    Skye - I have been taking 2 x 500 mg. of cranberry tablets/day for months - I guess I could up it to 3 or  4 x/day.

Jan - Yikes, that gas shortage sounds awful - and don't you have to drive your DDs to school about 30 minutes away each day?

What a mess with the stock market and bail out - I just called my broker, it's not as bad up here, the Canadian government and banks are much stricter with mortgages.  I hope everyone is okay.

The gas shortage is just a mess. There is one station near me that has gas today, but the lines are unbelievably long. DH is working from home today b/c his car is almost out of gas. Luckily, I generally keep mine over half a tank, so I'm OK for now. But, yes, it's a 30 min. drive to pick up the kids. My neighbor and I have been strategic (as always) in our carpooling to minimize how much we each drive. I'm probably OK through the weekend, so hopefully the situation will improve by Monday. I heard on the news this morning that bus ridership is up :)

    Hi Everyone,

I'm doing really well this week. Sorry to hear that some of you had some scares. I hope you'll be doing better soon. About 2 weeks ago my Yoga/water aerobics teacher gave me some exercises to do at home between the regular Yoga class on Sunday morning. I did them last week on Tuesday and Thursday and again this week. I think it will really help my back. The pain is still there, but it isn't as severe. Anything is better than taking Hydrocodone all the time. One pill of that a day for only a day or two had me messed up for about a week.

Mary, sorry your son doesn't have the power back yet. A girl I know got her power back last Saturday, but she'd been told different things at different times. Once they told her it might be Oct 6, but she was lucky to get it back 2 days before even the soonest time she'd heard.

Jan, I hope your gas shortage clears up soon. Just before Ike my neighbor (up in Dallas at the time) heard there was one here in Austin, but it didn't happen. Our prices have even dropped slightly this week. Who knows how long that will last.

Caya, my hubby has spent this past week stressing out over the the situation with banks. Luckily he sold his mutual funds accounts in January before the bottom dropped out, but he wanted to make sure all our bank accounts were insured. I think we finally managed to fix it all yesterday. I've never heard him mumble quite that much.

    Take care all of you.

The good news is power is back on for my son.  Told him he better put some money in the collection basket at church on Sunday in thanksgiving.  He's really happy and so is his cat.  So sorry about the gas shortage.  It's incredible to me that a gas line could go from Texas to NC, so that's how much I know about things, duh.  The bank thing is scary...afraid to look at my 401 K which is modestly conservative.  Good to hear from you Debbie.  My ortho dr suggested swimming...might give it a try.  Really looking forward to the weekend.  Hugs

I found this on the reaccurance thread and knew you girls would want to know.

My prayers go out to Joni,

    Nancy

I just got a PM from Joni (Jonimb from Alberta, Canada).  I am so sorry to tell you she has been in hospital for the past 10 days.  Her liver is failing and is she feeling very sick.

Please send our your prayers and good thoughts for a turnaround.  She has been a good friend to all here esp those of us with liver mets.  I will be praying hard for her liver to kick in and start working again.

Oh, Bernice, thank you so much for letting us know about Joni.  I'm so sorry to hear she's feeling so bad.  I am wishing her all the best to bounce back from this episode.  She has so many plans and I want her to feel good and to get on with them.  She was so great in Las Vegas...  like a spring chicken, getting all around town w/no problem.  It scares me that you can go from feeling like that to her current state so fast...  really stinks.  Joni, if you see this, rest up and get well soon!  We miss you.

Jan, cannot believe the gas lines.  I was blown away by what you wrote...no gas for TEN days?  What country are we living in?  OMG!  And Mary, your son STILL without power?  Unreal.  We need to stop spending over in the middle east and straighten out our own sh*t around here.  Crazy country this has become.  Debbie, I hear you on making sure you don't have all your chickens in one bank.  I need to divvy it up so if one of my banks should fail, I don't lose.  As it is, I have accts. with Washington Mutual and Merrill Lynch.

Caya, Rebecca, Happy Rosh Hashanah!  Enjoy your festivities.  I will live vicariously from hearing about all the fun.  Lynn, hope you're feeling better this week...  that trip seems a little soon for what you've been through.

OK...gotta go watch Obama and McCain.  XOXO all!  Esp. to Joni!

