Jan 2008--Ain't it Great?

First of all, my sis' onc said no cancer recurrence. He told she'll have to get it removed and path done on it then, but for now, he does not see a recurrence. Hooray!!!!! When I talked to her last night, she was weighing the pros and cons of returning to her primary care doc for follow-up or going to the surgeon her onc recommended. I told her to give it a rest for the night and focus on the good news for now. That decision will still need to be made in the morning when her mind is fresher. I suggested that she take her pictures and test results to her primary care doc and have a consult. Perhaps her doc will have some guidance. She thought that was a good idea.
Anyhoo, I told her on Monday about SIS Kimberly's Super Cape. I mentioned that Kimberly wished she still had it so she could confer the magical healing powers. Turns out my sis had a red cape in her house and she decided that simply by wishing to confer magical powers, SIS Kimberly did so. So my sis wore her cape on Monday to her tests and again yesterday for her CT scan and visit with her doc. She's convinced it helped with the "no recurrence" dx, so many, many thanks to SIS Kimberly!!!!!
Back to school night was fun for a change. I guess it was the giddiness of all the senior parents who were doing it for the last time (many of dd's friends are the baby of their family, too). And dd did a great job with her presentation. It was so nice to see her peers look to her for leadership and watch her respond to parents questions by looking them in the eye and speaking clearly (okay, she used the word "like" a lot, but we told her about it and it's something to work on for the future). I particularly liked her AP Enviro Sci teacher-I was glad we were able to sneak her into his class. The English teacher is probably the weakest link this year (which is a shame as it's dd's favorite), but I told dd to remember to focus on the content of the class and try to overlook/forgive her teacher for her scatter-brained ways.
So today I'm going to shop around for my airline tix to Eleuthera. I'm hoping I can use some miles to get some relief on the price (it's more than I anticipated). Turns out my dh is on travel for 2 days while I'm gone, but dd has agreed to have her grandparents come over to take care of her so I can go. (I hope the old people are going to be around to do it...) And college girl is forgiving the fact that I won't be there for parents' weekend at her school as long as I drive up to take her to lunch some Thursday before I go (she has no classes on Thursdays). It seems I'm going to miss a brunch at her sorority house, but I'm sure her father can represent for both of us. So I think my trip's a GO! (Now I'm starting to sweat the bugs and the thought of sleeping on people's couches for 10 days...)
About it for me. Guess I need to marshal my basketball booster troops soon. I ran in to one of the coaches last night and they're chomping at the bit to order stuff for their teams and want to know how much money I'll give them from the boosters for the coming season. (Everyone always wants money!)
Onward through the fog...
D1
Oh, Carol, I seem to be okay with photobucket. I got the one picture sized okay, but I tried something different with the other one and I must've screwed it up somehow. I probably could have gotten it okay, but I just lost patience, truth be told. Thanks for the assist.

Hi Jewels! I have off today... good thing as I appear to have my first cold virus of the fall. Nothing major, just no voice and I'm congested. But I'm glad I don't have much to do today. I think I'll walk in the TM before I head out to the CPR recert class I have to take this afternoon. DD has dance class tonight, so I'll be running her there, but just sitting--- hey, this is a slow day compared to my usual craziness!
Last night was dd's open house for kindergarten. May I just gush for a moment? I am so proud of her and all she's accomplished so far in one month of school. Her teacher is awesome and had nice things to say about my girl. I hope dd continues to love school this much over the next 12+ years. She's obviously loving it right now and doing great.
Also had my onc appt and herceptin yesterday. My last MUGA was great (can't remember if I reported that or not... damn chemo brain!)-back up in the 60 percentiles. It looks like I have 4 more herceptin infusions to go, and then I'm done. He said I can get the port out then. So my last infusion is slated for Dec. 17! Maybe I'll get my port out before Christmas... Also reviewed the next few years' plan...basically MRI/mammo yearly, and see the breast surgeon and onc alternating every 3 months for 2-3 years. I asked about Vitamin D levels... he said mine should be fine as I faithfully take it with my calcium. Also asked about other scans or tests... none for me as of now. Guess that's all good news. Now I just gotta start doing some "weight bearing" exercises. Any suggestions from you who are so much more active than me? I know it sounds bad... but I just don't have enough time in the day to do all this stuff! I get up at 5 and often don't get to relax and have any "me time" until the kids are in bed by 7:30-8. I go to bed at 9. Yikes!
Anyway... so on to the posts...
Carol: Thanks for sharing the pics of your walk. You are amazing! Sorry to hear about your dog. Vet bills can be outrageous, huh? I swear I'll get pet insurance with my next animal. Our dog had surgery at age 5 on his knee--- cost over $2500. I feel your pain...
D1: So awesome that you got to meet another Jewel! Loved the pics of you and Paula. LOL at the "thug pic"! Hope your sis gets good news.
Cathy-CA: Welcome back world traveler. I wish I could just ride along in your luggage to see the places you've been. It sounds amazing. Hope your echo looks good. How many more herceptins do you have left?
That's it for me. Later, alligator!
-
D1: We must've been on at the same time. Glad to hear the good news about your sister.
-
Hey D1... so when I went on -line last night your pics we're not showing up on my puter at all. Then I read Kathy's post this morning, went back and woo-lah ... there they are. Great pics there gals ... you know so far I'd say that the Jewels sport a "pixi" type do pretty damn good !!!
Glad you we're able to share the great news from your sis!
Kathy, oh the joys of the kids going back to school and bringing the crud home ... my boy has a nose full himself, seems to happen everyyear. Sounds like you don't have time in your day to feel crummy !!!
Time to shower and get the Emla cream on ... port flushing in a couple hours !!!

D1 - Hurray on your sister's report! And, on dd doing such a fabulous job at back to school night.
Carol -- Hope ds gets over his cold. My dh caught one on our trip and -- generous guy that he is -- gave it to me. I'm having a hard time sleeping at night because I can't breathe, but do okay during the day. Have fun at your port flushing. When are they planning on removing it?
Kathy -- The best weight bearing exercise is walking. You get just as much benefit doing 5-10 minutes multiple times a day as doing a long stretch, so try to work in small doses if you can't find a slot for a longer workout. When I was working, we would sometimes just take a break and do a lap or two around the floor of our building. I think I have six more Herceptin infusions to go, but it might be seven. We never really discussed total number, just that it would be a year.
One of the local hospitals is part of a grant from the National Cancer Institute and I'm on their survivor panel. We had our meeting this morning to discuss nurse education. They are having a dinner next month (along with CEUs) to present cancer patient issues to nurses from other areas. Due to chemo, there are long-term implications when dealing with cancer survivors. It's an interesting panel and gets me thinking about different issues.

Ah, it's good to be home! Had a great trip to DC. The kids had a wonderful leadership academy with lots of fun activities and we got to do a few neat tours (the Capitol and White House, and the usual monument tours). They did a terrific scavenger hunt-type activity on the National Mall. Had 10 stations and took you from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol. It took all morning, but was great fun and the kids learned a lot while they were playing. We were supposed to leave yesterday at 2pm, but our little group of 4 (ds, a fellow officer, my wonderful teacher friend and myself) decided to stay in town and do a museum. We chose the National Archives and then took the Metro /bus back to our hotel to leave. So, we headed out around 6pm... not exactly good timing, but we chatted our way through the stop and go traffic. Ran into 2 road construction areas and one car accident and our 6.5 hour trip ended up taking us 9 hours. Crawled into bed around 4am this morning. Got lucky as our students are doing some type of standardized testing at their home schools and I didn't have students this AM, so was able to sleep in.
The highlight of my trip was my Sunday visit with D1. Our fearless leader is AWESOME! She is so warm and funny and our visit time just flew by. I loved all the 'cation pics--her dd has quite an eye with the camera. And her girls are just lovely. They looked like they were having a blast together in the pics from Croatia.
Oh, and like Joan said, the girl doesn't have an ounce of extra fluff. She's tall, thin and absolutely gorgeous! (As you can tell from the pics) Ds rolled his eyes at our thugg shot, D1! Wish I'd thought to have you stick around to meet him. He was in the lobby just minutes after you left.
Dh and I went to Charleston for our tests today. His and hers brain MRIs... LOL. I also had a PET Scan, blood work (tumor markers) and got my baseline mammo done (was dreading it, but it wasn't bad at all).
D1- YAHOO on your sister's NED! What a relief!!
Carol- it was so good to talk with you last week. Love the new pics you posted.
CathyCA- another exotic vacation. Wonderful! Hope you'll be sharing some pics for us.
KathyL- that "me time" is so important. Glad you're fitting it in where you can. Your experience at dd's open house made me smile.
Kimberly- so, are things settling down at work? Sending lots of good vibes for your teacher colleague. It has to be sickening to watch an innocent person being destroyed by false accusations...
Well, off to finish the laundry....

