Jan 2008--Ain't it Great?

Okay, SIS Kimberly. Get twinsis a cape. It's a must-have. Who'da thunk you'd be leading your baby sister through this journey? Well, as others have said, she could not have a better guide. (I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea that your BRCA results were negative. -That's right, isn't it?-- With all the bc in your family I find it hard to believe it's coincidence.) We're totally here for you and Kathleen.
Deb-It was SO good to see your post. I'm happy that life is getting in the way of your time online with us! Your walk was yesterday-hope the dogs aren't barking too much today. Speaking of dogs, your puppy is looking good.
I, too, had occasion to wear my Jewels FUBC t-shirt yesterday. I attended a bc awareness conference at the hospital where my surgery was done. It was interesting-particularly when they had a panel of 4 women describe their journey. Even I was on the verge of tears! I did realize a couple of things about myself there. First, I want to try yoga. They had a demo of seated yoga and I was really digging it. Second, I'm going to really try to get a script from someone to get massage therapy through the wellness center at the hospital as their massage therapists are also trained to deal with le and will adjust their touch to the le side (I'd been told no real massage due to the le, so this could be just what I need). Third, I'm going to try to make my mind more open to the idea of seeing a professional to get me over my hump. Listening to the presentations yesterday, I think I might be allowing bc and my marriage situation put me in a state of depression. Not sure (no doctor here-just see them on tv), but maybe, just maybe... Now I have to figure out where to find a therapist and allow myself to talk out loud to someone about these things. I'm really not excited about the prospect of more appointments, especially since I should be dropping two a week at the end of this month (the rotator cuff therapy) and I'm thinking about adding the massage therapy, but I'll think about it. (Not till after my trip!)
Ugh, Julie, you have to wait till the end of the month?! That sucks. Glad you survived homecoming. Our dance was held last night and dd is still in bed, so I don't know how it went. But she looked really pretty. College girl (who is a clothes horse) brought home a couple of dresses to loan her sis, so we didn't have to go out and get a new one. College girl helped dd cover her backne and off she went. She went with a really nice group of girls, so I'm sure there were lots of laughs. I can't wait to hear the report. Today dd is going to try playing basketball on her ankle again. It's been 5 weeks since she's played, but her p/t seems to think she's ready to try it-not to mention the fortune in orthotics and braces she'll be wearing... I just hope she plays well-she allows her performance on the court to color her outlook on the rest of the world.
Hey SP! Great gift idea! I received a bookmark and a booklight to take on my trip. Now I have to find just the right tome to break them in. Thanks!!!
Oh, and just an update on college girl. She's blossoming in to a wonderful adult. She's so much quicker to give a hug than she's ever been. She has thought-out opinions of the world and can concisely share them. And, she's beautiful. I'm loving it. Of course, she came home and announced that she's met her future husband (again!). She's bumped in to this guy twice at school events and they're talking. The other girls are jealous, so that's encouraging to college girl (we all know how girls are!). There doesn't sound like much to work on, yet, but she's swooning and eager to get back to school to see if something works out. It's fun to watch.
That's about it here. I think today is going to be go, go, go! Guess I'd better get ready!

Hi Jewels,
I have not finished reading the post, so glad i'm not so far behind. I finally put on a picture showing off my new hair and chemo curls. I have been so busy doing the training for that on line job. It seems to be on the up and up. Tomorrow I go back to Kmart too.
D1 Thanks for letting me know the toe nails grow back. I do remember you telling me about your toenails falling off. It was so wierd my toe nails were fine until around the end of August, one of them is still black, i'm waiting for that to come off. You are right, when my other toe nail came off, there was no pain. I was so grateful for that. You are right FU breast cancer and taxotere. My FU is Forget you BC. I also hope you get things worked out in your personal life, don't give up, sending positive vibes your way.{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{ HUG }}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
Oh about that guy I like well he was flattered about the letter and called me, it's going slower than I hoped. He lives 45 min from me. Today we had lunch, and I thought we got along real well, he took a picture of me, poor guy. I guess we will have to wait and see, he is shy and i'm shy, I don't know. I'm hoping something will come out of this.
Big Hugs to everyone. Sherry