    Hi  all,

I am sorry I haven't checked in lately. We spent the week traveling. first we visited Meri and bf and then we took our time driving back, stopping in Gettysburg for a couple of nights. Tomorrow morning I am leaving for Rockville, Maryland until next Thursday for Rosh Hashanah. My sil invites around 30 friends and extended families. It is a lot of work for her, so I try to help out. I will be flying down with my mom and Meri will also be able to drive up for the big event on Tuesday night.

Ed's tests came back all negative---whew!!!!

    Lynn,

I am glad you are feeling a bit better. It was all a blur when we were in the recovery room. We were both drugged- but it was nice seeing you and George there. What a scary experience you had!! I am so glad you went to the local ER.

La Shana Tovah to Caya and Rebecca.

I will try to catch up while I am at my brother and sil's house this week.

    GrammyNancy,

Thanks so much for letting us know about Joni. We all love her so much.

    Joni,

I am sending my prayers to you and tons of positive vibes. I know you can beat this- you have to. You have so much strength and a tremendous positive attitude. We are all rooting for you. Hugs to you.

    Love to all of you.

Happy Rosh Hashanah to you too, Viddie.  Sounds like a very busy couple of weeks you've been having.  Glad Ed's tests went well.

I am doing the happy dance...all soccer fields are closed due to rain.  Otherwise it would have been one of those insane days driving all over Loudoun County...  I do still have to take Jaclyn at 9:30 for team pictures.  Tonight at 6 we are taking about 7 girls out to dinner at Red Robin for her 8th birthday, coming back here for cake and a movie (Another Cinderella Story) sleepover.  I've got all the requisite junk food...chips, cheetos, m & m's...  I have the dining room all done up in luau decorations.  Goodie bags are done and now all I need to do is paint a dozen terra cotta pots orange, as a basecoat.  The girls will paint on a white and yellow stripe so it looks like a candy corn.  Then we will use floral tape to secure sunflowers onto pens.  You pour candy corn into the pot so the pen will stand up.  That's the little party activity we are doing.  Will the fun ever end????  :)

Joni, you are amazing to be able to write us from the hospital. We are glad for every little crumb you can send us. In my mind, you're still zipping down the Vegas Strip with Lynn hanging onto the side. I'm holding that bright and happy image of you in my memory, and sending all my prayers and love. Hope you are wearing your funny socks. Write us whenever you're strong enough.

Vinnie, so glad to hear Ed's test results were negative, and that you got to spend time in Gettysburg. That is where I wanted to go last weekend but it didn't work out. We did see the new WWII memorial in D.C., and it's awesome.

Tina good luck with the sleepover. What an adorable activity you are doing with the girls! Happy birthday to Jac.

Caya, I don't think the extra cranberry can hurt you. Seems like your doc should be able to figure something better out for you. Hope it doesn't interfere with your celebrations, happy Rosh Hoshana to you and Viddie and Rebecca.

I did get out to the roadside stand to buy a bale of straw, pumpkins, local honey and fresh-picked apples. It is the most gorgeous autumn day ever, I keep making excuses to go outside and enjoy it. I already stacked the pumpkins on the straw around a big black cat sign thing, now I need to find some mums. Joni, I wish I could teleport one of those beautiful apples to you there in Canada.

They make me forget about the financial crisis and all the other stuff going on in the world. I just hope Congress can get it together and agree on the bailout terms. Someone should have locked them all in the Capitol for the whole weekend!

Anyway, hope everyone has something to savor this last weekend of Sept. - Hugs, Skye

I have been pretty quiet here, mostly because I am totally swamped with school stuff.  In fact I should be commenting on papers now instead of writing to you guys, but I just HAVE to talk to you all!

Owen got tapped for the gymnastics team, so now I am spending yet MORE time at the gym waiting for kids.  Thank goodness for laptop computers and large tote bags full of papers!  I try to make the time productive....just try to picture me grading an english paper on my computer while bopping to the Red Hot Chili Peppers on my MP3 player.  When the papers are REALLY bad I switch to Nirvana  :-)

My sister is coming up from Florida this weekend to visit, and we decided to have Rosh Hashana on Sunday because that way we can all be together.  We are going to trek out to LI in the morning, and have a lavish brunch at my mom's house.  Of course, the fact that it is not at my own home does not mean I escape cooking...my mom is not the best cook, so I will be making the waffles and various toppings.  As we speak I have a honey cake in the oven that smells just divine.  I am torn as to whether or not to make a coffee cake also...the lazy side of me is saying NAAAAH honey cake and waffles with whipped cream and strawberries should be quite enough!