Hi Ladies,
You know after posting for about 9 months or so, a smarter woman would not even think to post directly on the site. Being the dork I am, typed a fairly lengthy post, decided to "refresh" the page, and poooooofffff !!! Post be gone !!!
In a nutshell ... had my onc appt yesterday, nothing riveting ... I'll schedule my port removal once I get the referal in the mail, will be having a baseline bone density test done, my achy bones I'll live with for now, and I'll have my uni-boob squish done after the port removal is healed. Lastly I scheduled my annual "you know what" visit with my gyno for the end of Oct.
So D1, I tried using a different return address on my SP gift (worked great), then ordered directly from a company and had a item sent, well my billing address was printed "big as sh*t" on the gift. Oh well, I won't reveal who it is ... and I'm still baffled as to who sent me the cool Suzy Toronto artwork.
Paula, glad to here your visit to DC was fun, I'm so glad you got to meet our fearless leader (we certainly missed you out west this summer), so that was cool you had a Jewel bond.
I must say, your spirit is amazing ... LOL at his/her brain MRI's ... you are one heck of a woman!
Off to start dinner ... ribeyes on the bar'b tonight ... hoping the dh catching the early ferry boat home, otherwise its another late meal.
Any other Grey's Anatomy fans, will be Tivo'ing tonights show.
Later, Carol

Hey Gang. Decided to drive up to visit college girl yesty, so I was MIA. It was a great visit. She's really happy this year and loves the whole sorority thing. I think her grades are okay, too!
She'll be home in 2 weeks for fall break, but I hadn't seen her for 5 weeks, so it was time (besides, I'm going to be in the Bahamas for Parents' Weekend, so this was my way of alleviating the guilt...).
Speaking of the Bahamas, both of my sisters are going now. Hopefully many hands will make light work. I think my one sis' recent scare has caused her to rethink some things in her life, so she's making more of an effort. Heading to the Bahamas with her sisters to do some volunteer work is just the first effort. I hope we get some "down" time to play a little. My coordinating sis is painting an all work and no play picture at this point...
Hey KathyL, sounds like your doc report went very well. Now you just have to keep yourself on track. Oh, and I'm sorry I was gloating about my last back to school night when you are all excited to be embarking on that adventure. Trust me, with time you'll look forward to the END of those evenings, but for now, please enjoy-don't let my cynicism rain on your parade!
So how's the ds' cold coming along, Carol? My kids seem to be back to normal now after about 10 days of sniffling and griping. (Well, the griping continues...) I guess I need to look into flu shots about now...
And then there's CathyCA taking her kid's cold on cation with her! How maternal of you! Hey, your panel sounds really cool. I just got a flyer for one to be held here on Oct. 11 and I'm thinking about going and seeing if there's something I can do to help going forward. My only issue is that's when college girl will be home for fall break and I'm loath to miss any excitement. We'll see.
So Paula's home safely. Sounds like the rest of your conference went really well. I'm glad my city treated you guys okay (you even got to experience some of our traffic-lucky you!). Please, you're too kind (see, told you guys, Paula's just a really nice person). I do agree that the time just flew by. And as soon as I got home, I realized that I'd missed an opportunity to meet your ds. What were we thinking??? HE could've taken our thug shots and got the hand signals in the frame...
So when do you guys get your test results back? I sometimes hate the way all my scans and whatnot works-"no news is good news" for me. In all honesty, I'd even like to hear the good news!
SIS Kimberly-I saw your testimonial for the Sutter folks. You must be very pleased with how that came out (and I'm not just talking about the foobies!). You look mahvelous in the photo, too. Hope you're keeping your head above water these days (although the treading will be good for your weight loss program!). Thinking about you.
Oh fine, Carol, giving away my SP secrets! I AM happy to hear your onc visit was uneventful. It's so cool that we're all racking up these doc visits without bad news. I'm loving this. Oh, I tivo'd Grey's, too. I really need to find some time to watch a bunch of this stuff cause I think I'm filling up my recording space (I've been tivoing Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher-have to get my political fix!). First, though, I need to go hop in my machine-I missed yesty with the visit to college girl.
And I'm with you, Paula's spirit is totally amazing. She's an example to us all.
Onward!

Happy Friday, Jewel friends! I've missed you all and can't believe I haven't posted for almost two weeks. I've been a quick lurker periodically when I've just had time to read, so I've kept up a little. Things have been NUTS around here. School is busier than ever, dh is having some issues at his school that have been rather stressful, and ds has had football and tae kwon do almost nightly.
We did finally get "for sale" signs up - last weekend. It's still not showing up on mls searches, which is frustrating, but we've been told the paperwork has been submitted. Hopefully it will start showing up soon!
Carol - LOVE all the pics from your 3-day!! Still waiting to see a pic of your decorated tent. Sorry you're dealing with achy's - hope the IB helps!
Sherry - Holy cow!! I can't believe you had your gall bladder out!! I hope you're feeling much better by now.
Jenn - so good to see a post from you! {{{{{BIG HUGS}}}}} for you - sorry to hear you're a blue Jewel. Please come here to talk it out when you feel like it - the Jewels are so great about not minding the venting.
Joan - Hope things are going well at school for you and you're getting back in your "groove."
Kimberly - I can't believe you had jury duty on top of everything else! Hope you're getting back in your groove with school too! It's amazing how long it takes - we've been at it now for about six weeks and I'm just finally starting to not be completely exhausted at the end of each week!
I sure hope everything works out with the teacher at your school - how awful.
D1 - BIG WOOHOO for your SIS!!!! Happy dance for her!
Your trip sounds really cool - actually both of them - the one you've already taken and the one coming up! Sounds like both of your dd's are doing great!!
Kathy - Glad your onco appt went well!! If we decide to build, I'll certainly have numerous questions for you!! We just found out one of the houses we were interested in IS still on the market - they were apparently in the process of changing realtors and that's why it wasn't coming up in a search.
Aren't little ones so much fun to watch when it comes to learning?! My niece just started kindergarten and I just love hearing her talk about it. My ds has always enjoyed school and has kept that excitement all the way through - he's in 7th grade this year. He has three new teachers this year and isn't as thrilled with them as he was for the three who left/changed grades. He also decided that I am not "allowed" to check his homework anymore - he actually told me that he "needed to be responsible and do it himself without my help." I told him we'd try it for a quarter and see how it goes - he brought home his first grade update last week and his lowest grade was an 87% - I was pretty pleased with that!
Cathy - Wow! Your trip sounds amazing!! Hope you get everything caught up and get settled back in. Where to next??? OH - I heard that Rick Springfield is going to be coming to our area soon - thought of you when I heard it on the radio!
Paula - glad your trip went well! Love the pics of you and D1 - just makes me want to have that Jewel ‘cation even more!! His/hers MRI's - you crack me up!
Well, here are some updates with me --- had my six week post exchange appt with my ps. Everything is going well and he's happy with my results. He released me and I can now start doing my normal stuff. We scheduled my nipple/dog ear surgery for Dec. 23 --- yah, not the best timing, but I want to get it in before the end of the year for insurance purposes and won't be able to shower for a week, so I wanted it to be during a break. I also went to my onco - had the normal bloodwork done. He's a no news is good news guy too - no news to report, so I guess that's good. I did tell him, though, that I've had some blood occasionally with bm's and he has ordered an upper/lower endoscopy just to make sure everything's okay. I'm a tad freaked about that, but am trying not to worry too much - it's on Oct. 7.
Better sign off for now and try to get some work done! Have a great weekend, Jewels!!