Hi all, again,
Thought I'd show off my new non-curls, from a recent get-away. My local chemo-buddy has the most awesome curls, but I got nuthin' except more gray. Oh, well, it's only hair! I'll be doing the local Race for the Cure next Sunday, which just happens to be the 1-year anniversary of the mammogram.
-
Thank you all for your kind words and support over the news of my twinsis. Thankfully, the tumor is only 7mm, so it's small. The breast MRI I encouraged her to ask for instead of a mammogram considering our family history saved her a year of waiting to find it. The mammo they did do right before the biopsy showed nothing. Had she had the mammo first, her doctor would have given her the all clear, and she would have known nothing for another year maybe longer. So, that's a blessing.
Carla, I was so glad to see you’d posted. I couldn’t see the video, only hear it, but you sounded great!
And Maz, and Kris, and CHJ…how wonderful to hear from you, too.
We’ve missed you.
Oh Therese, I’m just 47, and no one told me I had a 50-50 chance of getting my period back. That would not be good for me being ERPR positive. I just pray mine stays away for good. I haven’t had any hot flashes in awhile, so now I’m wondering if I too will see Aunt Flo again. It’s been since February. Oh bother!!!! That is the least of my worries right, now, however.
So SP, I’m listening to my new CD Peaceful Garden right now. I love it. I’ve loaded into my computer, so now I’ll take it to school to use during quiet work time. Thank you so much.
To my SP, where I got your present required me to put a return address in order to ship it, so you’ll no longer be wondering who your SP is, I imagine, but that’s OK…it’s still fun to surprise each other isn’t it?
Deb, wow, another voice we haven’t heard in awhile. You sound great. How great to be volunteering at the Race for the Cure, and staying in a nice hotel right at the start of it. Good planning.
Jules- Hmmm, seems appropriate to wait until the ‘end’ of the month for such a procedure…even the word endoscopy has the word ‘end’ in it, and that’s also the portion of the anatomy it focuses on, too….OK, sorry, I couldn’t help it. I teach junior high.
Glad you survived Homecoming at your school. Did your students dress all funny, like D1’s daughter with her crazy outfit last week?
Paula, I can just picture your beautiful backyard scenery…fall colors, blue azure sky, crisp air and nature as far as you can see…NICE!!!! Thanks for thinking of my twinsis and I while communing.
Hope you have a great trip. Seems you do lots of these conference type trips with your students. How does the school afford it? We’re having trouble just getting to go to local workshops due to costs.Sherry - Love your curls. I'm with CHJ, no curls for me either, just more grey, but I'm not complaining, it is so easy and so soft.
D1, thanks for the well wishes and support. I do need to find twinsis a cape of her own.
I loved hearing about your dd's homecoming date - the girls. How fun to just be with your galpals and not worry about boys, and then on the other side of the coin is your college girl. Man, I so remember that age and swooning over boys who were 'the one'.
I'm so proud of you for making the choice to start yoga, get massages, and see a therapist. Yeah!!!! on all three counts. Therapy can be such a wonderful experience...hard at times, but so worth it in the long run.
I bought a Wii Fit. It is so cool. I bowled. I played golf. I can do yoga, aerobics, strength training, and balancing exercises and so much more. It’s very user friendly and gets others involved, too. The whole family bowled yesterday.
So, I got on the scale at 147 this morning, but I can't help but think it's water loss or dehydration again. I was 148.5 all last week. How could it be that I just lost it overnight? It would be nice, but don't think so.
I’ve got company coming this week ( a college friend) and Greg is gone this week, so I’m the entertainment goddess for the week. We’ll have dinner tomorrow with twinsis, oldersis, and ds and his gf. Then the rest of the week, I’m cooking, I guess.
Take care my Jewel friends,
SIS Kimberly -
Happy Sunday,
Its another quiet Sunday for me. The dh drove to the other side of the state to see his daughter play soccer. It's a heck of a drive (12 hrs roundtrip) for watching what sometimes is minimal play time. Its me and the dogs, a fire in the fireplace and a Seahawk game on the tube. My bones are complaining to me today for probably overdoing it yesterday. I decided to shovel gravel, as well as a lot of other yard work. The ds was stacking two cords of wood and the dh was winterizing the boat. Speaking of achy bones, I've chatted with a gal on the CMF post who also has dealt with the pains of taking an AI. She has had great success with taking Vit D3 along with Magesium. Figure it might be worth a try, so far the magnetic bracelet is useless!
We then had my dad and his significant other over for dinner. They will be heading back to Florida for the winter in a couple of days. Needless to say, I'm glad it's a three day weekend. Tomorrow the ds is going to be evaluated at Sylvan Learning Center, and then his dad and I meet with them to determine what kind of help they may be able to give the ds with his studies.
So whats' been happening with you all ???
Kathy, hoping that your eve out Friday was memorable. Who'd ever have thought a eve listening to a bc survivor would be right up there on our list of fun things to do ! Hoping you get the chance to share your eve with us.
D1, speaking of Yoga, I checked out the classes offered at our local Rec center. I'm starting tomorrow night, looks like I should be able to go both on Mon/Weds in the early eve. I also need to get my tired lazy butt to the gym atleast two other days of the week. I have become quite the couch potato the last month.
Leave it to you to wear a "FUBC" shirt to the conference!!! Sounds like it was worth attending and that just maybe you will seek out somebody to "chat" away with. Its funny how we go to docs for just about everything under the sun, but we don't think about our mental health and how important it really is.
So I'm sure that we'll get a detailed account of the homecoming dance. We'll be gearing up this week for the homecoming gig. I guess they are trying to make it a less formal event to encourage better participation at the dance. Heck as I recall we had our dance right after the football game with very little pomp and circumstance.
Paulal, ahhh the view from your porch sounds rather inviting.
I enjoyed chatting once again, that was a quick hour !!!
Deb, welcome back ... wow, the Race for the Cure in your neck of the woods is huge. The ol' Jewels have gotten some good publicity on a few walks this year.
Don't let some of us chatty cathy's keep you from popping in to just say hi, you are so right that the best angels are right here for us.
Sherry, another Jewel sportin' a cute do ... you've got yourself a full head of hair, did you have curly hair pre bc? Here's hoping things move in the right direction with your "friend"!
Kimberly, what can I say, you've been on my mind often over the last few days. Here you we're moving along with your own journey, putting last year behind you, going forward with an ever so positive spin on life. We all know that you will be the best support that Kathleen could ever ask for, I just so wish that it wasn't needed. Although there is not much that we can do to ease the raw feelings of those first few days after a diagnosis, I sure hope you will ask away if there is something that you think we can do to help. I would like Kathleen's address if you could PM it.
CHJ, glad you liked the pics, and to see your post. I do have to chuckle as I sit here in my "pink" survivor t-shirt !!! Yep, I'd be one of those gals who still wears my pink rubber bracelets as well. Figure if I can make just one person aware of taking preventative measures with regards to bc, its worth it .
Therese, hey just a quick note to say your doing well now and again would be great. Don't let these darn winded posts deter you from popping in.
Okay, I probably should motivate to do something productive ... not that chatting here is unproductive ... its always good for my mental game.
Carol

Hey Kimberly, just read your post ... was happy to hear that Kathleen's tumor appears to be relatively small. All the more reason to have an MRI as our first line of defense. My guess is that your sis will still have some pretty hefty decisions to make as to what extent of txt to take on, as we know those are some of the toughest times.
Sounds like your going to be a busy gal, remember to breath !!!
CHJ, great pic ... talk about beautiful country, is that in your neck of the woods? We'll be looking forward to hearing about your Race for the Cure walk as well.
I guess I better continue to add pics to my Jewel file for an update in a few months !!!

Hi Jewels! Life is in overdrive these days, but it's all good. The kids are social butterflies... parties every weekend this month. I've been busy planning ds' parties. Going to send cupcakes and a piñata to preschool (a pull one, not one that the kids need to whack!). Having relatives over on his actual b-day for cake, etc. He chose "Little Einsteins" as his theme; hope that's a sign of his future! Hee hee! Dd's soiree will be next month, just starting to brainstorm that one, but she wants a Hello Kitty theme.
So, I met Robin Roberts Friday night! Her speech was great and very inspiring. Could relate in so many ways with what she had to say and got teary a few times. I love her "make your mess your message" statement. And she also said that "we are all stronger than we think"... so true! Dh bought me her newest book, and I got her to sign it afterwards at the hors d'oevres hour... all at the Hotel DuPont, so it was posh. Sat with my friend and fellow "booby buddy" and her dh. She got a picture of herself, me, and Robin together. I hope she sends it soon. I'll try to post it then. Robin is just one classy (and tall!) lady, and I'm so glad I got to meet her. Truly a very cool experience. Can't wait to read her book now...
Saturday was also a big day. I got my first official haircut! This time I actually had enough for her to cut and color. The curls are gone though... I guess that first cut really does them in. I wasn't too attached to them anyway as they were quite unruly (but wish I'd taken a picture of them anyway... rats!). The new ‘do is a very rich caramel color with some blonde highlights on top in the front. I've never colored my hair before, so this is all new to me. But since I'm no longer blonde, I thought I'd embrace the brown. Again, I'll try to get a picture. I'm in the process of working on dh to buy a new camera...
So, over to the boards... I've missed a lot and just want to make some quick shout outs.
Love all the recent pictures that have been posted... Joan, Julie and Norma, Sherry. Everyone looks great! Norma, my hair looked like yours before I had it cut.
Sherry: Sorry to hear about your toenails. I have been lucky that my nails remained on, they just look like crap and break and peel all the time. Good luck with the dating. I just can't imagine doing that again...
D1: I hope you follow through on your thought to see someone to discuss the issues at home with dh. You seem like such an awesome person... you deserve to have every aspect of your life good! I do hope things get better for you two.
Loved reading about your dd. Ain't young love grand??
Maz: Nice to hear from you again. I am scheduled to have my port out in January under "twilight sedation". I am way too much of a chicken to be awake for that one. Please report back on how yours goes.
Therese: Happy Belated Birthday! Uh, Mother Nature wasn't so kind to you. Hope you got something nicer from others!
Carla: Good to hear from you. Another local news celeb among the Jewels! How are things on the home front for you these days?
Carol: Yes, thank you for the pictures of all the Jewels. I loved them.
Kimberly: I echo everyone's comments and support to you and your sister. FUBC! It's all so unfair and shitty...
You'll have to post more about your Wii Fit. I've heard a lot about them. I'm not really into video games, but all the activity does intrigue me.
CHJ: Happy cancerversaries!
Deb102307: Hope you enjoyed your walk. The weather here was beautiful; I hope you got some nice weather, too. Good to hear from you again.
Well, I need to get going. Have lots to get together for the week ahead. As always, I'm thinking of all the Jewels. Remember, we ARE all stronger than we think!

