Carol,
Man what a big weekend, but I am so glad you brought up the whole idea of talking to someone professional. Zach has been through a lot this past year, and this may be his way of acting out, but he's also 16, so it's really hard to tell what's going on with him. What was his response to your putting the idea out there?
I think it's a great idea that you will be 'on top of Zach' so to speak. I truly believe that jr. and sr.high are the ages kids need their parents at home more than when they are in elementary. This is a huge transition time for kids.
Thanks for the pics. You took some that we didn't, so these will be a good addition to ours. The movie, Bottle Shock, was based on true events and was pretty darned good. It was about how the California wine industry beat out the French in a taste test in France in 1976 and then again in 2006. The French were not happy either time. It was shown in an old theater from the 50's, maybe as old as the 40's in Sacramento.
Hope you slept well. I'm thinking I need a good night's sleep as well tonight.
Good night Jewels,
SIS Kimberly

Happy Monday, Jewels! WOW - you gals were CHATTY over the weekend!! I thought I'd be safe not checking in, but was I wrong!! We had a very busy weekend - went to dinner Friday night, then drove around looking at houses. We were up early on Saturday working in the house - clearing the clutter and getting each room ready for pictures. We had to stop around 1:00 to head out for ds's football game - it was a scorcher!! And the result was much better than last week - we won 64-14!! Ds played VERY well - we were very proud. After grabbing dinner out and coming home, we then spent the rest of the evening working in the house again. Basically all we have left inside is some minor repairs/painting, which shouldn't be too bad.
My step-mom is a realtor and she came yesterday with my dad to talk to us about listing the house. They were here (with my "little" brothers - who are both over 6 ft tall, but a soph and jr in high school) for about four hours yesterday and, by the time they left, we had all the paperwork done and our house will officially be "on the market" by the end of this week! Kind of crazy!
So, what's been up with the Jewels? First, Sherry - I hope everything went beautifully for your daughter's wedding on Saturday! I thought of you several times throughout the day - can't wait to hear all about it and see pictures! I'm sure you're plenty exhausted after your busy weekend.
Welcome back to all of our traveling Jewels! Glad you all made it home safely and had such good times. Kathy - are your kids excited about school starting soon?
D1 - wow - you've been a busy gal!! I can't believe you walked to the store, then had to carry all your stuff home! Glad you made it okay. I hope your meeting with Joan was nice today - again, twinge of jealousy there!! BTW - stay retired if you can at all afford to do it!! Working is too exhausting!
Kimberly - I feel your pain being back at work now. My days are getting a little easier, but it was certainly difficult to get up this Monday morning after such a busy weekend! Hope everything goes well for you as you get back in the groove!
Paula - sounds like you're back at it too - and sounds like you're pretty booked!! Hope your start goes smoothly.
Carol - I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through with Zach. Sounds like he's just a typical teen who made a poor choice - I work with so many of them daily!! I hope things are going okay for you. Sounds like you've made some good choices with his schedule. Hang in there, dear - I remember a time that my brother and his friend pierced each other's ears with a potato and a needle and my parents hit the roof!! Things were tense for a while, but he eventually apologized and all was "well" again.
Love the pics - thanks for sharing! Yep - the foobies are doing fine - I'm still a little restricted with what I can do and it's kind of hard b/c I feel pretty good. The only thing that keeps me "being good" is that I went through my sister messing hers up twice and having to have two additional surgeries! Don't want to go there!!
Kris - I'm with ya on getting done what you can while you've met your insurance max! I'm thinking laser hair removal may be in my future!!
I'm definitely IN on the Jewels gathering - June's good for me - I don't care where!
Well, I'm off to help the ds clean out his "playroom" - he doesn't like that name anymore now that he's in junior high. Guess we need a new name for it. Be well, Jewels!!

