A few weeks ago, I purchased this at Costco and I just love it. I had been thinking about juicing more but then you don't get the fiber and juice is loaded with calories. I have a Cuisanart but even though it's supposed to be a great blender, I can't make a decent smoothie!!

Yes, it was expensive. But so is going to Lindora which was my other option!!!!

I have made the best whole food soups from this and just love it. Smoothies are so easy.  It has a 2hp motor so you can put in the seeds of grapes, bellpepper, etc and instead of going right "thru" you, undigested, you get all the anti-oxidant value from them which is usually exponentially greater than the fruit itself.

I made ice cream in 20 sec with carrots, cabbage, yellow squash, concentrated orange juice and ice!  My daughter, who would not eat any of the veggies, loves it and loves the fact that these "yucky" veggies are in it. She has me make it when her friends come over.

Has anybody else purchased one of these?

    Hi Kelly!

I just may have to check this out next time I'm at Costco (GAWD...I love that place). It's great that Teryn likes it too!

I love my Vita Mix, especially for soups and smoothies.

I too purchased it at Costco, and it was much less than purchasing it directly on-line.

All leftover veggies get thrown in with some skim milk and/or fat free chicken or veggie broth, fat free feta and some spices, and the soup is fabulous and quick--heat right in the machine.

    Enjoy!

I'm so glad someone else likes their VitaMix. I was thinking it was too much of a splurge but yesterday I made soup again.

This time I threw left over meat sauce (didn't feel like making making rigatoni again) and non-fat milk, red bell pepper, cabbage, squash, adobo seasonings, green onion and celery and vroooooooom!!

I bought more tomatos and Rotel tomatoes so I can keep up the soup "diet" ...

We've had our Vitamix for 5 years and LOVE it.  We've made baby food, hot soups, smoothies, peanut butter (and other nut butters) ... it's awesome!

We've let it gather too much dust lately (just using it for peanut butter) ... so thanks for the reminder of how useful it is for eating healthy!

Don't I have to buy the "dry" blade to make peanut butter??

I had posted about using a Vita Mix in another section of the forum, but no replies. I have one too and cannot rave enough about it!!! I LOVE it, and I know our fruit/veggie intake has increased since the Vita Mix came into our home. Worth every penny!!! When people balk at the expense of it.....I tell them that I use it every day....at least once a day, often more than that....I also use my dishwasher every day, but noone would ever balk at the thought of the price of a dishwasher?!!??! My Vita Mix allows us to reach the goal of a more healthy type of life style and eating habits, and if you use it every day, why not? I guess it seems outrageous (the price) for a 'blender', but anyone who has one knows they do so much more than what your average blender can do. I want to try the ice cream you mentioned with the veggies in it! Sounds great!!! Any way I can sneak in more of the veggies (especially) for my kids and hubby I will!

Roctomom, the regular blade works fine for peanut butter and almond butter--I have not tried any other nut butters.

With the almond butter, you usually have to add some canola oil because the almonds are quite dry--the book that comes with it explains how to do it, because I understand if you go too fast in the beginning you can harm the motor--there are a couple recipes in the book that comes with the machine for the nut butters--kids love them, and they have no sugar, no hydrogenated oils like the butters you buy, and they taste like fresh nuts spread on toast!!

    Jane

Can you give me the recipe for nut butters? I did not get a book with my Vita Mix (it was used). I tried to make it but I felt I was adding way too much oil. Where do you buy the nuts and do you do so in large quantities??? I need to perfect the nut butters!

    Thanks!!!!!

Annie--I buy the raw nuts from Costco--he he he--I am a Costco Addict!!

    Here you go:

    Peanut/Cashew Butter

    Speed:  Variable to High

    Time: One Minute (See Caution)

    Yield:  1 1/4 cup

Variation:  Almond Butter Substitute Roasted Almonds.  Add 1/2 cup canola oil if necessary.  Refrigerate and pour off excess oil next day.

Pour nuts into Vita-Mix container.  Secure 2 part lid.  Select Variable speed #1.  Insert tamper through lid opening.  Turn on machine and quickly increase speed to #10; then to High.  Use the tamper to push the nuts into the blades.  In 1 minute you will hear a high pitch chugging sound.  Once the butter begins to flow freely through the blades the motor sound will change from a high pitch to a low laboring sound.  Stop and pour into container.

CAUTION:  Over processing will cause serious overheating to your machine.  Do not process for more than one minutes after mixture starts circulating freely.

If it seems too dry or working too hard, I add the oil to help mix it up.

The book "Whole Food Recipes for Better Living" by VitaMix is fabulous--great soup recipes and many others.  Unfortunately, it is $50.00.

You can get many great recipes on their website at http://vitamix.ahoy.com/recipe/recipe_search.cgi

My favorite soup receipe--I usually roast lots of mixed veggies and have leftovers and use them for this.  I use the low fat feta for the fat free aspect:

    Veggie  Cheese Soup

1 cup (240 mL) skim or lowfat milk, steaming (or chicken/veggie broth)
1/3 cup (80 mL) lowfat Cheddar cheese  (or fat free feta)
1 cup (240 mL) broccoli or cauliflower, steamed (or any mixed veggies)
    1/4 cup (60 mL) onion
1 teaspoon cornstarch (I usually skip--extra veggies thicken it)
1/4 teaspoon chicken or vegetable bouillon or soup base

Place all ingredients in Vita-Mix container in order listed. Secure 2-part lid. Select VARIABLE, speed #1. Turn on machine and quickly increase speed to #10; then to HIGH. Run for 2 to 3 minutes or until smooth. Serve immediately.

Annie, you can write to VitaMix or go on their website and I think you can buy the recipe book.  Maybe go on ebay and get it cheaper. Who knows, you might get it free from VitaMix.  I know VitaMix has some of their recipes on line.