School is going pretty well...although I actually had a student in one of my classes start complaining about the reading assignment (it is sooooooo much work!!!) in the middle of class.  Not the best way to get on my good side LOL.  Especially since the reading assignment was 5 chapters of an Agatha Christie novel and amounted to about 25 pages.  I mean SHEESH I used to get more than THAT when I was an undergrad!  This guy should take world lit with me...I assign  Homer's Odyssey as ONE of the works that we cover.  Now THAT is a lot of reading.  On the other hand, the students really seem to be progressing nicely and overall they are an enthusiastic crew.

Other than that, the days are kind of blurring together....and right now my brain feels a bit packed in cotton because of my greif over Joni.

    I love you all.....

Joni : Big warm hugs  we are here all of us thinkng and praying that you are getting lots of love and care . Cuddle up and warm yourself , the energy here is floating towards you , we are all holding hands in cyberspace for you girl .............. let those warm Alberta winds carry us and our prayers to you .

    Heres a song for you

Oh the prairie lights are burnin' bright
The Chinook wind is a-movin' in
Tomorrow night I'll be Alberta bound
Though I've done the best I could
My old luck ain't been so good and
Tomorrow night I'll be Alberta bound
No one-eyed man could e'er forget
    The Rocky Mountain sunset
It's a pleasure just to be Alberta bound
I long to see my next of kin
To know what kind of shape they're in
Tomorrow night I'll be Alberta bound

    Oh the skyline of Toronto
    Is somethin' you'll get onto
But they say you've got to
    live there for a while
And if you got the money
You can get yourself a honey
A written guarantee ta make you smile
But it's snowin' in the city
And the streets and brown and gritty
And I know there's pretty girls all over town
But they never seem ta find me
And the one I left behind me
Is the reason that I'll be Alberta bound

    Hi All,

Joni, we all love you and we are all surrounding you with our fervent prayers. I hope you can feel us with you. I am thinking of you constantly. Jan, thanks so much for the photos.

Cindy, I hope you are feeling better. Any test results?

Viddie, what great news about Ed!

Tina, hope Jac's party was great fun. You are a wonderful mom.

Caya, Viddie, and Rebecca, enjoy the celebrations with your families.

Jan, I hope the gas snafu is easing up. I never would have thought your supply would be affected.

We had a great week at the beach, enjoyed lots of walks, bike rides, and books. Our dd and her husband joined us for the second half, which was fun. Her pregnancy is still early, but she feels great, and they are so excited. I have started knitting a blanket for her, and she was happy about that.

The cycle of life .... so sobering for all of us. We none of us know what is ahead. Hold your loved ones tight.

Joni I hope those pix help you visualize us being there with you.

Amera, so good to hear from you.

Sharon, I swear you ARE Janis Joplin's reincarnation. The song is wonderful.

Rebecca, honey cake sounds divine. And yay for Owen the Gymnast! Also had to laugh at that horrendous 25 pages of Agatha Christie assignment. This is the YouTube generation.

I had a call today from my mom, she was crying because her hip hurt, my niece was at work and all other sibs elsewhere occupied, so I had to spend most of my day driving there and back and taking her to urgent care. Dx was bad osteoarthritis, probably requires a hip replacement. Tomorrow I have go back and take her for an MRI and bone scan. 80 seems old for a hip replacement but we'll see what the doc says.

Tina, it's Desperate Housewives night, at last! Let's see how Felicity Huffman is doing 5 years after her fictional cancer bout. - Skye

    Hi girls,

Jan, awesome pics!  So nice to post so everyone can see what a nice get together we had.  Joni looks fantastic!  Joni, I'm so hoping for a turn of events for you....you were the topic of my DH's and my discussion at dinner tonight...  yes, for the first time, prob. ever, we went to dinner alone.  We had Paul babysit.  Only gone just over an hour, but the opened a really good steakhouse just up the st.  We had such a crazy b'day weekend with Jaclyn...took ten kids to Red Robin last night...Paul's friends just started showing up at the time we were ready to leave, so we just brought them along... came home, painted ceramic pots, played laser tag, watched Another Cinderella Story w/Selena Gomez.  This am, donuts for the ten kids, more playing.  They left by 10 but by 2 I was at a pumpkin patch w/Jac and her other friend for a few hours...they had hay rides, "hay sledding", zip lines, jump houses...  killed the day.  Tonight DH and I said enough...time for just us.  We told Paul he was old enough to babysit (nearly 12) for one hour while we went 3 miles away for dinner.  It was a nice night out.  Just sitting here waiting for Desperate Housewives.