I MISS YOU GALS!!!!!! It just so sucks that work gets in the way of chatting with you gals more often than once a week.
Cathy- Welcome home!!!! Your trip sounds like it was fabulous. I agree about how American consumerism has infiltrated other countries, and to be honest, I’m not sure that’s a good thing. I find that going from town to town here in CA, you can count on the same chain stores and restaurants to be there. The things that make cities and towns unique is being squashed by the big chains. Will we go to other countries and find the same holds true? Will consumerism push out traditional businesses and dilute cultural influence? Sad. OK, off my soapbox.
Hope you got some good recipes from you cooking class.
Interesting about the Cancer Survivor panel. Explain a bit more about what you meant …due to chemo there are long term implications when dealing with survivors.
D1- Thanks for sharing the pics of you and Paula. I’m not sure you two can pull off ‘thuggin’. HeeHee
Your trip to help your sis with the library set ups sounds like such a worthwhile venture. How heartwarming it must be to see kids and adults reading and using the computer to expand their view of things.
WHOOHOO!!!! on the news of your sister’s non-recurrence. I love that she remembered she had a red cape and wore it to here appts. I’m telling you…having the super cape is a must have accessory item in every girl’s closet as you never know when it might come in handy.
Speaking of WhooHoo, Washington Mutual Bank, where we have our joint account and the bank who stole my WhooHoo for their marketing campaign, has gone under…been bought out by JP Morgan-Chase. Hmmm, I’m guessing they’ll want to rethink that whole campaign.
Did you get the whole compression bra thing figured out? How’s the machine working for you?
Update on working out – During jury duty not much exercise.
Last weekend. Some dancing at the wedding and rode my bike.
This week, rode my bike, did Pilates DVD, walked three days.
I’m not happy that I haven’t been eating enough. I’ve been in my room a few days this week helping kids and forget to eat, so it’s snacking on almonds or carrots during class.
I’ve got to make sure I eat as I want my weight loss to be healthy.
This morning I as 149.5 (I started this weight loss goal at 155 three weeks ago), but I think it’s water related as I didn’t get my quota of water this week either, so I’m thinking there’s dehydration to consider in this week’s loss. We’ll see if that number is still there on Monday morning after a weekend of eating well and getting my fluids back to what they should be.
I’m glad dd did so well with her presentation. Her English teacher being scattered…hmmm, sounds like me these days.
Carol – It’s been two weeks since the walk, but only a week since returning to full duty, so I’d give these aches and pains a few more weeks to resolve before pointing to the Femera. I hope that it is just getting back into the swing of more physical work as dealing with that for five years would not be fun.
I’ll be getting my port out in November during my Thanksgiving break.
I’m glad you liked the Sutter story. Here’s the link for our other Jewels:
http://checksutterfirst.org/cosmetics/
I’ll be talking to Sutter next week about offering a class to cancer patients to help them write about their journey since writing about one’s thoughts and feelings is a way to release stress, fear, and anxiety, etc… and to process our feelings in a nonjudgmental way.
So, how is that little weiner pup of yours doing? How are things with Zack- new rules, clean room, and staying at your place for two weeks, then Dad’s?
The Zin has been harvested, fermented, and racked. Now we wait. Greg added the Zin to one of the Petite Syrah/Merlot blends he did when you were here to get the Forbidden Gate Petite Zinferlot and left the other alone as Merlot-ah.
Kathy – A cold? So many parents tell me that when their kids start Kindergarten, they get sick more. Bump up those immune fighters.
I agree with walking. You can also use a wall for push-ups or squats. When you get up to walk, find a wall and do a set of push-ups ands squats against it.
Glad to hear that your Herceptin is going well, not harming the heart, and that it is almost done. Hard to believe that so much time has passed. I was thinking this morning that this time last year, I had just done my second mammo and ultrasound, and next week had my first biopsy. The journey was just beginning…and now, I look back, and it seems like so long ago on the one hand and like yesterday on the other. Time is a strange creature.
Paula – Thanks for the good wishes for my colleague.
Your trip to DC sounded like it was educational and fun at the same time.
His and Hers MRI’s…now what other married couple can claim that?
I’ve got two classes worth of packets to get through today as tomorrow, I do not want to do school work. Our grade book is going “live” next week, which means parents can see their kids grades and assignments. I collect packets every two weeks, so this is the first one as the first two weeks of school is not ‘graded’, but a time to learn how things are done. Since my sub didn’t do what I asked, I had to take this week to do what should have been done last week, so we are behind a week. Oh well!
Jules- Hey, good to hear from you. Glad I’m not the only one who’s not able to post regularly any more.
Still feeling not quite on my game…with the Jury Duty interruption and the sub not doing what was asked, I am treading water…D1, it’s too bad figurative treading doesn’t burn calories and tone the muscles, eh?
Yeah on getting the house For Sale signs up and hope that your MLS listing posts soon. That’s crazy that it has taken so long.
OK, and endoscopic peek is never my idea of a good time, but it needs to be done. Have you had hemoroid(sp?) issues? I know my GI track is still healing after chemo.
And chemo-brain…GEEZ, I sometimes feel like I’ve lost focus or something. I tell people about forgetting things more and losing words or saying the wrong word and feeling like I lose my place during a lesson, but I’m told by them they all feel like that…it’s getting older. I don’t buy it. I really do feel differently than before my dx. I know it will take time to totally clear out of my system, but it’s unnerving sometimes.
OK, I’ve got to get going and get some food in my tummy.
Love to all, SIS Kimberly
I feel so badly that my SP hasn’t heard from me lately. I’ll get my act together, I promise.

Hey J.J.'s ...
Sitting in a very quiet house today, the dh is out of town for the week, and the ds is at dad's. I'm glad that Zach will be coming my way after work today to spend the next week with me. The saga continues with him ... we're only 4 weeks into the school year and the grades are not too good. We had a family pow-wow this morning, and hopefully we will "all" be on the same sheet of music. If need be the skating and work will be put on hold until he truly realizes his priority is school. Thank goodness I can be a bit more on top of my parenting skills this year as it looks like he will be needing some continued guidance. We'll be setting up a meeting with his school counselor as well.
So Julie, how bout trading son's for the school year ??? I'd be ecstatic to have a son who was jazzed up about his school work.
Good luck on the house sale, thank goodness it only takes one to be the right fit for your home. Hopefully that somebody comes along soon.
Okay, so I think I may have missed something somewhere ... dog ear surgery ??? What the heck is that? So Santa's bringing you nipples for X-mas !!!
Here's to a bottom's up scope that can put your mind at ease.
Kimberly, thanks for asking about Schatzie, she's still coughing a bit, I think we'll hold off just a bit longer before taking her back in ... the vet called last week, said they'd do more xrays ($$$) to see if her lungs look better. We so should have gotten pet insurance years ago.
What a great idea on the writing class for cancer patients. I personally have a journal that I've been writing in for months now. Between that, my calendar, my e-mails, cards, etc., it is still comforting to go back and read and write about what I had been feeling.
Speaking of writing, just this morning I decided to finally go through my incoming e-mails as its time to print or delete many of them. You had some pretty intense ones you fired off during your toughest times in April. Although work, jury duty, exercise yada yada seem like a pain in the rear, looking back on those times makes life now seem like a cake walk.
D1, glad you we're able to get your kid fix. Fall break already ... that's right they started much earlier than out here. Heck the UW just started last Weds.
So the ds appears to have gotten over his cold, he graciously gave it to me. So far I've not been down for the count, just feeling a little sniffly. Went to bed last night at 7:00, we we're at a neighborhood bar'b in the afternoon, had a nipper or two of vino, and when we got home I was done. In fact, I never woke when the dh came to bed, and he was gone this morning before I woke up.
I received my referral for my port removal yesterday, will be scheduling that for as soon as possible. I have my bone density test scheduled for Tuesday. Unfortunately I have to go to Tacoma to get it done, so another day off work. My sick leave time is getting to the point of being a bit scary.
We have booked tickets to go to Arizona in November for 10 days. Not the norm for us, but what the heck is these days. Will be staying once again with our dear friends in Mesa, and this time we'll also be going to see Ginny and her hubby whom winter just north of Phoenix. Having turkey dinner as we sit out on the patio overlooking the golf course sounds like my kind of Thanksgiving!!!
Off to the deck to enjoy some of this nice Fall weather.
Happy Sunday to you all ... Carol