Thanks! I visit the Vita Mix site often for recipes....and I belong to a Vita Mix group too by email. Lots of great tips that way. May be a dumb question....but raw nuts??? Is that just the regular bulk peanuts (not dry roasted)? No Costco here or I bet I would be shopping there too! Smile

Look on eBay! Or Craig's list...you never know what you will find. I was a little nervous about buying such a high ticket item on eBay....and I had NO idea how GREAT Vita Mix blenders were....now I KNOW!!!!! You can't beat the health benefits, it is definitely one way to boost up your veggie and fruit intake (and fiber) all of which are good for you! Oh I ***heard*** you can get a new or reconditioned one through Vita Mix if you have a letter from your dr. stating your need for one for health reasons? The price was amazing...it might worth a phone call! All I know is the company is GREAT to work with, EXCELLENT customer service...NO, I don't work for them Embarassed, I am just THAT happy of a customer!!!! Highly recommend....maybe put it on your Christmas wish list!!!! You are worth it Smile!

One more thing... in reply to Annie06.  The re-furbished machines are on sale for $379 (as of February 14, 2009).  Don't know when this sale will end (they are usually $399).

Refurbs come with the same  7-year warranty as a new machine!

Mine is a refurb.  I bought my Mom and Dad a refurb, and I bought my neighbor (who has pancreatic cancer) a refurb.

I can tell you how to get free shipping too!

    Blessings,

I love my vitamix, so far i'm making green smoothies and i tried strawberry ice last night, great!

One place i read you cook the rice before making rice milk..it it cooked or raw to make rice milk?

Although my naturapath I think said no to rice milk, I plan to make almond milk. I found bags also at ace hardware..cheaper than victoria boutenko's site... http://www.rawfamily.com/  My naturapath likes he.

I had green smoothies 2 weeks and cholesterol went down 20 points and now that i add raw garlic clove, my blood sugar is in good range again, 120 or 140 to 98...most of the time.

I was reading about garlic in "food is your best medicine"

I wasn't sure if I could join this site I have not had breast cancer but it's very high in my family.   3 maternal aunts, 6 cousins from those aunts.

I'm glad to hear you all like your Vita Mix sorry you have went so long without it.   I have had mine for 30 years.   I have a 24 year old grandson who never ate baby food all his food was blended in the Vita Mix.   This child has not been to the doctor for anything.   He is very healthy.   Only problem we moved to OK in 2004 and he followed in 2007 and is having allergy attacks because of OK high polen.   I wish I would have known other people were wanting them because I couldn't get rid of my old one I tried and tried to give it to about 6 different people.   My daugher has it but hasn't used it at all.   I almost threw it in trash.   It is in great shape just out of style.   I must admit that I hadn't used mine in about 4 or 5 years when we went to Tulsa State Fair and saw the demonstration my husband said we ought to start using that again.   Then he talked with Demonstrator and she said send old one back for $75 refund but I messed around and missed the deadline.   I became a vegetarian in April 2008 because of diabetes and immediately my blood sugar improved but need something for cholesterol because for some reason since going vegan it keeps rising.   I drink no dairy, eat no meat, so I think my body is working overtime producing it.   I posted to a Vita Mix and I'm unhappy with response so saw this site and love what I have read so far.

    I love my VitaMix---

I just finished 6 rounds of TAC--I purchased it after treatment #2.

I had low white counts down to 1.8 right after round #3--and got very ill--

I got out the VitaMix and started blending whole fruits such as Pears, Apples and Yogurt--or Green drinks such as Kale, Broccoli and apples---just 3 days after massive juicing with the VitaMix my counts shot up to over 14.0!!!!

I told my Doctor---it must be the VitaMix---it was the only thing that I was doing different---

I continue to make myself one Green drink a day--1/2 an apple and Kale---

I use all organic produce and veggies of course---

    Thanks---

when you use kale, is there any special prep? or do you just throw it in w/ 1/2 apple and zap it? I do a lot w/fruit but have not blended veggies/greens in my vita-mix. Usually juice the veggies, but lately I want the fiber.

Blending your foods is better --- you keep the fiber which helps to keep your sugars from spiking so high. It balances better. And really, we need a lot of fiber to keep our bodies clean.

    Here's some info from medicine.net

You may also hear fiber referred to as bulk or roughage. Call it what you want, but always remember that fiber is an essential part of everyone's diet. While fiber does fall under the category of carbohydrates, in comparison, it does not provide the same number of calories, nor is it processed the way that other sources of carbohydrates are.

This difference can be seen among the two categories that fiber is divided into: soluble and insoluble.

    • Soluble fiber dissolves in water to form a gel-like substance. Sources of soluble fiber are oats, legumes (beans, peas, and soybeans), apples, bananas, berries, barely, some vegetables, and psylluim.
    • Insoluble fiber increases the movement of material through your digestive tract and increases your stool bulk. Sources of insoluble fiber are whole wheat foods, bran, nuts, seeds, and the skin of some fruits and vegetables

One of the reasons that fiber may have an impact on body weight is its ability to slow the movement of food through the intestines. The gel-like substance that soluble fibers form when they dissolve in water causes things to swell and move slower in the intestines. This increase in time that foods stay in the intestines has been shown to reduce hunger feelings and overall food intake. It has also been shown to decrease the number of calories that are actually absorbed from the ingested food.

Soluble fiber has been found to produce significant reductions in blood sugar in 33 of 50 studies testing it. In clinical intervention trials ranging from two to 17 weeks, consumption of fiber was shown to decrease insulin requirements in people with type 2 diabetes. If you have ever had to inject yourself with insulin, you can appreciate how much easier and less painful it would be to increase your fiber intake to avoid the need for insulin injections.
