Rock, the article is great and I agree you and your daughter are doing a great project. It should motivate all of us to look for shelters or other projects in our areas and try to do more to help them out.

The shelter that our church helps out is the battered women's shelter. A couple of years ago we got the message that they had run out of funds in November for their phone for the hot-line for the remainder of the year and that evening at mid-week bible study, enough money was collected to keep the phone on for 3 months. Every month we take paper products to them that people donate and when we have community yard sales we allow them to come in and get clothing and household items to help the women get back on their feet. We also make sure that the local dissadvantaged school has the school supplies that it needs twice a year.

Just wondering how your daughter's project is going?  I hope it is spectacularly successful!

Analemma, I'm a bit confused. On this thread you wrote:

I don't know if this might work.  Our church does a lot of charity stuff and once a month we have a "focus" collection where everything in the collection plate goes toward an altruistic project.  Maybe you could ask if anything like that is available?

There are many non-believers.  We don't count on a miracle from God to save us, and our cure rate is exactly the same as those who do.

What kind of church of non-believers do you attend? Just curious.

21 backpacks so far ... 9 more to go!  The kids have been bringing in their old ones.

Today, I picked up the gift cards from WalMart, Walgreens and Ralph's.  Teryn read what she wanted to say to the managers.  She wrote it all out because she was nervous. It was so cute.  Then we shopped!  Two other places had us drop off the letters and wanted to meet her.  The Office Depot manager thanked me for bringing her in to do this, he's rounding up products for us. Said we can get 50 backpacks in June for next school year!  At WalMart we were able to get a lot of bath supplies, tampons, deodorant, hairspray and razors ... some of the kids are teens.

I didn't think about it but Sams Club is alot better place to get razors and hand soaps, etc.  they sell bulk packages and it is a whole lot cheaper than buying them individually.  Walmart gift cards are good for Sam's Club also.  Just a thought.