Hey Carol,
So a little time to just hang by yourself, eh? Sometimes that is so needed.
I'm sorry Zach isn't pulling is weight. My students, a vast majority, are not either. I swear they do not do homework or study. Hopefully, with all the parents being vigilent, he'll get his act together. It would suck to lose his job and his skating.
I totally agree that the whole jury duty, sub not doing what needed to done, and not being on top of my game at school is nothing compared to what I was doing just a few months ago. Thanks for reminding me that this is all just little shit!
I got an email from Sherry. She's had her surgery and got the staples out. She is sore and hoping to get back to work on the 7th. She's still planning to do her cancer walk - 5k and asked me to put her website on the Jewels page. I've already donated, so if others want to do so as well, here it is:
Speaking of walks, Cathy CA, did I already donate to your walk? I thought I did, but I can't recall.
I rode my bike to the store this afternoon, hung out with a gal friend (it was her dh's 50th party we went to last night) and registered Democrats, had lunch, then rode home. I've been working on curriculum this afternoon, and yesterday, I did get my grading done.
Your trip to Arizona for 10 days during Thanksgiving sounds delightful! I'll have my port out that week, so I don't think I'll be traveling.
Hope Schatzie's cough improves.
I'd like to say I'll check in this week, but I doubt it. I will try.
Have a great week, you all.
SIS Kimberly

Hi Ladies!
I am glad I only got a page behind this time! Still haven't gotten caught up on the other few pages I was missing, but I will.
Julie - Yes I will be up your way this weekend. It is going to be pretty quick, though. We are flying in to St. Louis Friday morning, then the boys play Friday afternoon in Collinsville, Ill. Our hotel that we are staying at is in Maryland Heights, MO. Saturday they play at 9 and 1 and then we fly out Sunday morning. I'm not sure how far you are from any of those places, but if you have any free time available, PM me and we'll see if we can meet up!
Paula - How is your dh doing? Last I read he was responding well to the chemo he was on. Forgive me, as I think there are about 4 or 5 pages of info I haven't caught up on. I think I did finally get the picture resized though, it did take some work. Now it feels like my hair is getting too long for these curls - I am going to schedule an appointment with my hairdresser and I want to get it highlighted again.
Here is a link to the article they ran about my support group last week. We were on the cover! (The picture down below was the cover picture). If you click on the picture of the group of us walking away, it takes you to the article. http://www.hertimes.com Linked By Pink is the name of our group. They did a nice job on it, though at the time, we didn't know where the calendars would be available to purchase. I can send one out to anyone who is interested. They are $10 and $2 would help with the shipping if anyone is interested. They came out really pretty. They are all in black and white and pink.
Is your doctor doing any ultrasounds or mri as follow-up? I don't agree with the mammogram thing - mine was not seen on mammo. I really want something more. My onc doesn't do the tumor markers.
Hi Kimberly! - The conference you went to sounds very interesting. Is the 7 Steps of Healing a book? Sounds like you are super busy these days, too. I have to do jury duty on the 17th. I have always wanted to get called for it, but of course now that I finally have, it is interfering with something I wanted to do! I hope I at least get a good case.
Carol - Love your pics! Hopefully you can get them uploaded online somewhere so we can see the rest of them. I have lots of photos on Shutterfly and it is pretty easy to use.
D1 - Nice that your insurance will cover your machine. I'm sure as I read on that I'll hear how that is going. Sounds like you are the type who could use the "forced" down time. Enjoy it! You got to meet JoTeach?! How nice. Hoping good things for you sis. Definitely think you both need to start a new tradition for August 17.
Kathy - So is your hair as light as it was before? Mine is quite dark and ditto and the getting wilder as it gets longer.
Ok - I think I have hit my quota of sitting at the computer for the day. Will keep catching up though.
Have a great day all!
P.S. My new SP sent me an angel pin with a funny card a week or so ago - thank you!
Thanks Kimberly for teaching me to type in Word - I just lost this whole thing!!!! So nice to just be able to cut and past again!

Oh my, what a day. My mom's computer died (my sisters and I bought it for her about 2 ½ years ago, so the mother board has no excuse). She's really distraught and doesn't have the budget for a new one without some sacrifice somewhere else ("retired"/fixed income, yada, yada, yada). So I spent the better part of my day poking around for something she can afford. Repairs would run her almost as much as buying a new one, so why not? I THINK I have a guy at Dell helping me find a good deal. I used their online chat service to lay out the situation and he said he'd email me some alternatives. I hope he comes through because I'm going to give the project a rest for now. (I love projects when the ball is in someone else's court!)My trip to Eleuthera is coming together. I'm so excited to share this experience with my sisters! I'm a little anxious about the care and feeding of my le, but I'm hopeful that I can teach my sisters how to do my MLD massage and they'll help me out.My dh finally came in to see me in my Flexitouch machine yesty. I had to tell him that I was disappointed that he was so self-absorbed that I'd had the machine for 2 weeks and he hadn't expressed any interest in seeing it, yet. He apologized and made sure he was there yesty. Dolt. DH. Honest to God.Other than that, I'm getting myself mentally prepared for my mammo next Monday. I had a crisis of confidence over the weekend when I realized that I can't have bp cuffs or needles on my left arm ever and a mammo is the mother of bp cuffs! I sent an email to my legu to see if it was okay for me to have mammos on my left side (I'll be damned if I'm going to let a mammo aggravate my le). I do have a MRI scheduled for November, so if I have to miss the mammo, I won't be upset (it didn't do anything for me before, why should I trust it now?). I'm waiting to hear what she has to say.So, what's up?Julie-thanks for the happy dance for my sis. I tried to copy and paste it in to an email for her, but I'm lame. I told her the guys were supposed to be dancing. Has the house appeared on the MLS, yet? I really don't know how you do it all. Please lurk, but chime in now and again to let us know how you're doing. Oh, and don't leave us hanging for the results of your bottom scope. That's too serious to keep us in suspense. What do you mean, Paula and I can't pull off thuggin', SIS Kimberly? We had total cred. (I think that's right.) Actually, given your schedule, I'm very impressed with how you're keeping up with the exercise. It's great to see you so committed to it. Stick with it, exercise pays off in so many ways. In fact, exercise before you post here, we understand. (Oh, and you can't possibly be as scattered as dd's English teacher-that woman is a mess! She didn't even have her shit together for back to school night and you figure that's when she's at her most impressive. I will say most teachers are amazing, but when you get one that isn't, it makes you appreciate the good ones. Shoot, you could say that about anyone in any profession, really.) Carol, hang in there with ds. It's hard to be an interested/involved parent, but our kids really benefit when we are. Ds will push and rebel (that's his job), but stay firm. He won't thank you now, but he will later. (Trust me, I know a lot about pushy, rebellious teens and she thanks me all the time now-so totally worth the pain.)How's the weiner doing?I think you're headed to Tacoma tomorrow. Drive carefully.Oh my, is it time to plan for Thanksgiving already?????!! Time with Ginny sounds great for you.Good call reminding SIS Kim about the little shit. How quickly we fall back in to our old expectations. Maybe that's a good thing.PALady! I'll bet you heard me hollering at you and Vettegal as I crossed in to the PA border to see college girl last Thursday! (Yes, I actually roll my window down and yell hello to you two at the top of my lungs!) I haven't checked out your link, yet, but I will. I'm supposed to be working on dinner and want to finish my post, first, so it will have to wait. I'm eager to see it. "Forced" down time-love it!Hey gang, g2g. Till later.D1

Just a quick check in... heading out in the morning to my f/u with the surgeon and the final reports from my scans last week. So far, all reports have been good-- tumor markers are "perfectly normal" and the mammo on the rt. boob was okay. I have the radiology reports from my brain MRI (clear!) and the PET Scan (shows some areas of slightly increased activity in the right axillary nodes and around the aorta... recommends another scan in a couple of months)... Well, then... we'll see what the doc sez tomorrow on that one. Hopefully, he won't be concerned and will be willing to take my port out before the end of the year.
After my appointment, dh and I head to Duke. I have his rad. report as well and it shows more decrease in the size of his tumors... according to the report, it looks like we may be down to only ONE tumor left! Hopefully Wednesday's visit should confirm that good news.
Things are really hectic right now at work. Didn't help that I was out 2 days last week and will be out again 2 days this week. I hate missing work--hafta work twice as hard to get ready for a sub and then catch up when I return... Kimberly, I share your frustration when the subs don't follow your game plans! What I really need is a clone...
So, things are quiet around here... looks like all is well in Jewel Land.
D1- so, gearing up for another trip, eh? How cool that you and your sisters will be working together--what a neat experience! Make sure to pack your camera along with the insect repellant.
I'm taking your advice and getting a consult for LE from my surgeon tomorrow. At the very least, I need to get some decent bras for my poor mismatched girls...
Carol- sorry to hear that Zach's progress report wasn't acceptable. Hopefully, he'll buckle down and bring those grades up before the end of the term!
So, you have a sick pup? Hope Schatzie is feeling better!
Julie- an endoscopy... well, we do what we hafta do, right? I should be back online before your test, but I'll wish you well now, just in case. I'm sending all my positive vibes your way!
Kimberly- thanks for the link to the Sutter article-- great write-up and loved your pic. (like Carol said, we Jewels wear our pixie dos well, don't we?!)
Thanks for the update on Sherry.
Norma- I enjoyed the article about your survivor group-- what a neat name "Linked by Pink." Thanks for sharing the link.
Hope everyone has a good week. Catch ya later!