Hi Ladies,
Sitting here tonight while the ds is in the "galley" doing the dishes, he was showing off his bussing skills of carrying numerous plates at once. YIKES !!! The saga continues, but as we all know, time does tend to heal. He walked to and from work today, as I was at work myself. I think he is slowly coming to the realization that life is not over. I brought up the idea of chatting with a counselor again, and he seems to think that its not necessary. I asked him point blank if he was unhappy about anything at our house or at his dad's. He said no, which I tend to believe.
The ex talked with Zach's dr today in regards to potential blood disease from his poor decision making. We we're told that Hep C is the most common problem, and that usually it would show signs by week two. It has been just over two weeks, and so far so good, hopefully he has dodged a bullet. A blood test in about 6 months would still be a good idea as well.
I was seen by my rad office today. It was a follow-up appt, and the nurse was in amazement as to how well I have healed. She was quite surprised, and I must say, I am completed elated with how fast the healing has happened.
On day three of my Femera, so far so good ! Tomorrow I will be going in for an infusion of Zometa. Its a quick infusion, all of about 20 minutes, and "should" not cause any nasty se's. If that is the case I will be getting an infusion once every 6 months for a 3 year period. With the common se of bone loss with Femera, the Zometa will help with that concern, as a osteoporosis drug, and there has also been more than one study done that concludes it has decreased reoccurence rates with "garden variety" bc.
At this point, I'm going with my doc's recommendations, with a second opinion agreeing, adding some Calcium w/Vit D supplement, and I will be trying very hard to work on my eating habits. I can thank Sis Kimberly for her insight/thoughts as to what we put into our bodies and I know with my visit to the store this weekend, I tried to spend much more time in the produce section, and avoided the processed middle sections of the store. I've also been reading an interesting book entitled "Breast Fitness", bottom line for the menopausal woman would be less fat in your body equals less estrogen floating around. For us ER+ gals, that's a biggy. At this point I have the focus to stay fit for the 3 Day, and my goal will be to hit the indoor gym at work when the weather turns ugly.
Julie, I can't believe that your home is going to be on the market so soon. Seems as if you just mentioned the thought of selling a week or two ago. Hope that the real estate market is moving in your neck of the woods.
Wow, your ds's game was a real blow out. Playing football in August always seems kinda strange, speaking of football I think our Sea"chickens" are playing tonight on Monday nite football.
And I'm with you, I will travel wherever to meet up with the Jewels. I'm so fortunate to have met Kimberly and I figure thats one down and many more to go!
D1 and Joan, hoping that you both had the chance to meet today. Waiting for the report!
Kimberly, so sounds as if the movie was good, and the theaters ambiance was cool as well. So a question for the vino officiano's what is the best way to keep an open bottle of red wine? In the fridge, on the counter? The "new" me is trying real hard to have a glass of wine at night, not two or three. Hence the need to keep the bottle for a couple of days.
Hope you had a better nights sleep, and that work went smoothly.
Already looking forward to a bit of a sleep in tomorrow, I have my infusion at 9:00 and then off to work after that. Then its off again on Wednesday, having a little procedure to remove a "mole" or what I would prefer to call a freckle off of my back. I spoke with the Derma doc today, asked if I could apply some Emla Cream to the area, she said we will be numbing it, which I knew, but why feel the needle at all was my thought. She okayed the use of Emla prior to that appt. YEAH,
Hubby just getting home, night all,
Carol

3 boosts down, 2 to go. 2 to go. I'm so glad this is almost over.
Skin is holding up very well. No extra nasties from the boosting with a bolus. Still just a wee bit pink with a bit of itching now and then.
Gotta smile at all the groaning about back to work. Some of us never stopped working.

-
Carol, I have the sideburn/chin blond hairs too, maybe the 'strays' under my eyes were a little lost and meant to hit the eyelashes.
Such as life. Keep on crusin LJ
-
OK gals, just a quick check in before I leave for my first day of school with the kiddos!
Carol- Store open bottles on the counter if it's cool enough otherwise you'll have to let your glass of red warm up before you can drink it. They make these devices that will suck the air out of your bottles but if you're going to drink the rest the next night, I would not worry about it.
Glad all is well on the Femera front and that your rad appt. went well.
Whew (wiping my brow) on Zack dodging a bullet on Hep C.
Jules - Wow the house on the market happened fast. I hope it sells quickly for you guys.
Yeah on the big win for the ds!!!!
Kris - WhooHoo, you'll be done by the time Memorial Day weekend festivities are upon us all.
OK GTG
SIS Kimberly
-
Kris, you crack me up ... lets hope with time these wild hairs mellow out! Wishful thinking ??? With such low estrogen levels, I guess I should feel fortunate that I'm not sporting a full fledge beard.
LJ, what great news that your rads is almost done and your just a "wee" bit pink. Sounds like you won't have to be slathered in Aquaphor and bandages to heal up. Yipeeee!
Off to apply my Emla cream to my port, and back to the chemo center (now that seems a bit weird), I'm certainly not dreading the appt like I did with chemo, I know that this infusion will help to keep my bones strong. Bring it on !!!
Have a good day Jewels, Carol

Back from taking ds to college and touring Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. I'm trying to play catch-up with the mail, laundry, and grocery shopping. Got in yesterday afternoon and had a cooking class last night, so am just starting on stuff today. Have another cooking class tonight, but the rest of the week is pretty clear. The community college started this week, as well, so I'm back in class mode.
Your can tell $4 a gallon gas prices are having people drive less. I can't ever remember being in a major national park and having it so empty. It was nice not having to fight crowds at the scenic overlooks or on the trails. We did a lot of hiking, so I don't have guilt about missing my normal training schedule. We really enjoyed ourselves and other than all the driving was pretty relaxing.
We stopped on the way back to have breakfast with ds and hear how things are going with him. Sounds like he's settling in nicely and making lots of friends. They have tons of activities for the first few weeks, so he's staying busy. His schedule is a little strange in that not all of his classes start this week. So, for the first three weeks he only has three classes. Then another one kicks in and another one at the eight week mark. It certainly lets him ease into the whole college thing.
Carol -- so sorry to hear about the problems with ds. Even with everything we have exerienced with oldest ds, we haven't had a tattoo or piercing issue. My mother told the kids years ago that she would disinherit them if they ever got a tattoo or piercing. A couple times he's asked me if I think she really means it and I've told him don't risk it. There's enough money on the line that I think it's one of the few impulsive things he hasn't done.
I'll do more shoutouts when I get a chance to catch up. Hope everyone has a good week.

