Hello to all!
Good to hear from so many................Nancy....I see one of your 'neighbors' has joined us! DCJoslin.......welcome to our MI group..............of course, we are always sorry to have to welcome newcomers but glad that we can be here for others!
Faith........those babbeez are adorable and getting so big! They grow so fast.......my 'new' grandson is already 9 months old! Geez girl, When I told you not to come to MI while I was in AZ I didn't mean for you to make it the next day (when we get home!) You guys try to get together..........but, let me know how long before you trek back South on 23....................I'm sure I can't make the 13th, but maybe we can do a quick meet up (is that a word?) on your way back!
(by the way..........my DD has a website set up on etsy.com where she is selling her baby bibs she makes..) OOPS....that must have slipped out of my mouth!
I hate to mention the 'C' word.................(Christmas )...........already, but do you all want to plan something for the first part of December???? Informal poll.........lets see who is interested and then put something together!
Hugs,
Neesie..........AKA...........nEEsie

Welcome to our new girls Gail, dcjoslin56, Stronger27
Wishiwere - Visit with us anytime nice seeing you here.
Stronger 27 - You are so young to be joining our club. I too had low grade DCIS that was widespread. My best advice to you is to get several opinions with a breast cancer specialist. I had 3 out of 4 Drs. recommend mastectomy over lumpectomy. For me I felt a mastectomy was a drastic move for DCIS. I went with the breast cancer surgeon who preformed lumpectomy. I had to go back for a second lumpectomy to get clear margins then 6 weeks of radiation followed by Tamoxifen (which I declined to take). With you working at a hospital I'm sure you are getting all kinds of advice. Go with your gut and what you feel is best for you. I have no regrets with my lumpectomy decision for DCIS.
Faith - The bucket babies are adorable, my they are growing. Another lunch date sounds like fun. Ann Arbor was our last hook up. Let us know what route you are taking then maybe we can come up with a plan.
JudyRock - How's work going is it any easier for you?
Neesie - I liked the plug for the bibs.....too cute. December luncheon - weather permitting and location......count me in.
Hugs to all the girls here on the MI site.

Dear Stronger 27,
I'm sorry about your diagnosis of DCIS but consider it the golden ticket of breast cancers. One recommendation I would make to you is to request a breast MRI. I had DCIS back in 2005, had a lumpectomy and radiation. My doctors kept a very close watch on me however this past June I was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma. A very small spot showed up on the mammogram but when they took the MRI it looked like a storm had erupted on doppler radar. It is very likely that this was brewing in 2005 when I had the DCIS diagnosis. They didn't do an MRI then but if they had I'd be in better shape today.
I'm going for my 7th of 8 chemo treatments next week. Then I am facing a double mastectomy next month, followed by radiation and then hormone treatment.
I'm not trying to scare you but I wish I would have known about MRI and also about this sneaky breast cancer like invasive lobular carcinoma. One of my doctors told me it is very hard to detect until it has become quite advanced.
Good luck to you I know it is very scary but it is good your seeking second opinions. I am going to U of M but I have heard Karmanos is very good.
-
Dear JanDun1
I didn't realize that it was so common that you could have two different breast cancers at once.
I had lobular very large tumor in 1999 and had a mastectomy on the left. 2007 recurrence on the scar tissue and at the same time DCIS in the right breast. So I chose to have a mastectomy on the right also.