Happy Tuesday,
Just got back from a very uneventful bone density scan. Gotta like a test that doesn't involve poking, prodding, squishing or disrobing. The only strange thing was it was at the hospital that my original diagnosis was revealed a year ago this Thursday, and I have not been back there until today. As I sat in the waiting area, which is shared with the Mammo waiting area, I couldn't help but wonder whom out of the ladies sitting there would have to hear those terrible words, "I'm sorry but ...".
So I should have gone to work this afternoon, instead I'm playing hooky. I started putting together some of the Jewel pictures, decided to do it the old fashion way of cutting and pasting actual prints. Although using every pic would be a little much, I hope that I have included enough of them to give us each a good look at our Sis' Jewels.
Paula, it sure appears that your doc has been the most thorough with follow-up test then any of our drs. Lets hope that your Pet Scan result is nothing more than a blip on the radar. And it so good to hear that Ed's txt is doing its job.
Boy hearing you and Kimberly talk about missing work, trying to play catch-up, dealing with subs etc., I will count my lucky stars that my work atleast does not involve that stress. I need to look at something positive about work, I've been on a major downer with my job. Maybe its my version of a mid-life crisis or something. I have no real fulfillment in what I do. Unfornutately, with the amount of years I have in the government, looking ahead to the "golden years" is kind of a reality. The retirement is decent. So in the meantime unless we would be willing to have a drastic change of life style (and figure out how to pay for kids in college) I need to get over the hump and try my darndest to enjoy each day that I have to get up and go to work. Sorry, got all wound up !
Julie, so I noticed last night that my ds' skate nationals are in Peoria, IL next year, I havn't looked at a map and realize IL is a decent size state, does Peoria exist anywhere near your neck of the woods? Oh, thought about another new reality show, "Son-Swap", I like the idea for the school year !!!
D1, okay ... enough said with another phone call, I've been educated on "Dolt's"!!! So I take it the Flexitouch is not a travel size machine. I'm sorry, but you got to love the name "Flexitouch"!
Norma, I received your calendar yesterday ... I must say they are beautifully done. I love the b&w photos with the perfect touch of pink on the shots. This is my shout out to our Jewel family ... you won't be disappointed with one. The concept behind this fund raising effort and the stories told have been done perfectly! BTW, you look fabo in your pics (Miss October herself)!!!
So we have a ton on pics on Shutterfly from the walk, the log in is realestateguide@att.net and the password is Kindred. I think you go to "all albums" to see this years walk pictures. I have about 60 or so posted there myself. That will be my next photo project, trying to put together a scrap book from that outing!
Kimberly, so two days into the week ... hopefully your work stress is leveling off a bit. Good for you to be getting in the exercise when you can. You live in a great neighborhood for biking and walking. Heck you just live in a great neighborhood as far as I'm concerned !
I got a kick out of your description of your friend (registered Democrat)??? We'll leave that one at that , enough said !!!
Thanks for letting us know about Sherry and her efforts for her walk. So Sherry, hope your feeling better with each day. You know it seems as if we should all be given a "Get Out of Medical Issue Free" pass for an extended period of time. Life works in mysterious ways.
Off to start gluing, then looking forward to the ds getting home so "we" can study vocabulary words. Its pretty sad when one of the only subjects I can help out with is English (okay, who's laughing with my poor grammar rearing it's ugly head), and thinking "Carol and English" scary thought isn't it ??? Well you should see my Algebra II and Chemistry skills, now thats really an ugly site !!!
Later gals,
Carol

I'm finally back in town for an extended period. Had a great time at Parents' Weekend at ds' college. The team won their football game, so my son can't accuse me of jinxing them by attending. They are currently ranked 15th and are undefeated.
I'm on the executive committee for the Parents' Association, so Friday afternoon was spent in a meeting to discuss this year's activities. The organization tries to provide parents with information that is very useful, but that your child probably won't bother to tell you. Every event this weekend had administrators at it and I'm always so impressed by how open they are to comments. They always make sure you have their contact information and want any feedback you have. Told the dean of facilities that the only complaint my child has is that the water isn't hot enough in the showers. Figure if that's the only complaint, things are going pretty well. He laughed and said they've had several hot water heaters go out in the dorms this year and they are battling the problem.
Kimberly -- the comment about long-term issues related to chemo is a very broad one. For example, as you know some regimens can cause heart failure. If nurses know a patient has had this regimen, they will know to look for this even if the patient is being treated for a gall bladder (to use Sherry as an example). There's actually a book published by the National Cancer Institute called "Facing Forward: Life After Cancer Treatment" that discusses changes that may have occurred due to treatment and some suggestions for coping. It's available on on-line here . This is one of the publications that they are giving out to patients. There is a companion one called "When Someone You Love Has Completed Cancer Treatment".
And, yes, you did donate to my walk fund. Thank you again. The support has been amazing. I'm really looking forward to November when I finally get to experience it. We have several weekend walks in October, so we can practice 18 and 15 miles back-to-backs in preparation.
Carol -- Hope your bone density comes out good. It's such an easy test compared to some of the other things we've experienced, but I understand what you're saying about being back at the scene. I kind of feel that way about the breast center at the hospital, although my last mammo was clean.
Paula -- so glad you and dh are getting good news. The two of you have been through so much.
Julie -- You have your surgery scheduled for my b'day. Hope that's a good omen.
D1 -- the trip to the Bahamas sounds wonderful for you and your sisters. To be able to do good and enjoy a family reunion sounds perfect. Make sure you wear your compression sleeve on the plane. I always forget to put the stupid thing on and end up hunting for it mid-flight. Fortunately, I haven't had any le symptoms, but I figure I shouldn't take chances.

Hi Jewels,
Wow I have missed so much I have been so busy this week, I did have some depression, 3 surgeries in one year and chemo and rads. I'm I'm over it now. I'm walking and training for my cancer walk Oct 18th. I missed D1 and Paula meeting. D1 going to the Bahamas. The Jewels are so busy, busy. Pictures of you two are nice. I'll tell you all why I have been so busy, the day I got out of the hosp. I looked at my email and back in May I applied for several work at home companies, real companies. One finally contacted me I was all stapled up and sore got out of my sick bed and faxed and emailed everything they wanted me to. They never once said I was hired. I don't have a land line phone and I explained to my daughter that i needed one so I could get this job. Well she would not call it in. Finally Sat night they emailed me and told me I was hired and to log on and start my paid training. I don't have the phone yet and could not put in my phone no#. They got mad at me and suspened me. I explained I will probably have the phone by Fri. Just waiting for them to flip the switch. So I have been on line on and off for a few days trying to reason with this cold company, that does not give 2 hoots in hell about me. Kmart is mad at me, but they should let me go back to work for them next week. I'm sorry did not mean to ignore everyone just so worried about losing this job I can't think straight. I also have the runs a lot when I try to eat something that is not going to stay in. I'm very limited what I can eat. Well I know that's to much information.
Sis Kimberly and Carol I just want to think the both of you from the bottom of my heart for donating to my cause. I'm going to get up early tomorrow and read and get caught up and post I can't wait to find out what else is going on.
I got my pathology report from my gall bladder and it's cancer free, I had a blockage and was infected. So I'm way better now, I just got off the antibiotics. On Fri I had my staples removed.

