Canadian Pharmacy?

Hi!  I have mets to my bones and am on Arimidex.  I am also on Medicare and have just fallen into the "doughnut hole" or "gap" where I have to pay FULL price for this drug.  (I am in a Medicare Advantage Plan with partial drug benefits.)  The cost of this AI is prohibitive in the U.S., but much more reasonable through Canadian pharmacies.  There are several online.

I'd like to ask:  Have any of you ladies used an online Canadian drug supplier that you are happy with?  (I prefer the brand name to a generic AI at this point.)  Can you recommend any specific suppliers?  Thanks so much!   KC

I used the following toll free # from Oregon for my Arimidex from Canada. I am on Medicare also.

    Oregon # 888-818-2706

My local pharmacy was $ $688 for 30 pills, the local Costco was $245.00; and this Canadian pharmacy was 3 mo for 539.12 plus $13 shipping

Thanks so much, Laura!  Can you please tell me the name of the Canadian pharmacy?  I have been looking at several on the internet and hoped to find someone who could help me choose from among them.  I am concerned that the Arimidex be the brand name and not some generic substitution.  (This is what our Walgreens has been accused of...substituting generics for brand name drugs then billing Medicare for the brand names.)

Anyway...is that number some connection IN Oregon, or does it connect you directly to the pharmacy?  Thanks again (and, btw, you are a very pretty lady!)

I used to use Heartland in Canada before the US passed a law that we can't use those pharmacies. I was very happy with them. I think the US government has the right to confiscate medicine that is ordered from Canada and Mexico but I'm not sure because we got prescription coverage at work and I don't have to use the Canadian pharmacy anymore. I think you can find it online.

Well, it doesn't appear that one is listed on line anymore. It was in Manitoba Canada and I found another one in that same place. I think you just have to make sure that they are a reputable pharmacy in Canada so you will get legitimate drugs.

AARP has good tips and information about Canadian pharmacies at

    http://www.aarp.org/health/conditions/articles/rxcanada.html

The info for the pharmacy I found online in Manitoba is below.

    http://www.canadadrugs.com/

    Toll-Free Phone: 1-800-CAN-DRUG (1-800-226-3784)

    • TTY Toll-Free Phone for hearing impared service: 1-877-258-7006
    • International Phone: 1-204-949-1394 (long distance charges apply)

If you need to speak to a pharmacist, call our phone line and select "Prompt #4" on your touch tone phone to be connected to a pharmacist.

To fax in your Patient Order Form you may use either of the following fax numbers:

    • Toll-Free Fax: 1-800-988-5440
    • International Fax: 1-204-224-2736 (long distance charges apply)

To email in your Patient Order Form you may use the following email address:

    Hours of Operation
Monday to Friday - 7:00 am to 8:00 pm (Central Standard Time)
Saturday - 8 am to 6 pm (Central Standard Time)
Sunday - 8 am to 4 pm (Central Standard Time)

Hi - I'm back! I really am sorry, but I don't know the name of the pharmacy! I've filed it away somewhere safe and can't find it. I think the pharmacy had a toll free # for Oregon, but they aren't in Oregon. Also, I don't think there is a generic Arimidex as yet - so you should be ok there. Did you try to call the # and see what they said. Also, I think texasmom's idea about using the pharmacies recommended by AARP has to be a safe choice, also. Thanks, and good luck! I'll keep looking for the name of the pharmacy and will get back to you when I find it.....

Thanks, Laura, but you don't have to look.  I found them online using that 800 number.  I was reluctant to use them, though, because they are a "middleman" operation and want access to your doctor and records directly.  (Made me wonder why and if they might sell my info.)

Also, thanks to you, texasmom.  I just started to look at AARP's website the other day.  I will certainly check out the info you supplied.

I also am not sure about the legal situation at present.  I know that the govt was stopping all drug shipments from Canada for a time, but then they stopped doing that.  (I think it is very hypocritical, considering all this talk about "free trade with our neighbors", don't you? Isn't that why they want to erase our borders?)

The online Canadian pharmacies all do post a warning that the U.S. govt considers these purchases to be a violation and the FDA has all kinds of dire warnings on its site about safety and counterfeiting.  However, the FDA no longer enjoys a good reputation itself, (just check oline about how they promised us a safe sunscreen investigation...30 years ago!...yet are still blocking our use of safe ones used in Europe for decades!) and the governor of Illinois did some research into Canadian drugs/suppliers.  The resultant report said that Canada actually has more strigent laws controlling its drug supplies than our country does!  It also states that there is more counterfeiting of drugs within the U.S. than in Canada. (See the report linked to the governor's website online.)

I have emailed one supplier in Canada, who mentioned to me that the Arimidex they supply comes from Turkey!  However, they still called it a "brand name" drug, so I asked them if Astra-Zeneca was making it in Turkey.  They said that they are the mfr.  So...I just emailed Astra-Zeneca to confirm this info and, if it is true, to ask them how they assure safety of a drug made in Turkey.  What a world, huh?  Surprised

Thanks again, ladies, for your kind help!

KC - Your note reminded me that when I last ordered they gave me a choice of a drug from Canada or a cheaper one from India. I didn't have any info on the drug made in India, so I ordered from Canada. It will be interesting to see what Astra-Zeneca says about their different countries of origin...
