Great news, I am not HER neu, but happy to see progress for any of us.  I truly believe if we could get everyone to say a prayer for a cure one day, one minute, a designated time, it would make a difference.  Anyone in?  Maryiz

Research suggests new breast cancer vaccine may completely eliminate HER2-positive tumors.

UPI (9/16) reports that "Wayne State University researchers say a breast cancer vaccine completely eliminated HER2-positive tumors in mice -- without any toxicity," according to a paper published in the Sept. 15 issue of Cancer Research. The Detroit-based team also suggests that their vaccine "might potentially be used in cancer-free women to prevent initial development of these tumors."

HER2 "receptors promote normal cell growth, and are found in low amounts on normal breast cells," the BBC (9/15) explained. But "HER2-positive breast cells can contain many more receptors than is typical, promoting a particularly aggressive type of tumor that affects up to 30 percent of all breast cancer patients." Although "there are drugs to treat this form of the disease, including Herceptin (trastuzumab)," they generally "do not work for a significant proportion of patients."

Moreover, "tumors can also become resistant to treatment," the U.K.'s Daily Mail (9/16) points out. But lead study author Wei-Zen Wei said that the vaccine "may be the answer for women with these tumors who become resistant to the current therapies." He added, "The vaccine could potentially eliminate the need to even use these therapies."

The new vaccine "includes 'naked' DNA, genes that produce the HER2 receptor, and an immune system stimulant," HealthDay (9/15, Doheny) reported. When this vaccine was "delivered...into the leg muscles of mice that were later given HER2-positive tumors, the gene made a huge supply of HER2 receptors that activated the immune system," which then mounted "an attack against the HER2-positive receptors." Wei said that the "results were striking," because "none of them grew tumors." MedPage Today (9/15, Bankhead) and WebMD (9/15, DeNoon) also covered the story.

This is so hopeful!  I pray all the time for a cure for this dreaded disease but would love to be a part of our mighty sisterhood all praying at the same time.  Maryiz...want to rally the troops?  Maybe everyday at a certain time or everyday during October at a certain time.

This is truly remarkable.  This would eliminate the need for chemo for her2+ bc patients and that is a good thing.

word of prayer.  I will continue to fall on my knees for this, not just for myself, but for my sisters, mother, daughters, friends...  Where 2 or 3 gather together in prayer.

GrammyNancy, I think October would be great.  Anyone care to designate a day, time when we all quietly stop for one minute and say a prayer for a cure.  The more, the merrier.  More powerful.  Anyone in or care to designate time, I'm in.  Maryiz

How about 10/31 or 11/4 (friday before elections or election day) so we can pray as one for our countries future and breast cancer together? Just a thought...

FloridaLady, either day sounds good to me.  It would be great if we could get as many people as possible to say a prayer at the same time.  It's power. Love to you, MAryiz

FloridaLady, I started a new thread for prayer for BC cure in Oct.  2008.  Other women have responded and one suggested Nov. 1 because that is All Saints Day.  I really think that would be powerful.  Think of all of the ears who will be tuned in on that day. MaryizP.

P.S. The thread is ALL PRAYING FOR A CURE. OCT. 2008

Hi, Deb, we are praying on Nov. 1st because it us All Saints Day.  Some have suggested praying that day when you can and others have recommended 12 central time.  Go to that thread for most up to date information.  We believe this could be truly powerful.  Thanks for joining, Maryiz
