Who has gummies (cohesive gel implants)?
Hi there. I am having a mastectomy and immediate recon this fall. I have been trying to research the pros and cons of the new silicone cohesive gel implants. My ps recommends the gummies and says her patients have been very satisfied with them. However, I know some people still have concerns about them. I am interested in hearing women's first hand experiences with these type of implants. I am quite thin and small breasted so I am concerned that saline will look fake on me, but I may go with it if I do not feel comfortable with the gummies.
So, my questions are as follows:
How long have you had them?
How do they "feel" (weight, texture, etc.) once implanted (Esp. if you've had a unilateral. How does a gummy "balance" your real breast?
Have you had any contracture or rupture problems? After how long? Outcome?
Have you had any other health concerns with them?
Thanks

Hi LibraGirl,
I have bilateral gummies. Had the exchange 5 weeks ago. Mine are the anatomical shaped ones.
I'm happy with them so far. It's a little hard to say when I have nothing to compare them with (ie other silicon or saline). Mine are definitely firm compared to my real breasts, not hard but firm, so they do live up to their 'gummy bear' name as far as consistency goes. They're soft enough to push your fingers into them but I wouldn't describe them as soft or squishy if that makes sense. There is no noticable movement when I walk so it feels like I'm wearing a comfortable but supportive bra all the time. That doesn't bother me but I don't know how others may find it
I do feel secure that they will hold their shape and symmetry which is important to me, especially as I am small (5'4") fairly thin (~120#) and I'm 52yo so my skin is a bit thin over my somewhat bony chest so there's no fat to disguise any asymmetry that may occur in the cleavage area. So far it's quite even so I'm very happy about that.
Mine are not too big (350cc mod plus profile) and don't feel heavy at all. In clothes I look exactly the same as I did before, maybe a little better in 'perkiness'. I can fit into all my old size 34D bras but they're only for looks, I need no support at all. I did a lot of gym/weight training pre-bm and I've just gone back to cardio training now. I feel my posture has improved because I feel 'lifted' and supported in the chest area, so that's been a bonus.
Hope that's answered some of your questions. Feel free to pm me if you want to know anything more specific. I've only had them 5 and half weeks but I'd be happy to give you my experience so far.
Best wishes,
Farrah

Boy, I wish I lived in a place where I could get Gummies. I've read and read about them, and I'm so convinced that they are the state of the art. I'll end up with a regular Mentor silicone, and that's good too.
It's funny, whenever anyone says they are getting Gummies, I know they are from California, Texas or outside the USA. I wish the FDA would open the gates on those puppies.

Hi There: I'm not a regular here and I haven't posted in a long time. I have gummies. I had my bilaterals last September and the exchange in January. My PS really encouraged the gummies so I went ahead with them. I am really glad I did. In clothes, they look so, so real. Not "implantish" at all. I am really skinny too and was worried about how they would look. They feel exactly as Farrah posted..firm but not hard. No bounce but that's ok. Totally perky. I feel that they are a little heavy sometimes but most of the time they are comfy. I think they are safer than the other silicone. I was also in a really bad car accident about 2 months after my exchange and these babies did not rupture. SO I guess you could say I crash tested them. Thumbs up! From everything I read they are really the best for reconstruction. In fact, anyone who finds out that I have had recon just stares with their mouths open if that gives any indication of what they look like. Mine took several months to really "settle" but I think that is different for everyone. I say go for it. They are really worth it. BTW Morning...they have clinical trials for gummies all over the US. If you can find one that works for you in regards to location, you can get into one. That's how I got mine!

I am also with Farrah.
I had bilat, proph on left. Didn't need expanders (fantastic surgeons!!! planned a skin sparing from the start, blessed be), and I have mentor gummies since June. they look real. they bounce a little... No need for support, bras are a *nice to have*, but I can wear close to my original size - today I am a 36 D.
they feel so real... even my boyfriend votes for them and say they "feel" real, and not had at alll... *blush*

I have had cohesive gel implants since june/05, no problems at all, feel a little cold but that is ok because of the hot flash world I now live in.
Nice and perky, no real need for a bra but I wear one anyhow out of habit I guess. There is a bit of bounce and that adds to the natural look of them I think.
I am satisfied with them, they are used all the time in reconstruction here in Canada, they are not approved for augmentation though.
Any ?'s, pls PM

I am going to get the gummies too. I think they are from Inamed. Does anyone know if their gummies are Inamed gummy anatomicals or Mentor gummy anatomicals?
I would also appreciate any information anybody has!

