Haunted Houses
Does anybody have any good haunted houses near them with Halloween coming. I want to travel to Louisville, KY next month and try to go into the Waverly Sanatorium. It was an old hospital in the early 1900's for Tuberculosis. Alot of people died there and it was pretty gruesome some of the stuff that went on in there. Numerous paranormal societies have investigated this place and found evidence of ghosts. I think this would be an awesome place to visit in the dark. Maybe it will scare the cancer right out of me!!!! Share your best haunted houses with the season approaches!

I forgot to put the link with the story of this place. Page down on this site to see the history. http://www.louisvilleghs.com/LGHS_MASTER/SUB/Investigations/Waverly/Waverly_Hills_Sanatorium.html

You are braver than me!!!! (in more ways than one). I can't do the scary stuff. Sticks in my brain far too long!
-
I've gotten into this stuff lately and thinks it's really cool. My daughter, DIL and myself are going to try and hit that sanitorium next month. They also have a haunted morgue in Louisville also. I figure if we go down on a weekend might as well do both!

We have Ressurection Mary here in Chicago. Dont have time now, but its a great story. Supposed to be true also.

I love Halloween and haunted houses! The one you want to visit sounds great!! I love thrills. I believe I heard something about the place you're talking about. I wish I could go!! We have a few around here. Some co-workers and I plan on going to a haunted house about an hour away. We went last year and had a lot of fun. I hope you have a good time!
Badboob, spooky stories sound great! Let's get it started!

I finally found the right link for waverly http://www.therealwaverlyhills.com/home.htm Right now we have a group of 4 and recruiting, we are planning on going for a 4 hour stay at the haunted building. If you go on the 2 hour tour you cannot take pictures or recorders and anything! The tour is $20, if you pay $50 for 4 hours you can stay at the hospital from 9 to 11 and record, take pictures whatever you want. You get the run of the whole place. I know I will be scared stiff but this just looks like too much fun!

LuAnn, since you live in Ohio I know you must have heard of Athens insane asylum, its closed now but I was in it when it was open to the public and had residents still in it. My grandfather was in it until his death in 1962, and my mother wanted to know why he had been hospitalized. He had a lobotomy years before his death, she never found out why he was placed in the hospital. The part of the building where his records were was burned down many years before. All that was left was one photo of him and his grave number. We had a hard time finding it because most of them are just numbers, I'll tell you I was never so glad to leave a place in my life. I don't know if it is haunted or not but you can feel death all around you
I have been to Athens since then and drove by but never stopped again.

I don't live near athens and never heard of this. I will read through these links but it looks really cool. I just recently got into this ghost stuff and find it fascinating. I had a few experiences as a child that I will never forget.
I was 11 and our upstairs had 3 bedrooms and a bath. As you came up the steps you could see the master bedroom, turned to the left 180 degrees and go down the hall, two bedrooms on the right and the hall ends into the bathroom. My bedroom was next to the bathroom. I always would rearrange my room and this point in time my bed faced my door and I always slept with my door open. Keep in mind this was an old house with radiators, huge closets built into the walls, was probably built in the early 1900's. Anyway, something woke me up and I saw this dark figure of a man going into the bathroom, he had on a black trenchcoat and a hat with his head kind of bowed down. I hollered out who is in the bathroom and no one answered. I yelled again with no answer, I got up and went into the bathroom (mind you the bathroom is not very big with no closets) and I looked around and no one was there! I know someone walked in there but they were gone! I found out after I got up in the morning that my father was put in the hospital that night with congestive heart failure, they actually lost him once but revived him. All this was happening when I saw this figure. My brother had beads hanging in his doorway, not sure if you all remember those beaded doorway hangings from the 70's, but anyway he would be in his bed and you could see someone walking in the room through the beads yet no one came in. He ripped those buggars down and never put them up again. I hated that house, would never stay in it alone even when I was 18! I was so happy when my mom moved out of that place, it was just something in that house that scared the crap out of me!

