I love the onion goggles.  Everyone in my family calls me the "gadget lady" because I love cutsy gadgets.  Last year I gave olive spoons.  This yr it will be onion goggles...  lolol.

    Hi All,

There were more than 5,000 walkers yesterday!!  It was a beautiful walk through the old section of downtown Orlando - I never knew that Orlando had "hills", but some of the stretches were uphill for awhile, and I definitely needed my O2.  I probably could have collected more donations for our team if I had offered to share, for $5 or $10 per minute, LOL.

I was going to insert a picture of our team, but can't figure out how to do it.  HELP?

    Hugs,

    Karen

How to survive peeling an onion without goggles.  Do it under running water.

What makes you cry is the fumes from the onion mixing with the water in your eyes, producing sulfuric acid.  Doing the cutting under water prevents this.

Of course, a food processor works, too.  Just don't make mine PINK.

Thanks for the belly laughs. I was alerted to this thread just recently. Glad I checked it out. I hate that pink (one of my fav. colors) has been taken hostage by BC. I have my share of pink ribbons--all gifts from friends, family, students, etc. One of my most funny gifts was a HOT PINK camping chair-- dunno what you call 'em... its one of those chairs that fold up and can be stored in a bag. We take chairs to the field to watch our kids play sports... imagine trying to blend in with the crowd with my a$$ parked in that baby!

Karen, I took the liberty of uploading your photo.  I'll PM some instructions to you later.  Karen is the proud medal-wearer on the right.  Her granddaughter is just next to her with her arms folded, and her daughter-in-law is between them in the pink cap.  Great photo!  Kathi

One of my work colleagues gave me this when I came back to work.  No, I don't really have my avatar on my ID badge, but wouldn't that be a hoot if I did??  BTW, my PT license is not actually expired.

Summer, here are some more flower photos:  http://www.kksphotos.com/flora.html.  For some more BC laughs, click on the "Sketches" link on that page.

Kak: I love  your whit and humor.  YES - I also want this to never have happened, but together we can get through it.   I think a t shirt with the glow in the dark boob would make an awesome Halloween costume - but I do have a weird sense of humor.

Speaking of which - Party City has a GoGo girl PINK wig for $ 4.99 --- MY Halloween costume or maybe my "don't mess with me" head covering for those days when I am in one of my "moods"..

LeftyAKAnancy, one of the other women here on the forum who is finishing rads soon is actually planning on dressing up as a Boob that Glows in the Dark for Halloween.  so, great minds think alike!  I hope she posts a photo here if she does.  She's trying to talk her husband into dressing as the Normal Boob.  LOL!  Like the pink wig!  You gotta post a photo here if you can.

Otter, I have to schlepp my camera to the mall because I've seen a few interesting things in the past few days:

    1)  Susan G. Komen Purina Cat Chow.  The huge bag of it has pink packaging, which is silly, but they do say that they are donating $175,000 to BC research.

    2) This came in an email from Sony (I have a Sony wide-screen flat screen computer monitor):.  I couldn't tell when I clicked the link how much money was actually going to go to research.

    3) This I found accidentally.  It was on a cancer research site.  Sutter Home Vineyards started this, I guess, because they make a very popular blush wine that happens to be pink.  They used to also auction a pink motorscooter signed by a bunch of celebs (actually, I have a friend with a pink scooter whose husband gave it to her when she had cancer!), but now they're sponsoring a woman cyclist.  Interesting:

My dentist office is into the pink thing.  I had a check up this week and the little sample size of floss was in a pink shaped tooth with the ribbon on it and it was on a key ring.  The whole thing seemed odd.  I keep dental floss with me in my purse, but wouldn't think of having it on with my keys.  I guess it is the thought and the packaging did mention donating money.

Heh heh, rock.  Surivor.  If It wasn't chemobrain, then it must have been that there was no room for the other "v" I guess.  I hope the cake was good anyway.

    Summer, what was that

I saw the special edition, pink plaid-for-BC Better Homes & Gardens cookbook at Lowe's again.  Nobody bought it yet.  Has anyone else noticed that a lot of the pink-for-BC stuff is marked way down on sale lately?  Must not be moving very well.  I once again managed to avoid buying the pink Pillsbury Grands biscuits and the pink boxes of General Mills cereal.

I never said this before.  When I was visiting my parents in August, I noticed that my mom had a little, pink BC ribbon-shaped ornament on a keychain attached to her purse.  It was not there last winter (before my BC dx).  My sister also had one attached to the zipper on her purse.  There was a third BC keychain ornament lying on the windowsill in my mom's kitchen.  I didn't tell anyone in my family that I had seen it.  I suppose it was for me, but I had been fussing so much about all the "awareness" stuff making me uncomfortable (like, does anybody think I'm not aware already???)...

