Horrible Hunger!!

Options

I know it is the dex causing the hunger, but today it is worse than ever! They supposedly cut my dose in half yesterday, but I still could not sleep until 3:00 a.m. and now my hunger is absolutely OUT OF CONTROL!!! I only got 3 hours of sleep and am fighting off a cold so I am sure that doesn't help either. It feels like I could open up the cupboards and the refrigerator and snarf everything down. I feel so out of control with my appetite!!!  Frown

Keep some low cal snacks in the fridge is you are worried about weight or have a great big bowl of ice cream if your not.  If your body needs food let it have it.  It won't be foreever.  Hope things get better.  I know all the way through chemo and all the other drugs I craved certain foods and felt like if I didn't get them I would just smash something and boy did my taste change in food.  So I feel for ya but just remember this to shall pass.  bless you. gentle hugs.

I know, the hunger from that stuff can be a horrible beast. I remember and I'm still working on losing the weight a year later! I didn't feel like healthy snacks, all I craved were comforting/high calorie foods, foods that I normally wouldn't think to eat. The cravings were crazy as Spar2 said.

Make a list of some foods that appeal to you that you feel good about eating and that are lower in calories and keep them handy--maybe sometimes they can stave off that out of control feeling.

some suggestions: Applesauce, lowfat puddings, rice cakes, chicken noodle soup

Just do your best with how you feel. This will all pass and you will be back to normal someday soon! Hugs

I agree that I don't crave things that would be good for me. I crave pop and fast food and chips. I would love to be craving salads and fruits. It is difficult. I also caught my children's cold and now I feel even more miserable. I am going to the store after I take them to school and buy a bunch of soup and crackers and pretzels. Maybe that will be a little better.

    Thanks guys!

    Cathie,

I know how you feel. Luckily it only lasts about 3 days. I ate so much my stomach would hurt and my brain would be telling me EAT! I thought I might burst my stomach. I ate a lot of fruit....helped with the constipation. I never ate fast food but that is what I craved. And chocolate. I would eat 3 huge bowls of raisen bran for breakfast. We won't go into what else I ate....don't have enough time. Hang in there. I finished my chemo 3/13/08. I had gained 27 lbs. I am back to my pre-chemo weight. But I still need to lose 12 lbs to be at the goal I was reaching before chemo. When I could, I walked. Towards the end, when I went on Taxotere, I lost my sense of taste and that helped with the eating. But by then, I was so sick, I could barely walk across a room so any form of exercise was out. I had really bad reaction to the Tax but it was not normal. Lucky me....

I lost 20 pounds after my diagnosis, but I was overweight to begin with. I could not lose weight for several years, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was because of the immense amount of hormones flowing in my body. I have gained 5 pounds back here and there, but then try to back off and lose it again. I am bald, have one boob and dark circles under my eyes. I don't want to gain all of the weight back I had before all of this as well.

I am a person who hardly ever gained weight and kept it and I am done with the chemo and have all this weight some which is fluid and the Taxotere makes food taste bad so I am not eating allot now but the weight is still there and a red rash on the face so I look so pretty puffed up I don't even like mirrors anymore. If your on Taxotere your appetite will go away after a few doses I made Taco's and couldn't eat them metal taste.... Good luck this puts all our problems in prospective before BC...

    4thefather,

Try to eat more protien.  Chees, peanute butter.  Protien helps curve the hunger.  Carbs just make the hunger worse.  I know this now, but durning chemo I ate mint milano cookies and m&m.  Gained 10lbs.  Check out some protein shakes.  I get some from curves that are't bad in calories.  I mix torani mix with it, and it gives it a flavor kick.  You can get the torani mix at BevMo.  They are sugar free, there is no calories and come in several flavors.   Good luck.. We all feel your hunger pains.

I am really, really trying to eat the right things. I didn't eat dinner last night at all, but I also have a cold and that is helping (as miserable as I am) to keep the hunger down. I have been eating peanut butter toast for the extra protein.