Hi Jewels,
I was so tired from the wedding I'm just getting my strength back, I over done it and danced the night away. Plus I had this stomach bug for the entire weekend. dd wedding was beautiful and the reception was fab. I think I was just feeling the stress of the wedding at the rehearsal. We had about 50 or more poeple at the house for a rehearsal Bar B Q. So I got up Sat morning and mop the floors. Who does that on thier daughters wedding? I don't know it seemed like a good idea at the time. We had the photographer coming over so I mopped the floors. I was sure tired after the reception. It was a wonderful and magical night for dd and new son in law. The food was great and I had such a wonderful time.
Thanks for thinking about me Jewels, I have been thinking of everyone too.
Carol and Kimberly Love seeing all the photos of Lake Tahoe and Calf. Lake Tahoe is awesome.
D1 So college girl is off and running at college. I loved the part where you and your dh left before college girl changed her mind. Loved it!!! I wanted to let you know i'm not having as much leg pain I think if you are on it for a few months the leg pains start to fade. My hot flashes are not as bad now too. But I might start having more leg pains being on my feet all day, until I get used to it. I really hated Tamox but i'm getting used to it. I did not gain any more wieght and I'm slowly taking off wieght some wieght. I think my body is starting to balance out on it. I do feel for you having to get used to it all over again.
Take care Jewels, and I promise I will get caught up on the post again.
CathyCA I hope ds has a great college year!! You will have to show up some pictures of Yellow Stone.

Hi Jewels,
Just downloaded a few photos, the last one is me and my sister, everyone says we are twins, we are not. but we are called twins. My mom and brother and my sisters best friend.
The flowers on the cake are real it was a yummy yummy cake french vanilla and chocolate.
All these pictures were taken at the reception I did not take any at the church. After the wedding the bride and groom got in a really cool convertiable sports car and was sitting on top. I can't wait to get a picture of that. I hope you all enjoy the pictures.
like D1 says got 2 go. Sherry
D1 and Joan I hope you both get to hug each other.

Okay, my plan was just to read thru the posts, but I can't keep from commenting...
First of all, our college tours went great. I can see why Vassar is #1 and was surprised/pleased to learn that Wesleyan has surpassed Pomona as #2 (it's closer to home, so as the mom that was good news). It was a lot of driving this weekend, but it was all good. We walked around Swarthmore (outside Philly) on the way home, but dd decided it wasn't her cup of tea. Too bad, it's REALLY close to home. Oh well.
So I got to meet Joan. It was sublime. She was kind enough to suggest an easy to find place in Poughkeepsie and dh and dd dropped me off. Joan and Lucy (OMG, you guys that dog is SOOO cute), met me for a couple of drinks. We chatted pretty much non-stop. It was really nice to flush her story out a little more than we've been able to do on the thread. It gave me an even better connection with her. She was then such a champ that she gave me a lift to dh and dd. I have one photo on dd's camera and I know Joan has a couple (including a very good one with Lucy), that one of us will post soon. It really makes me want to meet other Jewels-the in person hugs are the best ever!!!!
So, on to my comments.
Kris-dark hairs? Oh man, those have got to go. Yep, and the hot flashes totally suck. (Good luck with the port removal. Let us know how it goes.)
Carol, great pix from your stay with SIS Kimberly. Joan mentioned that there were some new shots on the thread when I saw her, but I'm just getting back to my computer to see them tonight. You guys look great.
The housing plan for ds sounds good. It will help both your and his dad stay in touch with him while he does his "separation years." (They suck, but you'll all survive it.)
SIS Kimberly-did you get all the grape juice off your cuticles, yet? It's fun to follow your winemaking along. Keep posting about it. We tried our hand at brewing beer about 20 years ago and were pretty good at it, but when the girls came along we abandoned all of those pursuits that took so much time (that includes golfing...). Maybe we'll be able to pick them up again real soon.
College girl was so funny. She let us help with some things, but wanted to do others on her own. It all worked out and she's requested that we drive up this long weekend and take her to dinner (like we haven't driven enough this weekend. We figured out that since Saturday, when we took her back to school, we've put 1000 miles on the car. And how much does gas cost?????)
Dh didn't recognize Tom's name. How coinky dinky that he lives in Arlington! And yeah, you most def have me to visit when you come here, girlfriend!
So glad to hear the pancake is just tanned now, Carol. The body really is amazing, isn't it? Rads for tongue cancer would suck, I hope your friend's son does okay with it.
How did ds react to chatting with a professional? College girl has had her issues growing up and spent the better part of high school in therapy (some time I'll tell you all about that-they were some tough times. The good news is that she seems to be well-adjusted now and her future is very, very bright.) It will probably help him to get back in to the routine of school, even though the kids claim to hate the homework, I think they thrive on the routiness of it all. (Is routiness a word?)
Julie-Wow, the house selling is becoming a reality. I hope it goes well for you. (I really don't envy you though, moving is one of my top most hated activities). You're smart to take it easy with your new girls. I'm glad you're able to use your sister as an example of how not to behave. Sometimes we really can learn from others, huh?
Hip hooray to ds on the football outcome!!!
Carol-just reading that ds is thinking therapy is not needed now. Keep it in your bag of tricks. There's nothing wrong with giving it a try. Just remember that finding the right fit with a therapist can be tricky, so don't get discouraged.
Blood test in 6 months is a great idea. Best to be safe than sorry.
Oh, and I am not surprised to hear that you're healing quickly from rads. I'm totally convinced of the healing power of exercise.
Hey, Joan got the Zometa infusion, too. She said she was a little achey for a day or so afterward, but nothing to really complain about. And her attitude seemed to be if it helped her avoid bone loss, then it was a good thing. I hope she'll weigh in on this and let you know what happened to her.
Why do I let you crack me up so much LJ? And it's always when you say so little...
Glad the boosts are going okay. I've been thinking about you.
So SIS Kimberly had her first day with kids. How'd it go?
CathyCA-sounds like your driving trip was more restful than ours. It seems New Yorkers don't stop driving, no matter what (and driving poorly, I might add). Ooops. No offense to Joan. I meant the New Yorkers around NYC, not normal New Yorkers...
Glad your ds is adjusting to college okay. It can sometimes be a big change in a young person's life.
Good to hear the prelim report on the wedding, Sherry. I think you'll always remember that you mopped the floor on your dd's wedding day. (Sounds like a case of the jitters to me.) Smile at you dancing the night away. I hope you'll have some pix to share soon.
I ask for photos and, BAM, there they were. (I wish everything went that easily in my life...). They're great, Sherry. Thanks so much for sharing them. You looked awesome (‘course, I was hard-pressed to find someone in those pictures that didn't). I wish many, many years of happiness for your daughter and your new son-in-law.
Okay, that catches me up for now.
Thinking of you all.
Onward through the fog!