Happy October, Jewels! I need to check in early today, as I have a full plate.
Still negotiating my mom's new computer purchase. I hope I'm able to check my emails enough today to catch the guy at Dell who's putting the deal together for me. I've discovered that by entering their chat area and then dealing with your "chatter" via email, you can save some money off the deals offered on their website. So if you're ever in the market for a Dell, that's the way to go.
Heard back from my legu. She said the benefits of a mammo outweigh the risks for me (um, and what benefits have I EVER received from a mammo?). So I have to get up early enough to hop in my Flexitouch (yeah, weird name) before I go for the mammo and then use it again afterward (every time I use it, I'm immobilized for an hour!). She also said to be sure to wear all of my compression 24/7 for a few days before and after. I'm excited.
CathyCa-thanks for the reminder on the sleeve when flying. Actually, I have to wear the damn thing every single day, so I don't forget it as much. The part I don't wear all the time is the gauntlet, so I have to be careful not to forget that when I fly! I also have to wear chest compression when flying, but again, I wear that every day, too, so it's hard to forget.
LOL on the hot water being ds' only issue! That's very good news, indeed. And I really like the whole parents' association idea. It IS hard to know what's going on when your kid is not at home (heck, sometimes it's hard when they ARE at home!), so that feedback would be invaluable. So glad ds is in a good place now. I'm sure you are, too.
Keep training for that 3day! It's great that another Jewel is doing one this year.
Paula-FABULOUS news about Ed's tumors!!!! Okay, Jewels, we need to send our super powers Ed's way to shrink away that last one! I hope your report today is a good one. Oh, and speaking of reports, I'll be interested to hear what your le consult bears out. (Get a bra with lace for me!)
Carol-good talking to ya yesty. Boy, I hear you on the retirement from the govt. My dh has 19 ½ years with the govt and has to go back for 6 months so we can get the retirement health care plan. He's spent years fretting about when it will be best to do that and how, but we know it has to be done. If he goes in for 5 ½ more years, he'll qualify for early retirement, so that could be good, too (although by the time he finishes the 5 ½ years, he'll be retirement age anyway...). I'm hoping I can stay in retirement now...
I gotta check out the links you, CathyCA and PALady have given us before we flip to a new page on our thread and I forget. (I'm so outta sight, outta mind these days.)
Sherry-Okay, your whole job situation is just sucking right now. Who needs that much stress after the year you've had? I really, really hope things straighten out to your benefit real soon. Hang in there and vent here whenever (everyone needs an outlet). Focus on the good news that the gall bladder was cancer-free!!! Now that deserves a giant-sized WOOOOOHOOOOO!!!!
I gotta get to gettin'. Sorry for the brief post (brief for me).
Wishing everyone a happy hump day and a good bc awareness month! (How appropriate that I, a bc survivor, have my mammo this month...)

Just sneaking a quick peak ... I know that I won't have time tonight as I will be going over to the Seattle side of the pond just as soon as I get home from work jump in the shower a take off. The gals I walked/trained with are having a dinner at a Mexican joint so we can share pics and war stories. Kinda bummed its on a work night as it will probably be a late one getting home, gotta love catching a ferryboat to travel !!! It will be great to see Ginny before she heads south to AZ for the winter. She has definitely become much more than a walking buddy to me over the past 6 months. Thank goodness for e-mails and cel phones to stay in touch.
Sherry, hang in there gal ... you are more than due to have something go your way soon. Having added insult to injury with your health and now your job situation BITES !!!
D1, did we get Mom's puter purchased ???
Cathy, I'd have to say I'm a bit jealous that you still have your 3 day to look forward to. The let down for me since that weekend is still lingering. Two of the gals I walked with here in Seattle are going down to do the San Diego walk as well, lucky them !!!
I received a call yesterday from my onc, reporting that my bone density test came back with normal results. No big surprise there! Now I just hope that it will stay in the normal range. The achey bones are by no means getting any better. With each passing day, I have to say I'm more discouraged that its the Femera causing them. Today at lunch we discussed (the guys and I) these magnetic bracelets that 3 of the guys in our shop wear. They swear that they help with joint aches and pains. We'll since I would prefer to not have to take a pill (ibu's) to combat the se's from the Femera I'm game to try this dorky looking bracelet. Hey, even if its in my head that it may help, its worth it to me to try.
No word from the surgeon office about getting my port removed (faxed them my referral) ... so what have you all been told about having them removed ... are they using a local or general anethesia ? The thought of being awake scares the heck out of me !!!
Anybody catch the Oprah show dedicated to BC on Tuesday? I personally liked seeing the woman whom starting the Susan Komen Foundation (her sis). Looks like we'll be getting blasted with BC awareness this month on the boob tube. Oh how I remember this day a year ago today, not a great day for me.
One year later ... Life is Good... Carol
-
We're home! Good news all around. I read through my scan reports while I was waiting on the doc to come in and they sounded pretty good on the second reading... guess I was a little freaked on the first reading! Anyway, my surgeon said NED (a big Kimberly WOOHOO on that one!). So, I have my port removal scheduled for 10/13-- a teacher work day, so no sub needed.
The trip to Duke went well and dh got a great report! His brain MRI shows only one distinct tumor which is shrinking, and another very small "area of concern." I'm just amazed at how well this trial is working. And to think I was dismayed that it was only a phase 1 study! We will return to Duke the week of Thanksgiving.
Sherry- So glad that your path report was good! But gee, you didn't even get a break to recuperate! Sorry you're dealing with such a crummy work situation. I hope everything works out the way you want.
Carol- good news on the bone scan. Your walking regimen is just what the doctor ordered to keep those bones healthy!
As for the port, I'll have mine removed in short-stay surgery under "twilight" anesthesia--same routine that they used to put it in. I was pretty sensitive to the meds they used... slept thru the whole thing. I'm looking forward to getting rid of this thing!
Guess you're out on the town by now. Sounds fun even if you'll be up past your normal bedtime. I'm taking a break from my exciting evening: grading papers and getting ready to watch the VP debate. I fell asleep toward the end of the pres. debate. I'm trying to read/research as much as I can on these critters who want to govern our country so that I can make an informed decision on election day. Some days I feel that I've made up my mind... other days I feel as if I may have to draw straws...
Ah, well...
Cathy- so your walk is in November? Was thinking it was this month. Guess you'll be stepping out for some long walks this month in preparation. I know you'll do well since you stay so active!
D1- On the LE-- doc sez no... if it were LE, I'd have issues with my armpit and arm as well... What I have, according to him is a "normal" reaction to the trauma of radiation on the boob. Usually it shrinks the affected tissue, but about 10% of the population has the opposite effect--more fullness. He said it could take up to TWO YEARS to resolve... if it resolves.... it might not...
So... I dunno... All I know is, I am a full size larger on the right than the left. Makes bra shopping a PITA.
Hope your mammo is as uneventful as mine. Esp. since you already have major LE issues!
I'm heading north tomorrow with ds to prepare for the student organization's state leadership conference. The students (40 of them) will arrive Saturday morning with my colleagues for the one-day event. I'll check in with you all on Sunday. Hope everyone has a good weekend!
Paula

A quick HELLO to everyone -
Speaking of BC awareness month - tomorrow I am going to a Komen luncheon over at the Fort Worth Convention Center - there is going to be lunch (duh!) & some comedians performing. I am taking my mom as a guest. I am excited - it'll be a nice way to spend my birthday. On the 16th I'll be taking my family to the TCU football game against BYU - it's advertised as the 'Frogs for the Cure' game. Komen is having a Tailgate Party for 'survivors' & their families, catered by a local mexican restaurant, followed by all of us 'survivors' cheering the players on to the field. I am excited - my niece is a sophomore there, so hopefully she'll be able to meet us. The weekend of the 18th (the 1 year anniversary of my diagnosis) is the Dallas County Komen Race. It'll be a family reunion of sorts w/ a lot of my closest female relatives ( both blood related & in-law) flying in. We'll be staying the weekend at a Dallas hotel. Following the race we are all going to the Grand Spa in Dallas to be pampered, followed by dinner at a local 5 star steakhouse.
I know a lot of women who have gone through bc are so tired of how 'pink' October has become - I happen to feel the opposite. I know I've told you all this before, but Komen's campaign provided a lot of much needed information to those closest to me ( my mom & my oldest daughter). at a very critical time before my diagnosis (1 week before). When it came time for me to break the news to them, they were armed w/ enough information so as not to be too frightened by the news - in fact they both took it very well. My mom had taken my daughter to a fashion show at the local mall, sponsored by Komen, & subsequently came home w/ a lot of knowledge about bc. Although I had found my lump in mid-September, at that time, noone knew about it except for my husband.
Wow....it seems like a lifetime ago, but it's only been a year...or should I say - it's already been a year!
By the end of this year I'll have 2 walks under my belt - maybe I'll try for the 3day next year?
Congratulations!!! on everyone's great test results - that goes for all the Jewels who've had glowing reports as well as the ds's & dh's. There is definitely power in numbers when it comes to positive thoughts, prayers, & just plain positive vibes!!
Have an awesome weekend everyone & take care!!!

