herceptin only--do I still need my port?

    Hi all--

I just finished my 12 weeks of taxol/herceptin, and am now embarking on the herceptin-only part of my treatment, til December.

I had a port-a-cath put in before starting taxol, and it was great. The other night, though, after my first yoga class, I could feel more of the catheter tube under my skin than I could before--the radiology guy checked it, and he thinks I probably popped one of the sutures that attached it to the tissue...

Anyway, suddenly, I'm sick of the thing. I'm thinking of the time I spend with my kids at the beach in the summer...there's no bathing suit that will cover the thing...plus, now I'm going to be paranoid whenever I do the yoga...

It's no big deal, but I'm wondering if you all kept your ports in, and if not, if you've had any trouble with your veins from the herceptin alone? I have nice fat juicy veins, so I don't want to mess them up.

    thanks--

    Amy.

My prt had to be remowed due to infection midway through chemo. So my poor veins were toast by the end. I didn't want another port cause hated having complications with the first one.

Although I am difficult to get an IV on, the onc nurses are excellent and managed to get it every time for the hercetin which I finished a year ago Dec.. I did not find the Herceptin hard  on my veins. It was the AC that destroyed them.

Good luck with the rest of your treatments. Who cares who sees the damn port at the beach....think of it a s war wound.

    Hi Amy,

I personally had my port removed when I had my surgery May 1, 07, I had done chemo first. I just finished Feb 13, 08 my Herceptin year and have had no problems with my veins. As a matter of fact, they ran it thru the vein on the back of my right hand and all is well.

I would ask Onc if you can go ahead and have it removed. I pray to God above that WE ALL never need one again! Wink

Let us know what you decide. Take care.

    Susan

    Hey Amy:
I asked this of my nurses once I'd finished chemo and was continuning herceptin.  They said that lots of women do herceptin without a port and it's not a problem.

what i would consider is that herceptin is a long treatment.  i had a mediport implanted in my chest for all of chemo... i loved it.  it was under the skin so didn't have to worry about infections.  i'm not too familiar with the type of port you have, but i'd say if there are any issues with sticks, ask about the mediport in your chest.   the procedure for inserting it was about 20 min under conscious sedation and went really smooth.  I loved having my port for the entire duration of my treatment- herceptin included

Thanks, everybody. I'm having surgery on 4/11...2nd stage diep, so not a big one...I was thinking of haning it taken out then...

So annaanne--did you have yours taken out?

Littleflower, you're right...it would come out to about 12 treatments with no port. I think mine is the same as yours...it's in my chest, below my collar bone.

I am a little worried about all the chest "opening" exercises they do in my yoga class...I'd hate to actually pop the thing out by mistake!!

I'll let you know what I decide.

    Amy,

I too had a port in my chest just below the collar bone.  I did A/C and 12 Taxol/herceptin have 5 herceptin to go. I didn't really mind  the port because they have problems with my veins.  Last week I called my onc because I was having pain in my chest and it felt like water was moving around my chest.  My onc. told me to go to the ER I knew I wasn't having a heart attack so I called my surgeon she had me come in and they checked my port and it was leaking-I too had been doing yoga.  They took the port out.  My onc said we would try the last 5 without the port.  It is funny the port has been out a week and I feel like a new person.  The port was an all the time reminder I had cancer and was being treated for it.  Now I don't have the visual reminder each day.  Good luck to you.

    Hi A:
I have to confess, I didn't have it out right away.  My onc was really against getting it out and I got intimidated.  The week after I finished herceptin, I did get it out and I was so happy.  I think my onc would have preferred that I kept it in for another year, but like Debi, i hated it as a constant reminder that I had cancer.

As you can see, lots of women like having them. Not me, but I have good, easy veins.  Different docs and offices have different attitudes.  Some insist on ports for all IV drugs, and others are willing to leave it up to the patient.  (I also have a friend who left her port in after treatment and had a piece of tubing  break  off and go to her heart -- AGHH)

I had my port out after becoming septic my first go round with the beast.

I am now on Herceptin, IV with no problems.  I have been told by onc it does not injure your veins.

I also could feel and see my port the whole time I had it.  In thinner women they are harder to hide.  I also now will say it is a war wound.  I hated mine.

Good Luck and my best to all,

    Di

I have Herceptin every 3 weeks and have for the last three years... I had nodes removed from under my left arm so I have been told no iv  etc,. in that arm so that only leaves me my right arm... my oncologist told me that long term use of Herceptin can cause wear and tear on your veins and recommended keeping my port.  Especially since I only have one arm that can be used.

