continued Tissue expander pain!!

Hi Debbie and everyone. I had my exchange last Tuesday. Though the implants are definitely more comfortable than the expanders, I am still feeling some tightness with the "good" side and a lot of tightness (still bothers me when I cough or sneeze) with my "Frankenboob" (thanks for the expression, Debbie). The Frankenboob really has not resolved much from the expander stage--still flat, spreading toward the armpit and low (even with the pocket re-structuring done at exchange). Tissue is still reddened (and ps was somewhat worried at the tissue condition when working from the inside, so did a culture--no results yet--and I am on antibiotics again). Worst of all, goshdarnit, I have a drain again! (Only one, though, instead of four like the first time!) All in all, I am just anxious for drain removal and will try to be patient for the foobs' appearance to resolve (ps says it takes about three months to settle).
-
Don't tell me... drains during the exchange too? I guess when I think about it, it makes sense. I absolutely hate the drains!! My body takes forever to slow down to the little amount. What else should I know about the exchange? I'm just now getting used to the expanders.
Thanks,
lilyj

sneakypie,
Your drain surprised me too. What a cruel twist! My exchange surgery is 9/19. My bilat mast was 3/6 and I can't wait. I was surprised to learn it's day surgery. Is that usually the case? I'm planning on 2 weeks off from work and hope that's enough. My job involves using my arms.
Kerry, I'm much rounder, less pointy than I was natually so I have to assume that will be the case after the exchange? I have a found a bra at Kohl's here in the states that accomodates my new shape. It is Warner's 2013. Wonder if it will still fit after the surgery? I still want to look at the VS Ipex

I havent been on this thread for awhile. Cant believe since mid June, Sorry.
My Pain never went away...Just kind of settled at an even level.
I had my last fill a week ago. (400ccs) This one really made the pain Strong again. Havent slept much all week. I am waiting for confirmation on my Exchange date...Hoping for 9/22
I am on daily aspirin for a heart problem & dont feel comfortable taking anything for my pain.
Sneakypie. I hope your Culture comes back good.
Is your drain draining much?
Sandym- Yes the exchange is usually day surgery (out patient).
I have a Sept Reconstruction thread started...If any of you are having an Exchange or Expanders placed, etc...Please join us!

Hi Pam,
Thanks for the info about the Sept Reconstruction thread. I never thought to look. My exchange is scheduled for Sept 19.
-
You're welcome Sandy.
I added your Surgery date. And Bumped the thread so you can find it easier.

Don't want to alarm everyone--the drain was a surprise to me and not the norm. I think it was due to the mucking around to re-position the pocket. The ps told my husband, "Your wife will not be too happy when she wakes up..." (understatement). Drainage was about 80mL in the beginning and now, 1-1/2 weeks later, it is finally down to about 24. Tomorrow I go back for removal--ps said it could come out at 25 or less. I use my arms for work, too, sandym, and ps said ordinarily I could go back in a week, but because of arm usage and weight lifting, it would be two weeks. So... you will probably be okay.

Hi Ladies, I had my left breast exchange and right breast lifted yesterday. I can feel some relief on the exchange side but the lifted side is very sore and painful even with taking pain meds. I feel pulling in between the breast and I hope it is only because I'm swollen and that as I heal it will subside?? I do know that the rock expander is no longer under my arm and up by my collar bone. It's one pain to another but I prefer this kind of pain and pray it doesn't take long to go away. I'm wearing a sports bra round the clock and was told I can take a shower tomorrow but my lifted breast is so sore I don't know if I want to have any water running over it. I don't want to sound discouraging to all who have not had their exchange its just too soon to tell exactly how I feel. I pray for you all.
-
Where do I look for the reconstruction thread? I'm new to this.
Lilyj
-
lilyj,
go to forum index and click on 'Breast Reconstruction'.
From there you can see what is being discussed or click on the 'Post New Topic' button if you want to start a new topic.
Hope that helps.

Sandy,
I will look for the Warner's 2013 bra when I am on vacation in the US. Thanks for the tip. I also need to check out the VS Ipex, lots of women have mentioned that one.