Good evening Jewels,
I'll bet you are all jealous of me because I got to meet D1 in person!! She is such a remarkable person. I feel so lucky! Here are some pictures. We had a really nice time. I hope D1's dd goes to Vassar so we can get together again!!
Sherry - the wedding pics are beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
Carol - hope the infusion went well. I had some se's but not as bad as the chemo's. They lasted a few days - mostly achy. Hope yours are minimal or none. My onc has me going only once a year. Lucky again I guess!

Me and D1 relaxing with drinks at an outdoor patio of Pizza UNO.

Me, D1, and Lucy - she really is SOOO cute!!!!!!!!
Joan
-
Joan and D!--I took a few days off from the posts and find out you guys met up in Poughkeepsie, which is an hour's drive from my house. I could have made that to meet you guys! Darn. So close yet so far. Small world. Glad you had a nice meeting. Lucy is so cute indeed.
I finished my radiation with no problems. My boob merely got pink where they did the boosts. I have a follow-up visit tomorrow. My biggest complaint is that my hair is growing so slowly on my head, but faster from the waist down. I still won't go out topless yet.
I'm leaving for FL Sept. 7-12 and will be praying for clear weather. I think Sept. is hurricane season down there. Just my luck.
My mom's aide is part time and seems to be working out, tho' mom can be unbearably sad sometimes.
Best wishes to all the Jewels,
Maz

Hi Jewels,
Just got home from work, my feet hurt and i'm having muscle spams in my back. I hope I will be able to work. I'm just a whiner I guess.
Joan Lucy is so cute and so are you and D1. That was really great that you got to meet. Maybe next time Maz can meet up too.
Carol I hope ds will be ok, and I hope your infusions went well and not to many SE'S.
Maz Have a wonderful time in Florida, i'm glad your mom's aide is working out nice.
i'm going to get caught up on the post tomorrow.
Take care, Sherry