I'm staying in the Lizzie Borden house http://www.lizzie-borden.com/ on thursday night. I've wanted to do this for about 12 years, since I knew the murder site had become a bed and breakfast. I remember seeing the movie with Elizabeth Montgomery back in the 70s when I was a kid and I've been fascinated ever since. I've probably read every nonfiction book ever written on the topic so I'm really excited. I'm staying in Lizzie's old room, it's not where any of the murders happened so there is less ghost activity there, which is fine with me. They give a tour in the dark to all the people staying in the house. I'm really looking forward to it.

OOOOOOOOOOOH...Amy! Please be sure to tell us all about it. I remember that movie with Elizabeth Montgomery. Too creepy.
I don't have any really creepy stories to tell except maybe...my dad leased office space that had been the city morgue in the 1800's to early 1900's. Everyone in the office claimed there was a ghost...strange noises, things being rearranged, etc. The truly creepy part about it was the basement. It had stone walls and drains in the floor...for blood! There was still the remnant of a chute where they would drop the bodies down from the main floor to the basement. I only went in that basement once...and didn't stay long when I did!
-
Amy, I sent you a PM back, that sounds really cool! I know Gettysburg has a pretty big history and paranormal activity. There is a rock famous for pictures not turning out. My brother had lived out there at the time and he told us the story about the rock how people will take pictures there and they don't turn out. Sure enough I was at the bottom and my husband was on top of the rock with all the kids and in the photo all I got was a picture of the rock with no people in it. This was in the era before digital cameras so I have no clue what on earth happened on that one.
Diane, that is too weird having your office in an old morgue! The drains for blood YUK!!!

Not sure where you are, bab boob, but I can have someone else in the room for the same price with me that night,. I asked Luann but she's already going away somewhere else. I'm meeting up with my family later on friday, but I'm going to try to do Salem Friday morning.
-
Oh, Amy! I'm way down in NC. I can tell you I'd jump right on it if I were closer! I don't know what it is about the Lizzie Borden thing, but I also have had some weird fascination with it. I saw a show on the Discovery Channel (or something similar) not too long ago where they re-examined the evidence. They made a compelling case for Lizzie NOT being the murderer.
Are they going to allow you to take photos/audio recordings? I'm not sure if I believe the hocus-pocus of EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena), but it sure would be neat to see if you could capture something!
Enjoy yourself...and please be sure to tell us all about it!
(((HUGS)))

I was out reading on the lizzie borden story last night because I honestly didn't know much about it. they sure didn't do alot of investigating back then like they do now. I didn't read it all but enough to know she was the main focus of the investigation from the get to. Then the housekeeper being sent back to her home country, just alot of what ifs. Please tape record and video record while you are sleeping. I think that is my biggest thing I want to get one of these EVP's on my own to really believe in them.
-
badboob- there is something so fascinating about the case. I went through a phase about 6 years ago when I read everything on the topic. I even saw a Lizzie Borden Opera on PBS. I'm not an opera person but I figured that would be one I could get into.
luann- lol tape record and video record me sleeping, LOL, I asked the owner of the house/museum if picture taking was allowed and she encouraged it, saying I maybe I would see something that wasn't visible to the eye. If you're really interested in the case there are different books written from different historians' perspective about other suspects including Lizzie's sister, uncle and the maid.
I'm not sure how much I believe or don't believe-- sometimes I think a lot, sometimes I think not.
-
you don't focus the camera on you but the general room Amy. Pupose is to catch things going on around you while you are asleeep....of course that is if you sleep LOL. What about the Stanley Hotel where they filmed "the shining" that would be a awesome placde to be also. I have heard alot of spooky stuff about that place!
-
You guys are braver than I am, I would never spend the night in any of those places. My daughter has always wanted to see the Winchester House, she studied about it in the 5th grade and has been fascinated by it every since.

