    Welcome to the boards, umaprakash!

If her breast cancer happened before menopause, or especially before the age of 40, then she would be more at risk of having a herititary breast cancer.  No one would know for sure, though, until she underwent genetic testing.  Usually they require at least 2 relatives to have breast or ovarian cancer before they suspect a hereditary cause.  Only about 10% of breast cancers are thought to be hereditary.

I am no expert, but I have read some posts that say that many women can live for years with bone metastases.  You may want to check down to the 'Recurrance and mets' forum, about 18 forums down from this one.

    Thinking of you!

Did her sisters, mother, or aunts develop breast or ovarian cancer too? And how many of the same relatives did not have these cancers?

One b c at 55 would be too weak family history to suspect anything hereditary. But if you have more relatives with cancer, then the odds would increase. And vice versa, if you have many relatives without it, the odds of something hereditary would decrease.

Also, the prevalence of three of the gene modifications is much higher in Jews of Askhenazic descent.  In that case, even with one relative with bc, you might want to get the test. I don't have any relatives with bc (that I know of), but my doctor said I could get the test because I have breast cancer.
