Thanks Dawn,  hope we get a crowd.   i will try to remember name tags.   Got the pink table cloth and magic markers to doodle.

Welcome Lisa.  I have my tx at Georgetown Univ Hospital, Lombardi Cancer Center and I am very pleased with my team of doctors.   I use Metro Access, which is a curb to curb transportation service and cost is $ 2.50 each way.   Have to have Dr fill out application - online at Metro DC website.   I can drive myself there, but have had 3 mini reactions so driving home is not a good idea and then benydryl makes me sleepy at first, then steroids kick in and I am wired.

I live in Alexandria, moved here  2 years ago from Pittsburgh since my one and only son lives here and I am a widow.  Sold my house after being there 36 years and rent an apartment.

I put notices for our meeting on bulletin board at the chemo sign in area, so maybe a couple of others will join us.   Have a wonderful weekend.  HUGS,  Nancy

Nancy, 62, moved from Pittsburgh to Virginia 2 years ago to be closer to my one and only son, who was married 3 weeks after my dx of IDC in May.   Widow extraordinaire - 5 1/2 years.   Yesterday would have been 39 yrs of marriage.

Have done DD A/C, now on week # 10 of 12  taxol/herceptin - pre surgery.  Surgical consult will be in November and most likely a lumpectomy as the tumor is shrunk 75%.

Hobbies:   bridge, bingo, plastic canvas crafts (mostly water bottle covers).  Have travelled extensively - rode an elephant up a mountain many years ago in India.

Dawn - Hope you can have the port taken out - that would be great news!

Nancy - I've never seen plastic canvas water bottle covers?  I used to do plastic canvas years ago.

    About me -

Monique, 50, married 6 years.  I have four children - Danielle 25, Lara 22, Eric 20 and my surprise child Makenzie 6 :).   I also have two stepsons Ron 23 and Chris 21.

Had mast. July 7th.  Reconstruction is in process with expander.  I am halfway through chemo.  October 21st will be tx # 4 of TAC.  Can't wait till this part is over.  I don't know how people can work through chemo?  At the same time I am incredibly bored and can' wait to get back to work.

    Hi.

I wanted to let all of you ladies know that there is a free workshop and class in the Ashburn Area - Yoga for Breast Cancer.  The teacher is a practicing yoga teacher, and a breast cancer survivor.

this is a free class and opportunity to meet others.  Yoga provides breathing techniques to assist in healing the body and mind as well as gentle to moderate stretches of the muscles affected by surgery.  I dont mean to advertise, but I thought some may find value in it.

It is being held at  "bridge to learning family yoga" studio in ashburn on the 18th at 1.

    Hi Lisa,

I'm being treated in Reston.  I spoke with the radiation oncology and they said though most people get the tattoos, there are options to not have them.  I've heard they are hardly noticeable, but for some reason, it has really troubled me.  All I have had so far is 3 rounds of AC.  My last one will be on Friday.  Then I start Taxol.  Surgery and Radiation are on the horizon, but no dates yet.

My mom still doesn't know, but is coming for a visit this weekend.  I'm going to send her a letter, as I think that will be best for her.  Should be interesting!

I recently went to one of the Look Good Feel Better makeover seminars sponsored by ACS in the NoVA area.  It was really a lot of fun.  I highly recommend it if you haven't had a chance to attend.

    Hi Dawn,

I will probably go to Reston since it is minutes from my house, but I'm not sure exactly when.  I'm still in chemo, so sometime after that, but maybe even after my surgery.  I just asked about the tattoo thing, as I was going to the Look Good Feel Better class which is hosted in the Radiation Therapy dept of Reston.  I was glad to know there were options to doing tattoos.  The Look Good Feel Better class for me last night wasn't so good.  The makeup people were not ther (knew that before I went, she is trying to reschedule that part), but ACS was going to be there with wigs.  Guess what??  They only had one brown wig, and it was very sad.  They had a million gray, blond, red, black, etc, some curly, some straight, some long, some short.  But only that sad little one in brown.  For some reason, it really hurt my feelings that there just wasn't anything for me, so I started to cry.  Again, I'm not sure why it affected me so much.  Of course, everyone tried to get me to take a different color, etc, but I didn't want to take something that I knew was wrong for me, that may be the perfect wig for someone else.  I just left.  Oh well, maybe when the cosmetics folks come back, it will actually be better.  The other women had much more luck.  The ACS person said she should be getting more wigs sometime in November.  If you are going to be looking for brown in the Vienna ACS, just a heads up, that the pickings are not very good.

Gearing up for my LAST AC on Friday!  I think I just may be able to get through it!

Colleen - I had my radiation at Reston Hospital - my plastic surgeon, Wendy Gottlieb, is there as well.  The techs and doctors are awesome!  The doctor that did mine left right as mine was ending to head up a center in Delaware but comes back every month or so for follow-ups.  I did the Look Good, Feel Better class there too.  I was pro-active, did the class before I even started chemo.  It was a little shocking for me at the time - I was the only one who didn't pull off a wig and share my bald head!  It was a fun class and the participants shared so much with the "newbie"!  We weren't given wigs, just a bag full of products. I ended up only doing scarves and a turban or two instead.

Good luck with your last AC - I was antsy with mine, DH had to practically hold me down cuz I knew how crappy I was going to feel but I behaved and didn't run out the door! Laughing

Good luck with your mom this weekend as well.  If you are feeling up to it - please join us at Tysons!

I attended the Look Good program at Georgetown.  The make up people were great.   They asked me if I would be willing to participate in the new video being made.   On July 27 I was one of 8 women who were filmed before and after and during a cosmetic make over and wig/hat/scarf presentations.   The video has not been released yet, and the website will have our pictures - I am told.   The bag of cosmetics given are very high end and not just samples.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you.   And checking out eyebrow stencils at Sephora.   I may claim I am not all that "vain", but no eyebrows is still scary for me when Iook in the mirror.

OK, my doctor says we may do surgery next instead of starting Taxol right away.  For those of you that had surgery first, can you tell me who you used and if you do/do not recommend them?

I have my surgery consult on Nov 6 with Cosilovo at Georgetown Univ Hospital.   She seemed quite good when I saw her before I began chemo.  Told me the chemo before works much better than surgery first and it has shrunk the tumor drastically.

Lefty - what chemo have you had so far? I've only had AC, and thought it will be AC and Taxol first, but now I see that it depends on how much AC has shrunk the tumor. I can't feel the tumor anymore, so I think I'm going to be head to surgery.

Sorry I wasn't able to meet, but my AC yesterday has me glued to the bed. I wish I had the no sleep side effect, but all I get is sleep beyond belief!  I hope you all had a great time!

My tumor is down 75%.  We had a good meet up.  Rest is good.  body and mind heal when sleeping.