Hello Jewels,
I went in this morning to have another body part whacked on (I swear it looked like a pretty normal freckle to me) but with my family history, I can't be too careful ... I called the Dermi Surgeon's office yesterday, and they said go ahead and put Emla cream on the area that was going to be operated on. Worked pretty darn good, I felt the lidocane shot somewhat, but just faintly. The doc shot me in three places, and I felt little to no discomfort at all. Heck she was stitching me up before I knew it. The incision is about 1.5 inches long (bigger than what I had thought), I guess when their doing a surgery like this they want to have margins to check as well. I did get to see the specimen they took from my back, I amazed myself that it didn't gross me out at all to see it. I should have results in about a week.
My dh took the morning off to take me in (I took a whole Lorazepam at 8:00) which for me was alot. I have always taken a half dose which typically has worked well. Figured I go for the big guns this morning. We we're back home by 10:30, the dh ended up going into work, the ds was picked up (hence has no wheels of his own now) by his grandma to do some yardwork for her on his day off (gotta like that), and here then I sat.
Yep, a bit tired from the drug, but within about an hour I decided to venture off shopping. I hate to waste a day off doing nothing! Needed to buy a baby gift for my friend, and thanks to my visit with Sis Kimberly, I came home and looked at my hodge-podge of office furniture that is on display in our bedroom and decided that I would like something a bit nicer to look at, and that would be more functional. Talk about a mismatched mess, some of Kent's stuff, some of mine, an ugly 4 drawer metal filing cabinet is just for starters. I've brought home some brochures with measurements and hopefully I can come up with something that will look decent yet doesn't break the bank. Actually the looking decent won't take much work, atleast to be better than what I've looked at for the past 9 years. I too have a roll top desk, it looks "kinda" cool, but the functionality of it sucks, and nothing else even comes close to matching the look. The ugly metal filing cabinet needs to hit the garage. I'm using one drawer, and the rest is a free-4-all. The new stuff I was looking at had some nice 2 drawer (matching wood) cabinets that would be sufficent for the everyday billing type stuff. Heck the rest of the crap could be trashed IMO.
Also started looking for a small wine cooler (blaming this one on Kimberly as well !!!) I'd like something to hold about 20 to 30 bottles, didn't have too much luck with that, I think I may need to look on-line. In the meantime Macy's had a nice little 8 bottle chiller on sale for $39.00 reg. $129.00. Grabbed that little one, plopped it on an end table in the dining room for now, and loaded it with 8 bottles from our visit south. Yes Sis Kimberly, the wine you so graciously gave to Kent and I has made the chiller !!! So actually I'm not blaming you, I'm appreciating what we've experienced/learned by Greg and yourself in the wine world.
So I've been waiting for the numbness to wear off from this mornings procedure, so far, I feel great. I've taken a couple ibu's, have now poured a bit of white wine and will be having a "nosh" (my fav new word) before throwing a flank steak on the bar'b. Looks like it will be the ds and I tonight for dinner, the dh will be working late, I'll be putting up a plate for him.
I had planned on taking tomorrow off, (thinking my back might be sore), since I was going to be home I scheduled carpet cleaners to come and do the whole house. Over the years I have had cleaners come in, usually I'd just do the main living area, this time I'm going for the whole sha-bang ... stairs too. My ds will be able to help in the morning to get as much furniture as possibly off of the carpet, we'll be leaving things like the tv's, stereo cabs, and beds, but hopefully most of the smaller stuff we can pile onto the hardwood.
Sherry, awesome pics from the big day, what a gorgeous looking wedding party, and may I say the mother of the bride was looking fabulous! Mopping floors ... hmmmmm now I would expect that from D1, but from the rest of us?
Joan and D1, great pics, thanks so much for sharing ... bummerville on not being able to hook up with Maz as well. So I want to know, was I the only one who got butterflies in my stomach with the thought of meeting up in person with a Jewel, whom it seemed so easy to yak on-line with? You both look great, full of life and spirit, and D1, that poor le arm looks tiny to me. I take it your sleeve is doing what its designed for. I'll be giving you a jingle tomorrow, hope I catch you home.
Maz, so glad to hear that your rad txt was pretty uneventful as far as se's go. Hoping your trip to Florida accomplishes what needs to be done, and the worry of foul weather is not part of the game plan.
Kimberly, I'm thinking it was the full meal deal today for you at school. I bet your wiped but hyped in a good sort of way. Although kids sometimes don't know how lucky they are, I have this gut instinct that the kids that pass through your door are pretty darn lucky to have you as a teacher. Hope things we're calm.
Well looks like its dinner alone tonight, the ds just got a call from the restaurant he works at, due to somebody calling in sick so he is heading in on his one day off this week. I am very happy that he said yes, and is willing to help out, I think I'll even let him drive my car to work this eve. He just jumped in the shower as he was knarly from doing yardwork at Grandma's. On top of that he took his paycheck today and put ALL but his insurance money he owes his dad for the month of September in the bank ... YEAH ... just maybe he is getting a clue that Mom and Dad aren't so bad after all and that he can change his ways towards a more positive life. He has been blowing every penny of every check on clothes, shoes, and hats, with a few bucks left over for the gas tank. I'm thinking at this rate, the need for new school clothes has been taken care of. I think that I'll wait until the school year gets underway and then see if maybe he might need something. I'm usually good for buying the boxers, footies and undershirts, I can't go wrong there most of the time!
Okay, my "small" glass of vino is dry, time to head to the galley, re-fill and fire the bar'b.
Can't say that I'm not looking forward to turning on the boob-tube, kicking back and enjoying the eve alone with the wieners !!!
Hope all is well with my fellow SIS friends, would really like to hear from a few MIA gals, please know that there is definitely not the need to respond to all the yakking going on, just let us know that maybe your still sneaking a peak at our post and that hopefully your doing well. Just a sentence or two would be great ... if not, I'd like to assume all is good, and life is getter better by the day!

Hi Jewels! Hope everyone is having a good week. Mine's been busy, busy, busy!! Still not used to all this grading again. My family keeps telling me I need to just quit giving so many assignments - too bad that doesn't work! Ds and I spent 3 hours Monday night cleaning out his playroom. Three 55 gallon trash bags later, we were close to done! Yikes, he had a lot of crap in that room!! Scary thing is he sold a bunch of stuff at our recent yard sale and still had that much junk! It's a good feeling to be done with that one corner of mess, though.
Our house is officially on the market - listed on my step-mom's website and on the realtor mls listing. She expects to start showing it as early as this weekend. It's also going to be in one of the local newspapers this weekend - we'll see how it goes!
Carol - glad you didn't experience too much pain today with your "freckle" removal. I have one on my side (stomach area) that I think I might have someone look at. Good deal that ds decided to go in and work to help out. I bet you were thrilled that he put his check in the bank! My child typically has any of his "earnings" spent before he earns it! I'll be glad when he starts saving --- he's actually in a 7th grade "Personal Finance" elective this quarter, so it'll be interesting to see what info he comes home with.
D1 and Joan - what beautiful Jewels you both are!! And Lucy just fits right in - adorable!! I'm so happy that you got together - too bad Maz didn't get in on the meeting - maybe next time!
Maz - glad to hear that your boosts were anti-climatic! I hope your trip to Florida goes well.
LJ - glad you're doing well too. Yah, I know - I'm one of the "whining" back-to-work gals. I have NO idea how you kept working and going through all you did with chemo, etc... There's just no way I could have done it. It's amazing how long it's taking to get back in the groove!
Cathy - glad you had a nice trip!!
Sherry - what BEAUTIFUL wedding pictures!! I'm so happy for you that everything went well. You're dd was a stunning bride - they look very happy.
Well, girls, I need to do some picking up around the house - my two "boys" are going to have to adjust their habits when they start showing the house!! I'm not sure when I'll be back on - we have Open House tomorrow night at school so I'll get home late. We have a busy weekend planned - going to dinner for dh's b-day Friday night, working on the house Saturday morning/afternoon, then ds has a 6 pm football game - Sunday we're hoping to go for one last boating outing, then I'm sure Monday will be laundry day! Hope all the Jewels have a great Labor Day weekend!