Hello Ladies, Greetings from Michigan
Well it's been a while since I last visited you all, sooo sorry about that. Summer has been crazy in our house. I have some yucky news regarding my last surgery - the nipple recon. It didn't take, and they went flat.......what a bummer. So Nov. 24th the PS is going to try again. He has to wait for scar tissue to heal again. The other bad news is my left arm where they did my SNB. About 5 weeks ago I started to have pain in my armpit where my scar is, I seen the surgeon and they confirmed that I have scar tissue pushing on a nerve bundle and it is making my arm numb and is shooting pain down the outside of my arm to my fingertip and then also up my left shoulder, to the side of my neck and behind my ear. It's now pretty much 24/7 and a pain management team is setting up test at my hospital downstate. From what I understand the tests are really going to suck before even a surgery is schedule. I am so sick of needles and doctors.......I guess it doesn't help having a DH as a doctor as well, I always have told him not to sugar coat any thing. Anyways, that's a brief update. Hope everyone is doing well.
Love
Sharon -
Hi All,
I have not been on this thread for awhile but that does not mean I have not had lots of expander pain. Just posting on the bitching thread.
sneakypie (l love that name....I call my cat sneakypie) I am so sorry you had a drain are still in pain. From most women, they say the relief is immediate so I was expecting that. I guess I better lower my expectations.
Sharon, sorry about your arm numbness as well. Can they correct that before it permanantly damages the nerves. Where they took out my lymphs, I have complete numbness on the back of that arm. I hear that about nipples going flat from so many women that I wonder if I really want to go through that. I may do the 3D nipple tattooing instead.
Monica, sorry about your pain as well. Won't we all be glad when this is over?
I am so looking forward to my exchange. It is scheduled for 9/22/08 too Deejaboo! I had to stop the expansion process at 550cc which will leave me as a B instead of a C. It is just too painful. I had my last fill yesterday and was like a worm wiggling in bed and unable to get up due to the pain and unable to use my arms. Every little arm movement is agony. The PS had to give me something stronger with the last fill and my husband had to make a 130 mile round trip to pick up the written rx since the new drug laws prohibit them from calling it in. When I went yesterday, I made sure he gave me a refill to get me through the next two weeks. Anyway, he said I could come back in 2 years and get bigger boobs. Hell no, I am not having another surgery. With my previous bone cancer and reconstruction, two nasal surgeries, and 2 knee surgeries, the exchange will be surgery No. 17. I think that is enough for a lifetime.
I cried when I realized I would not even be the same size. I will be smaller. But I just could not take anymore fills. The expanders have filled to under my arms and shaving is hard. Well, I am trying to stay positive and it will be an incentive to get back into shape and lose 15 lbs so I can slim down to fit into my new boobs.
Sandym, I agree with you. I told him if they were less wide and more outward, they would be ok. My boobs weren't that wide. I joked and said they look like hamburger buns but the bun on that huge hamburger, that if you can eat it all, it's free! It is like a 5 lb hamburger. I want conical shaped breasts. He said I am getting the high profile which do extend outwards.
I was talking with a woman in the PS's office who said she was not having any pain??????
Well, I hope you all have a good day, and let me know Deejaboo if you do get 9/22/08. That will be cool having surgery on the same date!

Hi everyone,
I had bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction using tissue expanders on July 23rd so am nearly 5 weeks post-op. Since the surgery I've had a REALLY tight feeling just under my bust, around my ribs, like I'm wearing a bra that's about 3 sizes too small. I can also feel the implants against my ribs and if I move in certain ways they dig in and cause my ribs to feel bruised. When I try to lie flatter than propped up on 5 pillows, including a V pillow that tight feeling gets even TIGHTER.
Right now I feel as though my body will never feel normal again. My ribs are getting more painful and I'm now on antibiotics as last Tuesday and Wednesday I was running a temperature and the pain in my left ribs has definitely got worse since then.I HATE the way I feel now and can't help feleing that I should have just had the blateral mastectomies and been done with it.
Trudie. -
Has anyone ever opted to have the expanders remooved??
-
Trudie, I think we all have that feeling of a too tight bra with the expanders. I have heard it called the iron bra. Even when you are braless it feels like you have a bra on. I am 4 months out from bi-lat and expander placement and I still feel the "iron" bra. You kinda get use to it. I never had the digging into my ribs feeling but I did have the "feels like an elephant sitting on your chest" when I would try to get out of bed. I no longer have that feeling. I have heard that with the exchange the "iron bra" feeling will go away. I am waiting for a date for my exchange. Hopefully in September. Mine was not so bad that I wanted them out. Give it a little more time since you are only 5 weeks out. Each day will be better. Just try to hang in there.
Linda

