Tiredness with Taxol?
I didn't feel so tired after the first treatment of Taxol, but I think this one is worse in the tiredness area. Has anyone else experienced that? Does it accumulate with the treatments? I was really hoping and praying that this course of treatment would allow me to do more things, but this tiredness makes it difficult.

Hi Cathie,
I'm sorry the Taxol is wearing you out. Do you have two treatments with Taxol left, or what is your regimen?
The reason I'm asking is because there might be light at the end of the tunnel, if you're like me. I had Taxotere, and it absolutely wasted me. Believe it or not, I found AC to be much, much easier than Taxotere -- why, I don't really know. Most women are relieved to be off the AC and to start a taxol drug; some of them even start to grow hair again.
Hopefully you'll be like me and find that AC is easier to get through; that is, if you are indeed going to a different regimen soon.
Hang in there!
Love,

The AC was horrible for me! I had 4 treatments of that first, and I was in bed for 7-9 days with it. I have had 2 treatments of Taxol and have 10 to go.

Cathie --
I think you need to talk to your medical team about all this. Although none of the chemotherapy treatments qualify as a fun thing to do on your vacation, they are -- for most of us -- feasable. We can get through them. I would usually spend about 2 days lying low after treatment, then gradually get better again. My third week was completely normal.
It's possible that some of the other drugs they're giving you with the Taxol (and with the AC) are contributing to your inability to deal with the chemo. Are you perhaps having trouble with the Dexamethasone? That one was nearly impossible for me, and I understand lots of other women have trouble with it too.
Again, this needs to be thoroughly discussed with your chemo people. You can't go on like this for ten more treatments.
Let us know what they say!
Love,
Annie

I don't think they can do anything about the tiredness. Someone told me they drank a lot of caffeine to make it through the weeks. I try not to drink much, if any, pop though. That is the biggest issue with this medication. Like I said before, I am SO thankful that I am not sick like I was before.

Were they giving you any predrugs before the taxol?
I was getting taxol with herceptin..Before the treatment they gave me Adivan, Pepcid, Benedryl and Decadron..the benedryl did me in, the nurses used to kid me about it because I always fell asleeep, and I slept when I got home. As for caffeine, I was told right from the beginning no caffeine.

I got steroids and premeds (not sure which anti-nausea it was) and Benadryl. Yes, the Benadryl is bad on me. I don't fall asleep, but I am wiped out that entire day. That doesn't make sense for 3-5 days later though. They would be out of my system by then wouldn't they?

hi, I just finished 8 out of 12 taxol/herceptin, and I have noticed that they do accumulate, because I have being feeling more tired every time, I get my infusion on Tuesdays and always knocks me down in the weekend.
I am so much wishing for it to be over, good luck to all.

Thanks Angie. If I am this tired after only 2, makes me wonder what I will be like when I get to your point. Yikes. I have been trying to walk a lot more on my good days. I am praying that exercise helps keep me going more.

Hi again Cathie --
I had a thought -- have they checked your electrolytes? I was woozy and light-headed and faint for days after my treatments, and finally demanded blood and urine tests at the urging of friends on this board. It turned out my sodium and potassium levels were very low. As soon as I started Gatorade, I felt a lot better.
Maybe you can ask for tests as well.
Thinking of you!

They check my blood work every week before treatments to clear me, but I don't think they have checked my urine. I have bought some bottles of water with electrolytes in them, but don't drink them every day. I have a very slight fever today and my nose is a little stuffed. Of course, I have been having problems with sinuses since my first chemo week. I also get up twice every night to go pee. I didn't have to do that before all of this started.

I am also on my second dose of Taxol, 7 more to go. I am definetly more tired this week than the first week. I heard it can get a little more each week as it builds up.

I found out today that they give me the dex as a premed even though I am not taking the pills anymore. I didn't know that. Guess I should ask more questions? I was up until 3 am this morning because I couldn't sleep. The nurse said they will try to cut the dose down as much as possible next time so I can sleep.

I noticed the post that mentioned it could be the other drugs vs. the chemo that could be the problem. The dexamethasone in high doses absolutely floored me. It felt like someone was sitting on my chest and I had a hard time breathing. Once the dose was cut in half I functioned just fine. I am still taking the AC and no Taxol yet and had heard the Taxol is much more tolerable. Bummer this might not be true. Good luck.

The dex definitely does it ( the labored breathing and lack of oxygen) ..and being wired and unable to sleep (for me..three nights) just adds to it. Also, don't underestimate the 'post adrenal-flurry' ie the let-down after the stress of facing another poisoning plug-in. THEN the nadir kicks in!! It's all part of the chemo-carousel. But do you know what? IT COMES TO AN END!! Mine finishes on Sept 26th and my relationship with the big C is so OVER!
Hang in there girls! You can all do it. XX Kerry
PS When the dex has you lying there awake, don't fight it..enjoy it. I use the alert-time to solve problems, pray for you all, and logically work through my plans for my next 50 years.. We HAVE to make the best of this shite!

They said they are going to decrease my dose of dex this week so it won't leave me so wired. I hope it works!!!