Rads is done, poof, a thing of the past. Everyone was so nice. The other patients in the waiting room applauded when they paged me to come to the Green Room "for your LAST treatment" ... hugs from the rad tech, the receptionist, other patients, the Rad Onc (he's a big sweetie) ... a little graduation certificate from the Green team ... and flowers from the dp. I am humbled by how kind and caring people can be. That may be the single most significant "takeaway" from this whole experience.
Sometimes we can be deceived by peoples' behavior ... think bad behavior is the norm. I was sitting at a red light last week, just waiting for the light to change, just as it does I hear a beep, look up in the mirror, and see some young guy flipping me off. I think my jaw dropped open. Wtf? I guess he had wanted to go right on red and I was in his way. Whatever dude. You're going to have a pretty rough time of it in life if you think the universe is there to accommodate you.
I'm going to just believe that people like him are background noise in the great journey. That the people who count are the ones who give you hugs when you finish rads, who put little cards on your desk just to say they're thinking of you and pulling for you, who mow your lawn without you even asking .... They're the ones who matter.
Julie -- good luck with the house sale ! Here's hoping for a great offer and a painless closing !
Sherry, thanks for sharing the pics. Glad it was a nice wedding and reception for you. The guys in their dark suits/shirts look like they're ready for a Sopranos wedding

Hey Jewels. Whew! A busy day today! I won't bore you with details, but I did manage to get some cookies baked to start school lunches next week and have a bag of them in the freezer to take to college girl this weekend. Shall I break my arm patting myself on the back for being such a good mom????
Joan, thanks a bunch for getting those pix posted so soon. Dd hasn't even unloaded the one I took from her camera, yet, so thank goodness there are others here who are more techno-oriented than I!
Okay, everyone, can you believe Joan's hair? She has a buttload and its thick and curly. I'm so jealous. I may pitch out my Tamoxifen tabs! Joan, it's time to ditch the head coverings and let that beautiful crown of jewels out (is that a pun around here?). Head off to your hairdresser to get a quick lesson on how to finger-comb it and wear it proudly. You see, I never knew you with "hair" before, so to me that head of locks is amazing. Just tell everyone you got a new back to school ‘do!
Maz, maz, maz. I'm so disappointed that I missed meeting you. I don't know what I was thinking, but for some reason I placed you somewhere in the middle of the US. If I had known you were so closeby, I'da tried to coordinate our meeting with you, too. So now you need to send dd good vibes for Vassar, too, and that way I'll be in that neck of the woods a couple of times a year at least. Have a great time in FL-don't let any bad weather chase you around. You're a survivor, girl!
Sherry, are you hitting the heating pad at night? I remember when dd took the retail job at the toy store a few years back. She came home all tired and achey every night-and she was 15! Give yourself a soak in the tub, or whatever it is that relaxes you. I'll bet you're the best cashier ever at Kmart!
Okay, Carol, it's kinda sad that we all know how to approach a surgery. But heck, I'm glad you were able to squeeze another use out of your Emla cream (so is that another pun, since it comes in a tube?). Take it easy on your stitches for a couple of days. You sound like you're itching to get back at it. Give it some time, please.
Sounds like ds is doing some penance. Good. He'll come around.
Ooooh. Another Jewel getting new office furniture. I'm jealous. I just told dh this morning that my fall project is going to be redoing the master bath. I'm going to see if we can afford a new shower stall setup with a better shower head, retile the shower stall and then have the room patched and painted. Should keep me busy for a while. Then in the spring I'm going to have the exterior trim painted and I'm setting the groundwork with dh to have the beds redefined and mulched in time for dd's graduation party. I'd even like to replace some of the shrubs that have died off, leaving gaps in our landscaping. I'm so excited to keep the house nice. It's our one investment that isn't tanking right now (even in a shitty housing market, properties this close to DC are always in demand). Oops, sorry Carol, I digressed from your new office furniture. Do you still like me?
And a new wine cooler? How California of you. You're becoming quite the aficionado, aren't you? I don't think my dh will want me to visit SIS Kimberly if I come home all wrapped about the care and feeding of wine!
Julie! I'm with the family-stop giving so much homework!