Hi I was reading up on the post and found out I missed a lot again.
Kimberly I'm so sorry to hear about your sister, I was praying it was not cancer. Thank Goodness Kathleen has you, and you can give her all the postive vibes and keep telling her she will be a survivor. When you are going threw treatment you don't ever beleive you will feel good again. At the end of the misrable journey the light from out of the tunnel starts to shine. I hope she chats with us. Your new hair is hot too, I do like how soft our new hair is to. That was a blessing the cancer was found so fast.
CHJ I also love your new do, and the picture of you and the mountains is awesome. Where was that picture taken? My hair is grey too, I just started getting some brown hair. Let us know how you did in your cancer walk. Sending lots of positive energy. Happy Cancerversaries.
Carol No, my hair had some natural body in it, but not like this. It looks like I put a body wave into my hair. I really believe it's thicker too. It's cool because I don't have to curl it anymore, it will work I guess. I may keep my hair shorter since it has so much curl in it. I would like it to get a little bit longer.
KathyL That is cool you got to meet Robin, she looks like on T.V. really nice person. Great experience for you. My fingernails keep breaking off, that drives me nuts. Jewels I also had to 86 the hair on my face. I just use my hair face off thing. It's like purple with pink something like sand paper. It takes all the hair off, I really like it. Just don't rub too hard.
I seen my surgeon on Fri and he wants to do a gastrocopy test on me to make sure all the sludge and acids are out of my stomach. I feel like COME ON! I'm tired, i'm calling tomorrow and rescheduling the test for the end of the month. I'm scheduled to work that day, i'm not asking for more time off.
Cathy I think a jewel get together would be great. Hoping I can come along too. I do envy you and SIS Kimberly lapping up that CA Sun. I was shocked today it was 84 degrees it's been 6 wks or longer since it's been that hot.
Paula I was cracking up at your post, and like you, lt's hard to believe a bra could cost $400 bucks. I agree with Paula D1 that bra should be able to jump hoops or something. Hopefully it does it's job. It sounds like you are real busy at work.
It was good to hear from Carla and Deb and CHJ, I hope some of our other MIA's check it soon. Thats great Carla you spoke on behalf of breast cancer and was on T.V. WTG. I'm still lurking and reading post.
I did a real dumb thing, I have had trouble swelling today and it was on my mind to take a water pill, I decided to take it in the morning. I thought I took my Tamox and just discovered it was the water pill. I'm really out of it today. I'm going to be peeing all night, I don't sleep as it is. I'm hoping I don't pee all night. Talk about your chemo brain. Sleep tight
Lots of hugs, Sherry

Just a quick note......Thanks for the welcome back from so many people.
And, drum roll please.......LITTLE ROCK ARKANSAS once again broke a record for their 15th Race for the Cure. Unofficial count was 46,982 registered. I am going to a volunteer party later in the week so will hear the official numbers and money raised. It was so awesome and I met so many cool people. It was an emotional day to say the least. At the survivor luncheon, the author of the book "Middle Place" was guest speaker and my whole table was in tears. Donna Terrell from Fox news (She used to be in Michigan at Fox) was the MC. All at my table agreed to meet at the same table next year. If I can figure out how, I will post the survivor photo. Today I am pretty much sore all over. I didn't walk the race but I sure walked all over with volunteering and trying to get goodies. Luckily, I sit in a chair at work.
Hope all are doing better that need to be and that everyone else is praying for them.
Catch ya'll later!

