Alternative sum up please!!

Options

I don't have time nor the energy to start digging into Alternative, Complementary & Holistic Treatments right now. You can all see my dx in my sig. line, any suggestions on what might be good in MY situation? Scheduled for lumpectomy on Friday 10/24, yep, 3 days! It all moved so fast since dx, tried to get as much info as I can but haven't really researched this yet and with 2 little ones it's a little difficult to find time to do it all (especially when you homeschool!!). Thank you, I appreciate everyone input on this issue. Hubby & I are big on alternative solution, don't like doctors & medications, now THIS!!

Hi Caroline.  I wish I could give you information, but I am, too, in the process of searching.  I have come across alot of web sites if you or your husband or friend googles alternative medicine and cancer.  It is, as you say, like having another job.  I have begun to read What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Breast Cancer.  I have also begun reading A women's guide to self healing from breast cancer: traditional Chinese medicine by Nan Lu.  These are both very good, but take time.  I am now on Arimidex and am having a very hard time with it (you'll see my diagnosis in signature).  I have just read some interesting information on natural progesterone as a natural aromatase inhibitor.  Has anyone else heard about this?  There is also alot of information on Iscar or mistletoe on the National Cancer Institute web site.  I don't know if any of this helps, but good luck and if I can possibly narrow anything down as far as resources go I'll email.

    Hi Caroline

I take a range of alternative medicine and so far so good, I think that these meds have helped my immune system hold off my cancer.

I take: Melatonin (20mg) at night this is used for cancer cell death

Tumeric one table every morning and night

Calcuim with magnesium and Vitamin D for my bones

Esther C 1000mg everyday and night

High dose IV Vitamin C, this is said to act like a natural chemo

             Omega 3 and 6

Biotin every morning and night - good for the hair and cancer cell death

I also try to eat fresh fruit and veges and when I can afford it I buy organic milk, bread and butter.

I too am still looking at other things just to see whats out there.

AMAZON PROTOCOL BY NUTRANOMICS. There. I did your homework for you! HAHA

I am stage IV...Now clear after just a year. I was told I was going to die... Amazon protocol helped strngthen my immune system, and get the cancer out of my body.  Go to cancertutor.com. Look at the treatments for your stage. Diet and excercise are critical. No meat, no dairy, est lots of organic fruits & vegetables...your body needs the strength to heal. Our bodies use up too much energy in the digestion of animal products. Your body has to be strong to survive the chemo. Take the time to research, or if you just can't I will help you. You can't mess around with this.

I have met with a natropath that is also an md - he was referred to me by my oncologist.

    During treatment I am on

    vit d3

    b6

    lglutamine (during taxol)

I have a list for after treatment as well

I also exercise daily - which I am sure has helped with side effects, I have had very few and eat a mostly organic, mostly vegan diet.  I will become completely vegan once treatment is over but right now with people cooking for us (good friends!) it is too hard to be too picky - though if they make something heavy with cream sauses or red meats I will eat something else and just let my family eat the heavy stuff.

Just found this post....hope it helps

Many women suffering from breast cancer are interested in learning more about natural treatment options. This type of treatment is often referred to in the medical field and Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) treatment, and there are actually a number of different types of treatment options that fall under this category.

    Understanding CAM

CAM is any type of medical practice, system, or product that is not considered to be the standard form of care. There are three areas of natural breast cancer treatment that fall under this category: Complementary Medicine, Alternative Medicine, and Integrative Medicine.

Complementary medicines are those that are used along with standard medical treatments like chemotherapy and surgery. A common complementary treatment is acupuncture, which is used to help with the side effects associated with cancer treatment. Alternative medicine, on the other hand, is a natural treatment approach that is used instead of standard medical treatments. Special diets to treat cancer, for example, may be used rather than chemotherapy. Integrative medicine takes care of your mind, body, and spirit by combining standard medicine techniques with CAM techniques.

Natural Breast Cancer Treatment Techniques Involving the Mind and Body

There are a number of treatment techniques you can utilize to help ease the pain and assist in the treatment process. Some of these techniques include:

Biofeedback - using machines to learn how to affect certain bodily functions you are normally not aware of, such as your heart rate.