Joni, XOXOXO and so hoping you are feeling better this evening/comfortable.  I agree w/Mel, being w/Thor would probably help you tremendously.  Lynn, what an awesome gift you gave Joni, with that picture of Thor.

    Joni,

I have been thinking about you constantly. I also keep remembering you in LV on the scooter with Lynn. We did have a blast! I am sending you lots of hugs and prayers and warm thoughts. We are with you and love you dearly..

    Jan,

Thanks so much for posting the pictures. A lovely remembrance of our time together. You captured the moments perfectly.

I am at my brother and sil's in Maryland. My sil is having 35 people for dinner tomorrow night. I could never do that. Meri is driving up from Richmond to join us.

    Skye,

I am sorry to hear about your mom's hip. It is so hard seeing them getting older and more fragile. I took my mom on the airplane with me to Maryland. Wheelchairs are a wonderful invention. She is going to turn 93 in December. Yikes!

    Tina,

Sounds like you had a wild weekend. I am glad it ended with a quiet dinner out with your DH. I remember the first time Jonathan babysat for us. What a relief!

    Melia,

I am glad you had such a lovely weekend. I am also glad you made your decision. It is a very hard decision, but once it is made, I am sure you are relieved. I know I was- and still am.

    Rebecca,

Lol'ing about you switching from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Nirvana- and back again and again and again.

    Mary,

It is great news that your son has his power back. It is amazing the things that we take for granted.

Yikes with the stock market today. Even though I am helping my sil (Myrna) prepare for tomorrow night, I am actually having a relaxing time. I would think differently if I were entertaining that many people in my house with a full sit down dinner. Helping is so much different than being the hostess.

I hope everyone has a great week.

    Love,

    Viddie

    Hello, lovely friends....

My heart is tender today, thinking of you Joni, and just hoping that you can feel the love from this group of women. I too love that song and just thought of you, Joni as I read the lyrics.

I saw my onc on Friday. Generally speaking, I'm okay. Specifically writing of my new hypertension, she is somewhat concerned. I have an ultrasound doppler of my kidneys on Wednesday afternoon. She wants to eliminate the possibility of renal artery stenosis (narrowing) that would cause the hypertension.

I also sometime have to do a 24 hour urine study. Whoopppeeeee! Collect my urine over 24 hours and then deliver it to the onc's office so they can study it. They will evaluate the adrenal gland function. The only time I can do that is on a Sunday so I can collect it all and deliver it Monday morning. I've told my daughters if they see a funny looking brown jug in the frig, don't drink out of it - it's NOT lemonade.

Dr. B thinks all will be well but since this has come on so suddenly, she wants to make sure nothing is overlooked. I have to go speak to my GP about medication. I used to be so proud that I didn't need any routine meds. Now it's tamoxifen and Effexor. In January, if my menstrual cycle continues to remain absent, I will be switched from the tamoxifen to an AI. And now I'll have to add an anti-hypertensive. That's what I get for being cocky, I guess.

The weather is much cooler here. I love it. Autumn is my favorite season. The trees are showing color and the clouds are changing.

Skye, we've had 80 y/o patients come  through my rehab facility after joint replacement. If they don't have many other health concerns, they generally do fine. Especially if this is elective and not the result of trauma, like a fracture from a fall. Those just turn deadly for the elders. Seem to start a cascade of negative health events. Speak to Mom's physician about her comorbidities and the possibilities. She can decide if it's worth the risk. You can also plan her rehab - scout out the best facilities. Ask the ortho doc what facilities have had good outcomes for his/her patients.

Tina, isn't that an exciting yet scary time? When you first leave the children to themselves? Even if you are just a hop-skip and jump down the road. Congratulations.

Blessed Rosh Hashanah to those who celebrate.

    tender in Iowa.....Cindy