Darcy,
Mine are Mentor gummy anatomicals

Thanks Farrah,
I have heard great things about mentor gummy anatomicals. I'm glad you like them and I hope I can get them in the US somewhere!

Thanks to all for your responses!
Farrah and dffclt - it sounds like our overall builds are similar (tho I am a small 34A). My upper body is particulary thin and thin skinned (the outline of my port and catheter are very clearly visible on my bony chest), so it helps to hear about your experiences with these implants so far. Dffclt - glad to hear they did not rupture in the accident. Hope you had no other injuries either!
Lilith - your bf's response is very encouraging!
Morning you are right - I'm in Vancouver, Canada and my ps has been using these for quite awhile.
Dragonlady - good to hear you have had them for so long with no real issues. I also like to hear that a bra may be optional!
Darcy, I have not really explored the brands. What are the differences? Also, I am not really clear on the whole "low profile" "high profile" "anatomical" etc. choices. Anyone have good info or resources on this? I will ask my ps next apptmt.
Thanks everyone!

Hi LibraGirl,
The difference in brands I think is mentor silicone gummy anatomicals are used all over the world except in the US. I don't know why or if they are being checked by the US FDA. Right now here in the US we can only get Inamed silicone gummy anatomicals and only if you participate in a trial. There are 40 doctors in the US who are participating in the Inamed trial. I have heard good things about both. I would like to see and feel the difference but can't because mentors aren't here yet. I have seen mentors in women who got them in Australia or Canada and they look beautiful. The pictures look very natural and they match up great if you are having one reconstructed side and one side reduced or lifted. Sometimes the doctors will do a reduction and lift on the opposite side and put a smaller gummy anatomical in there to match things up on both sides. I wish the US had mentors and I would like to know why we can't get them here. If you are in Canada then you can probably get them. The profiles are on the mentor websites. The specs are also on the Inamed site.

Hello,
Just wanted to say that I think the gummies are catching on as I will be having gummies put in here in Virginia after the expanders are removed. I am having a bilateral with immediate reconstruction, and rads later on. Has anyone had radiation after expanders??
-
Mine are Mentor, high profile, teardrop shaped cohesive gel implants, 475cc's I think (?) Wow that information was burned into my brain in the beginning, I really had to think about it, I guess that's a good thing, breast cancer is not first and foremost in my brain any longer. I have unveiled the boobs to my fellow nurses at work and they can't believe how natural they look and feel, if it wasn't for the faded mastectomy scars and the fact that they are right up there, it would be hard to tell. When I am in a bra or bathing suit top you would never ever know.
Best wishes, Tina

I have a 800 cc high profile anatomical shaped gummie. L breast only. Right had a lift. Implant is much firmer than my own breast. Cannot go braless because my 50 year old breast does not stand up. Implant side is flatter on the end than real breast. That became less apparent after nipple and tatoo. L side feels slightly tighter, but not really any different than the tightness that was there after the mastectomy alone. I didn't have recon. until a year after the mastectomy.. It's not perfect, but nothing but my original god made breast would be. After 1 year without a breast I must say, I am happy with the results. Looks normal under a bra and shirt. Cleavage is symmetrical and great.

I just had mine gummy bears removed last July. They almost killed me and would have had I not done it. Still dealing with lingering problems and some allergies but definitely recovering and SO much better. Only had them 3.5 years and got sick after 2.5 years. Came hard and with little warning. Straight to toxic shock. Horrible. DO NOT GET IMPLANTS. They kill. They are toxic!!

Healing - It appears that no one has posted in this thread for 5 years, but I am very interested in your comment. Do you smoke, drink, eat meat, drink milk, wear tampons, eat out of plastic bowls, have any clothes or furniture made of leather...? toxic is subjective. Be more specifc. What was the allergy involved, and what is your case for thinking we are all at risk for the same side effects?
-
I just had the gummy bears placed on 7/3/14, following a bilateral mastectomy. I too am interested in what your issues were. I had one migrate up into my neck by the time I had arrived in my room from the operating room. I had repair surgery last week. Two surgeries in 21 days, at my age has taken a toll on me. I was told that they will look different from each other. They are swelling everyday. I am so uncomfortable. Not happy this first month, but I'm reading comments and hoping mine improve as others have seen.

I have Mentor 450cc gummies and am very pleased with them. I had my exchange surgery in February. The feel soft and I can go braless or wear a push up if I want cleavage. I have had no issues or concerns.