Meditation - focusing breathing or repeating words or phrases in order to calm your mind.

Yoga - using special stretches and poses with special attention given to your breathing.

Hypnosis - creating a state of relaxed and focused attention and concentrating on certain ideas, feelings, or suggestions to assist in the healing process.

Creative Outlets - special therapy such as dance, music, and art.

Imagery - imagining certain pictures, scenes, or experiences in order to help the body heal.

Biological Natural Breast Cancer Treatment Options
It is also possible to treat your breast cancer by taking advantage of things found in nature, such as herbal products and dietary supplements. These can include certain foods, vitamins, herbs, and special dietary plans. Soy products are one additive that have shown a great deal of promise when it comes to preventing and treating breast cancer.

You should also include whole grain foods, beans, nuts, fruits, vegetables, fatty fish, low-fat dairy products, flaxseed, green tea, as many herbs as possible, and either virgin oil or canola oil in your diet. All kinds of herbs are good to add to your diet because they increase your intake of phytochemicals, which may help to fight cancer.

Body-Based Natural Breast Cancer Treatment Options

Body-based treatment options are those that work on one or more parts of your body. These techniques manipulate the body in order to achieve a greater level of health. Massage involves manipulation of the tissues, while chiropractic care manipulates the skeletal system and joints. Reflexology, which utilizes pressure points in the feet and hands to affect parts of the body, is another type of treatment.

Deciding if Natural Breast Cancer Treatment Options are Right for You

Before deciding to start a treatment program, it is important to discuss it with your doctor. There are certain foods and supplements that can actually interfere with other forms of treatment, so you want to be sure the plan you are following is safe.

Your best option is to consult a professional that is trained in natural strategies. Your doctor or nurse might be able to refer you to a specialist. If not, contact your local cancer center or hospital and ask for names of professionals that might be able to help you. Before working with the person, however, make sure he or she is licensed to practice in your state. Your health is important, so you need to be sure to have the best care possible.

    cedula,

You need to find time to do your homework.  You are fighting for your children and the only way to win this battle is with education and dedication to your health.  CAM can be very difficult to understand and expensive.  You need to know what will work for your life style and budget.  You can not total understand how tough it is to do CAM without the research of how and why's. I recomend one book to start you on your way...Beating Cancer with Nutrition- By Patrick Quillin. The other thing is finding a good homeopathic doctor. Go to the best local health food store in your area and ask the people who own it who is the best.  They usually know who they are.  If not they are listed in the yellow pages or online search. This can save you some research.

You have early disease but you still need to treat the body as if you have advanced disease.

Sum up: do the recommended conventional treatments. These are the only ones that have been proven in randomized clinical trials to effectively kill cancer.

When you complete your treatment, do whatever alternatively you think best.

I strongly recommend that you do NOT take anything without running it by your oncologist. Some of the well-meaning suggestions offered here can compromise the effectiveness of chemo and radiation treatments.

    Dejaboo:

Be careful with the Indol-Carbinol supplement.  I went to a herbalist in NY early this week.  He recommended DIM but not 3 IC since they are finding it has carcinogenic properties.  He said both were contained in cabbage but it was OK to eat the cabbage but not to take the supplement.

Another thought is a Herbilist named Holly Hayward owner of Sugar Hill Botanicals in Sugar Hill New Hampshire.  She can be reached at hhayward@ncia.net or 603-8434.

Each cancer is different, she will need your path report and at least a hour of your time to develop a program.

She develops many of her own herbs on location.  Very knowledgeable and worth talking with.

Hope this helps... feel better everyone.

I agree that you need to find time to research this for yourself although I am happy to help if I can.  For example I have read a book which completely convinced me to give up all dairy (which was not easy given my liking for it) but note that a lot of knowledgeable people on this site do eat it.  Equally, I eat soya products but notice that a lot of people who are happily eating dairy are refraining from soya.  I guess what I am trying to say is, the advice is often contradictory and you need to find out for yourself what 'fits'.  Asking doctors about nutritional advice is, in most cases, a waste of time because they simply don't study nutrition and repeat a standard answer that we should eat a 'balanced diet'.