Oh my, a lot has happened in a day! Good news is that the Vikings won (okay, the interference call was questionable, but sometimes you just gotta get the breaks!). I was totally bummed that Seattle didn't win, though, as they were playing one of our division rivals and the Vikes coulda used the assist... (Sorry, Carol)
Sherry, no wonder you're hot to trot, girl, you look GREAT!! Thanks for the photo update. It's hard to believe you've recently been through more surgery. Oh, and forgot to tell you: on the toenails. Keep them moisturized. When the nail falls off it leaves a crusty "nail" underneath (I tried to paint that to make my nail look longer-what a weirdo!), and if you keep it lotioned up good, it will look better. Without the lotion it looks all dried out and yucky. The lotion is good for your feet, anyway!
And thanks for the hug. I'll get it together.
CHJ-your hair looks great!! And where are you? Kinda resemble the scenic overlook on 270, but I don't remember anywhere where you can get out on the rocks.
SIS Kimberly-I'm so glad you were there to get the MRI for your twinsis. It's much better to catch it now. We'll all be eager to hear how she decides to proceed as we'll want to send her our Jewel Jewce (hmm, I was getting creative with the alliteration and spelling of ‘juice.' Does it work???). This is the tough time-figuring out what to do. Our thoughts are with her as she makes her first decisions.
I started asking questions about massage today. I think it will have to wait till I find a doc to write me a script for it. I want to use the wellness center at the hospital so they can do my MLD at the same time and I need a doc for that. I'll ponder it. And I was perturbed with myself for forgetting to pick up the flyer on the yoga classes today, maybe I'll remember on Thursday when I'm over there next time. Still in the talking about it phase with the therapy. I think I'll wait to start that one till I get back from the Bahamas. I did talk to dh today (oh, he's on his way out your direction-Seattle tonight and tomorrow, Portland on Weds, Sacramento on Thurs, San Jose on Fri and then the red eye home), and told him that I want to see someone to discuss our situation and asked him if he'd be up for joining me if appropriate. He agreed. I take that as a good sign.
Hang in there on the weight. As you know, sometimes it bounces around a little. I've been stuck on the last 5 pounds for months! In fact, I put on 3 lbs about 3 weeks ago and I think I may finally be backing off that now. I'd love to lose that last 5 so I don't have to buy some new pants this winter-I've tried on my old ones and they're just too tight in the crotch and around the waistband. I can't wear them, yet. With colder weather coming, I've got to do something quick!! You'll get there. I suspect the Wii Fit thingy will help!
Do you think the magnetic bracelet would do more good if you'd stop shoveling gravel, Carol???? I see you were watching the ‘Hawks yesty-you guys can't catch a break with your professional sports teams, can you? You saw dh will be in your neck of the woods tonight. His plane takes off from here around 6p and he lands in Sea-Tac at 11:30, or something equally stupid for a 52 year old man. Keep him in line, would ya?
Hope the Sylvan eval went okay today. I hope ds is in the mood to be helped-with teens I found that to be the larger battle. I know he doesn't want to be harped on by your bald (well, not so much anymore!) lady friends, but pull out my thuggin' picture and tell him I said this year is important for college! Do his homework-that's the gimme part of the grade! (It'll help when it comes time for the tests, too, I promise.)
Brag corner!!!!! College girl got her first philosophy grade emailed from her prof-she scored 100% on her test!!! That's a third of her grade!!! Shit, I don't even understand philosophy! (She needs some good grades to go abroad. She finished her freshman year with a 2.7 and needs a 3.0 to go overseas-yikes!)
Hope you have a good week getting ready for homecoming. Dd said the dinner before her dance was a lot of fun. One of her friends figured out the tip and what everyone owed and dd said the server came back to the table four times to thank them, so she figured her friend over-calculated. Not what the server expected from a table of high school girls, I'm sure! They arrived at the dance 10 minutes before they closed the doors (they don't let anyone in to the dances at our high school after 10p). Someone said they were cutting it close and dd said, ‘no, if it were nine minutes from now, it would be close!' Smart ass. She said the music was lame and too many chaperones, but their group danced anyway and apparently hopped around yelling, ‘Oh-nine!' to let everyone know they were the seniors! She was home by 11:30p and happy as a clam. May your experience this weekend go just as well.
Oh, I remember the parties, KathyL. They're so much fun. I always loved how my kids would jabber on during the car rides about all the drama a 5 year old (or whatever) could have. It makes you remember how unimportant your own concerns are. We def need a photo of your new ‘do! It's so much fun to be girly again, isn't it?
So happy you and dh had a good experience with Robin Roberts. I'm always so impressed with her when I tune in to ABC. I hope the book is as good as her talk.
Hey, Carol, did you see that? KathyL is having her port removed under twilight sedation. Is that something you can have so you only have to pull your big girl panties on halfway????
I dunno Sherry, I think I'd want sludge and acids out! But I do know what you mean about the medical appointments!
Deb-totally AWESOME re: the Little Rock numbers! Isn't it great to participate in those events? So reaffirming. Even to those like me who are not so much in to the "pink." It's wonderful that you connected with so many. I'd love to see some pictures.
I think I'll go clean the green beans so I can be ready to roll on dinner when the girls get home. It'll be kinda fun to just be the three girls tonight!

D1 and someone else who asked about my pic - it's at Shenandoah National Park. DH & I went up there for an over-niter. It was our first night away together since before-cancer. We were there mid-week, and it was not at all crowded. It was awesome. We hiked about 1.5 miles to get to the overlook.
SisKimberly, I am sorry about your sister. She is so fortunate to have you there, though. That's the one thing about women with bc - we are always there for each other. It's the best club-you-never-wanted-to-join.
KathyL -meeting Robin R. must have been so cool! And congrats on your hair cut.
I've had mine lightly trimmed twide, around the ears and at the nape, which is just all over the place. Still trying to decide how long I want my hair to get. It's so easy short like this.
Carol - you can wear your pink bracelet! I am all for awareness and I think it's important. I just don't know that I need pink spatulas and vacuum cleaners. Over on the "moving beyond breast cance" section, there is a thread that's "pink:not just for Pepto Bismol" thread that's just hilarious. I just think the whole pink thing is so over done. First, pink is not really my color.
And as one person said, breast cancer is a disease, not a marketing opportunity! <minor rant over>
I realize how much I've missed hanging out here - but it is hard to keep up! Too much going on! But thanks for letting me drop inevery now and then, and makingme feel welcome. I'm crazy about all of you!!

Boy, I could get used to having every Monday off. It actually seems like a weekend with a 3 day break.
So the ds had his evaluation at Sylvan this morning. He had not bothered to ask what he was going to be doing when he arrived. He was rather surprised to be taking a 2 ½ hour long test for his evaluation. The ex-hubby and I met him when he completed his work, went to lunch and then met with the administrator for over an hour to discuss their findings. Bottom line, he is "up to snuff" enough to be enrolled in one of the Study Skills programs. He will also be doing some extra work on reading comprehension. He will be starting out with two days a week (4 hours), trying to go on his off nights from skate practice. He is going to talk with his boss at work to try and arrange a work schedule with no weekdays, and hopefully just one day on the weekend. Although I'm sure there we're many things that Zach would have rather been doing today, he did keep a pretty positive spirit.
D1, so when are you going to tag along with the dh to the west coast ??? Here you'd be about an hour from my place in Seattle and less than an hour to Kimberly's from Sacramento. And I'd love to pick that man's brain sometime ... what is he thinking ?!?!? Kudos though for atleast saying he'd join you in some counseling (if appropriate) ... I'm thinking yah !!!
BTW, when is your excursion to the Bahama's?
So its beyond bad with all of our sports teams. Our college teams suck, the Seahawks suck, the Mariner's suck, we lost our NBA team, so its down to the WNBA !!!
Trust me I'll be asking about this "twilight sedation" (you crack me up), I chatted with Paula about that yesterday. In fact she should be port free as of today.
I'll let you know how it goes as the Yoga virgin tonight ... I have class at 5:30, and I have already packed my gym bag and Ipod for after work tomorrow. Figure if I'm going to be achy, I may as well really have a reason to complain. Actually the more I have checked out the se's from the Femara, exercise for bone strengthening and massage are at the top of the list for combating it. I should be getting my referral for massage in the mail in a day or two. I think I like Kimberly's idea to just schedule one a week.
Kathy, your eve out sounded like it was awesome. I actually had just read your post last night as I was watching a Tivo'd episode of The View from last week, Robin Roberts was the guest. She certainly seems like a class act.
More fun was had on Sat as well, but Kathy, two young ones, and no camera (or just in need of a new one) ... what's up with that ???
So you being the nurse and stating that you want twilight sedation, I'm all over that one. The nurse at my surgeon's office who put the darn thing in while I had my mast, really blew me off that it was no big deal and they take them out with just a local. I've decided to see a Gen Surgeon here in my home town, and I will be asking her about something with a little more fire power than just a local.
Paula, how are you feeling ... and did we get a ride ?
Deb, wow ... that is a heck of a lot of people ... I sure hope your able to share a pic. The book you mentioned Middle Place, I checked it out on-line at her website, there is good video clip of her reading an excerpt from the book, sounds pretty touching with a bit of humor as well.
Sherry, hopefully we chose the right pill this morning !!! Did the water pill work ???
CHJ, I think I'd pass on the pink vacuum too !!! I had checked out the Pepto thread, yep the market is pretty well saturated, wonder what color they'd use for colorectal cancer ??? Bad joke I know !!!
For your first night abroad in quite some time, you and the dh certainly picked a beautifull place to visit.
Okay, time to start some prep for dinner, which I'll be finishing up after class. Wish me luck ...