Hi - All
Faith - OK, I LOVE THE BUCKET BABIES TOO.
Did anyone hear from wishiwere where she ended up getting her fitting? I actually asked DD if she would like to go for a bra fitting for college = she is two different sizes, and walks hunched over in baggy sweaters. We went to the Women's Health Boutique - the fitter was so gentle with her, it was amazing. She walks tall, and feels supported for the first time in her life.
She also has had her first exams in her college courses - we may have some problems with her English teacher - she's supposed to have some accomodation because of her learning disabilities, and I don't think she got any. It's really hard - she's gifted, so when seems like she is just a little lazy, actually, if she works REALLY hard to spell like an ordinary kid. She still reverses some letters, but has had a couple of short stories published. I hate feeling like a helicopter parent, but somebody has to be on her side.
Judy - I'm glad you're back at work, but I am hoping you can take care of yourself physically.
As for me, as I think I told y'all, I had lost 40 lbs in the 8 months before our picnic. But then my weight loss plateaued - first, when I was working out hard, then when I got shingles, it continued. I am pretty proud of myself, because I didn't give up and didn't gain any back. Over the last 3 weeks, I've started losing again - 5 lbs! We'll see what happens.
Oh yeah, I did say shingles - I didn't realize how mushy my immune system was. I thought I'd pulled a muscle along my rib for like a week and a half, then the rash started. If you think you are getting this, the anti-viral meds work really well, if you start them early. So if you get a rash on your tummy, especially if it's combined with pain around half your body, get thee to your doctor.
Neesie - December sounds good to me.Hopefully, I'll be another size or so down by then.
-
Hi Sassie,
Did you also have to have chemo with the recurrence? My DCIS was on the right and then the lobular is on the left. I've been seriously considering double mastectomy. How are you doing with everything now? I'd like some insight from someone who has had a double mastectomy if you care to share.

Hello, I'm looking for an surviviors here in the UP of MIchigan, I live in L'Anse. Which is about 70 miles NW of Marquette and about 35 miles S of Houghton/ Hancock. Look forward to hearing from you. Excellent site and exellent sisters!Thank you all for being here......
Cheryl
-
Welcome Sherri. I think there is someone from up there, but the only persons I know personally from the U.P currently is about 1/2 my family in hancock. My little sister and 8 of her kids!
She just joined the Army Women as one who's never had (and I pray never does) BC though!
Have you checked local BC support groups through your breast care clinic? Hm...might not be one close though...Is Marquette the closest major hospital?
-
Morning, Yes there are alot of surviviors here, I was just seeing there were are on this site. These are great sites, I've been telling friends about it. Marquette & Portage Hospitals (hancock) are the main hospital's, I'm having my Chemo done at Portage everyother Thursday. Had 2nd treatment yesterday. ( A C - T). Thank you for writing & have a great day!
Cheryl
-
How have you done with them? Okay? It's never EASY, but doable as many say....just different levels of expectations and of responses to the stuff. Hope your SE's are minor. Do either of those hospitals do the recon you are looking for? I'm torn, b/c Midland doesn't do anything but the implants and I know I didn't want to do, still not sure IF I will eventually!
-
If I decide to have the reconstructive done I will go back to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where I had my surgery done. Yes I know it's a distance, but well worth it to me. So far my SE are mild, lol today that is. Went and had my shot at 1:00 so we'll see what tomorrow holds. Either way I know I'll feel better by next Thursday............... Just about time to go watch our son's last football game of the season. Have a good evening all.......
-
Cheryl, glad the Se's are mild today, hope it keeps up. Are you getting just the A/C now and the T later? What shot do you get? I only got the steriod with the infusion and never had the take at home steriods or the nulasta some get. Just curious. Hope it continues to be mild for you all weekend!
-
Dear JanDun:
I sent a PM to your box. Sorry I didn't respond sooner I have had a garage sale going on for the last 2 days.
Sassie
-
Wishiwere, Yes I'm doing the A/c now and T later, 4 of each and then I get the Neulasta the day after on Friday's. Today is my blah day just feel like sleeping, but this site and all of you make me get my body moving. thank you and it will be a good weekend...........
-
Hey Northern friends!! My trip thru your fair state is quickly approaching.
I'll be headed north on 23 a week from Thurs on the 13th. Will be looking for lunch-mates in and or around Ypsi/Ann Arbor area. Anybody with some available time?
lunch and a hug...........
edited to say thanks, for the shared giggles over our "bucket babies"
-
Hi faithandfifty...I would love to meet with you all again - it has been too long. I don't get off work until 2...Hugs to you!
-
susieloutoo!! i was gonna facebook you, but here you are in the flesh. LOL.
haven't heard from anyone yet...... as to time. will see what others are up to. maybe you could at least stop by for some dessert -- after work?
I'd love to see your pics (in person) from the 3 day. and hug you in appreciation, in person.
stay turned.
i'm thru airport security right this minute -- going to Dallas. don't think i'll pay for web every day, so will wait to see what unfolds.
-
Sorry that I can't do lunch, faith, but...
You may have heard that we just passed a medical marijuana law here in Michigan, so I'm trusting that we will be seeing bunches of sisters in chemo visiting to use our cheap Emend!
-
Yes, I'm thinking perhaps I've found a way to pay my property taxes...Grow a cheap cash crop, where I can sell or give it away for what it costs and make it even cheaper than the duggist can
Imagine the possibilities....Not only will my body be glowing from nuclear scans, but my basement from 24/7 flourescent lighting!
Although I'm sure there'll be some major changes in the cost to produce it what with the government now involved....hmmmm...maybe it won't be that feasible hey?
-
You all are to funny! I'm out here by the Mexican Border............maybe I can help with your 'side business'..!!
We're in AZ visiting My Son and DIL and having a great time...............We've been from one side of the state to the other.......even went 'caving'................Beautiful!!
Faith............can't do the 13th, as we're not coming home until LATE on the 12th...............How long are you going to be in the Wolverine State??
Wishing all well...................I'll try to check in before we leave here!
Neesie
-
Faith - Sorry I will not be able to meet up on Thursday.
What day are you traveling home?
Are you familiar with Dundee/Cablea's exit off of 23 before Ann Arbor? There are a few restaurants in that area also if anyone is interested. A little closer for me but not sure about the distance for the other girls.
Neesie - Glad you are having a great time in AZ. You in a cave......holy batman....haha
Cheryl - Hope your feeling better from your treatments.
JudyRock - How are things at work going? Hope it is getting easier for you.
Wishiwere & ICanDoThis - Government involved in the marijuana law......scary thought.
Hope all is well with the rest of the MI gang.