Now I feel bad about being such a grouch, when they were trying to reach out in whatever way they could.

    otter (sniff, sniff...)

Aww Otter.  Your mom and your sister...well, I think that is sweet.  They think they are making a contribution...as do many.  They probably feel that it connects them to "it" in some way.  But don't feel bad for being a grouch.  Tonight, my 8 year old son is with me at checkout at Safeway.  They have a big BC awareness "thing" going on this month...duh.  So tonight they have a bead chain (like mardigras beads) hanging at the counter with the sign that says how much goes to bc.  He SO wants one because he wants to help.  So I bought one for him.  $2 for beads worth .05 but makes him feel like $1,000,000.00.  $1 goes to bc..fine.  Its $1 they wouldn't have gotten in June if he'd asked me to buy him a cheap chain of painted beads worth .05 and HE feels like he is helping cure mommy.  I'm good with that.

Saw an article on MSN today questioning all the bc $$$ and that no other cancer gets as much attention.

It had to happen, we've over advertised!  (as noted above: discounted pink items)

I don't know, I didn't delete, it and cannot seem to find it again.

INTERNATIONAL. Today, 1 October, The Estée Lauder Companies enters the 16th year of its battle against breast cancer, and travel retail once again is set to play a pivotal role. The 2008 campaign is spearheaded by the slogan: 'World Pink. World Without Breast Cancer. Wear a Pink Ribbon. Make A Difference'.

By the end of October, The Estée Lauder Companies' Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Campaign will have distributed more than 80 million pink ribbons and millions of informational brochures through the group's brand counters; illuminated more than 200 global landmarks in pink lights; and raised approximately US$35 million with its retail partners for research.

This year's slogan aims to encapsulate the spirit of bringing people together from all walks of life to find a cure for breast cancer. This October, the BCA Campaign will be present in over 60 countries and will unite around a common goal: to reach every corner of the world with the message about the importance of early detection, and to raise significant funds for research in order to attain a world without breast cancer in the not too distant future.

In 2007 alone, The Estée Lauder Companies' Global Landmarks Illumination Initiative illuminated over 200 landmarks worldwide, including (top-bottom) Belvedere Castle, Austria; The Arena, Italy; and Los Angeles International Airport, USA

I am personally glad there is awareness for Breast Cancer and all other cancers. Years ago, when my mom had bi lat mastectomies the " C " word was a huge no no  ----  you were evil or possessed by the devil IF you should develop cancer.   Many of you may too young to remember.  However, even today - cancer is looked down upon by many.  HOW did you get it, what did you do, or not do to get it... GRRRRRRR...    I am sporting pink today for chemo, even my pink wig -  as we celebrate the last tx for Bonnie and Christina.  BTW, by the way, the pink wig only cost $ 4.99 and I do need something on my head as it is only 37 degrees outside...

Oh, rock!  That cake is freakin' awesome.  And Summer, you are amazing, finding these photos that you find.  I don't know how I feel about the landmarks thing.  They did that here in RI with a local & really righteous BC organization by lighting the RI state house in pink lights.  Mostly, the artist part of me loves the whole thing & the rest of me gets kind of a kick out of the symbolism.  I don't know how much it really accomplishes, but I know that it is a way to get a bunch of people to think about BC who wouldn't think about it ordinarily.  And if that leads to one more woman getting a mammogram or an ultrasound & saving her life, then it's a good thing.

Otter, in general, I think intent is the whole thing anyway with the pink stuff.  Who's doing it, why, what's the real agenda, etc., etc.  We can get righteous about the blatant rip-off's & the corporate overkill & still love our friends & family who want to make a statement that they love us by having a pink thing.

Here's a case in point.  Last night, I went to a fund-raising event called "Tickled Pink," at a local country club that was sponsored by Women & Infants Hospital in Providence, where I had my biopsy & lumpectomy.  We got dinner & camaradery plus an evening of comedy by two local women who have a comedy duo called "Girls Night Out," & a nationally traveled woman comic named Michele Balan.  The food was good, the comics were absolutely hilarious & I cried off all my mascara by laughing.  At the beginning, one of the surgeons told us about a research study that was funded partly by money raised by this event.  Then they gave each of us who'd had/have breast cancer a pink feather boa!!  And later they gave away goodie bags for the raffle tickets they sold.  It was a really fun & light-hearted night.  I got a pink boa & won a goodie bag that was put together & donated by another survivor who was two rows in front of me.  The goodie bag was filled with a lot of stuff I feel ambivalent about, but the spirit with which it was donated & came my way was wonderful.  This morning, I proudly wore my pink boa to the office to drop off some paperwork.  Here's a few pix:

Taking a photo of myself in the mirror with my boa.

Here's the goodie bag & contents.  The hot pink pen has a message with the phone # of the local mammography center.  My favorite thing is the boobie cookies from the dessert buffet.