Sharon-You need a break! Good luck with the tests & Surgery.
dhettish- Sorry that you can not be the same size as you were before. I would be sad about that too. I did get my Sept 22nd date finally Confirmed! Come on over to the Sept Reconstruction thread! (and any other Sept Reconstruction Gals) I hope your last fill pain has settled down.
Trudie-Im sorry you are in so much pain. There is a good chance the pain will lesson soon. I wanted to give up in the beginning too. I could not believe how painful it was. I would stick it out a little longer...I think I have heard of a couple of women having their expanders removed. I hope your fever is gone by now. If not- you should call your ps.
Pam
-
Hi Trudie,
I'm with you - I thought I was going to lose my mind with the expanders. After all the other stuff, I thought this was going to be a lot easier. Check out the note I wrote back in June when I was frantic. I was sure I was going to have them taken out, and then slowly, the pain lessened and I could sleep without being in horrible pain, and I got off the pain meds. It will get easier. Blah blah blah, right?!! But, really it does. There are days that I forget that I have them.
This website helped a lot, especially during my sleepless nights. It's comforting to know there are a lot of women out there dealing with the same pain and issues as me.
It gets better, hang in there!!! USE A LOT OF PILLOWS - BUILD THEM UP SO YOU HAVE SUPPORT UNDER YOUR ARMS!
Lilyj

Hello Ladies, Trudie I know exactly how you feel. I thought I was losing my mind with the expander. I was very unhappy and I felt like I was living in a bubble. I had wished I'd just left it blank (no expander). I was one who was never comfortable with the one expander that I had. I prayed a lot and asked God to help me keep my sanity. I cried a lot and just wanted to get in bed after work so I could sleep and not feel anything. My exchange was last week on Aug., 19th. I am still in the healing process. I personally would not tell anyone to have expanders placed because they made me feel so bad physically and mentaly and that is not a good feeling. I wished I had postponed my surgery so that I could have had the one where they take from your stomach and be done with it. On the day my surgery was scheduled my PS was unavailable to do the stomach thing because he was already scheduled to perform on another patient for the same day. I'm the last person to give advice on the tissue expander but I want you to know that I had all of those feelings. I had the exchange to my left side and lift of my right breast and right now I wish I had left the good side alone. This chatboard has helped me tremendously and I think we are all pretty brave and believe that we have the best person in the world behind and in front of us....GOD. I will continue to pray for you Trudie and everyother woman on this chatboard

Well, nuts...I had to have my Frankenboob implant removed today! It looked pretty bad--pink and, in one spot purplish and yellow--and to the ps it looked like infection. So... another trip to the hospital and a wait of 3 months until the tissue heals. And, omigosh, another #@#$! drain!!! Not too happy here, but perhaps if it is redone, it will better match the other implant (symmetry, you know) and it will stop resisting the tissue. Actually, even with the incision pain, I feel better than I did with the implant pressure--it really mimicked the expander. (And yes, Debbie, Sneakypie is a cat--both Rita Mae Brown and Sneakypie Brown are billed as authors of a mystery-book series!)
-
Oh sneakypie,
I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I hope you have the drain out soon and the infection under control. We'll be thinking about you.

Sneakypie, I just knew that was the inspiration for your name! Love that book series and the TV movies; hope they do more! (One pet shares a name with my son!)
Hoping all goes good, better, and best for you!

I have not been on for a while and have missed reading all of the posts. I am now 10 weeks out from my exchange surgery and aside from the miserable hot flashes, I feel wonderful. I had 550 cc high profile silicone implants and am about a c-cup now. My right side was my bc side and looks slightly different than the left. But all in all, it looks ok.
I know I may be off topic but this is my favorite thread. I am wondering if any of you have seen any rippling with a silicone implant. My bc side had 3 lumpectomies and of course the expander surgery and then the exchange surgery so I did not expect it to look as well as the other. When I stretch a certain way, I can see ripples. I know this is more common with saline implants but has anyone else had this happen with silicone?

Hi Ladies,
Sharon 67, So sorry to hear of all of your troubles. It just cannot go smoothly can it?
Trudie, Hang in there. The expanders are tough. I did think about having mine taken out and going for the DIEP, but I thought that I was that far into it and I just kept them, but some days and nights were pretty miserable. It does ease up after the expansion is done.
Sneakypie, Sorry to hear that you had an infection. Hope that it gets cleared up soon.
Janelle, Are the ripples that you see anywhere near the scar tissue from the lumpectomies? Wondering if the scar tissue is doing this. Just a thought.

