stupid question
Just thought I'd ask if anyone else has experienced this.
I went for a thallium stress test today - they started an IV and injected saline - I know this sounds stupid but I could taste it in the back of my throat and now I have a really sore throat.
When I was finished with chemo and had to have my port flushed every 4 weeks the same thing used to happen. I had the port removed in March.
Has anyone else ever had this?? I feel stupid because it doesn't make sense that I would taste something injected in my vein.
Any response would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bridget

Not the same thing, but I swear I can taste it when I get contrast for MRIs. Weirdest feeling.

Bridget - I think that "tasting" the saline is completely normal. I have been having a lot of CT scans this year to watch an area on my ribs, and I always taste it in the back of my throat when they start the contrast port. I haven't gotten a sore throat from it though.

Thank you so much for the replies.
It means alot to know I'm not insane (at least in this case).
I felt stupid asking - but figured I was safe here. It's a relief to hear that others have had the same thing - it is such a weird feeling.
Thanks,
Bridget

The only silly questions are the ones never asked!
I hated being injected--I'm pretty much a trooper, but I swear, the pain of that liquid was enough stress for me, let alone what it was supposed to do!

I just had the same sttress test....I had no reaction whatsoever to the saline....

It absolutely makes sense. It used to happen to me all the time during chemo, and still happens any time I have an IV started.
I asked about it once, and they said it has to do with the direction the blood flows in your mouth.
Thats why they say you should suck ice chips during Adriamycin-to reduce the nasty tase in your mouth.

Every time I have an MRI, I can taste the contrast in my mouth. It is the weirdest feeling, because the injection is done remotely, so I only know when it happens because of the taste in my mouth - I don't really feel it going into my arm.

I used to notice this whenever I got a general anesthetic. They'd start the line and have me start counting backwards and instead I'd mention the funny taste in my mouth. I'd always mention it in case it was a bad reaction and they needed to know before I went under.

Yes, I had that taste when they would flush my port. The onc nurses would tell me to suck on candy or sniff a tea bag while they were flushing and that helped. However, now I can't drink certain teas because the smell gags me.
