Read any good books lately?

Options

I mean other than cancer books. I am reading Rebel Without A Minivan by Tracy Beckerman. It is a collection of her newspaper columns and it is really funny (especially for anyone with a husband and/or kids). Since it is a collection of newspaper columns each chapter is short. Sort of like Erma Bombeck for the new millenium. As for cancer books, I like Crazy, Sexy Cancer Tips by Kris Carr. Any other suggested reading?

My sister is having her first round of Taxotere tomorrow.  Normally she would be a nervous wreck but she tells me the day went by fast because she is absorbed in Savannah Breeze by Mary Kay Andrews.  (And it gets 4.5 stars on Amazon and is a New York Times bestseller, so it's not just her!)

I love to read! I've read so many good books but, I give them away after I've read them and now, can't remember a single title or author!!! Damn Teflon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wait.........The most recent was about a little girl...ha! The Time Traverlers Wife....that was a great, fast, easy read. Very different.  Very good. I would highly recommend. Also, BLINK was a good book. Especially good if you are in business.

I also recently bought some used books for less than $4 used on Amazon (I'll never buy new again!) at the recommendation of a friend. She said autobiographies were a quick and interesting read if it was about someone you liked.  I read Valerie Bertanelli and Tatum O'Neill's. Both very easy, fast reads and both, very entertaining.

    Great thread!!!! Hugs, Traci

I love to read and my family and friends kept me well stocked in books after my surgery as I was going through a book a day to stave off boredom of being home all day.  I also really enjoyed Time Travelers Wife so would recommend it too.

I just fiished "March" which takes one of the characters (the father) from "Little Women" and tells what happened to him while he was off at war during the same timeframe as the Little Women storyline. "Little Women" was a favorite when I was a kid - so I enjoyed this account of another character from the book.

The Glass Castle by  Jeanette Walls . This is a true story about one family ,particularly the 4 children, who survived unbelievable challenges due to the dysfunctional nature of the parents. Although this may sound like a "downer" of a book ..you find yourself riveted to their misadventures and their ability to come through it all .....I was transfixed .

Texgirl, The Glass Castle is fantastic. I read it when it was first published because of book review in the Washington Post. (I was familiar with author's column). I recommended it to everyone, though I imagine some couldn't get past the premise. The strength of children.......

Any of the Southern women authors, such as Dorothea Benton Frank, Cassandra King (wife of Pat Conroy), Patricia Gaffney (The Saving Graces), as well as Elizabeth Berg, are just the ticket.

These have saved me during recovery.

Jodi Picoult is my favorite author.  I couldn't put "My Sister's Keeper" down.  I'm not a big fan of Historical fiction; but a friend gave me "The Other Boleyn Girl" and I couldn't put it down.

     Happy reading!

Spar, we are mystery sisters. I'd gotten "T is for Trespass" with Kinsey Millhone before surgery; decided it was too heavy with fried brain. I think I'm ready now!

I just got a Stephanie Plum short book; she calls it a " between the numbers" book. Better check to be sure you haven't missed it. Plum Lovin and Plum Lucky. Wikipedia has a great site for Stephanie, reprising all the characters~~~useful when you have CRS!!!!

I am slowly reading new Patricia Cornwell, Book of the Dead, mainly because she's  moved to Charleston. Gory as usual, but fascinating! I also have A Blackbird Sisters mystery by Nancy Martin~~~wacky family in Philly, nice and light and fun.

    Enjoying the recommendations!

I love all of Mary Kay Andrew's books...Savannah Breeze was great and the others were just as good.  Jodi Picoult is another favorite.  An author I discovered this past summer is Lorna Landvik--I read "Angry Housewives Eating Bonbons" and loved it; read all her other books I could find.

Also, I've started reading Greg Isles...good murder mysteries.

I enjoyed Water for Elephants.  I have just read Those Who Saved Us, historical fiction about the lives of civilian Germans during WW II.  The book was over 400 pages and I read it in 2 days. I love Pat Conroy's books too.

Thanks for all the great suggestions!  I have two to add:

Five Lessons I Didn't Learn From Breast Cancer (and One Big One I Did); Shelley Lewis.  An irreverent, laugh out loud view of bc.  (My cousin, a 10-year bc survivor sent this one to me.)

Also, The Middle Place; Kelly Corrigan.  This one distracted me beautifully during my worst SE days following chemo tx #2.  Beautifully written book.  She had bc, but it's not the theme of the book, which is more about family and the identity and strength we get from them.  I highly recommend it!  (Sent to me by a dear friend who promised to send one equally as good for tx #3.  Will keep you all posted.)

I just finished " The Guernsey Literary and Potatoe Peel Pie Society" by mary Ann Shaffer.  Set just after world war 2 and a writer in London starts a correspondance with members of a "book club" that met during the 5 years that the Guernsey Island was occupied by the Germans.  Through the letters back and forth - you learn about the individual stories and hardships that the members experienced during the war.  Quirky characters, nice story line and while it was fiction - I enjoyed the historical setting.  Nice read.

    Hi!

    Great book suggestions!

I really enjoyed the books about Henry the VIII and his wives written by Phillipa Gregory.  I started out with "The Other Boleyn Girl" and was addicted.  And now that first session of "The Tudors" is available on DVD, it's great to watch the story develop and have some understanding about who the characters are.

I give these books by Phillipa Gregory a two thumbs up.

    (((hugs)))

If you haven't tried any Lisa Gardner books.........you've got to give her a try.  I have read all of her books except the most recent and they are fantastic!  They are alot like Jodi Picoult's books in that you cannot figure out the ending until the very end.  If you do figure out the main culprit, you can never figure out how he or she commits the crime.  Pick one up and you'll be hooked on this author before the first chapter ends.

Elizabeth...sending good vibes to you and many hugs for your upcoming surgery.

I've got to try some of these other authors that you gals have mentioned.  Thanks for the good tips!

These are not new books, but sometimes they sit around for a while before I get around to them, and it isn't always the newest ones first!

In An Instant by Lee & Bob Woodruff

How Starbucks Saved My Life by Michael Gates Gill

Saturday by Ian McEwan  (actually like any of his books)

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
