in my neighborhood - they spring into action

I'm really proud of my neighbors.  Tonight some poor girl was assaulted and tossed out of a car on our street.  According to one person the car backed up and deliberately hit her.  She yelled "help me, help me" and fortunately it is a warm night and many had their windows open.  It was raining steadily but within 2 minutes 5-10 people were there and shortly there were another 10 with umbrellas to shelter her, on cell phones to emergency services, one kneeling at her head offering comfort and getting information, I was holding her shirt down because she was afraid people were laughing at her because her pants were not covering her butt.  Others were redirecting traffic or assuring her that no one here was laughing, that the ambulance was coming, no her mother wouldn't be too mad at her, etc.  The girl was in a lot of pain, broken leg at least, probably pelvis - I doubt she heard much of what we said but at least she knew people were around.  Perhaps more surprisingly when the EMR people arrived they asked us to back off (except the info gatherer) and everyone did.  They might have been sorry because we took our umbrellas with us.

I thought we could use a good neighborhood story.