Hi JJ's,
I have spent 3 days on and off catching up with all of you. I have to say we are a busy bunch. I'm sorry I missed so much I have pages of notes and it feels good to know what is going on again, it makes me feel like i'm in the loop again. Still trying to sort out the new job thing. The stupid phone co finally turned on the dang phone today. They are slower than snails. I just want to do a few shout outs because I'm too tired to sort out my notes right now. I'm walking everyday up to 2 miles now. My right side gets a little sore. I going to push further tomorrow. The newly weds are great and ordered me a shuttefly book of the wedding. I was so touched and couldn't believe how beautiful all the pictures were. They bought the rights to their wedding pictures and have them on CD's and they can make the shutterfly books. So nice. OMG I laughed so hard at all the Dick comments, it's been very intertaining.
D1 I'm so relieved your sister is going to be ok. I hope you and your sisters have the best time in the Bahamas. Big Hugs to you. I'm glad so far your BRCA test are neg.
PAlady I'm going to order a calender too. That is such a cool project, I know you are proud of yourself. You raised 10K and I love your chemo curls. My hair is very wavy, I guess that's chemo curls too. I have more body thatn I did before and it looks maybe thicker.
Paula Great news for you and Hubby, you both can been threw so much this year. I really loved the thugging pics, I really think you both pulled it off.
SIS Kimberly thank you for keeping the jewels updated for me and posting my site. I'm sorry about your friend, that is what worries me about my daughter being a teacher. Anyone could say anything about you and people believe it. I don't know where you get your energy, thank you for sending me lots of energy, maybe that's why I'm walking 2 miles already. I think that is really great you are teaching a class about writing and feelings, sounds great. Keep up the good work. Good luck on the weight loss you are doing good. I'm going to weigh myself on Monday and see how much more I have lost. Thanks for the idea of gells, now I will be able to go gellin. Thanks for the hint of chemical free mosqitoes spray. Darn those pests. Jealous of your fall weather, the 90's. It's been in the 40 and 50's and 60's here. Today was a hot one, it made it to the 60's, almost needed my mosqitoes spray. Enjoy that CA Sun.
Carol I cried thru your 3 day jouney. So touched my picture made your photo album. I know you are sore hope you feel better soon, sending you lots of hugs and energy. I was so touched that your husband gave you that necklace, what a sentiment, he is a keeper. Enjoy your cation to Arizone for Thanksgiving. I know the first mammo after treatment is a bit eerie. Son swap?? I know I missed a lot. Glad you are hooking up with your war buddies LOL. I was cracking up when you said I need a Get out of medical issues free card. That is so good, I'm starting to feel I have been delt one. I hope your friends baby and Steph is going good. I know I spelt his name wrong sorry. I"m glad freckle was B-9, oh my friends lump was also B-9. Carol congrats on raising all that money I know it was worth all your aches and pains.
KathyL Sorry nipple surgery did not take, I forgot when are you having it again. Or did you just have it. Talking about chemo brain, my chemo brain is working in over time tonight. I look it up again. I'm hope your sister is healing from her gall bladder surgery wow we both had same surgery that week. I really need to take better notes. Sorry get well soon Kathy.
I love all my jewel friends, but I GTG Sherry {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{ Hugs }}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

Okay, girls -- I just spent an hour typing up a post (in Word) and it's not letting me paste it to the submission box!! Uuuuuggghhhhhh!!!!! I'll try a couple other things and see if I can get it to work.
-
Can't figure out what's up -- must be a "site" issue. I'll save it for tomorrow and try again. Just want to share this part quickly -- Exciting news!! Norma is in Illinois this weekend for her son's soccer tournament and we have plans to meet up tomorrow!! She's a little over an hour from me - but only about 15 minutes from where I work, so the drive is nothing for me! I'll be taking my camera and will try to post a pic tomorrow night or Sunday. I'm so excited to get to meet a "Jewel"!!! I'll post more once it will let me paste what I wrote!!
-
Julie and Norma ... I will be going to bed this eve with goose bumps over my body ... I'm totally stoked about you both getting to meet each other in "real life". I still find it so surreal that this has been the forum for so many of us finding new friends, and getting to actual meet in person is too cool.
Just last night I chatted with a fellow walker from the 3 Day, unfortunately her mom was just diagnosed this week with bc (the biopsy was just done Weds). We met her mom on our walk (she was out cheering us on at one of the cheering areas). To what extent she did not yet know, although any part of it is not a cake walk, I told her to have her Mom, if she was anyway "puter" savvy check out BC.org. Here this gal had walked not on behalf of anyone directly related or anyone she personally knew, but just because she had heard so much about it. It was painful to see her emotionally wiped by the news.
I know that not everybody who checks out this website is as lucky as we all have been to have connected with each other ... I will always count myself as one of the fortunate ones.
What a ride this has been, and I often have the gals I've connected with in my thoughts ... night all, Carol

Okay, I've been checking in for the past couple of days, but no time to post. Let me make that right.
Still messing with my mom's computer situation. Now she's having a crisis of confidence in Dell because the last puter she had was a Dell and it died after 2 ½ years. So I'm waiting for her to decide what she wants to do. (Do you hear my fingers drumming?)
I went on a date last night with dh. He took me out to dinner. Dd headed off to the high school football game, so we weren't leaving her in the lurch. It was nice (I splurged and got a crabcake-yummy). I guess with the recession everyone is talking about coming soon, I'd better take advantage of being able to afford a dinner out now and then. (For those keeping score, no action, just dinner.)
I do have a new development to report in my recovery. I've been complaining to the gal working on my rotator cuff that now, with my new range of motion, I notice my armpit burns every time I raise my arm above my shoulder. She's thinking it may be the mess of scar tissue I have there (my surgeon didn't do a great job on the node surgery scar-in fact, he sewed me up a little kiddy-wampus and left me with armpit hair sticking out of my armpit. Luckily, rads zapped that hair into the nether world, so that was one good thing! But my scar tissue is kinda messed up under there.). Anyhoo, she talked with my legu and they've decided to try some kind of silicone patch under there. I'm supposed to wear it as much as I can for the next few weeks and see if my scar/scar tissue begins to soften. I'm hopeful. I'm fussing with it a little because it keeps getting dislodged by my big bra, but I'm thinking I'm going to figure out how to position it so it stays in place real soon. I did wear it overnight and it was still there this morning, so that's good. I'll keep you all posted.
So Carol, did you guys eat any Mexican on your 3day? Talk about cheesy, spicy glop! One of my favorite cuisines. Yummm. Hope you guys had fun rehashing your experience and you got home in time for bed! Magnetic bracelets? Sounds like my silicone patch. May as well give it a try. It'll go with your necklace!!!
Oh, and you know my take-any time they cut in to my body I have to be asleep and will make a stink with my surgeons about it. Voice your preferences-it's your body and your peace of mind.
BTW, I thought about you all day yesty, knowing it was your cancerversary. I'm so happy you're where you are right now and have put the last year behind you. Congrats. Keep on truckin'! (Ohh, how appropriate for you!!!!)
Oh my gosh, Paula, what great news from your trip to Duke. A refreshed reading of your own scans and the doc report on dh-all good! (Did they have any explanation for the long seizure? Is it related to the shrinking tumors?)
And hooray on the port removal!! One more cancer-related thing behind you. I'm so happy to hear your le report (do you have time to work and be a mom during all of this????). Hopefully, your swelling will start going down soon and not interfere too much with your bra shopping.
Hope your conference went well-how great that you get to spend the time with your ds.
Therese! Great to hear from you! Sounds like your ‘pink' celebration is going to be a big one this month. Good for you. Embrace the things that make you happy. Who cares if others don't find the joy you do in things ‘pink,' you have to make yourself happy. So walk, lunch, tailgate, cheer, and hug your way through October. You have certainly earned the right.
(I started the process to get me one of those bc specialty license plates for my car yesterday. I've reserved "O FUBC" as my personalized message-FUBC was already taken, imagine that! Poser. Anyway, I have to get an emissions inspection and then trot off to the courthouse to finish my order. I hope to be done next week. So, I guess I'm still in the pink, so to speak.)
I'm so glad you're resolving the job thing, Sherry. I'm sorry it was such a hassle for you, but when you get it all settled it will be worth it (and you'll forget what a pain it was-kinda like childbirth, or hell, CHEMO!) The shutterfly thing sounds like a most amazing gift. I'm sure you'll treasure it forever.
Ah, you remind me-they finished the BRCA tests on the rest of my strand and it all came back negative (the first part they did was on the "Jewish" stuff as that's a high risk factor, but they then took it back and checked out the whole thing). The gal said there could be a genetic connection because of my mom's thyroid cancer, but when we talked about it, we decided to stop testing. It's not that important to me. So I guess my cancer, like most people's, was just my UNluck of the draw.
Julie-Sorry about the hassle on the post (hope that doesn't happen to me), but what GREAT NEWS about you and PALady!!!!! I'm SOOOO excited for you guys! You won't believe how good the in-person hugs feel. Getting one from a Jewel is such a major treat (I mean, we've been cyber hugging for the past 9 months when we all really needed hugs and to get a real one-oh, I can't put it in words). Anyway, give an extra squeeze for me! Can't wait to see the pictures!
Oh, Carol, what sad news about your friend. It's hard to believe she was on the sidelines as a supporter and now she's going to be a survivor. Yes, send her to this site. I agree that we were lucky, but I'll bet others feel equally as lucky on other threads. There's something connecting about weathering such a difficult experience together. I hope she finds the support and laughs we all need on this journey.
Hmmm. I need more coffee. The dh just cleared my plate from which I ate the coffeecake he whipped up this morning, but now I need a drink. (Speaking of needing a drink-have any of you REALLY listened to Sarah Palin?? A heartbeat away. OMG.) Oops. I'm supposed to stay away from politics. Just vote, everyone. It's so important.
Okay, coffee.