Hello All
Can anyone tell me what the recovery is like for the exchange? Just curious - I know you'll give the details. Am planning to have it done next month.
Thanks,
Lilyj
-
Hey Lily! I can give you some idea about recovery. I had my exchange at the middle of June. It was SOOOOO much easier than the mastectomy. I did have drains but they were much much smaller and came out the next week. I did have some work to be done at exchange time as my orginal breasts were a DD and there was a lot of excess skin to be dealt with. I am about a C cup now. I originally wanted to be a B cup but I think it's closer to a C cup which is fine with me! I have cleavage still but nothing like the DD cup. I was in a bit of pain for a few weeks post exchange but now I just have occaisional pangs of pain so that is good! I do have itching though. It's really irritating sometimes. I want to just rip those suckers out sometimes due to the itching!!!! I am a bit numb still and I think at this point I will always be. I am still at odds about what to do with the nipples. I have pretty long scars on both sides so I was hoping to have a nipple to break that up a bit. In clothing I look really good though and I am having a blast being able to wear camisoles and cute tops without a bra!! That is the really big bonus of all of this. Good luck with your exchange!!
Anne

Thank you!!! I'm a little nervous about it, after everything else, I really want this to be easy. I was pretty small to begin with, and replacing with just a small B. I don't think my body could handle much more than that. I'm looking forward to losing the tight shell feeling from the expanders.
I had always worn a big padded bra to give me some volume, so this is exciting. I'll feeel good in tanks and halters, and since both breasts are gone, I'll be symmetrical with the implants. It's the small stuff that makes me happy. Let me know what you decide to do about nipples, for now, I'm not going to do it. But, you never know... I may change my mind. I'm just happy to have something there. Thank you so much for your encouragent!

Kerry,
I don't think it is scar tissue as the ripples seem to have a symmetrical circular pattern. But then again, I do not know for sure.

I have a couple questions about expansion and thought someone here might have some ideas ... First, I had immediate reconstruction and each side was filled to 250cc initially -- does that seem like a lot? Today I had my first expansion (3 weeks post-mast) and my PS did 70cc -- he put in about 40cc, then said he would keep going until I started to feel pressure. Of course I was lying down when he did it, and after I sat up there was way more pressure. Is 70cc more than average? He wants to do 80cc next time to get me up to an even 400, which is what my implants will be, so I can let him know if I'm happy with that size. Does anyone think I'm going too fast? I'm waiting two weeks between fills.
Also, he told me to make a fist with both hands, and place them on top of the opposite breast with my arms folded across my chest, and put gentle pressure on the tops of the expanders. He said that the muscle at the bottom of the expander is the hardest to stretch, but it needs to stretch to make the implants look ok. Was anyone else told this?
Thanks for the help!
Sheila -
Hi Everyone,
Haven't posted in a very long time. Lots of new ladies on the thread. I had my exchange last February and have been IN LOVE with my implants. I finally got my nipple reconstruction last week. I found it painful, the ps just used local anesthesia and due to nerve damage he had trouble numbing me in areas. So far they look fantastic! I too was looking forward to it breaking up the big scar across the middle but the dr said he could not place the nipple directly on the scar. (I didn't have the skin graft, so I am not sure how they do that!) But in about 6 weeks we will tattoo on the aerola. I think that will make the biggest difference. It will cover some of the scar which is what I can't wait for! Sharon I am so sorry you are still having trouble!! Yours went flat? How long after you had it done?? I still find I have to wear my sports bra to bed if I go too long without support. I just get achy in my chest, and sometimes get shooting pains. I too, have pain where they did the snb. My surgeon more or less told me it was in my head. Said there was no reason for it. LOL
Sheila, I hadn't heard that about pressing down on the expanders....I would have cried! Mine were so painful I could hardly stand it at times and to press on them? No way....but have heard others say that it helped relax the muscles, so my thought is that maybe there is something to it!
I was also at about 250 ccs after getting the expanders put in. I could only tolerate 50 cc's per week. I did 100 once and couldn't go back for 3 weeks. The muscle spasms were dreadful. Other ladies, could tolerate 100 just fine....so it will just depend on your tolerance. Don't do more than you can stand comfortably or it will make you afraid....at least it did me.
Everyone take care! Teri
