Buzz Cut ?
As I approach my third year survivor-ship anniversary . ( Sept 26TH) I was thinking back to the way I took control of the hair loss. First thing I did was donate my hair to locks of love. About 9 inches was gone even before the treatments ever started.
I remember my long blonde ( Box blonde, ) locks being put into a rubber band, and the hairdresser having a very hard time cutting through the thickness of my hair.
I wasn't sad really, and felt a great sense of pride knowing I was helping a child going through this horrific time at such a young age, when all they should be worrying about was being a child.
I then had a cute little hair style for a couple of weeks. On day 14, (yes the magic number) my hair started to fall out. I remember tugging on it everyday seeing if it still had that hold.
As soon as it didn't , I had my girlfriend cut it into a real short do! I just wanted to see what it would look like as it grew back.
I wore it to my second treatment, sprayed with a ton of hairspray. After that came the BUZZ CUT PARTY!!!!!
I filmed it and everyone was there. My husband did the honers this time. After it was buzzed I remember my head being sore as I tried to sleep.. So the next day I soaked my head down with baby oil and put a shower cap on. I let it stay on for hours.
After my scalp was really soft, I got into the shower with one of those triple blade razors and shaved my head as bald as I could.
It was not till , maybe two weeks later, that I had the melt down. Do you recall your first steps of the hair journey ?
Please share......
BTW~ I have not watched that footage to this day. I plan to on the 26Th with my husband. I'm sure I will have some strong emotions, both sadness and laughter. On that same tape is the Christmas Party with my head painted as a Christmas ornament. Now that is some fun with the family, at my expense .
I will look for those pictures, if I can find them I'll post later.

Hi, Mary-Lou, I do remember the day I got my buzz cut. The night before, and I think it was about 2 weeks after my 1st chemo tx, I was sitting on the sofa watching TV. I ran my fingers through my shoulder length hair and my fingers were full of hair. I had bought a hair net from TLC when I first knew I was going to have chemo, so I wore that to bed that night, nott ready to give it all up. The next morning I asked my dh to do the honors and off it came. Down to the scalp. After that there were just tiny pieces of hair that would come out into my turban or night cap.

My husband did the honors for me also around day 14 or 15 when it started coming out by the handfuls. I remember with my do rag on my head and going out for lunch after an onc appt, feeling sick, looking bad, being bald and thinking none of these girls really appreciate their hair. I think you have to go through something like this to really appreciate it. Congrats Mary, hope you have lots more years of being cancer free.

Thanks girls, and spar thanks for the good wishes. It is hard to believe three years has already gotten here. Sometimes the pain of it all seems as tho it was yesterday . I hope that the 2008 girls soon have good days as well with the hair stories far behind them.

Mary-Lou, I donated to locks of love 3 years ago and I'm waiting for a few more inches to do it again. It's a really good feeling. I looked great bald, but I look horrible with short hair so I want to leave my hair long enough for a pony tail before I do it again.

Hi Amy, I still have my long hair, I just can't seem to get it cut that short again. The chemo curls are still on the end. ( And I have had it trimmed) I can straighten it now or leave it alone and let it dry natural.
I still need to post some pictures. May get to that tonight after Michael leaves for work.
Are you back to normal these days, after all the non BC events in your life?
