Going back to work.

Hi girls, :)

Now that my youngest child has started school full-time, I'm looking for work.  I am wondering how difficult that will be concerning my bc dx in 2002.  The towns and companies I've applied to require a physical before they hire you.  Assuming past bc will come up, I don't know what my chances for being hired are.  Since they offer health insurance, will I be looked over?  I've also been considering graduate school to work in SP or Edu.  I'm not sure I want to invest that much in a grad program if my chances of being hired are slim.  I haven't worked full-time in 10 years, so it's a big concern.  Thanks for your thoughts!

Start by looking into federal and state law concerning necessity of divulging personal, health information.  It's my impression that you are under no obligation to supply that info.  You may have to have a physical but I don't think the doctor is supposed to report on past illnesses, only current health.  But, check.  Laws do vary considerably from state to state.

Good luck finding the job of your dreams.

First, are you certain you will have to undergo a physical?   After my initial diagnosis, the job I applied for required a physical and it was not a big deal.  The doctor kind of brushed over the breast cancer part and told me I looked well.  I did get hired.

Good luck!  It's a big step to go back to work after 10 years. Congratulations.

they may require you to take a physical but not until you have a job offer on the table.  The offer cannot be withdrawn due to a prior bc history.  The only way you can be forced to undergo a physical prior to an offer is if the job is strenous and you need to be healthy.  I really think the physicals are there protection from workers comp claims.  They have your whole history on file and if you had prior back problems and fall at work trying to make a huge workers comp claim (which lots of people do) then they can bring out your pre employment physical to dispute the claim.  Relax and look for work.  I freaked out the first time I had to take a physical after my bc dx but it turned out to be no problem and my boss was never even told the outcome of the physical, it was just filed away in my personel file

It is against the law to hold that against you. The physical is only based on your ability to do the job now.

    Good luck!!