I had a lumpectomy and had 19 nodes removed. I'm not able to have iv's in that arm. I'm going to have a port. I'll start my chemo/herceptin soon. I'll be taking the herceptin for a year. Just saw my onc for first time today, sooo this is a lot to absorb. Deedee

I loved having my port even for the herceptin.  It made treatment SO much easier on ME.  I kept my port until I was taken off herceptin for low LVEF and until it was clear that I couldn't go back on the Herceptin.  Then I asked about getting my port removed and a week later it was DONE.

I have hard-to-stick veins and that port was my best buddy through chemo and treatment!

I had a PICC line and had it removed after my last chemo tx. I did the 12 remaining Herceptin txs without it, and my veins were fine. At my last Herceptin tx, my nurse told me they've just approved Herceptin to be given in 1/2 hour instead of 90 minutes. Oh well, missed out on that, but so happy be done with it--finished on 8/15/08.

I had my port removed 3 months after it was put in - it never was right and they only used it twice. My first onc told me I HAD to get it because the Navelbine would burn my veins. Soon after the first infection they started using the veins in my one good arm and I never had a problem because the infusion nurses knew to dilute the Navelbine with saline. After the second infection I had the port removed and felt soooo much better! It wasn't just the port under my skin - it was the tubing going up to my neck that bothered me. I've finished with the Navelbine and continue getting Herceptin through my veins with no problem - I'll be done with Herceptin next April. I do have very easy to find/access veins, even though they can only use my one arm.

I feel angry and resentful that my first onc (whom I fired for other reasons) insisted that I get the port in the beginning - now I have an ugly 3 inch scar in my chest - I have enough scars from my free-tram surgery. I cried so much when I had to get that stupid port........it was another blow that cancer hit me with that I didn't expect. I hope and pray I never have to get another one!

    HI all:

I was told one good reason for a port is that EACH time a vein is accessed - even for routine blood work - a scar forms.  Eventually there will be only scar tissue and access will be harder and harder.  Keep in mind that I am not a medical pro, just what I was told.

My port IS a constant reminder, but so is being bald, flat finger nails, and no eyebrows. I just chalk it up to what I need to do to beat this beast.    No one else can see the port, but they CAN see my  bald head, etc.   Battle scars is a good way to describe it.   Each of us will do our own thing and I think IF we get all the information and make a decision based on good input from our doctors, we are doing the best we can.   Good Luck to all.      Nancy

If you are planning to get your Herceptin weekly, you might consider keeping it.  If you are getting it every 3 weeks, you can probably go without it so long as your veins are ok.

I did 4 AC and 4 Taxol, dose dense, and then a year of Herceptin with no port at all.  I just refused to get one.  Wasn't having another surgical procedure -- no way, no how.  Onc went along with it.  The AC killed my veins and it became difficult to hit a vein, but I managed to do it.  As another poster said, the onc nurses are the BEST!  I say if you don't want it, have it out.

    Hi all,

I had my port put in before I started chemo--I had A/C for 4 treatments and then went on Taxol/Herceoptin for 12 treatments and had blood tests every week...Plan on keeping it in for the year of Herceptin...It's so much easier and having your veins pricked every week...and now they have a hard time finding my good veins.   Have had no trouble with the port, sometimes I forget its there.

    Have a good day

I had my port out after chemo, before herceptin.  I wanted to show off my new breasts.  Dumb move sort of.

My veins definitely weren't making it through 52 weekly sticks.  So I switched to the three week plan, which I recommend for anyone who wants to get back to life after chemo!!!

Anyway, towards the end, my veins had about enough of being stuck, and for the last 5 tx's I had to use the other arm. Yes, the arm you are not supposed to use.

Thankfully, I have had no issues or concerns with LE.

I finished herceptin in 2006, and I can honestly say that all the veins in my left arm function perfectly-- it's easy to get sticks and blood draws-- I have none of the issues that I had years ago.

    Hi Everybody,

I have only posted a few times but I have been coming here since I was diagnoised with bc on 3/17/2008. The information that is given on this sight is so helpful and honest that it has calmed my nerves several times. Each and everyone of you are awesome!! I love my purple power port. I also have had no problem and tend to forget that it is there until I look in the mirror! I am having it removed as soon as I complete my last herceptin treatment because I don't love it enough to keep it!!
