer she has. All of this just started about a week ago. I don't know what I'll do without her.
-
Right now you need to concentrate on her being with you and it sounds like your mom's doctor needs to know what is going on.
-
He knows, but he doesn't say much. The nurse told me she thought my mom's liver is diseased . I wish they would do some blood work and see how her liver is doing. But maybe they have and just aren't telling us anything. We will see him again tomorrow she has to go in for more blood work to see how she is doing with the blood clot to her left arm. I'm just so worried.

I think what your Mom is experiencing is call ascites. They can drain the fluid from her stomach and make her comfortable. Talk to them about doing this procedure and the benefits to her. God is able, stephanie

Michelle-

We went back to the doctor today out of the blue the doctor and nurse and someone from hospice came over to talk to us . I wasn't looking for them to do this today so it was sort of a surprise, they asked my mom if she wanted to stop all treatments and just do hospice now. My mom still doesn't want to give up and I don't want her to either. She looks so good, but the doctor said we have tried a lot of chemo's and they aren't working anymore. I didn't think we really had tried a whole lot but maybe we have. I'm so upset, but some how today I didn't break down when they were talking to us I held up real good of course I'm trying to be strong now but I have had a few break downs I just don't want my mom to see me upset. She is real upset tonight also. I'll try and talk more later! Thank you all for everything. You all mean so much to me. Take Care! Michelle

I am so sry ejohn. I am trying to think of something to say, but all I can say is sorry sorry sorry and I will pray for your mom and your family and if your mom wants to continue treatment and the Dr's will, then do it, it is all about her wishes. I know it may sound inconsiderate to say, as I know we want quantity of life, but quality of life should also be considered. Please dont take that as being inconsiderate and incompassionate.
God Bless your Mom and your family

Do you have the list of all the chemos that are currently available for bc mets? If not let me know and I will post it, just in case there is something there that may work. If your mom is not ready for hospice maybe double check with another onc if they think it is time for hospice. Nothing like a fresh opinion when one person seems out of options.

I am so sorry that her previous treatments have not worked. There comes a time when a doctor feels he/she would do more harm than good by continuing treatment. Obviously your Mom has reached that point in her Oncologist's mind. If your Mom wants to try more treatments, perhaps a second opinion is in order. Or a clinical trial? If not, maybe you and your Mom could find comfort in knowing that Hospice will help give her quality of whatever time she does have left.
Again, I am so sad for both of you. My daughter and I will be facing this in the not too distant future.
hugs,
Carol

Michelle, I am so sorry you are going through such a difficult time, and also sorry that your mother is suffering. I dread getting to that point in making the decision of whether or not to continue treatment. I pray that you can find peace and comfort in whatever your mother decides.
Take care,Love,
Amber

ejohn,
My mother went through this last year. Her stomach was swelling and she had to keep having it drained. The doctor told her the chemo was not working. She decided to finish the last 2 rounds of chemo. She only had 1 more though because the chemo was doing more harm so she said that was it. The draining took it's toll as well. Everytime they drain, it takes out nutrients and leaves the person weak. At that point, hospice came in and was a great help. They made sure she was comfortable and pain free. I know it's hard. I think though you will feel so much more relieved when hospice comes in. They will help you with everything. Things that you can't think about in the state you and your family are in at this time.

Is your mom's doctor willing to do one more CT? Even when we knew things were going down hill my mom's onc did one last scan to make sure she did not have some kind of blockage before he told her there was no more he could do. When the liver starts to go - IF there really is nothing more that can be done - things tend to go fast. I pray, pray, pray, this is not the case for your mom. My heart is breaking for you right now. It doesn't matter when the time comes today or in 20 years this whole thing SUCKS! No mater what, just spend time with your mom, love her and be with her.
Hugs,
Liz

My mother was having the same symptoms recently. Her abdomen area was so swollen it looked like she was 8 months pregnant. Her oncologist was aware of this and told her the liver was enlarged. He ordered a CT scan but everything turned out ok. Then about two weeks ago she was having severe pains. Her oncologist admitted her to the hospital and ran some more test. It came back that her Gall bladder was not working correctly. She had to have her gall bladder removed. As the surgeon removed the gallbladder he did a biospy of the liver. We found out last week the cancer has spread to her liver. She is stage IV w/ bone mets. She was already on Avastin and Xeloda. She started her new round of chemo today which is doxil and avastin. I would strongly suggest that you push the issue with her doctors. You could not tell from my moms blood work anything was wrong. Her liver enzymes were all within normal range. She needs to have a MRI on the abdomen area. Do not take no for an answer. Doctors know more than they let on. They will only tell you what they think you need to know.

Prayers for you mom and for you.

Here's recent post from Michelle on Oct 20th on another thread:
Well, my mom is still hanging in here. I'm getting more concern though, her stomach is so swollen and the liver area is real hard and you can tell it's swollen also. She's one tough lady though, she went to Walmart with us on Saturday and to church yesterday with us. She doesn't want to give up and I don't want her to either. I know it can't be good though all the swelling. Her arms and legs stay swollen also. Her legs go down during the night but as soon as she is up just for a few minutes the swelling comes back. At least for now she doesn't seem to have too much pain, I'm glad for that, I mean she does have some, but not as bad as she was having a few weeks ago. she is still taking the Xeloda, but is on a low dose right now. Only takes 500mg twice a day she didn't have any side effects with that dose. This is her week off, the doctor said he might increase her dose some. From the way her liver looks now I don't see that the drug is doing any good, unless this is too early to tell? I pray it will help shrink the tumors in her liver. I'll try and keep in touch. Take Care! Michelle

Thanks for the update, my grandma is going through the same thing right now. She went to the Dr on Tuesday and they took her off her twice a day 500 mg of Xeloda, and is planning to run some test on her liver and do a stool test to see if there is any blood in it. She has swelling in her face and her eyes are puffy, and her stomach is swollen but it has been that way for a few months now. She told the Dr on Tuesday she wanted to be put into the hospital but they wouldnt and said they would just see her back in 2 weeks. When I go over to see her she is just sitting there with her head hung over. You can tell she is not feeling well. Also on Saturday she did start throwing up some and has diarhea for about a week now. Maybe being off the Xeloda will stop that, but she is also on Tykerb which causes those symptoms as well.
I wish the best for your mom and will keep her in my prayers