Ok, so here's the thing...Blunt as hell, but I really am so frusterated with how complicated we make being healthy. We can research until we turn blue. There is no mystery here girls!!!!! God gave us everything we need to live a healthy LONG life...it's comes from what we pull from the ground and pick from our trees...Not what we milk from other animals...(do you realize that we are the only species on the planet that consumes another animal's milk????) or slaughter to get our new york steak or veal parmesan. The foods God gave us are HEALING. As far as the conventional treatment...It is proven to kill not only cancer cells, but our healthy cells as well. So we should wait until the chemo nearly kills us...until we are through with it to start healing??? And we are told to stay away from the rain forest herbs that are PROVEN to kill cancer cells, we are told that we need to wait until we finish chemo to work on our immune systems. blah blah blah...all this by PROFESSIONALS who go to the soda machine and give COCA COLA to their patients because they are thirsty, during their chemo. I talked with a gal when I started my chemo who was frusterated with the fact that she had been in treatment for almost two years...all this while she ate two egg mcmuffins and slurped down a supersized coke. Whatever. Maybe knowlegeable people on this site eat dairy, but are they healing? All I know is that one year ago I was told I was dying. And today...actually today, I was told that some folks think I was faking my cancer, because I looked ...well Freaking fabulous all the way through treatment, all this while I was going along with the conventional stuff in addition to doing what my common sense told me to do. My will to live is far stronger than my sweet tooth. It's far too easy and quite frankly, a cop out to pin the responsibility of our well being on our doctors, and we love what they tell us because with their blessing we can continue to eat our krispy kream donuts and milk. Sorry if this offends anyone, but let's get a grip and take control.

I highly recommend going to see a certified nutritionist, ideally someone who has expertise in working with cancer patients. My nutrionist was able to some interesting testing which helped me realize I was allergic to gluten and dairy and identify other nutrional deficiencies which likely contributed to my cancer. One huge thing to know is that vitamin D deficiencies have correlated with breast cancer recurrences. My doc & nutrionist both rec'd 5000 mg of D3.

you rock nixiechaos!  Love to hear success stories like yours!

There's definitely information overload in our world and a lot of conflicting opinions.  I recently learned a vegan diet is provides insufficient levels of B12 in a form we can assimilate.  At first I thought, well, that sounds like an indication that we're not supposed to be vegan.  Then I learned there's a sublingual B12 (absorption is via the mouth, not the digestive tract) that can be free of animal products.

The more I read, though, the more I see success stories achieved with vegan diets which are 80% raw food.   Also, the more I read about our food, chemical and pharmacuetical companies, the more concerned I am about keeping the beast from ever coming back on me.

Ok, ladies... my 2 cents also!

    You go girl, nixie!

cebula,  As you can see most of us are reaching out to help and share our experience , however, with all due respect.  You can't afford NOT to take the time to do some research.  You have a relatively good dx and probably a great prognosis.

I have found many books that helped me.  I did choose traditional along with complimentary therapy with the approval of my oncologist who happens to be a personal friend as well as my physician.

The book I think would be most helpful to you which is also available in a cd is Beating Cancer With Nutrition by Dr. Patrick Quillin.  The best thing is he is former VP of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, but in addition to that... he gives information of what supplements are MOST important and when money is an issue which ones to prioritize.  You can Google him and read excerpts from his book.

Whenever we take any b vitamins they should be b complex as they are meant to work together.  You can take 3 per day, or timed released which is what I do.

You must trust that the right information will come to you.  I also recommend to remember that to beat cancer requires body, mind and spirit.  It is all interconnected.

I also found great comfort in Louise Hay's information as well as a healing journey of "life"  You can also Google her.

I have a friend who is 10 years cancer free who went totally holistic post surgery.. and she has been very generous in sharing her experience.  10 years cancer free speaks to my heart!

Good Luck in your fight. You can win, but you may need to put "Yourself" first for a while!  What a concept, huh?"