Good Evening Sisters
I have MISSED everyone. Sorry I have been away for so long....I was so tried after working then getting rads(33) I would just come home a drop. I am so glad that part is over with.
Co-workers have been GREAT 1/2 way through my rads they surprised me with a Relay For Life Blanket. The day of my last treatment. I come into work last after having treatment there was a cake, card with gift certificate to have a pedicure and all kind of food. The General Manager who by the way is a Retired Corneal in the Army told me I was his hero .
Things on the home front...well well
I had a talk with the husband AGAIN told him I was not happy and he has managed to destroy bit by bit any love I had for him. Over the years with the verbal abuse. His first words was well we can get a divorce I told him I don't want the house he said he would give me 25 thou I said I am not stupid . I know this house would appraise for at least 100 thou. He said I could go live with my mommie. He said we were to old to start out on our own again he 50 I will be 47 next month. He then said he did not want to loose me I was pretty and a good women and he was sorry. I told him it might be too late. What bothers me is I think his first remark should have been He was sorry not that I could move in with my mommie. I am having a difficult time with this.
He yelled and cursed the girls the other night over something really small and silly. They took me in there room and ask how I could have married such a man.
I have started to look further into things..I found out you can go to the court house by packet of divorce papers for 150.00 and file for divorce go in front of a judge.
It will be difficult finally for me..But if I have to I can get a 2nd job...I am taking my time I need to see what kind of medical bills will be coming and try to put a little bit of my pay back to have something to start out on.. Rent is so expensive and I also need to consider my girls even though they are of age will be 20. They are the best..never have had not even one problem with them. Good students Collage Sophomores this year..They would not want to stay here with him I am sure of that..
He did take us out to dinner last weekend..My gf said let him spend some money on you and the girls..
I had a great Sunday df(breast cancer survior)and I went to a Brest Cancer Survior lunch. My onc his staff and my surgeon were there. It reminded me how blessed and lucky I was to have them. Onc is director on onc surgeon is directior of surgery two of the best doctors in my state.\
I tell my self if God brings it to you he will bring you thourgh it....
Take care sorry I vented so much and this is sooooo long...

Carla,
I don't think we've "met", but I'm a WV girl, too. I'm from a holler outside of Charleston, and I now live in Central PA. I have siblings in Scott Depot, St. Albans, Charleston and Clendenin. I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles. You should look up the local free legal office to see if they can help you. I'm so sorry you are dealing with all this stuff on top of your breast cancer diagnosis. Your hubby, unfortunately, sounds like he could be my brother or my cousin. I hope he's not, but my male relatives seem to have the same issues with language, temperament, and respecting their families/other people in general. I hope all this stuff works out okay for you. Your kids sound like, despite everything, they are on the right track. That's awesome!
Hugs

Well I'm no longer the yoga virgin ... and I'm also probably the most un-limber/stiff as a board gal there is. The class totally exceeded my expectations. The instructor has been teaching here locally for many years, her voice was calming, the music appropriate, and the stretches we're just what the doc could have ordered for me. Call me a gushy mess, but as we laid on the floor the last 10 minutes breathing and listening to the lap of ocean waves, I actually had tears running down the side of my face. My hormones (or lack there of), must be totally out of sync. My guess is that I will be feeling some body parts tomorrow morning as well! I'm looking forward to class again on Weds.
Time to eat ... a good night to all, Carol

Well, when I tried to post this last night, the site crashed and wouldn't come back up! I'm still not caught up yet, but will try to get back soon!
Hi Jewels! I've been lurking when I've had time this weekend - we've been so busy around the house I haven't had any time to post! We were off school today so we had a 3-day weekend. We got tons accomplished - mostly outside. We had a beautiful weekend - sunny and low 80's all weekend. We got all six acres mowed and bagged, the pool's cleaned and ready to be covered, and driveway/patios have all been power-washed! My arms are killing me, but I'm satisfied that we got so much done.
It's sure been busy here! I've had lots to read!
Sherry - Wow! You have so much hair!!!When was your last chemo? Mine just seems to be taking forever to grow! It's starting to get a little more wave in the back but I certainly don't have the kind of curl you have! Sorry to hear about your nail woes! That stinks! Keep us posted on your "man" friend - sounds interesting!
Kathy - girl, I don't know how you do it all!! Your night with Robin Roberts sounds really cool! I'm glad you had a good time.
Maz - I'm so glad you checked in! Yippee for good bloodwork results and for getting your port out soon. Hope all goes well!
Therese - What a bummer that Aunt Flo decided to show up for your birthday surprise. Sounds like you had a great celebration despite it, though!
Carla - So good to see you! Your interview was great - thanks for sharing!
Kris - Hope you're cold is better by now. Sinus/allergy issues are bad in our neck of the woods around this time of year - ds and I have both been fighting them over the last week or so.
Paula - sounds like you're burning the candle at both ends, dearie! Remind me again why you're making plans for a sub that's not for you?? LOL on the "all I want for Christmas"!! Very funny!!
Kimberly - thinking of you and your sis all weekend. I'm sure she'll be facing some decisions this week - keep us posted.
D1 - hope you had a great weekend with the girls! No "cheating" on the hair yet, but I do have an appt for a cut and color tomorrow! Can't wait!!
Ok, girls - gotta sign off for now. I need to get some things prepared for tomorrow still and it's about my bedtime! I'll try to check in soon this week. {{{{{HUGS}}}}} to all!

Nothing exciting from me. Got the nip's stitches removed today. Too soon to tell if this one's here to stay or not yet. Tattooing is scheduled for November. Going shopping for ds' b-day tomorrow after I work ½ day and get my next herceptin (3 more after that!).
Sherry: OK, I'm confused... sludge in your stomach?? I thought that could only happen in a gallbladder (but I don't do adults, just kids, so who knows?!). That sounds awful! I hope you get everything straightened out soon.
Deb: Big WooHoo for Little Rock's Walk. You sound tired, but happy.
D1: I hear ya on that remaining 5 lbs post-chemo. The waistband of all my skirts and pants is just a little too tight for my liking. And I think my ass has taken on its own zip code. I gotta do something. My whole body seems to have readjusted, even though I know the scale says only 5 lbs to go. Maybe I should aim for 10...
Hope you had a fun girls' night.
CHJ: I agree, the short hair is easy. I'm still undecided how long I want it to grow. I like how I look with a bob, but this short hair is no-fuss in the mornings!
Carol: Glad you liked yoga. I really loved it when I did it. I used to do that and Pilates each week-was a nice mix.
And the twilight sedation... I say go for it! My PS said many surgeons will take ports out without it, but she likes to use it so the patient isn't uncomfortable and/or moving too much so that she can do a better job. I personally want no part of any pain, or even that tugging sensation I notice when local anesthetics are used... I'm a wuss. And you're only out for the port for like 20 minutes total.
Glad your ds is getting some study skills help. I think they should have a program like that in school (do they??). What kid knows how to study without being shown? I know I had to learn how to do it.
Carla: I am so sorry to read of your continued troubles with dh. But I must say that you sound better and stronger than before. Maybe things are clearer for you now? I do think it speaks volumes that your girls are concerned enough to voice their opinions to you about him. I hate to see anyone get divorced, but I think he is obviously mentally and verbally abusing you (and your daughters!)... and you deserve better! We are here for you always, and I hope you can get strength from us to do whatever it is you decide.
Julie: What a busy weekend you had! Sounds like you earned a massage or at least a pedicure.
OK, I'm off to read the newspaper, then head to bed. TTFN!