Hey gals. Getting packed to head north in the morning. Doesn't sound like it will work for lunch this trip -- all of you are busy and nEEsie's in a cave or something!
I'm just driving up tomorrow and back home on Fri. I am coming north again next month. My next trip will bring me up/north on Route 23 on Wed. Dec the 3rd. Is that any better for anybody?
Maybe nEEsie will have found her way outta da cave by then? BTW: is that code for something off color? You know how innocent I am.
I'll be waving at everybody as I drive thru...............
Thanks for attempting.

Hi to all and LOL to Faith......(Cave being 'code' for something!) I think it is 'code' for being crazy! Actually, we went 'caving' in AZ..........it is untouched and just opened up for tours a few years ago.........BEAUTIFUL......I was so hoping they might leave me behind and I could hide out for a few days..............................or until the 'bats' came out!!
Sorry lunch fizzled out.............we'll talk about the 3rd.........................Coming from a little old lady who doesn't live in a shoe....but doesn't do much...................quirky how you keep coming to town on the ONLY days I do something!! We'll talk before then!
Hope all are doing okay!
Neesie
-

Cheryl, Hello I am in Gladstone and I totally agree the U.P. is the only place to live.
-
Hi all...have been out of touch for a few weeks. Niece (raised as a daughter) got married in London 10 days ago...that makes 2 off the payroll and 1 more scheduled for February. Yep...3 girls in 1 year.
Anyway, I am up for lunch if we want to get together. A few years ago we met at Canterbury Village and that was very Christmasy. Or perhaps we should wait until January???
Sorry I missed the AA lunch yesterday. For those in tx...hope it is going ok. -
Dear MI Survivors:
I would like to be included in your list of MI Survivors. I live in Shelby Twp. and would like to network with other women in MI.
I also want to network with anyone who has had a Gap or Diep from NOLA.
Please include me in your list.
Sassie

Welcome Sassy.
AND WOW Not-Me! 3 in one year is just insane! How are you holding up? WHew! I have one just starting to discuss marriage and I'm fretting and excited and just overwhelmed with all that has to be undertaken! Kudos for getting 3 done in one year!