Hi D1,
Many years ago I bought my daughter a brand new computer and when she went off to college it died, it also was 2 years old. So for $50 I bought a new hard drive and her boyfriend now ds in law put it in the tower. Do you know anyone who can do that for you? That would be the answer to your problems. My daughter is still using the same computer. I'm so sorry I did not mention to you sooner. I had bad chemo brain last night.

Hi Everyone,
just putting a few more post up, since I was too tired to finish last night.
Norma Please give Julie a hug for me and Julie please give Norma a hug for me too. That's so great for you 2.
Carol You are right we all have been so blessed to meet each other on line. Last year we all were bewildered and confused and somehow we all comforted each other and educated each other. Now look at us, we all are marathon walkers and taking better care of ourselves and I really think maybe enjoying life maybe more. Maybe somehow this is a path that we must take. We all met the devil head on and beat the devil. Sorry about your friends mom, big hugs to her {{{{{{Hugs}}}}}}} Oh how is dear dog doing?
paula How is ds new job going? Glad your port is going bye bye.
Kris Yeah the port is gone!
Jenn When is your knee surgery? Hoping soon you will be a happy pink jewel. God Bless.
LG Good one about the sopranos wedding, it was funny. I'm glad your MUGA numbers are good.
I was so happy to hear that Wendy and Therese and Norma are well. I wish we could hear form Dana and Vettegal and the others. Wishing you positive vibes.
Carol and Kimberly I'm glad your ports are also going bye bye.
Therese 2 walks in one year. you go girl, sending lots of energy your way. The lucheon sounded like fun.
I'm also happy everyones test and scans are having great results. D1 Glad your Brca test were all neg. My daughter is from Jewish decent, maybe one day she should have that test done. Yes, this new job thing has put me in overtime stress. I think these last 2 wks have been hell for me, and I'm been trying to heal. It has been worse than child birth. Good one.
Cathy It sounds like it was a wonderful cation. Now ds is playing football and keeping you very busy.

Yippeeee -- I finally got it to work!! Not sure what the deal is - it took me four more tries and two different computers! Anyone else having this issue?? Here's my post from last night -- I'll write more shortly!
Happy Friday, Jewels! This was the LOOOOONGEST week ever!! It just wouldn't end! And what's scary is that next week is Homecoming week and those always seem long. Not sure I can handle two of those in a row!
Kimberly - loved the Sutter story - thanks for sharing. I hope you had a good week at school this week and that you remembered to EAT! That can get frustrating --- that and trying to find time to go to the bathroom!! Subs can surely be frustrating, can't they?! It always amazes me to find out one didn't do what was asked - I don't get it. We have a "live" gradebook too - as of Spring semester last year. I do like it b/c it seems to help increase parental involvement, but be prepared for some that will check grades several times a DAY and wonder why test grades aren't posted right after giving a test!
Carol - YOU TOTALLY ROCK!!!!!! I got my photo collage today and absolutely LOVE IT!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! That had to take you forever to do. I hope things are going better with ds. I worry that mine will turn into one of those teenagers who doesn't care much about school - I have a brother like that and he's challenging my dad daily! Ok - I must have missed part of a post somewhere b/c I didn't know you pup was sicky-poo! Hope Schatzie is feeling better.
Yep - Santa's bringing me some new nips for Christmas! Exciting, huh??!! Speaking of nips - hope Kathy's surgery went well this week! "Dog ears" - as my ps calls them - are the "extra" skin/tissue on the side of the new boob, under the armpit. Mine is quite excessive and bothersome so he's going to "suck" it out. I asked if he could go ahead and "suck" out some of my excessiveness in my gut, butt, or thighs while he was at it!! He didn't quite go for that.
I think Peoria is about 3.5 hours from me. Let me know the dates for Nationals and I'll get it on my calendar!
Glad your bone density test came back good! And jealous of your upcoming trip too. Although, my Thanksgiving involves spending the entire weekend at my sister-in-laws and we shop for over 20 hours on Friday/Saturday after Thanksgiving. We have such a blast and I'm really looking forward to it this year!
D1 - hope the computer shopping is going well. Dell is a great choice! We have them in all of our labs and love them - I have five labs in my department and we only have problems occasionally and that's with them being used seven hours a day, five days a week! Hope your mammo goes without a hitch! No mls yet - I emailed my step-mom earlier this week about it and she's now coming to the conclusion that she may not be able to represent us as she would like, with the needed amount of advertising, etc..... just a TAD frustrated!! Dh is now "hem-hawing" about keeping it on the market - the economy issue is not helping things. I'm to the point where I'm not going to even push it anymore and I'll just go with the flow - it's just not worth all the added stress.
Paula - YIPPEEEEEE on all the good news you've had lately!! I'm certainly keeping you and Ed both in my prayers and sending lots of positive energy your way. You are truly one remarkable woman - I can't believe you're already getting ready for another trip with your students!!
Cathy - sounds like your son's college is very "parent-friendly" - that's great! I always loved Parents Weekend when I was in college. Hope your training continues to go well!
Sherry - glad you got good path results! I can't believe you're already walking 2 miles so soon after your surgery!! Take it easy and don't overdo it. That's wonderful that you got a special album from your daughter and her dh. That was very thoughtful of them. Glad you finally got the phone hooked up - that sure sounded frustrating!
Therese - good to see you!! Sounds like you have a busy weekend planned! Hope you enjoy yourself and have a super birthday!! Enjoy!
I'm very proud of the students at my school - our volleyball team did a fundraiser for breast cancer and collected "spare change" from students during lunches this last week. They called it "Volley for a Cure" and at their game on Oct. 1, they played in pink shirts, with a pink/white ball, pink balloons all over the gym and they sold all kinds of breast cancer-related merchandise. All of the girls chose someone they were "playing for" who had been impacted by breast cancer and had been an inspiration to them. One of my students chose to play for me - I was very touched by that. Anyway, they don't have the total amount calculated yet, but last I heard, it was over $3500!! They are donating all of the money to the Susan G. Komen foundation.
Well, gtg grade some papers!! Take care, girls!
Julie