Hey Jewels, Just a quick check in. Still wiped out from the RFC but it was worth it.
I hear some of you talking about toenail woes. Anybody still waiting for them to fall off? My big toes look like they are separated from the nail bed but haven't budged as far as falling off. Look ugly as hell but thankfully are not too painful.
Carol - I really enjoyed yoga when I did it too but it really has a lot to do with who leads it and what kind it is. Right now I am looking for a Tai Chi or Chi Quong class. Slow stretching type movements too. Oh, and my work schedule just changed to every other Friday off (jealous yet?)so I can look forward to 3 day weekends every other. And best of all, my Fridays are the ones after Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. Since we already get those days off, I get extra vacation days added for those days. Sure will help me build my time up again.
Kimberly - Hope you and your sis are hanging in there. We are all praying for you.
Carla - It is really rough for you right now. I am hoping you find the strength that you need for you and your girls. Prayers your way that God shows you a way out.
Guess I better get back to work.
Catch ya later!

Hey Guys. Got college girl back to school. As you know, I was SO looking forward to taking her in to vote on Tuesday and then to lunch, but in her 19 ½ year old infinite wisdom, she stayed out till 4:15a Monday night/Tuesday morn, so I was disappointed in her behavior. I told her I didn't feel much like lunch, so we just went in and she voted and I went upstairs and ordered my "O FUBC" license plate and called it a day. We came home and she packed and then we drove back to college (PALady and Vettegal, did you hear my shout outs?).
So today I put the call in to my oncologist to ask for a script for the massage therapy and a referral to a head therapist. Hmmm.
CHJ-a 1.5 mile hike? Hope it was on a trail. I don't mind trail hiking, but that off-trail stuff when you have to battle your way through spider webs is for the birds. (Did I mention that I'm kinda afraid of spiders? It's spiders and needles for me!) I love the Shenandoah, we've done lots of hiking and cabining in the Shenandoah. Looks like your weather was perfect that day. What a great way to get out and celebrate!
Great news on the Sylvan experience, Carol! I hope ds is able to keep up with it. It will be hard to cut back on the work hours, they so love to have some money in their pockets, but priorities have to win out. My dd just quit her job to focus on college apps and to get ready for basketball, so we're going through the financial weaning here, too.
I cannot wait to tag along on a West Coast trip! This was not the one-too many moving parts. I'll get there, keep the faith. (Oh, I leave for Eleuthera on Oct. 25 and return on Nov. 2.)
So you liked the yoga? I'm going to try to see if I can find a flyer on it tomorrow when I'm at the hospital for my p/t. I called a friend who has wanted to do yoga for a couple of years and she's interested in doing it with me. I'll see. It would be great if the yoga and massage help with your se's. Hey, we'll have to start a thread for yoga-fied, massaged noodles!
Oh, Carla, I'm so sorry you're still dealing with a DH. Please take care of yourself and figure out what YOU need. Vent here anytime. We're in your corner.
OMG, Carol, LOL at your "stiff as a board" comment. Get in line behind me, my dear. I'm so impressed you were able to connect. At the conference I attended on Saturday, they had a demo of guided imagery and I found myself drifting off, organizing my "to do" lists. What a loser.
Julie, it sounds like you guys worked hard on your day "off." It's fun to accomplish so much, isn't it? I remember a time, not too long ago, when you were supervising. I'm glad you're in the thick of things and doing okay. How's the new ‘do?
KathyL, you make me LOL. YOUR ass has a new zip code? You're too young for that, girl.
So, Deb, you're working on building up your time off bank? Good for you. Four day weeks every other sounds sweet. You deserve it. Just don't try to cram 5 days' work into those four, okay? As a veteran toenail faller offer, it doesn't hurt. It's just ugly. Keep ‘em really short and maybe you can avoid the whole scene...
I'm psyching up for the final debate. I'm waiting to see some punches. Guess I'll go watch some pundits for a half hour and see what they have to say.
Lata.

Hello Jewels,
D1, sorry to say, but we had to turn the debate off ... watched Tivo'd crud instead. What's worse is that after the presedential debate, there is now a governor debate on .... Its uglier yet!
Sorry to hear that the dd bummed you out for a day you we're looking forward to spending with her. They are still trying to figure it all out, ya think?
Hey, I hope you can find a Yoga class that works into your schedule. I would think that the stretching, and breathing would be an added beni to your regular workouts. I went again tonight, the class was a bit different than Mondays, a few more moves with strength training. Oh, and during the relaxation portion tonight, I was thinking about the porkchops I had left on simmer in the "galley". Man my right side is a weak one! I'll be a work in progress. I'll be packing my workout bag again for after work tomorrow, I hit the treadmill yesterday, so what does your le dr have to say about nautilus type machines? I've heard repetitive motions are not necessarily a good thing for those of us with some missing lymphnodes, so I avoided any upper body work.
The ds is off to Sylvan after school tomorrow, it will be interesting to hear his take on that experience. Big bonus, we're letting him drive to school so he can head straight to Sylvan. He lost that priveledge with the "tatoo" fiasco! Oh how I miss the times when he was Kathy's kids age. Parenting almost seemed easy then.
So a trip to the PNWest is not out of the question. Cool !!!
Deb, gotta like those hours, so do you work 9 hour days for 8 days, then a 8 hour shift, for the day off every other week? We had that opportunity a few years back with the government. BINGO for this years Friday's off during the holidays!!!
Kathy, thanks for the info on the "twilight sedation", I ended up chatting with a gal after Yoga tonight. She's a surgical nurse ... so I had to ask her about having my port removed with just a local anthesia ... she said no way-no how !!!
Good question on the Study Skills being offered at the public school. I know there is quite a bit of tutoring opportunities available, but the ds was so adament about not wanting to participate. We're all trying to figure this whole thing out.
Sorry, but I actually forgot you we're having the re-do on the ol'nipperoooo. Hoping that it will be a done deal after the tat this go around. Man, I can't believe you are down to 3 Hep infusions. Time is flying by!
Julie, holy moly, six acres that you mow and bag ??? I don't know about you, but I personally dislike this time of the year when its time to put the summer fun away (pools and boats). We spent the better part of last weekend winterizing the boat to put away. Kent and I only we're out in it three times. The kids did use it a bit, but hence the dh was mentioning again about selling it (not ... IMO).
So if/when you sell would you be looking for a smaller bit of property? I'm pretty happy on our small city lot, especially when I think of the upkeep to having acreage.
Carla, what wonderful co-workers you have. It's quite an accomplishment to finish up the grind of daily radiation, especially after everything else this past year, and for them to acknowledge what you have been through was quite thoughtful.
Sounds as if you have begun to sort things out in regards to the DH. Taking baby steps in a positive direction for Carla will be good for you as well as your daughters. Young people need to know that this is not how anybody should be treated.
Kimberly, hoping that your getting some quality time to enjoy your company. Shoot, I miss the time you used to be able to spend letting us know what fantastic meals you we're dining on.
Okay, off to bed ... pleasant dreams !!!