I don't envy you cleaning the "playroom." Those areas can get out of hand, can't they? Ours never had a chance to get out of control as our lower level has flooded 3 times in 14 years. I think we solved the problem last time (lots of caulk and a new French drain system), but every time we ended up pitching stuff, repainting and getting new carpeting. It's the best looking level in the entire house! Anyway, good luck for a quick sale at your asking price!
Congrats to LJ!!! So glad that, poof, the rads are all done! It's funny how quickly you can put that experience out of your mind, isn't it? I'm so happy that everyone took the time to acknowledge your last tx. I was always one of the first at my rad center to cheer folks on as they finished. And, yeah, I hear you on the realization that people are really caring. Living in large metro areas, I think we sometimes lose sight of the goodness that lies beneath. I'm really trying to take time to cultivate that goodness in myself and I hope this realization lasts.
And I must admit, I'm trying really hard not to flip other drivers off! I had a woman tailgate me on 270 last weekend and flash her lights and gesture madly, but I couldn't get out of her way as there were cars in front of me and in the next lane. Instead of engaging in an off-flipping war, I just smiled at her in my rearview and shrugged and then turned up the radio and sang along. Fuck road rage. Continue your great journey.
Oh, back to Carol for a minute. Thanks for the encouragement on my le arm. I need to report here that when I saw my legu on the 18th, she told me it was time to cut loose. My arm has gone down 3.5cm and my torso even more. Even though I still have that "full/stiff" feeling in my armpit, she couldn't justify more visits for my insurance. She has ordered the MLD machine for me (good thing my insurance will cover this as the damn thing costs $10,000!), which will keep me in massage for the rest of my life (apparently I respond well to MLD). I will see her monthly for a while and then only on an as-needed basis. I have mixed feelings about this, but it's nice not to need 2x weekly appointments. Now if I could only get my rotator cuff back on track. I have p/t scheduled through October for that!
Speaking of rotator cuff, how is your arm, LJ?
Okay, I need to get dinner on the road.
Onward through the fog, Jewels!

Ok Jewels, I'm not even going to fudge and say I've been lurking and have read all the posts since I last posted, 'cause I haven't. I've been soooooo tired at the end of my day, and today I'm off to Ashland for the long weekend with my gf, so I have about 15 minutes before she arrives.
School is like stepping onto a planet I vaguely recall. I haven't found my groove as of yet....not that the kids would notice, but I'm kinda anal at school with being totally prepared. Classes are packed! I have 37 in on class and 36 in the others. I'll write more about that later. I just wanted to log in and let you know I'm alive.
Loved the pics Sherry. Your necklace really added WOW. D1and Joan, how fun. Lucy is a doll.
Carol, got your card. Thanks.

TGIF Jewels Friends,
Back to work today (good thing as I overdid while staying home yesterday). Actually got home by 2:30, and layed down to a short nap, which is never heard of from me. My back is sore today, I know I should have layed low yesterday, but the yard was calling my name. Live and learn!
I'm not supposed to get this darn incision wet (if I can help it), so this morning I was taped up with duct tape and plastic. What a picture this was at 5:00am this morning, the dh trying to fix me up for my shower ... not a pretty site!
Tonight the dh and I are going to use a gift certificate we we're given last year as a wedding present to a local restaurant. I actually had forgot that it was tucked away in my wallet, looking forward to a dinner out. The bistro specializes in using fresh local produce, and I'm thinking something in the seafood world will tickle my tastebuds.
Tomorrow will be a morning of walking (about 10 miles) with my gf who is also doing the 3 Day, and then some R&R on their boat which will be moored at neighboring marina.
D1, as always enjoyed the yak today. I am in awe thinking about talking on the phone to a "stranger" of sorts, who is living clear across the country, wow has my life changed in so many positive ways. I really appreciated your candidness in regards to raising kids, and the tough times they can challenge us with. You know there never we're any prerequisites to this parenting thing!
Kimberly, so you've got the first few days of the school year under your belt, hopefully you'll get your "groove thing" back soon. I know that you'll have a great time in Ashland, I'll probably be hearing about the play with the belly dancers from my sil as well. I think they saw it a day or two ago. Enjoy and have a safe trip.
LJ, congrats on finishing up your rads, sure sounds like you breezed right through your txt. Gotta like a great staff as well.
Julie, looks like you have a full weekend planned. Good luck with the home sale ... hoping that you have some decent weather for your boating on Sunday. My dh a couple days ago totally caught me off guard saying that we should sell our boat. We certainly did not use it much this year (wow, wonder why ??? Miss Burn't Chest here!) He said that he didn't expect us to use it much next year either. The kids are getting older, working yada yada, I think that we have a similar conversation each year.
Off to freshen up before heading to dinner, hope you all have a great labor day weekend.

Hi Jewels,
D1 - you inspired me with your kind comments about my hair. Well, I put some styling gel in it and blow dried it so it has some style. I am going without the hat/wig from now on! I went to the nursing home and as I knew it, my mother said my hair was too short. She never liked short hair. Maybe thats why I've been so reluctant! But I have gotten some nice comments and will go back to school with my new do!
I brought Lucy with me today and we met up with a therapy dog. They got along great and the handler thought Lucy was an excellent candidate to be therapy dog when she is older.
My appt on Wed. with the rads dr. went well. He said I was doing excellent.
Kimberly - I hope school gets better. I've been in my classroom 2x to set up. I'm trying to get into the groove. We start next week.
Carol- Hope you enjoy the restaurant.
Everyone - Have a great Labor weekend! (even though its the end of freedom for me)

Oh my, what a bad friend I am. I've got a lot of reading to do to catch up, at least the last couple of weeks. I kind of went to the dark place again. Found out I had to have knee surgery. Really tore up the meniscas in my knee. Not a happy camper. Then I got bronchitis. Tried to ignore it the 1st week. Went to doc the 2nd. Went back the 3rd 'cause the 1st antibio. didn't work. Came home from work each day tired from the bronchitis & hurting in the knee. Got over it just in time for the knee. That was last Thurs. It's not too bad, not like I was afraid it would be but all he could do was "buy me some more time". Knee replacement is not far down the road. And he's sure the other is just as bad. I agree, after using it (right) & babying the other (left) these last couple of months the right is screaming these days.
I really have missed you guys & have wondered how you were doing. I am going to do some reading. Not sure how much longer I can sit at my 'puter. It would be a great setup for a right knee, not so good for the left
I love you all, I miss you all & I'll be back soon.