They do a haunted tour of Lenoir that goes to several locations Downtown where strange unexplained things have happened. One of the stops is the old police station where someone hung himself while in police custody many years ago. The organizers always stage the areas with props and a couple of years ago they had the jail cell staged one way and when they came through with one group of the tour, the props were rearranged, the door is locked between groups and they don't know how the props were moved.
We also have the Brown Mountain Lights that appear and move on one of the local mountains and they are totally unexplained also. Here is a link to the Brown Mountain Lights. http://www.westernncattractions.com/BMLights.htm

since moving here to NC, I don't know where the haunted houses are, but I'll do some research, for sure.
In Maryland, let's see,... there are some pretty scary places. For starters, there's Edgar Allen Poe's gravesite, which I believe that every year, on Halloween, or on the anniversary of his death, I can't remember, some ghost stops by and leaves flowers and/or a bottle of (I forget if it's wine or champagne?). Don't know how spooky that is, but I would like to see who is leaving those presents...
In Antietem, the site of some very bloody Civil War battles, there is at least one bed & breakfast where it's reported that if you stay in the 'honeymoon suite', you will see some spooky things. Lots of men lost their lives there in Antietem.
I know there are more, but I just can't think of them right now.
This is really neat! Diane, whereabouts do you live, in NC? I live in the S.E. corner of NC, and I'm only about 3 miles from the NC/SC border, so I'm near Myrtle Beach. Wilmington is just about an hour's drive away. Sheila, I think you mentioned where you live also... are you near Hickory??
I would LOVE to go to some haunted houses to see if anything spooky happens.

I could bring my video camera but I'm already carrying way too much stuff and I don't have (hopefully) 8 hrs to catch tape. You know way more about ghosts than me.

My daughter called this morning, I must be spooking her with all this but she said she thought she heard her roommate wake up and get out of her bunk last night and then felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned around and no one was there. She kind of shook it off and looked around and said there was a cold spot around her bed. The in the morning when she came back from her shower she said it looked like someone got out of her bed and left. I told her that she should quit bugging ghosts in her sleep and she cracked up and corrected me to say that her roommate is the one that chased the ghost out of her bed. She did some checking and has heard of some weird things that have happened in the wing of the dorms she lives in. She was super excited about it and thought it was the neatest thing. I am a bad influence LOL

Harley, I live in Lenoir just north of Hickory. I have been to Tom Dooley's (Dula) grave site on the Yadkin River just East of Wilksboro. I went with my son's 3rd grade class on a field trip and the stories we heard that day. They say that some spooky things happened after the hanging of Tom Dooley (Dula) at his parents house. Yes, the song 'Tom Dooley' is about a real person who lived in Wilkes County but his name was actually Tom Dula but pronunced dooley. There is a group in Wilksboro who put on a play every year about what happened and who really killed Laura. http://www.davidholt.com/photos/tomdula.html

My daughter and I went around her college campus this past weekend ghost hunting. She had an odd experience and many other students have had similar things happen. We took a tape recorder and had some recorder sessions. As we were walking down on of the halls with the admin offices in it (now mind you it was very dark and spooky in these halls and I didn't know she was recording), we were talking about where we were heading and then left the building. When we went back and listened to the recording we heard a voice as we were walking down the hallway to "get out, you don't belong here" and then as we were going through a door it said "shhh, you are being too noisy". Talk about freaky! I haven't closely listened to all the tapes we made yet, just had a quick listen after we did the session. Were not sure what to do with what we found but it was really spooky and strange.

I am heading to Universal Studios(Fright Night) week after next with the family. I had my lumpectory on the second of October and doctor said I could go if I was careful. I will do the Mammosite when I return. Got to go find me a Holloween shirt to wear so I can freak out my daughter who will meet us there.
-
isn't that the one that is haunted, charlie chaplins old studio???
-
LuAnn!!!!!!!!! that is soooooooo freaky!

My daughter is having a friend come up to her dorm tonight to spend the night and they are going ghost hunting again on campus. Guess I will find out how it went tomorrow. I just hope she doesn't spook herself too badly again. Last week she had trouble sleeping because she thought someone was watching her. After our evening on that campus I can see why! It was kind of amazing the spookiest place on the whole campus was right outside the chapel. I can't explain it but the room was darker than most rooms and the lights inside the chapel looked kind of eerie. We all felt odd in this room outside of it and one of the people felt like someone was pushing on his chest. It was the wierdest feeling I ever felt. When we went back to listen to that tape we could hear a very strange sound like it was moaning in that area. I wouldn't expect anything like that next to a chapel