Carol, I got the photo collage. Really nice job you did there! Thanks so much for sending it.
Re: repetitive exercise and upper body -- I don't believe it's contraindicated. What they recommend is that you build up slowly if you're sporting a few less nodes than you used to have.
I restarted my weight training at 3 lb on the right (surgery side) and a bit more on the left (unaffected) side. After 2-3 weeks, I increased the weight to 5 lb on the right. Then to 8 lb. Now I'm at 10 lb.
Doing free weights with proper technique is great to rebuild strength, flexibility, and range of motion. I do bicep curls, military press (straight up), tricep extension, bent-over rowing, chest press, and a couple of leg strengtheners (squats and hamstring curls). It has helped my right arm/shoulder strength and flexibility tremendously. And the added benefit is that weight-bearing exercise helps increase bone density. On weight nights (every other night) I do 15 minutes on the treadmill, do half my weight exercises, do another 15 on the treadmill, and finish up with the second half of weight lifts. It's all done in about 40 minutes. Studies show little benefit to doing more than 12 repetitions for building strength. So I do 12 reps for each exercise ... then as I get used to that weight, I do 13, then 14, then 15. When I've done 15 for several sessions, I increase the weight.
The kind of repetitive motion you want to avoid is painting the family room by yourself in one afternoon, or raking the whole yard ... that kind of thing.
-
D1 - Sorry about the let down with dd. Unfortunately, I was kinda like that when I was her age. Guess we all have a learning curve. LOVE the license plate. Why didn't I think of that? I just may have to see if it is available here in AR. Thanks for the info in the toenails. I have been trimming them hoping that the new nail will just replace what I trim off but it sure is slow growing.
. I watched the debate. Again, nothing special to me. Disappointed really by both of them. Why can't someone just come out and say what they will do (and how much it will cost me)instead of what the other won't do. I think both sides have alot to be desired this year. Just MHO.
D1 and Carol - as for the hours, yes, it is 9 hours and then 8 on the friday that you work. And overtime is nonexistent here so it works for me.
LJ13 - Thanks for the info on strength exercises. I printed it out. They kind of scare you about that but I have been wanting to do light weights. Your schedule seems to be a slow and steady one that might work. The last line about painting and raking kinda sounded like you were maybe speaking from personal experience?
Rainy here today and trying to stay awake at work. Still taking meds for the neuropathy. Anyone else still having any problems with that? And did anyone find something that helps with that besides meds? It is really my only side effect that is left (remnants of chemo brain but so much better I can live with it). I have found that as I got further in my treatment plan, my pain threshold plummeted. Before, I could just about handle any pain but now....... Still looking for Tai Chi class. Will work on that tomorrow as I am off and going to be around the house anyway. I did find someone that specializes in Oncology massage though and am planning to call and schedule that as well.
Hope all the Jewels are having a sparkling, bright day!
Catch ya later!
-
Deb, thankfully no, but that's exactly what a lady at my infusion center said one day that she had done. She painted one afternoon and raked the next ... and showed up the following week with a full compression sleeve as a result.
-
Hey LJ, took your insight on the exercise and did a little upper body work tonight after 45 min on the treadmill. I got off the treadmill and did three "machines" at the lowest weight possible for my upper body. I felt like I had a pretty decent workout, then on the way home I almost cracked myself up thinking "WOW ... I walked for 45 minutes" ... after the training walks for the 3 Day it really was no big deal although after a month of being pretty much a couch potato I felt whooped! How the heck did I do back to back 15 to 20 mile walks during radiation. I guess its all in the mind set.
My muscles we're a bit tired from Yoga last night, but it was the "good hurt"! Hoping to golf one day this weekend, its supposed to hit a high of maybe 60 on Sat. Whooo Hoooo !!! Okay, thats my exercise routine for the week, like I need to make the announcement !!! I'll be more than happy to leave the painting to somebody else !!!
Deb, lucky gal with the work schedule, I actually opted not to do that schedule for many years as I wanted to be home when my son got home from school, now that he is old enough to handle himself (I hope anyway), they no longer offer that option. I hate to say it, but last year when I was taking much needed sick leave and we also had a couple of guys retire, and our shop was very short handed, the boss said no more ... straight eights for everyone. We just brought up the option again to him and unfortunately it was shot down.
Back to watching some Tivo'd stuff ... looks like dinner solo again tonight, the dh has been working some god awlful hours this past week. Between the commute and work it ends up being a 14 hour day...Yuckers.
So my fellow Jewels, remind me if you would, anybody else on a AI ??? I know there are a few on Tamoxifan, but how but Femara or Arimidex? Would love to compare notes, I'm still hopeful that some of my aches and pains will subside.
Off to flip the chicken on the bar'b ... Carol
-
Carol - I have been on Arimidex since May. I can't say I have aches and pains, except for my plantar fascitis (heel spur) that is acting up for the first time in 15 years. I've been poking around the internet (the source of all true information) and I have found some sites that link plantar fascitis with Arimidex. Something about the lack of estrogen making the tendons less elastic or something. I'm seeing a podiatrist, and will get a night splint and new orthodics today. Hope it helps. I also have some stretching exercises to do.
In addition to the foot problems, I do have hot flashes, and I wake up drenched in the night sometimes. I don't have them all that much during the day. My oncologist, on my 3-month visit, asked me if I had hot flashes, and I told him about getting soaked in the night, and he basically said, well, that's nice and moved on to the next topic. (I am changing oncologists for sure, I really am!!)
Anyway, I'm hoping I get away with nothing worse than that with the Arimidex. Hope yours gets better also!
Forgive me if I missed or forgot about this discussion - I know SisKimberly had the genetic testing, but did anyone else? I had the "counseling" session (advantages, disadvantages, that discussion) and I'm still not convinced I need to do it. They can't seem to tell me if insurance fully covers it or not. I'm not sure I want to know, but if I did have the gene, I'd have my ovaries out immediately. What the heck, I've already been through menopause and the Arimidex is knocking out any remaining estrogen anyway. So I still have that decision to make.
Next on my agenda - finish up a root canal (next week) and my routine colonoscopy. Does the fun never end??
Race for the Cure on Sunday! It's supposed to be pretty chilly (especially early in the morning) but I'll be there. And I might even wear pink!
Happy Friday everyone!
CHJ
-
CHJ- I did have the BRCA testing done. I was unsure of my fathers family medical history. He and my mother divorced when I was 2 and chose not to have anything to do with my brother and I. I am blessed to say it was neg.If it would have been post. I would have chosen to have a mast and ovaries removed. About the insurance I had the blood draw it was sent to be tested. I had to wait until my insurance company respond to what they would pay. After this I received a call from company telling me among I may be billed and ask if I still wanted the testing done. I too have to go to detist on the 31st. I had a tooth break while having chemo and need to see what needs to be done...
Last night I used my gift certificate and had my pedi and also decedied to have manacure. It was nice. Me and a gf are going to a benefit disco /dinner dance tonight.
I also want to look into yoga.I need to start back on tredmill and try to build my strength back up.
Have a great Friday
Carla