Well, the first week of school is over. I've had a good week. My classes are full- we have block scheduling, so 2 classes of 30+ and another smaller block of 17 for my elective class of medical terminology. I have a game plan established with the sub that is going to be win-win for both of us. She's an English major, so she'll be working with the kids on their college essays and portfolios. Frees me up to teach healthcare AND gets me out of lots of essay proofing- gotta like that plan!
So, happy Labor Day holiday to all the Jewels. Hope the weather is nice for those who have the weekend off and have plans!
Carol- Ouchy on the mole removal! Take it easy on the gardening. You'll have to substitute "chill and sip the vino" for "relax and smell the roses"!
Sorry to hear about the tattoo business. ((HUGS)) to you and Zach. Our teenagers' bodies mature faster than their brains. They'll be in their early 20s before the brain has completed "wiring" itself in the area responsible for making good decisions and controlling impulses. I'm glad Zach's health screen was okay and keeping fingers crossed for the 6 month follow-up.
Sherry- thanks for sharing the wedding pictures. Like Kimberly, I loved your necklace- great accessory! You were a lovely mother of the bride. I'm so happy everything went well. LOL at the image of you mopping the floor on the morning of the wedding.
Joan- You have a great head of hair! I think you'll be getting a lot more compliments on your new look! Enjoy your last days of liberty before the school year begins. Hope you have a smooth first week of school!
Julie- wow! Things are moving fast with the house. Don't envy you all the cleaning and keeping things picked up for the house to be shown. Good luck!
Kimberly- looks like school hasn't slowed you down any- off on another getaway, I see! Hope you have a wonderful time in Ashland.
Kris- thinking of you today- how did the port removal go? WTG dropping 10 lb. since chemo. I'm with you on the facial hair- double AARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!
LJ- yes! Another Jewel finished with rads. Congrats.
I was moved by your post:
"I'm going to just believe that people like him are background noise in the great journey. That the people who count are the ones who give you hugs when you finish rads, who put little cards on your desk just to say they're thinking of you and pulling for you, who mow your lawn without you even asking .... They're the ones who matter."
BEAUTIFUL!

Jenn- oh my! Take care of yourself and those knees. Hope you heal well from your surgery. May the dark places be far from your world, my friend.
Off to enjoy the weekend. Take care Gems,
Paula

Another Saturday night and I ain't got nobody. I got no money cuz I just got paid. Oh, okay, so that's not original. Happy Saturday!
SIS Kimberly-no fudging, no worries. However, 36 students in a class is a worry! Aren't the parents all in an uproar? Not to mention the teachers... Geez. Hope the gals weekend in Ashland is going just great. You need to get your batteries charged before the school year really gets underway.
I enjoyed the call bunches and bunches, Carol. Fortunately, there were no prerequisites for parenting or I'd have no kids at all! But we all do the best we can and hey, we turned out okay so I always figured, how badly could I do??? Anyway, we luckily get our own chance to screw our kids up and some of us take that challenge seriously! (Fortunately, my kids are turning out okay despite my best effort...)
Hope the walking is okay with the back in recovery. Don't forget, you do need to pamper yourself a little bit for a week or so. And I'm always happy to learn of a new use for duct tape. I have a buttload of it in my basement for the next time we're attacked by terrorists (like duct tape is going to do any good...).
Joan, I'm happy to hear about your hatless state. Your hair is beautiful. Please don't take your mom's criticism seriously. We all had different hair before chemo and we need to embrace the opportunity to try this new hair for a while. If we don't like it, well, hair grows (unless you're taking Tamoxifen, damn drug). Your mom will adjust and with time you'll settle on a ‘do. Who knows, some of us may stick to the short hair! (If my family didn't keep telling me that I look like my mom, I'd most def keep this short hair.)
Jenn, I'm so sorry about your knees and bronchitis. Seems like you can't get a break. We miss you. Please try not to go to the dark place. Come and complain to us instead. Read up, laugh, and rejoin us.
Hey Paula, good to hear from you! Glad the first week went well. Luckily you get a short week next week to ease you into the routine. I have to say, isn't "relax and smell the roses" the same thing as "chill and sip the vino?"

Hope the dh is doing okay.
Well, the family is about to belly up to a movie, so I'm going to join them. Something on demand, so there is much discussion over what to watch. I figure if I stall here long enough, they'll decide and then it will be okay if I disappear off to bed an hour in to it as it will be one I did not choose. How's that for master manipulation??
We're off to visit college girl tomorrow to take her to dinner. It seems she thinks the next several weeks will be taken up with "rushing," so we have to visit her now. Since I was not in to the Greek thing when I was in college, this is all new to me. I'll be interested to see if it lasts with her.
Anyhoo, hope to stop in on Monday. Happy Labor Day!
