The star, who has appeared in a string of Hollywood films and won an Emmy for her role as Rachel's sister in Friends, said she faced a "tough choice".

But she managed to joke about her situation in her first interview since the diagnosis was announced earlier this month, saying she was looking forward to reconstructive surgery over the next eight months.

"I'm going to have cute boobs 'til I'm 90, so there's that," she told ABC News program Good Morning America.

"I'll have the best boobs in the nursing home. I'll be the envy of all the ladies around the bridge table."

Doctors found cancer present in only one breast but she elected to have both removed after testing positive for the BRCA1 breast cancer gene.

Her mother, now 67, is also a breast cancer survivor. Due to her family history, she had regular mammograms from the age of 30 and the disease was detected following a biopsy.

Applegate is now "100 per cent clear and clean", she said. "It did not spread. They got everything out, so I'm definitely not going to die from breast cancer."

A double mastectomy was "the most logical option", she explained. "I didn't want to go back to the doctors every four months for testing. I just wanted to be rid of this whole thing.

"So this was the choice that I made and it was a tough one."

She said: "Sometimes I cry and sometimes I scream and I get really angry and I get really, you know, into wallowing in self-pity sometimes. And I think that's all part of healing, and anyone who's going through it out there: it's ok to cry.

"It's ok to fall on the ground and just scream if you want to."

Applegate had the surgery three weeks ago. "I've laughed so much in the last three weeks. I love living, and I really love my life, and I knew that from this moment on it was only going to be good. Yeah, I'll face challenges, but you can't get any darker than where I've been."

In the US, Applegate is best known for her roles in Married With Children and Samantha Who? She resumes filming on the latter in September.

The actress will also appear in a one-hour TV special, Stand Up To Cancer, which airs on September 5 and will raise money for cancer research.

I hadn't heard that.  What a difficult decision for her, but good for her for talking about it openly.  I can certainly understand her decision, given that she's only 36 and BRCA1 positive.  The odds of her being diagnosed a 2nd time would have been extremely high if she had not done this.  And since her mother had BC, she's probably put a lot of thought into this over the years.

I wonder what type of reconstruction she'll be having.

Beesie, the interview she did on GMA this morning she said that she would be undergoing reconstruction for the next 8-9 months. You can see her interview on abcnews.com.

But did she say what type of reconstruction?  It all takes 8-9 months.

I think I would have done the same thing. She spoke of having perky boobs in the nursing home...here is a little joke along those lines.

Someone gave me a copy of the National Enquirer re John Edwards two weeks ago~~~and it had the report about her double mastectomy. Turns out the Enquirer is right about a lot of things!

I fear Christina needs more education before she becomes a BC ambassador, but I do admire her candor.

I believe she may know more than we thought, her mom went through this. Her mom may have taught her well. I have been talking to my granddaughter who is 14 about checking her breast well when she is older.

But I do agree she needs the education, and it's seems she has had to get a crash course of info in a very short time.

And as a sister myself I really got busy learning all I could about my particular case. And I was a very fast learner.

I also chose the bilateral mastectomy for much of the same reasons as she did, even though I didn't know whether I was brca positive or not.

Just wanted to ask if anyone saw Christina at the Emmys last night?  I didn't watch but have seen some photos of her at the Emmys and she looked so wonderful.  What a girl!

I thought the dress was hideous from a design standpoint... but her body looked fabulous.  The dress was one shoulder a symmetrical and the bare side of the dress was cut beautifully along her expanders.

She always had small breasts, and the expanders look to be almost inflated at what she once was.

I thought the earrings were over powering, but I loved her hair and makeup, and she did a great job when she was presenting-- when she poked a little fun with the other presenter, just b/c she had cancer, she still was gonna kick his butt... love it

I posted elsewhere right after the show: she looked divine and most critics put her as best-dressed. Perhaps I should be worried that I thought she looked perfect? Surprised

From non-fashionista Tina, I thought the cut and drape of the dress was beautifull and classic, not to forget classy, but I hated the fabric weave with the floral bit and, really, the dress did not need that poof at the side.

The overall package was just lovely, to my eye.  Including the confident smile.  I hope she was feeling as confident as she looked.

Oh, I know-her smile was fantastic.  Ryan Seacrest stumbled over "her experience" in the past few months, and she handled it with grace and dignity.  She said, "I have a pretty dress on and I haven't done that in months."

I also thought the dress lovely but also agree that the bow on the side was a bit much.  Not wild about the little I can see of her shoes, but she looks wonderful.  Class act.

I like the dress, I just wouldn't want part of my dress dragging on the floor (suppose if I could afford a dress like that it wouldn't really matter tho).  The shoes, I would need to see the heal.  She looks well, it's amazing what no chemo or radiation will do for ones healthy glow.  I like the earrings, probably because I like dangling earrings...wear them often.

I also love the dress except for the bow and fluff dragging on the ground. She can pull of that lovely shade of baby blue. I missed when she presented but saw her in the audience, I was flipping between the emmy's and Masterpiece Theater but saw it in the highlights on Monday.

I don't know, but I see a little sadness in her eyes, kind of like I have.  Anyone else see it?  Maryiz

I do agree, Maryiz.  I noticed a hint of discomfort in her eyes.  It was especially noticable when they did the slo-motion shots on the E Fashion Police show.  She was smiling gracefully and obviously accepting the "You look lovely for someone who just had their cancerous breasts removed" clumsy statements with tons of class, but I think she didn't want that kind of attention.

I don't see sad, I see brave in the face of adversity.  She probably didn't want to deal with her bc being announced publicly, maybe I just see that because I would not want my bc all over the news.  Her privacy in this battle was stolen from her.

I think she announced it because she believed it would be helpful. She had to have known that everyone will be looking at her bosom for awhile. That is certainly what I've experienced; no one ever noticed it before!!!Wink

As for the dress, remember this was the Red Carpet, not your average black tie evening! If everyone is looking at you, pull out all the stops!!

Speaking on the red carpet, she told reporters: 'Things happen, and you have to really, really embrace your life. It's a great day... I've got a pretty dress on and lipstick, and (it's) something I haven't done in two months... Things happen, and you have to sit back and really, really embrace your life.