CHJ, I still haven't decided if I'm going to do Komen. The thought of getting up that early and dealing with the traffic in Hunt Valley ....
If I go, I'll look for you. Make sure you wear the pink shirt so I recognize you.
-
LOL, LJ!! I know what you mean about the early hour and the traffic. It's 45 minutes to get there from where I live, too. I didn't go last year, but heard it was a nightmare. Supposedly they worked out some of the "kinks" as far as the logistics. Guess we'll see. I heard 33,000 were expected.
Yes, look for me - I'll have the pink shirt and the short hair. Shouldn't be hard to find!!
CHJ
-
Okay, I was just going to read through the comments, but I can't stop myself! I HAVE to chirp in! (Besides, I was just going to head into the garage and get down my homemade gravestones for Halloween and do the repairs that are needed each year before we put it up again-OMG, they are SO fun. We have names like "C.U. Laytor," "Anita Coffen," and "Yuri Goner." Much better than the ones you buy and we've used the same graveyard for, hmmm, this is our 15th year!)
Anyhoo. Carol, did you manage to stick around to hear the only good line in the whole debate? When McCain said if Obama wanted to run against George W. Bush, then he should have run four years ago. Oh schnap!!!!!! The rest of it was watching McCain trying to get under Obama's skin and Obama trying to look presidential. Not one of the better debates, IMO. I'm all ready to vote, tho (I have a couple of hot issues that are important to me-Supreme Court appointments being my biggie-so it's relatively easy for me to figure out my candidate based on those few things), the debates were not going to change anything for me. I was just watching for sport.
Oh, college girl. Yes, she's trying to figure it out, that's for sure. She called me today between classes to complain about the amount of money the sorority life is costing her. I didn't bite. I told her she'll really be motivated to get a job over winter break! (Mean ‘ol mom!) I know, I should be more understanding as she seems to be keeping the academics under control, but that's what she's there for! I told her to invite her grandparents up to take her out to dinner, they'll probably slip her a $20 (not that it would go far...).
I picked up info on yoga today. Looks like this "round" of classes all started mid-September and won't be done till mid-December (these are the ones through the county-price is right). I'll bet they won't start another round till after the first of the year. I am going to call the rec center that holds the classes and see if I can sit in on a couple to figure out which one is right for me. There were probably four in the course book that sounded like beginner level. So at least I'm starting on that project.
I'm probably not the right one to ask about weight-bearing, Carol. While I did some lifting (perhaps I should put that in quotes-I never used a lot of poundage. I think even at my peak I was only using 12 lb free weights), before, because of my rotator cuff injury, I've been side-lined. My p/t does have me using the bands and my surgeon did observe that my back has good def...I attribute that totally to the band exercises I'm doing. In fact, I have 2 p/t sessions left next week and we're putting together a workout routine designed to keep my rotator cuffs happy and still give me some strength training, so I may not ever go back to the machines. (I will miss them...) That said, some type of strength training is critical. You, in particular, should be interested as the AI will leech your bone density and the strength training will help you combat that. I'm not sure what kind of routine you should do, but if you have free weights, some curls for your biceps (start low and work your way up-I mean, start at like 3 lbs), light weights at your sides with your shoulder blades pushed together and pelvis tucked and lift your arms straight out to the sides for 10, then straight forward for 10, then repeat (don't lift your arms up higher than your shoulders), um, heavier weights held at your sides and "walk" 10-15 steps one direction lunging so your back knee almost touches the floor with each step. Reps are more important than pounds. My descriptions are lame. Sorry. But if you can figure out what I mean, at least it's a start.
Hope Sylvan was okay. I know what you mean about 5 and 3 year olds. I loved it then because I still walked on water...
I saw that about Julie's 6 acres, too! That's a lot of grass clippings, Julie!
Oh, there's LJ with some weight ideas. And she's right, the le is a risk with repetitive stuff. I'm supposed to break up my lifting routines, much like LJ describes, but I just alternate lower strengthening and then upper strengthening to keep from doing too much at once. And I agree, once you can do 15 reps 2x comfortably, then increase the weight and then move back to 8 reps and work your way up to 15 again. Once you get to 10-12 pounds, though, I think I'd stick there.
Sounds like you had a similar reaction to the debate, Deb. There must be a reason that campaign after campaign we get these same debates where you don't learn too much about the candidates. Maybe we Americans are dumber than we think we are and the handlers know just how to feed us our information... (Try Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert-they've got the issues! Jk-although I watch regularly. Sunday talk shows are pretty good for filling in some of the details.)
Not dealing with much neuropathy anymore-well, the tips of my toes are still numb, but it doesn't seem to bother me too much. So I can't help you there.
Hey, if you want the FUBC license plate-go for it! It'd be great to know that my sister in Arkansas is "driving" the same message home!
Carol, you hit the nail on the head. (I'm so full of puns today!) Your mind was in game mode when you were training for your 3day. Now just wrap your head around your new regimen and be as committed to that.
OMG, CHJ! I think our oncs are related! I told him about the nightly drenchings (I get them during the day, sometimes, too) and he just blew them off. He did suggest that I take vit e and oil of evening primrose 2x a day to help the hot flashes, but I'm not convinced it's doing anything.
I did the BRCA1&2 testing this fall. I probably wouldn't have done it, but I'm participating in all of these studies at Georgetown and one of them deals with genetic counseling/testing. Since I've met my deductible for the year, I figured, why not? All my stuff came back negative, but I'm hoping that doesn't change my level of care going forward. I guess it's a good thing for my daughters that I'm negative, but from what I understand, it doesn't much help my sisters. About the only thing that would have come out of being positive is the whole ovary thing, but I'm not sure what I would have done about it.
The testing's got to be easier than a root canal/colonoscopy... (you've got it coming and going, don't you!)
Carla-mani/pedi, good for you! (I've become such a sucker for that girlie stuff.) And so many of us looking in to yoga!
LJ/CHJ-you guys crack me up with your Komen planning!
Okay, off to check on the graveyard...
